Since it's used as a religious school it's very hard to visit. Unfortunately not easy to find visiting times. But if you manage to get in it's a must see mosque in Tehran.

Shahid Motahari University, also known as Shahid Motahari High School, Sepehsalar School and Naseri School, is one of Iran's higher education institutions in Tehran. This building with traditional Iranian architecture was started in 1296 AH by Mirza Hossein Khan Sepahsalar based on the institution of Waqf and was completed in 1303 AH (1261 AH).

The construction project of the mosque was started in 1879 upon the order of Mirza Hosein Sepahsalar, the Premiers of Iran during Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, and the first phase of construction was finished after five years since it was started. The mosque was renamed the Shahid Motahhari (مسجد شهید مطهری), after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, but it is commonly known as its initial name of Sepahsalar Mosque. The Sepahsalar Mosque is one of the largest Mosque in Tehran. During the late Qajar as well as Pahlavi era, Sepahsalar mosque was distinctive landmark of Tehran with its eight minarets which was unique in Persian design of mosques. Tiles with full-blown floral motifs in typically flamboyant Qajar style decorate the courtyard, while a tile inscription band gives details of the original endowment. The prayer hall dome, 37m in height, is supported by 44 columns.

Beautiful mosque with impressive artwork, but it seems to be hard to enter, since it is home to a religious school. I profited from the foreigner bonus and could still get a glance of its yard. Entering one of the buildings of the huge complex was impossible however.

Sepahsalar Mosque, which was known as Motahhari Mosque after the Revolution, is located on the southeastern side of Baharestan Square. Next to this mosque, there is a high school. This is one of the most magnificent religious buildings in Iran. The surrounding streets are very crowded, however, it is a historic structure and a magnificent building. As we walked through the night and passed by, we came across extraordinary lighting. It is very magnificent here at night with good lighting. It is a wonderful building and its history is very much explained in Wikipedia. I do not know exactly what it is like to visit here, however, this is one of the places that has completed the complex of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran on the southwest side. These photos are a series of photos from the night that I took while passing by this huge building.

It doesn't have that much visual appeal, it's just historical and many historical events have taken place there

Sepahsalar Mosque - The building of the main building of the school was started during the era of Naseruddin Shah Qajar in 1296 AH (1257 AD) on the recommendation of Haji Pirzadeh Naini, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and War at the time, Mirza Hossein Khan Sepahsalar Qazvini (who also had a history of being the Prime Minister). And after his death, his brother Mirza Yahya Khan Moshir al-Dole completed its construction. After the Chaharbagh School of Isfahan, Sepehsalar School and Mosque is one of the largest and most magnificent religious buildings in Iran. Sepehsalar started the foundation of this building in 1258 (Khorshidi) and since he died in Mashhad in 1260, his brother Yahya Khan Mushir al-Doleh took the effort to complete this building. After his death, a part of the unfinished works and decorations were gradually done by the vice-prefects of the time. The construction of the main core of the building took nearly five years. The design of the mosque was carried out by engineer Mahdi Khan Mumthan al-Dawlah Shaghaghi, and its architect was Hasan Memar Qomi. Also, Haj Abul Hasan Memar and Jafar Khan Memar Bashi Kashani were the main architects. A mosque and a school are mentioned.

It is interesting to know that Hejir, the then prime minister of Iran during the Pahlavi era, was assassinated in this mosque.
