On our recent trip to London, we stopped by this pub because of the story of Queen Elizabeth and the Cherry Tree. It was such a cool and interesting place. They actually have the trunk of the cherry inside the pub. There's so many cool photographs on the walls showing times gone by. The bartenders were super friendly and told us many things about the pub that we knew nothing about. Definitely add it to your "to-do" list the next time you're in London, you'll love it!

Apart from when we were allowed to sit outside in the alley as part of the reopening from lockdown, I haven’t been in the Old Mitre for a good period of time. London Pride is a standard at Fullers pubs and I thought I’d have that. No, not available, I was told. Ok, what’s similar I asked. ‘Oldschool’ was suggested. Ok a pint of that. £5. I proffered a tenner. No, we don’t accept cash. Fine. Other customers came in and asked for Pride. Not on, they were told. I also heard someone say that it was in the cellar but they haven’t tapped it yet. The Oldschool then was finished, so I had been given the last from the barrel. It was ok to drink though, but obviously I wasn’t going to get another. I also heard another fellow order some other bitter and that it was off too, probably bottom of the barrel, but the bar person still served it. So the pub doesn’t do food, and tries to offer too many beers, and seems to have difficulty doing that. I had planned to meet some old friends there later this week but have changed my plans. This experience might be a one off of course. Monday Blues. Except that it is Tuesday today.

It was very obvious I had zero idea what to do or expect during a busy Wednesday evening, but the gentlemen behind the bar were incredibly patient and courteous. I've been wanting to go here for years, and I'm so glad this was my first experience. All the charm and character you'd ever hope for from a London pub. However, don't come here expecting a full meal to be available like I mistakenly did. The meat pie was still yummy nonetheless. Wish I had the opportunity to try more beers! Pro-tip if you're trying to find it from Hatton Garden: look up!

Definitely a pub to visit at least once when in London! Not as hard to find as people make out - head through the gated entrance of Ely Place (I think the gates put people off) and look for the narrow passageway about 20m on your left. The pub is surprisingly spacious - three downstairs rooms and a labyrinth of outside space, with ledges and barrels to rest your drink. Unfortunately closed at weekends. The interior, as you would expect for a sixteenth century pub, has original features and an historic decor. Ales are Fullers, with a good selection of alternatives. Simple bar snacks and very friendly staff - as I said, a great place to visit! EDIT: Thanks for responding to my feedback! I only give five stars to places where I would return again and again. On a sunny afternoon I need more natural light indoors - so outside of your control. A personal preference of mine - no reflection on your exquisite establishment!

Wonderful historic pub hidden away down an alley. Closed at weekends. Great real ale. Can get very busy at lunchtimes and early evening, best to visit mid-afternoons. Might be difficult to move around if you are not fully mobile.

Step into the Ye Olde Mitre, and you'll feel like you've stumbled upon a hidden time capsule in the heart of bustling Holborn. Nestled down a narrow alleyway, this pub's history is as rich as its ale. As you enter, the low ceilings and timber beams transport you to an era long gone, evoking a sense of nostalgia and intrigue. The walls are adorned with antique memorabilia, each piece with its own story to tell. If only these walls could talk! The bar is a masterpiece in itself, polished to perfection after centuries of use. And speaking of the bar, the selection of ales is a delightful voyage for any beer enthusiast. From crisp, hoppy IPAs to smooth, creamy stouts, there's a pint to suit every palate. Now, brace yourself for a quirky treat - the pub's famous cherry tree! Legend has it that Queen Elizabeth I danced around this very tree with Sir Christopher Hatton. It's a living testament to the historical importance of the Ye Olde Mitre. The atmosphere is vibrant and convivial, with friendly locals and travelers from all walks of life engaging in lively banter. It's a place where conversations flow as freely as the ale, and friendships are forged over a shared appreciation for tradition and history. In the midst of London's fast-paced modernity, the Ye Olde Mitre stands proudly, preserving its heritage while welcoming new generations of patrons. A visit here is not just a stop for a drink; it's a journey back in time, a glimpse into the past, and an unforgettable experience. So, if you seek a taste of the authentic old-world charm, venture down that alleyway and discover the treasure that is the Ye Olde Mitre. Cheers to history, camaraderie, and a damn good pint!

Walking around chaotic London, you come across this wonderful English pub in a quiet, serene alley where you can already see tables before entering where you can spend a few moments of peace before continuing your tour. Highly recommended stop

A perfect little hideaway pub for an after work meet or just to go for a pint with friends. Make your way through the ally to a beautiful hidden pub that serves the best pints with quick service. Just below average London prices!! Lots of abstract seating on varied levels

An absolutely delightful pub that’s so tucked away you have to know where you’re going. It’s one of my favourite places to pop on a cold winter’s evening. London Pride on tap, friendly staff behind the bar, quirky small rooms tucked around corners, and a fire burning away near the bar. Be sure to try upstairs if the bar area is too busy. A truly “old school” pub menu of pork pies, cheese toasties, and scotch eggs. A real hidden gem that’s all too rare to come by in central London these days.

An absolute, if always overcrowded, gem. The pub is one of the oldest pubs in London (around since 1546, see pic) and once you are there you can see this. The architecture, the location... all just fit. The staff are lovely and they always have proper ale on tap with many interesting guest beers. They also do good food, I am told. I would recommend it but, given how busy it is every day... perhaps I shouldn't or I won't be able to get a seat any more 😁

Lovely old pub - really gave that warm proper pub feeling which can be hard to come by in Central London, with space outside, tiny but lovely outdoor space and lively atmosphere inside. Staff are friendly and good selection of drinks which is always a plus

Lovely old pub hidden away down an alley. Great selection of ales and a fantastic feel about the pub. Didn't have any food so I can't rate this aspect of the Mitre. One of the wife and my favourite pubs in London.

I visited here in October as part of a birthday tour around some of London's oldest pubs. A small, quirky pub tucked away down a small alleyway. What a fantastic place, a real piece of old London. The front bar is quite small but cosy, there is outside seating to the front and undercover outside seating to the side and rear. Nice choice of ales on draught and bottle. Well worth a visit, I shall certainly be going back.

If you're walking along the street you would never know the gem of a pub is there. Hidden down an alley, this place is one of Londons best and oldest pubs. Good chive of drinks and the food looked nice but didn't have any on our visit. If you can find it the you definitely need to visit, you won't be disappointed.

As a big Snatch fan, I had to make a stop in to Ye Olde Mitre during a recent trip to London and it did not disappoint! Tucked away down a lane that’s easy to miss, it sits by its lonesome in all its 16th century quaintness and glory. Friendly staff, totally unpretentious. An extremely enjoyable place to raise a pint and soak in the character. Even though I didn’t see Avi this time, I’m sure I’ll be back.

In a side street from very fancy juveler street you will find this little pearl of a pub, small but worth a visit. Where there lunchtime on a Tuesday and it was very quiet. Not much of a lunch meny but ok.

Went for drinks today and to visit this lovely old pub. What a find, fantastic atmosphere. Barman so friendly and welcoming. Just a shame I have an allergy to cheese, we needed to move on to eat. Will definately return.

Cracking pub with lots of atmosphere. 5 real ales on today, from a variety of breweries. Food is fairly limited, sausage rolls, pork pies and toasties, but they go well with the beer. If you want a elaborate meal, book a restaurant (without the excellent selection of beers).

How old and how still contributes to London not as a tourist attraction, but as a place for locals.

These seem difficult times for Central London pubs and it was quiet when I visited. However, the service remained friendly and I was made to feel welcome. Reasonable choice of real ales, although perhaps a little generic. Pub was clean though, it felt quirky (in a good way) and it's worth a visit.

Nice little out of the way pub with a decent selection of beers. Seating is a little scarce inside and outside is a little awkward with it being an alley that has tables and people walk through it constantly. But saying all that I'd still go there for a nice Guinness and quick service.

Ye Olde Mitre really is the most hidden gem of a pub in London. Arguably the oldest and the smallest; still retains its 1546 charm. Accessed off a small narrow alley off Hatton Garden

Visited for the first time some months ago on a pub crawl, been back a few times since due to the lovely atmosphere and staff. I like that it's tucked away and hard to find. That being said it's not such a closely guarded secret and the after-work drinks lot can cause a bit of a crush post 5pm. But always good choice of drinks and the cosiness causes some nice conversations with strangers. Who knows maybe there's some ancient magic in the old wooden beams and well trodden carpet that just make kind spirited folk imbibe and chat. ;)

If you “fancy a proper pint” while visiting London, we’d recommend a visit to Ye Olde Mitre. Opened in 1547 (that’s not a typo), it offers limited seating both inside and out. It can be a little tricky to find, since it is located in a small alley, so this is not the place you just happen upon. You need to set out in search of it. We’d recommend navigating the extremely narrow staircase in order to toast with friends at “The Bishop’s Room” upstairs. Its cozy environs are coveted by locals in the know. We arrived in the early afternoon to find it completely empty. However, long before we could finish our drinks it became a standing room only situation. Food choices are limited to homemade bar snacks, so plan your visit here mostly for the beverages. We found this to be a great place to stop for a quick respite from sightseeing. And that’s…Henry’s Take. #londonpubs

Fascinating little pub. I've worked in London for 40 years and never stumbled on this place. It's tucked down a little alley and if you don't know it's there you just WON'T know it's there! Loved the charm of it, great staff and traditional decor, definitely worth sniffing out.

Cracking little pub hidden away behind Hatton Garden. It's good during the day but can get really busy in the evenings which means it's standing room only as its pretty small. Well worth a visit if you want a pub with some atmosphere and are in the area

This pub is hidden down narrow, atmospheric lantern-lit alley. It can get crowded at peak times but, during the day, its a lovely place to be.. especially in its smaller bar with the open fire lit. Staff are friendly and the venue has a lot of character. If there are any negatives it would be the limited selection of real ales and outside loos.

We stopped off for quick refreshments at this beautiful old pub. Hidden in one of London's mysterious alleyways off Hatton Garden. Established in 1546 this pub has lots of character both inside and outside. Friendly staff. If you're in the area, this is a must visit.

A blink and you'll miss it historic pub tucked down a narrow alleyway in Hatton Garden, the Ye Olde Mitre is a gem. The food menu is simply scrawled on a chalk board by the bar and they do toasted sandwiches, pork pies and scotch eggs. A definite must visit if you like a cosy boozer with plenty of character.

Have wanted to come here for years. So glad I did. Excellent cask ale; very historic interior. Very busy as others have said but managed to get a seat for myself and the daughters. Bar staff were first class; friendly, funny with time for a chat and very efficient service in spite of how busy it was. Didn't try the food so can't comment on that. Everything I like in a pub to be honest. Will definitely be back.

Ye old mitre is tucked in a small alley way of hatton garden quite difficult to find. It is said it is one of the oldest site's of an ale house in London. Open since 1547, Ye Olde Mitre comes gloriously decked out with dark wood panelling, and has more than its share of ancient pubby virtues – not to mention local tales. It’s said that Good Queen Bess once danced around the cherry tree that now forms part of the wall of the front bar, and it’s easy to imagine Dickensian villa alley outside . Food is basic pub grub (cheese toasties, pork pies, pickled eggs)
