A surprising, unique and relaxed location for our family holiday with teenage/young adult children. Location was superb- away from it all. Very quiet. Snorkelling straight out from your room, seeing dugongs and turtles. Wait Staff were lovely, kind and genuine. Management were also kind, helpful and genuine. Many once in a lifetime adventures were experienced venturing out during our stay. Our children loved it for its authenticity. We spent a week there.

Beautiful location on a calm safe tropical lagoon. Rooms are great set amongst tropical palms & lush gardens. The food is exceptional & the local Island staff are always happy to attend to your every wish with a huge smile.

Lovely resort with beautiful beach views. Snorkel right off the beach at nearby reefs. Staff are very friendly and rooms and spacious, comfortable and clean. At the restaurant food was often slow to come out and breakfast orders were sometimes incomplete but overall a lovely place to spend a week!

(2.5 stars) We booked four nights at the expensive Barrier Beach Resort. It was our second visit to the property, having previously stayed at it in 2014 under different owners when it was called Moyyan By The Sea. The room we booked, a beachfront fare, has aged but otherwise hasn’t really changed much in the ensuing decade. The king sized bed is soft but acceptable, the pillows flat bricks that need updating. The gardens have grown in further including beautiful staghorns that make the place feels lush and green. On this occasion, Air Vanuatu cancelled our booked flights (for the second time this holiday) shifting our arrival from Friday to Sunday. The resort refused to move our booking back two days citing being full, or refund us the nights that we could not use through no fault of our own. The Australian manager, Wayne, explained to my husband in the middle of the mostly full restaurant at dinner, that while he did have the discretion to do so, he wasn’t going to. This didn’t make me feel like a valued guest, so I left before our dessert arrived. By contrast the resort we stayed in on Tanna (who we couldn’t get to for FOUR of our booked nights due to Air Vanuatu cancelling flights, then rearranging our outgoing flights yet again), bent over backwards to help, changing our booking dates and deducting the food and beverage costs relating to consumption while we were there from what ended up being two nights we had paid for but couldn’t use. While I recognise Air Vanuatu is the primary cause of these problems, I didn’t walk away feeling good from Barrier Beach Resort. I would have if Wayne had offered to meet us half way. Sabine however was understanding and helpful, finding us email addresses for people at Air Vanuatu to see if we can finally get a reply that might assist us to recoup some of our lost monies on this trip via travel insurance. While the beach is pretty, the coral is not healthy or abundant, and the water was very cloudy on both days we actually stayed meaning visibility was limited. However I did get to see two stingrays, and a good 20 or so clownfish. At breakfast it pays to take a mental map of where the bommies are (dark patches) to minimise swimming kilometres over empty sand. The restaurant is acceptable without being great. There’s a decent list of cocktails if you like fruity tropical concoctions. The wine list is pedestrian. The menu mainstays are poulet and Santo beef. I tried them across a lightly flavoured ceviche, plump fishcakes, creamy surf (prawns, fish and calamari) and turf, seared poulet with lime butter, mash and veg., and two curries: madras Santo beef curry and poulet coconut curry, that we requested as spicy but received as mild. Bear in mind when booking here that it costs 1500VT (each way) to get to town in a taxi if you want to eat anywhere else. Oddly, bacon is priced as an add-on (450VT) to the hot breakfast included in your AUD 500+ room rate. That seems a bit, I don’t know, cheap? Tropical fruit only arrives if you know to ask directly for it, ditto toast with your omelette. Scrambled eggs arrive as pale yellow rubble, so choose fried and you’ll receive two fried eggs, two triangles of toast and a bit of butter in a dish. Shame when the island tomatoes are so vibrant not to dress up the plate with something. Barrier Beach Resort also tack on a 4.5% charge if you pay using a credit card while the rest of Vanuatu charges 3%. The expansion of the resort (which is really the joining of two neighbouring resorts) has also seen the introduction more rules. For example, a sign in the bathroom says you can’t use the white bath towels if you’re wearing makeup or suntan oil. You are also informed you can’t use the beach towels off the property. You’re not able to consume duty free alcohol on the beach in front of your fare on the sun lounges they put there for you to relax in. At the price point I expected to be gently shepherded. Maybe investor returns have become more important than the Melanesian charm that drew us back to Santo in the first place.

Unwind and relax in the tropical getaway. Vanuatu will experience a El-Nino Summer from Nov 2023 - Feb 2024. This may indicate less rainfall in the Southern Hemisphere Summer for Vanuatu, with warmer and drier conditions that may indicate drought conditions if sustained times of dryness occur. Water conservation will be important. Solar Panel electricity may fair very well in a El-Nino. Tourism may fair well due to splendid weather. As weather remains fine fishing is available due to sun and favoured winds with OK wave conditions. Planting of summer fruits and veges is recommended provided there is watering on land (Sweet potato, Corn, Tomatoes, Mangoes). The adverse weather patterns may exist further east at the Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Niue expanse east of the dateline with Vanuatu within a lessened risk of a cyclone occurance in the next 3 months although a possibility. Trade winds will weaken at the equatorial area of the Tropical Pacific = west central and east. A category 5 (190mph winds) weather system recently sprung from the East Pacific Equatorial area.

What a beautiful beach and such lovely staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our 7 night stay at a beach fare. The food was amazing & the people staying at the resort that we met were so so nice. The earthquakes were quite surprising but we managed perfectly I would encourage anyone to come to Santo & experience Barrier Beach Resort Did I mention that ALL the staff were wonderful 💜💜

A stunning resort in an even more beautiful setting. The ocean right in-front of you is warm and clear, we saw multiple turtles while sitting on the deck overlooking the ocean. The snorkelling is great with a variety of sea-life to see. The resorts facilities were fantastic, from the free use of bikes, kayaks, snorkelling gear and stand up paddle boards, to the rooms and the restaurant and bar. The staff were so accommodating and friendly, they made us feel at home and that nothing was too much trouble. Booking tours through the resort was made easy and they had great recommendations for us. A special mention to Rob who really helped us out when we faced flight cancellations, making us feel a lot more at ease in a stressful situation. All in all, if you are looking for a quiet and serene place to base yourself in Santo where you can truly relax and unwind from the busyness of life, I wouldn’t hesitate in booking Barrier Beach Resort.

Perfect place to relax. Probably the best resort on Santo. Pretty kind service, lush vegetation, rich breakfast. Rooms are located in separated houses and allow a perfect privacy without being too far away from hotels amenities. Internet mostly works well with some downtimes (obviously countywide and not in the hotel's responsibily). Hotel accepts creditcards, which is not standard in Vanuatu for shops, tours, drivers etc. (bring local currency for those places). Free shuttle from/to airport (20 mins ride).

We indeed had a great time at BBR, but we thought we will draw attention to the shortcoming of BBR which has left a bitter taste in our mouth, and hope BBR will try to fix the same. After paying the top price for the resort A$ 563/ night ( which we would have an excellent resort in Asia or in Australia itself) for an executive room with private plunge pool. We decided to go ahead with BBR considering that it was our 25th Anniversary and we want to spend our memorable time at the place. What we noticed: - Rooms were not cleaned daily; bins were not empty, toilets were not cleaned nor the linens were changed daily, finally, we have to ask housekeeping staff and remind them, the only thing they do is make up the bed and go, at one time even the tea cups were left as its; - Because of the above cockroaches were moving into the room and even after drawing attention to the Manager and housekeeping staff, things remained unchanged and we continue to find cockroaches till our last day we check out, this freaked us out; - We do understand that there is a limited breakfast, but not expected that we get 4 small cubes of pawpaw, ¼ slice of passion fruit, and 4 cubes of banana for 2 people to share; - Bread toast was optional and need to ask when we order an omelette; - For starters for A$ 19 for salt & pepper calamari, we get 5 small rings of 50cents size; - I do understand that BBR want to cut the corners and cost but not after charging full price; - The whole island charges credit card surcharges between 1 % to 3% but BBR continue to charge 4.5%; - Finally, we found 3 items on our invoice that do not belong to us, which were politely removed without any arguments when we draw BBR attention. This shortcoming will always linger in our minds when we try to remember our Silver anniversary. We hope this review will bring attention of the Management.

The resort was really beautiful and relaxing, perfect for our couple's holidays. The staff was very professional and helping. Rob and his wife, the lovely owners, were also available throughout our stay to make sure everything goes perfectly.

A premium resort that will appeal to those looking for a tranquil getaway . Located 15 minutes from the airport and similar distance from the town of Luganville, the resort offers high quality accommodation with friendly and attentive staff. Rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. Unpredictable water pressure and heating can make the shower experience variable but perfectly acceptable in this more remote area of the island. The restaurant serves good quality meals and the breakfast omelette is worth ordering in the morning. Whilst the resort is isolated with free neighbours little else to see and do apart from enjoy the lovely sandy beach and water, there are plenty of tours on offer as well as a day spa on the premises which offers a splendid massage.

Amazing location, incredible food and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our entire stay. Just a short flight from Port Villa to the island of Espiritu Santo where a shuttle from the resort will pick you up and take you to the lush resort. Highly recommend staying at Barrier Beach resort. We stayed in a beachfront Fare and never wanted to leave. Our flights were cancelled after we had checked out and Rob the resort manager was only to happy to accommodate us once again until we could get home. The kitchen, wait and bar staff are just delightful and the reception staff will organise a driver ( ours was John and such a great guide too) and any tours that you may wish to do. The water was crystal clear and like a warm bath. All beautiful, natural attractions are close by, highly recommend visiting the local village and school to absorb the beautiful culture and kindness of the local people in Santo. A horse ride is a must too with Megan at Santo Horse Adventures. Barrier beach resort helped us fall in love with Vanuatu and the local people there, we will be back again soon, till next time. Ale or Au revoir Jen and John Noosa, Australia

This place is amazing! The owners Calvin and Julie are so warm, welcoming and accommodating. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional. I cannot speak more highly of them or thank them enough for our wonderful time there. The water is deliciously warm and the views are stunning. You can help yourself to paddle boards, snorkelling and kayaking right from your doorstep. There are plenty of fish, turtles and even dugongs! If there are other things on the island that you wish to do or see the staff are really helpful and can hook that up for you. The food was also amazing, we tried nearly everything on the menu and it was all cooked really well. We would usually have some pre-dinner happy hour cocktails and catch up and chat with the other guests and talk about each other’s experiences. Thank you again Calvin, Julie and the staff from Barrier Beach Resort!
