🚇 Blackfriars 🍺 £5.00 Organic Lager ❤️ A unique historic London pub that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. . I often get asked which is my favourite pub? or what’s your top ten? and I can never choose because I have so many favourites for many different reasons. But one pub I would always recommend to visit is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese as this pub experience is like no other. . As you approach the pub on busy Fleet Street it’s easy to miss it, when I first came here I walked past it a couple of times before I sussed out the entrance is in a small alley at the side. As you enter the pub it is a real attack on the senses, it’s dimly lit, the smell of the open fire and it’s confusing on where to go. The best option is to grab a beer from the first bar on the right as you enter and then go for a wander to discover the many different alcoves, bars, nooks and crannies. As you head further in to the pub and descend the steep staircases and peer in to the many seating areas and cellars it fills you full of wonder and excitement about what lies around the next corner. On this visit I sat in the bottom bar/cellar which was busy and as with all areas of the pub is very atmospheric. This is a Sam Smiths pub which only sells it’s own in house beers, wines and spirits, I had the Organic Lager which was ok but this is not somewhere I come to for the beer, that said there was a good selection on offer. There is also food available serving up British classics. I would recommend visiting during the week as this pub is hot on the tourist trail and you will often hear an American twang here and there and it’s also popular with day trippers. . As mentioned earlier, this is a must visit pub. This is a place to immerse yourself in to a piece of history and soak up the unique atmosphere. It’s easy to imagine what it was like drinking in a London pub two hundred years ago which not many other pubs can offer. . 📊 Information correct on visiting 06/11/21

Food needs a bit more attention - one of my friends ordered the pepper humous, she left it...it was definitely watered down and just bland. My scotch egg was absolutely fine, served with yummy mustard Piccadilly... highly recommend. My two friends ordered and shared the cheese board, they had to ask for more crackers, as there definitely wasn't enough for two to share. Atmosphere was great... felt as if I'd gone back in time. House red wine was delicious 😋 Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Historic pub dating back to the 1600s! This is one of the places that Charles Dickens and Dr Samuel Johnson drank! Very atmospheric, with high quality food and drinks!

The place with a long history, having been in business since 1538. About 0.3miles from St. Paul’s Cathedral, If you are travelling nearby, be sure to visit. The Pub with 17 monarchs, including Charles III and the current King. The Pub has a long history when you look at the clock on the walls, pictures frames, fireplaces etc.. It is said that it was rebuilt after the Great Fire of England in 1667. It was a hangout for many writers and journalists, including Samuel Johnson(the first English lexicographer), and British writer Charles Dickens. The path down underground along the narrow passage is like a maze. Be sure to go underground to feel like you are exploring the basement of a medieval castle. If you go into the alley next to Fleet Street, the entrance will appear. The classic, antique, and weighty atmosphere makes you imagine writers and journalists talking about various topics such as politics, economy, society, culture and Love without realizing the passage of time. You can easily get inspired and have some leisurely time in this focused atmosphere.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is an absolute gem in London! Stepping into this 600-year-old pub feels like a journey back to 1500 AD. The historic ambiance is unparalleled, offering a unique experience unlike any other. A must-visit spot for anyone exploring London!

This Grade II listed building is one of London’s oldest and most iconic pubs. There has been a pub at this location since 1538, but it was rebuilt in 1667 after being damaged in the Great Fire of London. If you dare to descend the treacherous stone stairs, parts of the cellars are much older (as the building was previously home to a monastery). I’m not a fan of Sam Smith’s ales and I always get the impressive that their employees aren’t the happiest to be working at Sam Smith’s establishments. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of traditional British pubs then you must visit this place.

I really wanted to give this place 5-stars because the food and vibe is great but unfortunately I almost choked on a piece of plastic that was mixed in my mashed potato and gravy. I literally had to pull the plastic out from the back of my throat because I wasn’t really chewing when eating the mashed potato at the time. There was only one waiter on duty that day (it was the Jubilee bank holiday), I informed him about the incident and all he said is that he will let the kitchen know. I had no time to take this further because I was in a hurry but also I don’t think there was anyone to take it further with anyway. Very disappointed with this incident and I will not be back. Service was also not very friendly.

It was described to me one of the oldest pubs in London and it felt as such. You walked through a tiny path to get to it, the first step is worn down due to 300+ years of use, the glass windows are old, the bar felt cooler, and even the benches felt aged - and I expected nothing less, it all added to the atmosphere. A decent selection of draught and bottle beers and a small menu with starters and main courses, lots of roasts. The food was good and i wish the service sizes were a bit larger. I was also disappointed that there was no fish and chips that day. The staff was very friendly and prompt, helpful with the menu and questions. The feeling you get when sitting was 'if these walls could talk...' You felt you're part of history being there - glad we went.

I was looking forward to visiting the pub. While the whole location feels quite eerie, the vibe is quite chill. The food was good but the customer service needs so.e improvement. While they were attentive, they lacked sometimes in being assertive about what we needed, and the kitchen was very slow. Maybe because of the layout of the pub???!!!

A truly authentic place that has good food good service and amazing atmosphere what more could you ask for. The pub was rebuilt in 1667 having 15 sovereigns over it as well as having many famous public figures like Dr. Jhonson the guy who created a version of the dictionary and charles dickens as well as many others. The pub is a must if you are interested in fairly modern British history.

One of the coolest bars I’ve ever been to in my life. I remember seeing this advertised before I went on my trip and had to explore and go here for the right history. I’m glad I was able to share this moment with my friends and myself. I definitely will be returning here next time I’m swinging through London. This right here? My favorite pub.

I don't think this world famous pub needs much introduction but, Oscar, who runs the Chop house restaurant inside the pub is a real pro and gracious host - he treated us like royalty! The food was nice, more 4 star than 5, but as everything else was so wonderful I graded up. Our whole group had a fantastic experience.

Amazing place full of London history. Positive points: The pub takes you back to the 19th century or further in time. The food is good as your beers. Up to this point everything is perfect. Negative point: The service provided by the waiters, very slow and bad, we had to claim for tap water, after he lost a dish. A professional knows that if he serves two dishes, one is missing from a table of three. Thirty minutes after we had to claim the dish, incredible. The excuse was the best. In the kitchen they got his note wrong. The place deserves better service.

Down a narrow alley is this gem. Rebuilt in 1667, serves high quality traditional English classics. Steak and kidney pie, fish and chips and several contemporary dishes such a meatless winter root pie. Cozy and warm with a fragrant fire going in the chop room and bar. The pace is slow, so not a quick in and out. Beer is very tasty, fresh pulled from oak barrels . Much bigger on the inside that it appears from the outside. Don’t be put off by the long line for takeaway sandwiches across the way at noon.

My visit to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese during my London trip was truly unforgettable! Tucked away in a charming alley, this historic pub oozes with charm. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a cozy atmosphere, complete with a crackling fire and the delightful scent of oak and cedar. It instantly reminded me of the warm and smoky ambiance of barbecue restaurants back home in Texas, blending a sense of comfort with London's unique character. The selection of beers here is exceptional, with Sam Smith's being a standout in terms of quality and taste. Exploring the cellar, which dates back to the 17th century, felt like journeying through time. Its intimate ambiance and low ceilings, humorously warned by signs, add to the pub's authentic charm and historical significance. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is not just a pub; it's a living piece of history. The likes of Charles Dickens were regular patrons, and you can't help but feel a connection to the past in this storied setting. And who could forget the famous parrot that once graced this establishment? Its story, among others, adds an intriguing layer to the pub's legacy. In conclusion, a visit to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese offers more than just a pint of beer. It's an immersive experience that transports you deep into London's rich tapestry of history and culture. A must-visit for anyone looking to experience the authentic heart of London! 🍺🔥🇬🇧

It's obviously a lovely pub, especially the fireplace. But I have to give you a low rating because the massive price increase is ridiculous. On top of Covid, why give people another reason not to visit? I used to go to Sam Smith's pubs regularly. But I don't agree with the drastic price increase at all. If I stop by now, it's for one pint only. If the increase is necessary to help keep things afloat during Covid times, it's somewhat understandable, but I'd expect the prices to return to a reasonable level. As it is, these pubs have lost one of their biggest selling points. Humphrey Smith is a fool. Last night most of the beers were off. We had a couple of stouts, which weren't as good as usual. Thin watery stouts, rather than the smooth pint it usually is. Drinkable so didn't complain, but not good enough.

Great atmosphere (they have a real fireplace, even two of them!), friendly staff. Unfortunately, the food could've been better overall, especially if you take into account prices here, which are on the high end. The steak pie I had was okayish, but its crust was soggy, and the potato mash was almost tasteles.

Enjoyed a fabulous lunch here today with my daughter. I enjoyed the Steak Pie, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Delicious. The pub is divided into many rooms and spaces throughout the building. The dining room on the main floor is filled with historical charm. A must see. The place claims to have been in existence since 1667. You won't be disappointed.

Both of the Southern fried chicken burger and banger & mash are very very good. Definitely somewhere good to eat. The ambience is good and vintage but very limited tables upstairs for customer to dine in but tables are sufficient for customer to drink downstairs.

Our firm favourite in London, it takes you back to 1600s in an instant. History is oozing out of every detail (except for the till and contactless card reader!), we absolutely love it. Samuel Smith’s beers are delicious too!

Absolutely beautiful pub rich with history. Amazing toffee pudding and cherry beer (I went in November and I’m still thinking about it). Staff were friendly and joked around with us as they set up xmas decorations. It does get bewilderingly crowded at times, so off peak hours might be the best play here.

Lovely pub and friendly staff. I've been a few times before and always enjoyed it but there was no bitter on yesterday afternoon (no bitter at Sam Smith's is unusual!). Sounds a bit petty but a number of other customers felt the same and went elsewhere. We tried the mild instead which was alright but way too cold so ended up leaving after one drink. Other beers were on but nothing I would typically drink. Still a great place for tourists to step back into history. I'll go back in a few weeks and hopefully edit this rating upwards!

I had a lovely evening here. Ate the devilled whitebait, and fish and chips. Both dishes were abundant and very nice. The beer was also top-notch. Everything only possible, because of Simona. I walked in spontaneously and she made sure that i got a place to eat. Give that girl a raise, she's doing a tremendous job. Thank you very much.

I had been wanting to go to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for a while to participate in the history of the place. It was so cool to think through how many people had sat in the pub, enjoyed a pint, fish and chips, and great conversation with good friends. The experience did not disappoint and the food and drinks were both tasty.

Came for Sunday roast, they were not serving any food. However, a must see pub because of the history and atmosphere! They seemed quite understaffed too. There was only one bar stand open, but very friendly. (Did come on Remembrance Day)

Very nice food and Samuel Johnson. I have to admit, sitting in front of his portrait and have some steak and kidney pudding is interesting. The food and ale is spot on, and the place certainly brought out how old pubs are like. Crowd chatter, short staircase and dim light. Also it's in a turn of alleyway so don't miss that.

Great spot for a pint. Cool building with multiple levels and lots of seating. Beers are good, didn’t get to try any food/snacks. Atmosphere is awesome!

Stopped in for a drink and to see what this place was all about. It is very cool, and the history of this place is fascinating. We met a man that popped in for a pint ( I named him Jerry) who told us about Cheshire Cheese history and how the sitting area was once an alleyway. And how it started out as a small room and has just slowly took over bits of the alleyways and such. Restrooms are down a couple of levels, where there is dining and another bar. Wish we had a bit more time to explore. The cider was delicious as well.

Fantastic historic pub with so many areas to sit and enjoy a beer. Haven’t had a meal here (£17 for a burger is a bit steep for me) but as a proper old pub experience, this is highly recommended.

Very good food, we had a private room rented upstairs, great service and very kind staff. A little bit too dark inside but other than that no complaints. Good spot to sit down for a meal or just have a casual drink.

  • 4/5 Ajibike M. 1 year ago on Google
It’s surprising how massive the pub is when you get inside. There’s different floors and sections so depending on if you’re with many people or a date you could have an intimate setting or somewhere a bit more busy. I’m didn’t get a larger or beer so I can’t comment on the brewery.

  • 5/5 Sheri L. 1 year ago on Google
We had a great time at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese! They have a ton of rooms open for drinking, however only one for eating. For those interested in dining, go in through the main door and turn left into the dining room (it's small room so make sure you either have reservations or come early). We didn't have reservations but they were able to seat us (party of 2) right away on a Friday night. I highly recommend their steak and ale pie! It was delicious and I would definitely go back the next time I'm in London.

Ye Old Cheshire Cheese is one of Londons historic pubs built in 1667, and was one of the inns used by Charles Dickens, its dark wood panelled interior, lack of daylight and sawdust on the floor adds to its mysterious atmosphere and makes you feel you have stepped into a Charles Dickens novel, this place has a lot of rooms and bars including in the cellar and is a fantastic place to have a beer in, it has to be one of the most interesting ancient pubs in the UK.

  • 2/5 Terry R. 2 years ago on Google
Hmm, it might be an old historic building, but the reality is it’s very dark and dingy and didn’t feel very clean. And it’s a Sam Smiths pub so they only sell beers you’ve never heard of. And at six pounds fifty a pint!

  • 4/5 Nitin R. 2 years ago on Google
The fish and chips I ate was best I had till date in london. Staff could be a bit nicer but you cannot expect most friendly behaviour from an old man. So thats the bit I did not rate a total five which I never do.

Visit: 28 December 2021 Mixed feelings! Welcome: maximum 1 star, unfriendly lady behind the desk. Looks like she doesn't want customers, When asked if there can be dinner at 17:25 the answer is no, there is no dinner possible. Correct: but at 17:30 dinner is server (tip from another customer).... Strange! But all was compensated by the waitress!!! Friendly, service with a big SMILE!!! Food is good: tasteful and nice. And... good prices! So the waitress deserves a big 5 star!!

Very old pub with a great history going back to the great fire of London. Beautiful interior of wood giving a warm comfortable feeling. Samuel Smith ale on hand pump and truly tasty to drink. Honestly one of the greatest pubs I have every been and makes it a jewel in London.

  • 2/5 Tom B. 2 years ago on Google
Stunning old interior, worth visiting just to see it. Feels very old and atmospheric especially in the winter with the log fire. However the beer choice is pretty poor, all Sam smith beers and a couple were off when I went so I was left with a couple of lagers and a couple of stouts, no non Sam smith beers at all. The service was very poor, the barman was being very abrupt with people using Amex, get a sign or something rather than shouting at every customer.
