Disappointing to say the least... I went to the crown with family to celebrate a Birthday. For mains I ordered "lobster Mac n cheese" ( no lobster found by the way) the dish was watery, and after a couple of mouthfuls, I knew I had eaten something off and went to the bathroom to throw up as it instantly came back up. I explained to our waitress, who was lovely....however, I can't same the same for your manager, Jade. Not only did she not offer me anything else, but also reluctant to remove the item from the bill. Our waitress had to convince her to discount the dish to 50% off, although I had hardly touched it.The manager further approached the table, and continued to insinuate it was my problem and not hers! Coming from an extensive hospitality background myself, the customer care and service here needs to be addressed. You gave the impression that you do not care about your guests and pocketing money was her main concern. Paying for the dish was not the issue, the poor response and rude management is.

Such a wonderful lunch here today. Food was incredible, staff were so lovely and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We travel 2 hours to meet family and it was well worth the journey. Thank you !

I recently had a large family and friends gathering here and I cannot recommend the place, the staff, and the food highly enough- the steaks were just perfect, and the staff were brilliant, helpful, V cheerful and tolerant of our fairly large group! :) - it really made my day, and everyone else's, - what a great team and location.

This was a belated New Year's day meal. Had a carvery and the carver cut the meat beautifully thin and was very generous with the portions. Sunday lunch is 12-4pm.

The Crown is a fantastic little spot, with multiple outdoor sections and a lovely warm interior. Friendly staff (though service is pretty slow in the small bar area) and a delightful choice of drinking options. A very comfortable place to relax and drink, and would definitely go again

We went there for Sunday lunch and I had some of the carvery. I didn't have the meat as there was a blue bottle on it. The large pan of what turned out to be Yorkshire pudding ( Yorkshire people would be horrified) looked like a huge pile of mud pats. I have never seen anything look so disgusting. I had a few veg and non crispy ' roast' potatoes . The atmosphere was like being in a large canteen . A very pretty pub but I would never go there again.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Crown pub in Reading, and I must say, it was a truly wonderful experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped by a warm and positive atmosphere that instantly put me at ease. One of the most captivating aspects of The Crown is its rich history and stunning 16th-century architecture. The carefully preserved beams, classic design elements, and rustic charm transport you back in time, creating an enchanting ambiance that is simply delightful. It's evident that the pub takes great pride in maintaining its historical significance, which adds an extra layer of charm to the entire experience. The Crown boasts an extensive beer garden that is an absolute gem. Stepping outside, I was greeted by a picturesque setting with lush greenery, beautiful flowers, and ample seating. The beer garden provides a serene and tranquil escape, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing drink or savor a delicious meal while basking in the sunshine. It truly is a hidden oasis just outside of Reading city centre. The service at The Crown is nothing short of exceptional. The staff members are attentive, friendly, and always eager to ensure your visit is nothing less than perfect. They go above and beyond to cater to your needs, making you feel like a valued guest. Whether you need recommendations on the extensive selection of beverages or have any questions about the menu, the attentive service is always delivered with a smile. In conclusion, The Crown pub in Reading is a true gem. The positive atmosphere, complemented by the mesmerizing 16th-century architecture, creates a memorable experience that is both inviting and captivating. The extensive beer garden offers a tranquil retreat, and the amazing service provided by the attentive staff truly sets it apart. I highly recommend paying a visit to The Crown for an unforgettable and delightful experience.

Dropped in last minute after paddle boarding at Caversham lakes - warm pub with great food and lovely atmosphere. Ticked all boxes after our rainy time out on the water!

We had a Boxing Day meal here with family. The whole team did a great job! Food was all good and brought out at a good time. Everyone was happy.

The carvery food was well cooked, generous and delicious. We had to get up to look for staff to get information and attention. The upholstered chairs were so filthy , marked and worn we insisted they were removed and changed for cleaner chairs. The ladie's floor (and basin surround) was so wet it was dangerously slippy.

What a fantastic find in Playhatch! The outside area is beautiful and relaxing to sit in. The garden is well thought out into little sections so it feels cosy and intimate. The indoor area has lots of tables and is rustic but with a clean modern twist. The food was glorious. I can highly recommend the bobotie (South African beef mince dish) and the pistachio ice cream is divine!!!! There are also rooms available to book if you want somewhere to rest your head for the night. Plenty of parking available.

We come to this restaurant, both regularly and on special occasions because the food is always great and the service exceptional. Today was no different. We were served by Anthony who didn’t disappoint, his politeness and willing ness to cater for us was world class! He even had an off the menu bacon sandwich made for my daughter as that’s ‘ what she wanted!’. If you want a great British country pub with village atmosphere, great food and exceptional service this is it. Thanks. See you soon!

Really enjoyed our visit for dinner. The Saffron Arancini were really good - nice and crispy with a nice heat from the Nduja and the lovely puree. My fish and chips was good too. The service was also very good - we'll definitely return.

Probably Playhatch’s best pub! The atmosphere has been great every time I’ve visited the pub and food has been on point. You definitely need to book a table especially at weekends as it tends to get booked up. Enjoy!

Seemed friendly enough if a little disorganised when we visited but then cancelled our booking for a funeral tea days before the event and after the details had been sent out (apparently due to a double booking, but who doesn't have an online system these days?). To add insult to injury they then called us a couple of days later to confirm what we wanted to order. Stick with the Shoulder of Mutton down the road, much friendlier and a very personal service.

Beautiful place to eat. Ted remains the top manager in the area. Lovely menu - friendly, helpful, polite staff. Spotlessly clean. Couldn't be better.

Wow. Made to feel so welcome by Razzi and the team. We were taken care of from the moment we checked in. Absolutely fantastic food. The ribs were the best I’ve had. Our room was lovely and spacious enough with a luxurious bathroom. Would absolutely stay and eat here again. Xx

Just had 50th bash here, & was super impressed with the staff, venue & food. We were greeted warmly, the rooms were lovely. The gentleman incharge of food service was brilliant, friendly, attentive, efficient & the patience of a saint!! It was a very busy evening & everything ran super smooth for us, so massive thanks to him & the incredible team you have there. The food was fabulous - steaks were all incredible & amazing flavour. Cannot recommend highly enough. Had a fantastic weekend. Oh & breakfast was cracking too!! ;)

We have used the Crown for many years, and I would say its back to where it was back in the 90's. I've used the Crown for many years. The food is a good standard, the prices are reflective of the quality. Can be busy (which is good) at certain times of the day. I would highly recommend and use for business and family. No I don't get discounts, nor related of a friend. Just a good place that's family friendly.

Stayed overnight as were at a beard competition in the brewery nearby. The room was a very good size as was the toilet/shower room. We had a pizza and mac and cheese to end the night and breakfast in the morning. Both were very good. We would stay here again

Excellent staff , friendly and attentive . Please Please bring back the chicken and mango salad It was the best salad for miles around my friends and family loved it , especially in the summer months to enjoy in your lovely relaxing garden , so disappointed it has been taken off the menu . Hope it returns soon so that we can keep coming back ! !

Stayed here to break the journey en route to a short break in the Cotswolds, and took advantage of a £140 dinner, bed and breakfast deal which was really good value. The rooms are a specially build block separate from the pub and across one of the best pub gardens I've been in. There are ten rooms, in a row, almost like converted stables, comprising a decent sized bedroom and shower room. Decor is contemporary, and very decent but the shower needed some maintenance to the edge seals. Food was brilliant both the 2 course evening meal and the following breakfast. Staff are super. Dogs are £15 extra and drinks are typically priced. Would use this again in the summer.

Had the Sunday carvery - it was really good, great value and lots of options! They are also dog friendly!! Rest of the menu looked great too - will definitely be back.

  • 5/5 Alison R. 1 year ago on Google
A wonderful Sunday carvery, plenty of selection calmly organised by polite and pleasant staff. The beef was cooked to perfection, roast potatoes were delicious, so too were carrots, cauliflower, parsnips and broccoli. Huge yorkshire puddings too! Would certainly return. A great place to have a Sunday roast...!

Old fashioned traditional pub. Modern decor with inviting atmosphere. I also stayed in one of the rooms at the back and was pleasantly surprised by the comfort and facilities.

Bedrooms are "shabby chic" but very comfortable. Dinner was excellent! Well prepared, well seasoned and lots of it. The ribs are particularly good - really meaty - and I'd recommend the South African Share Platter. The next mornings breakfast was of generous proportions and again well prepared.

Good food - pie of the day for me. Generous portions. Nice furnishings and no sneaky service charge added on to the menu prices. Thanks Crown for a pleasant afternoon

  • 5/5 Mike D. 1 year ago on Google
A very nice Carvery. Very generous with the meat (the veggie option was nice too apparently) All of the veg was very nice, but the roast potatoes, although pretty good, could have been slightly better. The service was good. The beer garden is lovely, it must be great in the summer. The pub / restaurant was very busy when we were there (Sunday lunchtime) so I advise booking.

Second or third time we have been to wakes here. Always made welcome by the team. The food offering has always been very good, plenty of choice and well prepared. Several different sizes of room available for private events. If you are looking for a venue for modest sized events look no further. Lots of parking and easy to find.
