Went out to the rest for my 40th Birthday on the 19/11. All guests arrived by 15:30. The restaurant was fairly empty. Drinks were a tad slow. But what was the nail in the coffin, finally when we ordered our food, it took the waiter a good 30 min to come tell us that they only had 1 rump steak left in the building. (three people ordered the rump). The food took a long time. At this stage I went to find the manager, explained to him what the issue was. He knew there were issues, not once did he come around to apologies or speak to us, shocking SERVICE! Our starters came at about 16:45, bearing in mind the restaurant was empty. The only redeeming factor was that the food was of a good quality.

Updating this in light of a few poor visits over the last 6 months. Since first visiting this place around 3 years ago it has progressively gone down hill. Whilst the front of house staff generally seem lovely, there simply aren't enough of them for the number of customers on a busy night. This means that despite lots of initial attention, you shouldn't expect to see anyone after your mains are delivered unless you wave wildly or resort to going to the bar to ask. Menu items are regularly unavailable, on more than one occasion we've been told after ordering that they have run out of one or more items. After ordering something that is actually available the quality seems to vary. The staples are done well enough. Pizzas, pasta, burgers and brunch are all decent quality. However specials and other food isn't great quality. Often over or under cooked depending on the item. Overall I want to like this restaurant, but each of my recent visits has left a sour taste in my mouth, and led me to feel I wouldn't want to return in a hurry.

I’m sorry but whoever was seemingly in charge of the restaurant on 26th July was an utter disgrace. We sit down, order some drinks and olives for the table. The beer tastes like it’s at the end of the barrel, no big deal… however, the olives were rancid. They tasted off and were fizzing in our mouths. After our experience with the olives, we decided that we’d rather take our chances elsewhere… and looking at recent Google reviews, our decision seemed wise… I inform one of the waitress’ that we’d clear the bill for the drinks but would like the olives removed. The waitress goes off and explains the situation to a ‘manager’. The ‘manager’ proceeds to interrogate us about how we arrived at our decision. Not a single apology and we were berated and spoken to aggressively for sticking by leaving. It all culminated in the ‘manager’ slapping the bill on the table and storming off in a huff, WITH the olives still on the bill! About 5 minutes pass with the ‘manager’ serving other people in that time and completely ignoring us. Eventually, we decide to leave as the level of rudeness on top of the disgusting food was too much to take on the chin. We leave and halfway down the road the ‘manager’ is shouting at us from the entrance. We turn back and explain the situation once more about why we had left. The ‘manager’ explains how it’s not fair as the ‘chef had started cooking our food’. A clear lie designed to try and guilt trip us into returning as we hadn’t even got to the point of ordering mains! Rather embarrassingly I point this out, an awkward moment of silence ensues only for the ‘manager’ to go off on an insane ramble about how loads of other people had ‘really enjoyed the olives’. An absolutely shocking experience, not even Basil Fawlty could dream this one up. Honestly what the hell was that?! If you can’t handle people telling you that the olives were off, get another job! Avoid this place like the PLAGUE!!

Turned up with high expectations, but was met with low quality service, confused staff, and cold mains and desserts. Me and my partner ordered a fillet steak “off the grill”; the steak that arrived was cold and disappointing for the price i was paying. We then decided to order a brownie for dessert; this was clearly microwaved as one side was cold and the other was mildly warm. Overall very disappointed with the price I paid and what I received.

amazing restaurant, not too expensive too. had the eggs royale and a half pint of cider, the latter being more aligned to london prices. was on a weekday midday and not too busy, a little slow service initially but friendly enough.

Good food and lovely setting. However, service is very poor, which is a total shame as The Banyers used to be the go-to place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. Every time I have visited in the past couple of years (and I have visited a fair few times), the service has been terribly slow. I have had to flag staff down to order food/drinks and even follow up with drinks orders that have not been put through. Sometimes I have been told to get up and order at the bar myself by a waitress. Almost every time I have visited with family or friends the orders have been mixed up or forgotten. It has also taken over 1.5 hours for the food to come on some occasions. The food is lovely but you’ll have to wait a while for it to come!

We recently had our wedding reception at the Banyers. The building itself is wonderful. We used the function room and booked a couple of the hotel rooms for getting ready and staying the night of the wedding. Everything is well presented and clean, a great setting for wedding photographs and all around a comfortable place to be! What really blew us away is the staff here. When we approached the Banyers we met our coordinator Hannah and we were instantly put at ease and so excited to work more with her. Our wedding was short notice but it was never a problem. We felt like we could ask Hannah anything and we very much did! We met several times to update plans and we were always met with a smile and a fun experience. We also got to meet the head chef and sample his wedding menu, what a mindblowing afternoon that was! All of the food is delicious and we could tell how much pride and effort he and the kitchen team put into their work. The process of ordering our food was simple and pricing was very clear for the various options available. They are super flexible which was great. When the wedding finally came, Hannah was always close by making sure it all ran smoothly and offering any help we needed. The rest of the staff were also absolutely amazing. From being there late with us setting up the night before, to packing things down the day after. We got to spend several hours with them across our time there and they are a really friendly and caring bunch. Cannot thank them enough for all their help! The wedding turned out super special and intimate, we absolutely made the right choice holding it at the Banyers House and will be customers at the restaurant many times in the future!

Had a lovely meal of sirloin steak on the bone, cooked how I asked with chips & side salad, followed by a pot of tea & a warm Portuguese tart. The service was perfect. It was a really nice experience of cleanliness, polite staff & great food.

Banyers House offers all day dining for guests and walk ins. We popped in for lunch just after 2pm. Initially on entering we were ignored by a man behind the bar, it seemed that his shift was over, he needed to update his colleague taking over, there was absolutely no acknowledgement of us at all. When I asked the lady that was taking over if we could have lunch she said No, at my perplexed expression she then said of course you can. I said we'd not been to Banyers before. (We were initially unaware of the times the restaurant was serving food). Our table wasn't very stable but we managed to not spill our drinks and eat our food, the Malbec wine was delicious, the coffee my partner had was ok. My bolegnese was ok, lacked depth of flavour imo, but it was hot and filling, my partner had a fish finger sandwich that was fairly large, nicely presented and delicious with salad and a dressing on the side. The service we received from our waitress was friendly and courteous,. The table was laid with nice cutlery and pristine white linen napkins which is a nice touch. The surroundings, however, leave a lot to be desired, the whole place needs a good clean and tidy up, we found food debris on the window cills and floor, our view outside was of a courtyard with outdoor tables, the area was full of leaves and moss. Which gives it an un cared for look and feel, In my opinion a bit more attention to detail would lift this venue from ok to very good. The restaurant does have a 5☆ hygiene rating. In short it's a lovely building in a nice area but as my school report often said, can do better if paid more attention.

Visited twice. Enjoyed my meal the first time although the wait was rather long. Second time I visited we waited 5 minutes before having to ask for menus, people seated after us were seen too before and we decided to leave after waiting 15 minutes to have our order taken. It was really quiet which is why it was very disappointing. If you want quick service i would definitely not suggest the banyers.

Arrived 3am after a delayed flight to very helpful night porter service, my bag was lost but the staff team were helpful in directing me to the right shops for what I needed for a customer meeting. Rooms were spacious and well presented and the food was lovely. Great experience, though short and stressful!

Absolutely fantastic food and services in the beautiful restaurant. We only had a 3 course lunch here, though if that is anything to go by I'm sure the accommodation would be brilliant too. Very highly recommended and we will definitely be visiting again. Thank you for the excellent service.

We held our post Wedding Dinner here, the service was fantastic and they managed to accommodate all 26 of us even after a Plumbing leak had lead to the original room being unavailable. The alternative room and atmosphere they created was amazing and hats off to the whole team especially Hannah and Kim who organized it all. For those also looking for an event venue this is a great place to choose in Royston and has two set menu's of options to choose from. I can testify that Set Menu A was not only amazing but all of our group loved it. We also had a couple of our group staying at Banyers House as well and they enjoyed their over night stay.

I'd not been before last night and went to have a meal with a friend. Really lovely surroundings and the food was superb. The service from everyone was lovely but the lady who brought most of our food and who instinctively split our bill for us was briliant. I will definitely be back and will definitely not be sharing the haloumi chips next time - they will be all mine!!

Restaurant has beautiful interior, light, spacious, great view in the back garden of the trees. The service was slow so you need to not be in a rush. But the food was delicious. I went twice in one week. For Sunday lunch with family. Best Sunday lunch I've ever had out. Also went for a work lunch. I had a salad which was fantastic. Everyone from work said their meal was great. The food on the more expensive side but good quality food, nice portion size, good kids menu. Highly recommend. I will be returning.

Friendly service and great food - especially liked the Eton Mess Sundae and the porchetta. A few things weren't available, and no specials menu presently, but the friendly waitress explained it all well so no problem.

Fab place we ate in a pod, fantastic, heated, music, lighting all controlled by you and a service button on the table. We will go again as the food was brilliant. Service was exceptional. Well done guys.

We love this place and have been many a time in the past. However we have recently had a very poor experience where we had to wait more than an hour for our food on a not so busy morning, with no explanation nor excuse from the waiting staff, no offer for more drinks, and an overall negative attitude. Food was very nice as usual, just disappointed by the service.

Banyers house is a beautiful hotel. The rooms are very well equipped even including GHD's in the room as standard. The breakfast's are absolutely delicious and a real treat. Best thing though is that all the staff are happy in their jobs. They are all so friendly and happy to help. They all set the tone for such a lovely experience when you stay here. Special mention to Dawn and Amberly. Nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend this beautiful hotel.

We only went to the restaurant. The food was not bad but the service was quite slow. This was one of our parties second visit and we were warned by her about the slow service before going. This did not bother us as we are retired but for some people it may be an issue

Very friendly helpful staff. Interesting mix of old & new in the architecture. Booked because it had aircon. Secondary double glazing plus blackout curtains = good night's sleep. Lovely bathroom with large walk in shower. Some minor house keeping issues, but would stay again.

Food was decent, extensive menu but a shame there were a few dishes unavailable. Good selection of beers, spirits and cocktails. Nice large outdoor area including private dining bubbles. Clearly short staffed which was a shame and no bar, even for those staying at the hotel after 11pm which is really poor. Would go again, hoping there would be more staff next time.

It’s the perfect Pub Hotel in a great location it’s a shame that it’s ruined by its staff and it’s prices. My family and I was there for special occasion but we had to clear our own table twice, waited 25 minutes for 2 drinks to find out our waitress had left and not handed over us to another staff member. We was a party of 7 but the portions size was for a party of 4 with no drinks included. Wouldn’t recommended this place

COELIACS AVOID! I went to Banyers this evening with my partner and her parents who were visiting for a meal. My partner is coeliac and, in accordance with the instructions on the menu, she alerted our server to this and ordered dishes marked with the gf symbol. 10 minutes after arriving home her stomach was swollen to 4 times it’s normal size and she was vomiting violently - all tell-tale signs that she had consumed gluten. In defence of the venue they provided a full refund after her father went in to explain what had happened, but that doesn’t erase the issue.

Food is average & overpriced for what it is. Drinks poorly maintained - coke flavourless. Staff were not particularly attentive, and service after the mains was very slow with not a great attitude shown by our waitress. Overall pretty disappointing. Considering the price, this place seems to be presented as something it definitely isn't.

We used to really enjoy visiting Banyers house as a treat on the weekends for breakfast. It is sadly not the same anymore. The standard has significantly dropped and was way overpriced for the poor breakfast we had. Scrambled eggs were overcooked, cold mushrooms, and the 1 Croissant we ordered didn't get put through. Our daughter had to wait an additional 10 min for this, by which time we had finished. I'm really disappointed and have booked for a meal at Christmas, but I am now debating if we should cancel this.

Very comfy bed and nice bathroom. The bright green light in the ceiling disturbed our sleep unfortunately but other than that the room was nice. The breakfast was nice but service is extremely slow. 45 minutes is a long time to wait!

I can only review the food as have never stayed in the hotel itself. It's a strange one this one, we've eaten here before for Sunday roasts and main courses in the week and it's been fantastic. However we tried the breakfast today and it was really really terrible. This may well be the worst breakfast I've had in a long while and unfortunately I can't even overlook it on the basis of previously good experiences the breakfast is really shameful. Poor quality eggs, no color what so ever. Poached eggs raw inside and fried eggs annihilated in the pan. Mushrooms not peeled not eatable. Bacon reheated/ chewy. Poor quality sauages also reheated. Beans cold. Toast cold. Happy shopper hash browns... For the extortionate price of £45 for 2 of us and a kids meal. I told the waitress and she basically said nothing and did.nothing didn't care. Really disappointing

Thank you Banyers for amazing food today. Best roast dinner, even better than my own lol. Looking after 8 guests can be hard work. Thank you to the new Manager for making our birthdays extra special love Jean Stacey Steph. Look forward to visiting again soon. Highly recommend Banyers

On Friday the 14th of April I was lucky enough to marry my beautiful wife and hold our wedding reception at Banyers House. We had the most amazing day and all of our guests loved the venue and food. Hannah (our wedding planner) and her team were exceptional, nothing was too much trouble for them, they made our day go seamless, I can’t praise them highly enough. As a chef the food was excellent, some of the tastiest food I’ve had the pleasure to eat in a long time. A few guest even stated it’s the best wedding they have ever been too. Lovely staff, stunning venue and exquisite food. Great wedding packages and lovely rooms available, especially the honeymoon suite, super comfortable bed and stunning bathroom with a lovely big bath. I highly recommend anyone to hold their wedding at this wonderful venue. Banyers House will be our go to venue for future celebrations.

One of the best rooms we've stayed in for a long time. Huge room, bed and bathroom with pretty much everything you need for a relaxing stay. Staff were super friendly and attentive. Would definitely stay again. Some road noise from passing cars but wasn't to bad. Ample parking and lots of different areas to sit.

Stayed here while attending a wedding nearby, so only in the hotel for a short while! The staff were excellent on booking and arrival, able to facilitate an early check in at noon for a £20 fee. The room itself was nearly very nice but was worn and a bit tired. Biggest issues were the air con grinding every 10 minutes and there being no hot water… Nice building, nice staff, lovely breakfast and good restaurant.

  • 3/5 Jeff J. 2 years ago on Google
It's a lovely building. The staff are very friendly. Our breakfasts were nice. The bed very comfortable and decor of the room was, let's call it 'traditionally stylish' (that's meant as a compliment). It was a shame that the loud bar music continued to midnight, which stopped us getting to sleep when we wanted. Photo of my breakfast included for comparison with the photo on their website (note that I asked for no tomato).

Had an excellent dinner recently. Liked the food, ambience as well as the very courteous staff, one of whom my toddler may have fallen in love with. Will definitely visit again to have that sea bass with rice.

Excellent. Big family get together on Christmas Eve and everything was spot on. OK they missed a couple of starters but thar doesn't detract from the evening. Food was really good, fish and chips was the best. Service was great by all the staff and excellent value too. Definitely recommend it.

Excellent Food, Service, and Atmosphere. Had Dinner at Banyers House on New Years Eve and everything was spot on. Great service, staff and managers was very friendly. Food was really good, Amazing pizza from the Italian chef and steak was cooked to perfection. Banyers house has a nice atmosphere up to date while complimenting the traditional architecture. Definitely recommend it.
