It has been said here is the tomb of first king of Seljuk dynasty " Tughrul Beg". This tower has been built from "Sarooj" material that is combination of wool of goat, clay, lime, stone powder and glair. This combination is very tough against water and is hard as concrete. The tower shape is polygon with 24 angles that each angle shows an hour. With some method the minutes should be measured and show by the sun and shadow on the wall as well. Very nice geometry.

Tughrul Tower is located in the eastern side of Ibn Babuyeh Tomb in the city of Rey in Tehran. The tower has remained from Seljuk era, the tomb of Seljuk ruler, Tuğrul Beg, founder of Seljuk dynasty. This place is called Caliphate Yazid Tower in some scripts. The tower is about 20 meters high (regardless of the conoid dome, not much of which is remaining today). According to some experts, this tower is like the arms of a clock and the time can be detected by the sun shining on its jags.

There are different speculation about the function of such towers in Iran: 1. Monumental tomb 2. Sundial 3. Beacon or watchtower, etc. It might even be a combination of these functions. Whatever it is I'm personally drawn to these minimal, geometric structures.

Bit of a hidden gem for tourists in Iran. Such a beautiful place with an amazing garden full of loud birds and the man who works here/caretaker? Is the kindest most genuine guy.

It is a fascinating place to visit near Tehran. The application of the building is not clear. The guide of the building is a very very nice person who knows everything about the possible applications and intentions for the structure. So,ask him to explain the details. It is near Ibn Babawayh Cemetery in where many famous people in contemporary history of Iran have been buried.

This is a tower built in the name of turkish king Tughrul Begk who was one of most important king od seljucks. The tower is also used as a sun watch and rasathane. you can start counting its outside corners by finding first sun shadow. There is also a good acoustic in the middle of tower that i loved testing 🙂 Beside this the watchman of the tower work there for more than 15 years and he is really friendly. the tower can be easly reach on food from shahr e rey train station. From central tehran to shahr e rey atation ia only 30 min metro ride.
