We
booked
four
nights
at
the
expensive
Barrier
Beach
Resort.
It
was
our
second
visit
to
the
property,
having
previously
stayed
at
it
in
2014
under
different
owners
when
it
was
called
Moyyan
By
The
Sea.
The
room
we
booked,
a
beachfront
fare,
has
aged
but
otherwise
hasn’t
really
changed
much
in
the
ensuing
decade.
The
king
sized
bed
is
soft
but
acceptable,
the
pillows
flat
bricks
that
need
updating.
The
gardens
have
grown
in
further
including
beautiful
staghorns
that
make
the
place
feels
lush
and
green.
On
this
occasion,
Air
Vanuatu
cancelled
our
booked
flights
(for
the
second
time
this
holiday)
shifting
our
arrival
from
Friday
to
Sunday.
The
resort
refused
to
move
our
booking
back
two
days
citing
being
full,
or
refund
us
the
nights
that
we
could
not
use
through
no
fault
of
our
own.
The
Australian
manager,
Wayne,
explained
to
my
husband
in
the
middle
of
the
mostly
full
restaurant
at
dinner,
that
while
he
did
have
the
discretion
to
do
so,
he
wasn’t
going
to.
This
didn’t
make
me
feel
like
a
valued
guest,
so
I
left
before
our
dessert
arrived.
By
contrast
the
resort
we
stayed
in
on
Tanna
(who
we
couldn’t
get
to
for
FOUR
of
our
booked
nights
due
to
Air
Vanuatu
cancelling
flights,
then
rearranging
our
outgoing
flights
yet
again),
bent
over
backwards
to
help,
changing
our
booking
dates
and
deducting
the
food
and
beverage
costs
relating
to
consumption
while
we
were
there
from
what
ended
up
being
two
nights
we
had
paid
for
but
couldn’t
use.
While
I
recognise
Air
Vanuatu
is
the
primary
cause
of
these
problems,
I
didn’t
walk
away
feeling
good
from
Barrier
Beach
Resort.
I
would
have
if
Wayne
had
offered
to
meet
us
half
way.
Sabine
however
was
understanding
and
helpful,
finding
us
email
addresses
for
people
at
Air
Vanuatu
to
see
if
we
can
finally
get
a
reply
that
might
assist
us
to
recoup
some
of
our
lost
monies
on
this
trip
via
travel
insurance.
While
the
beach
is
pretty,
the
coral
is
not
healthy
or
abundant,
and
the
water
was
very
cloudy
on
both
days
we
actually
stayed
meaning
visibility
was
limited.
However
I
did
get
to
see
two
stingrays,
and
a
good
20
or
so
clownfish.
At
breakfast
it
pays
to
take
a
mental
map
of
where
the
bommies
are
(dark
patches)
to
minimise
swimming
kilometres
over
empty
sand.
The
restaurant
is
acceptable
without
being
great.
There’s
a
decent
list
of
cocktails
if
you
like
fruity
tropical
concoctions.
The
wine
list
is
pedestrian.
The
menu
mainstays
are
poulet
and
Santo
beef.
I
tried
them
across
a
lightly
flavoured
ceviche,
plump
fishcakes,
creamy
surf
(prawns,
fish
and
calamari)
and
turf,
seared
poulet
with
lime
butter,
mash
and
veg.,
and
two
curries:
madras
Santo
beef
curry
and
poulet
coconut
curry,
that
we
requested
as
spicy
but
received
as
mild.
Bear
in
mind
when
booking
here
that
it
costs
1500VT
(each
way)
to
get
to
town
in
a
taxi
if
you
want
to
eat
anywhere
else.
Oddly,
bacon
is
priced
as
an
add-on
(450VT)
to
the
hot
breakfast
included
in
your
AUD
500+
room
rate.
That
seems
a
bit,
I
don’t
know,
cheap?
Tropical
fruit
only
arrives
if
you
know
to
ask
directly
for
it,
ditto
toast
with
your
omelette.
Scrambled
eggs
arrive
as
pale
yellow
rubble,
so
choose
fried
and
you’ll
receive
two
fried
eggs,
two
triangles
of
toast
and
a
bit
of
butter
in
a
dish.
Shame
when
the
island
tomatoes
are
so
vibrant
not
to
dress
up
the
plate
with
something.
Barrier
Beach
Resort
also
tack
on
a
4.5%
charge
if
you
pay
using
a
credit
card
while
the
rest
of
Vanuatu
charges
3%.
The
expansion
of
the
resort
(which
is
really
the
joining
of
two
neighbouring
resorts)
has
also
seen
the
introduction
more
rules.
For
example,
a
sign
in
the
bathroom
says
you
can’t
use
the
white
bath
towels
if
you’re
wearing
makeup
or
suntan
oil.
You
are
also
informed
you
can’t
use
the
beach
towels
off
the
property.
You’re
not
able
to
consume
duty
free
alcohol
on
the
beach
in
front
of
your
fare
on
the
sun
lounges
they
put
there
for
you
to
relax
in.
At
the
price
point
I
expected
to
be
gently
shepherded.
Maybe
investor
returns
have
become
more
important
than
the
Melanesian
charm
that
drew
us
back
to
Santo
in
the
first
place.
