Very interesting tour under the Vatican to see the site of St Peter's tomb. Book in advance making sure you use the official site, pass through some security screens to the Ufficio Scavi. The tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable - tours available in multiple languages and take around one hour or so. During COVID it's necessary to have a vaccination Green Pass. We also had to wear FFP2/N95 masks and they provided plastic gloves to wear. It's hot and humid even in winter. There are various stairs and uneven surfaces so not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues. Photos not allowed anywhere inside. Worth a visit whether you are religious or not. Tour ends in the Basilica so you can see that at the end if you want.

In front of the Statue of Saint Longinus by Bernini in Saint Peter's Basilica, to our right as we look at the Altar, there is a descending staircase that leads under the Basilica, to the Grotte Vaticane. From there we can see the Tomb of Saint Peter which is under the Altar and protected behind glass. Also, there are the tombs of various Popes, among them the most recent interment, that of Pope Benedict XVI, on 5 January 2023. On the floor of the Basilica are the golden air vents for the crypt. Although photos are not allowed there, I couldn't resist and snapped a few in a hurry, and that too without quality. I have repeatedly submitted a request to Google Maps to add the place to the maps but it does not approve. This is not the Vatican Necropolis that is marked on the map inside the Basilica, although some have mistakenly uploaded photos from the Grotte Vaticane there, as I eventually did.

Beautiful painting, probably not worth the lines. My father really wanted to go to the Vatican due to it's religious history. We didn't have any kind of scheduled tour or reservation. The line was wrapped halfway around the entire Vatican which needless to say was thousands and thousands of people and was going to take four or five hours to get in! We ended up going a few blocks down the street and paid for a guided tour which got us up to the front of the line only waiting maybe 30 minutes. The crowds are really bad. Watch your pockets as the Vatican has more crime (pick pockets) per capita than any other city on the planet. This was one of the tidbits of information I learned on the tour.

The Christmas decorations were so beautiful. We were lucky to be there during the season and that year (2019).

(Translated by Google) You can get to the Necropolis under the cathedral (not to be confused with the crypt where the popes are buried). They conduct tours, the number of people is limited (up to 12 per group, up to 150-200 per day). Conducted in an old cemetery from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Many really well-preserved places, mosaics, bas-reliefs, a very atmospheric place. Excavations were carried out only in the middle of the last century, now they maintain a special microclimate (warm and humid) to keep everything intact. In fact, a small "city" under the Cathedral of St. Peter. At the end, they show the grave of St. Peter and presumably his bones. After the tour, you exit immediately to the cathedral, in this way you can get there without waiting in line. You can book an excursion either by e-mail in advance or in person at the Uficio Scavi office (we got it day in and day out, the price is 13 euros per person). How to find an office: you need to get to the end of the left colonnade, which is closer to the cathedral, there will be a small security control (the basis for entering the cathedral is in the right colonnade). Next you need to get to the street Boarder path (starts from the outside of the colonnade), there are Vatican guards. You need to report that you are going to Uficio Scavi, they will let you through. The office is further down the road. A very unusual and interesting excursion, contrasts well with the main tourist attractions.

The Vatican Necropolis was a great insight into the old city of Rome under the Vatican. What interested us was the tomb they believe St Peter was buried. A true pilgrimage site, where we saw the jaw of St Peter. It was interesting to see how Roman tombs were repurposed to Christian tombs. Photos were strictly forbidden, and the group was no bigger than 10 people The actual booking had to be done through the Vatican directly, as they ask you what days you can do the tour during your visit. .

Vatican city....first of all you are in tha smallest country of the world. St. Peter's Basilica cathedral....wow whan an beautiful architecture. After getting out of metro or bus in the way to church you encounters with number of guide n all who will tell there is a huge line and it take 3-4 hrs to get in the church.....believe me it takes maximum 25 - 30 mins to get in the church doesnt matter how big is the line it will move very fast thanks to quick security check. Church is free of cost....and you see marvolous paintings, majestic statues in side church. To go on top of the church you have to pay 8 euros. And there is huge no. Of steps and very small space to walk in side tomb. Near by many mueseum to visit....and of course famous square outside the church. Really enjoyed

We toured the Vatican Necropolis; which allows access to archeological ruins, graves and the final resting places of past Popes - all that lie underneath what is now St Peter’s Basillica. The highlight was seeing the actual burial site of Saint Peter, the disciple. Very interesting. But you need to book quite some months ahead.

The spiritual and literal home of the Catholic church which is well worth visiting for the mad architecture alone. I didn’t see the Pope though. Best visited during the pandemic to avoid the large crowds and queues!

The Vatican Necropolis is not the same as some of these reviews are commenting. The Necropolis is part of a very small tour that only accepts 250 people a day that must be registered pretty far in advance in my experience. However, it is absolutely INCREDIBLE. The entire Vatican is built on a pagan city of the dead that has temples, houses, and streets beneath it. You will see amazing history hidden for millennia by the imposing structure above. The extra bonus is that you SKIP ALL LINES and get to see the bones that the church believes belong to Saint Peter the verse “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church” is QUITE LITERAL. Not good for those who are claustrophobic! It isn’t accommodating to people with mobility impairments. Final note: it’s humid and warm, bring a water bottle. You will need it!

Amazing cathedral. It’s a special feeling when you are walking through. A lot of afford went in to make it so magnificent. Definitely worth to see it and experience the atmosphere inside. First time was there when did not have to go through all these security checks. It is a bit annoying queueing before entry. But I guess this is not avoidable now. The secret is to go there close to the end of the day. Much less people and smaller queue.

Pretty cool little spot that most people miss. I’m glad a local told me about it. It’s small but has multiple levels with a lot of history inside. Not expensive either. Worth checking it out if you’re in the area

Simple Amazing. I am not one for Religion or do I even follow one but I must say the whole experience of visiting this stunning place was a tick off the bucket list. From the whole architecture of the building to the paintings and sculptures inside was breath taking. I could not find a single thing wrong with my experience here. We must of come at a quiter time as I've heard it can get very busy but it wasn't at time. As the the heavens aligned and allowed me to see it in its entirety. I would recommend anyone no matter what you beliefs are to visit this wonder. 10/10. I wasn't able to see it all as it deserves a day to view the whole place so I will be visiting again and seeing the things I missed out. Pure and simple.....astonishing!!!

A very special place with a fascinating history. Outside off the beaten tourist paths. But don't think it's cold 12 meters under the ground! It is very humid and warm to preserve the original conditions (according to the archeologist). With outside 33 degrees it had approximately the same here, better bring something to drink.

(Translated by Google) 5/5. Definitely one of the highlights of Rome. During a tour lasting approximately 1.5 hours, various Roman tombs from the 1st and 2nd centuries (including beautiful mosaics) will be shown, after which the grave and bones of Peter will also be designated. The guide clearly spoke English, and was very well informed so it was a fascinating tour. The tour ends in St. Peter's so that you don't have to queue again if you want to visit it afterwards. Photo taken from the Scavi Office; Unfortunately, no photos may be taken indoors. (Original) 5/5.

This is the ancient necropolis in which saint Peter was buried. It seems that a Greek inscription on a wall bears witness to the authenticity of the tradition. The only way to visit the necropolis is to make a call months in advance: due to the nature of the site, they allow only 300 people every day.

On your next visit, plan ahead and book a tour of the Necropolis San Pietro. You will travel back in time to the 2nd century AD and walk in the original structures/chambers of the church. You will also see where St Peter was buried, the graffiti wall and many other wonders. Pictures are not allowed hence not able to share any but definitely worth a visit.

Very interesting place not many people know. Write to Ufficio Scavi to get the official tickets and a guide in your language. Under 15-year-olds are not allowed and it's a bit claustrophobic down there, but nothing beats walking the same paths as they used to in the 2nd century AD.

Amazing tour! My partner and I recently experienced a great tour of the necropolis. Alessia, our guide, was knowledgeable, funny, and overall great. We asked Alessia is she accepted tips and she does, so please show your appreciation! She was very grateful and the others in our tour group did the same once they saw this. :-) The tour ends in the Vatican grottoes and this leads directly up to St. Peter's. This saves an incredible amount of time! We will definitely do this tour again someday.

(Translated by Google) It's different from vatican grottoes that you can go down from St. Basil's Cathedral. You can only enter the guided tour through the Ufficio Scavi, which can be booked in advance or visited (if you are lucky) You can enter the Vatican City, not the square, through the entrance to the Hotel Paul VI and enter the Peter's entrance on Google Maps (passed through the metal detector). Inside, there's a city of Constantine and Peter's tomb. The tour lasted about an hour and a half. Temperature and humidity are very different from the outside, so be especially careful in winter After finishing the tour, you will come to St. Peter's Cathedral.

(Translated by Google) Among the many wonders that can be visited in St. Peter's Basilica, there are the VATICAN CAVES where, in addition to various archaeological finds from the old Basilica, there are the suggestive Tombs of the Popes, which are of considerable importance for their religious and artistic value. The environment of the caves refer to the old Constantinian Basilica (used from the 4th to the 16th century) and are located about three meters below the level of the current Basilica and their current arrangement took place over several centuries and now appear with the various Chapels and niches. The so-called Tomb of the most important of the Apostles, the first Pope, that is St. Peter, stands out both in size and in importance. The remains were found during the excavations of the 1940s and subsequently with the searches in the 1950s, they were found near a "red wall" (known since ancient times as a place near which was the burial of St. Peter) of the bones of a man about 1.65 meters tall and about 60-70 years old wrapped in a precious red fabric decorated with threads gold and an inscription in Greek was also found indicating "Peter is here". The mosaic of Christ, which we see in the background, is off-center and corresponds to the tomb while on the right there was the wall called graffiti with the inscriptions left by the first Christians. For this the Constantinian Basilica was built in that place. In the caves there are also very important artistic works such as the majestic marble statue of Pius VI (Braschi family), over two meters high, represented while praying, who died a prisoner of the French, made by the great sculptor Antonio Canova. But the most important works are the various tombs of the Popes, currently there are twenty-two: 01. Peter 02. Pope John VII (86th Pope - 705-707) 03. Pope Adrian IV (169th Pope 1154-1159) 04. Pope Gregory V (138th Pope 996-999 - 1st German Pope) 05. Pope Nicholas III (188th Pope 1277-1280) 06. Pope Boniface VIII (193rd Pope 1294-1303) 07. Pope Urban VI (died in 1389 a sarcophagus from III AD was used instead) (202 ° Pope 1378-1389) 08. Pope Innocent VII (204th Pope 1404-1406) 09. Pope Niccolò V (208th Pope 1447-1455) 10. Pope Callixtus III (209th Pope 1455-1458) 11. Pope Paul II (211th Pope 1464-1471) 12. Pope Pius III (215th Pope 1503-1503 only 26 days) 13. Pope Julius III (221st Pope 1550-1555) 14. Pope Marcellus II (222 ° Pope 1555-1555 only 22 days - he kept his proper name was called Marcello Cervini) 15. Pope Innocent IX (230th Pope 1590-1591) 16. Pope Innocent XIII (244th Pope 1721-1724) 17. Pope Pius VI (250th Pope 1775-1799) 18. Pope Benedict XV (258th Pope 1914-1922) 19. Pope Pius XI (259th Pope 1922-1939) 20. Pope Pius XII (260th Pope 1939-1958) 21. Pope Paul VI (262th Pope 1963 -1978) 22. Pope John Paul I (263rd Pope 1978-1978 His pontificate lasted only 33 days) Some kings who proved to be very devoted to the Catholic Church are also buried in the caves, such as: • Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) • Queen Charlotte I of Cyprus (1436-1485) • King James Francesco Eduardo Stuart (1688-1766) and his sons. Once in the caves there were also the tombs of: • Pope John XXIII (Altar of San Girolamo) (261st Pope 1958-1963) • Pope John Paul II (Chapel of San Sebastiano) (264th Pope 1978-2005) Once they became Saints, they were transferred to the Basilica, in special Chapels, in order to make it easier for the many faithful to visit. Among the various finds present in the 4th century Constantinian Basilica, we can point out: • The base of a column belonging to the minor naves. • Remains of the North Perimeter Wall.

The paths are the course of the terrain at that time, which has since then been increased further and further by embankments. Because of Corona, our tour only had 4 participants. 28. It is certain that when the penny jingles into the money-box, gain and avarice can be increased, but the result of the intercession of the Church is in the power of God alone. 29. Who knows whether all the souls in purgatory wish to be bought out of it, as in the legend of Sts. Severinus and Paschal. 30. No one is sure that his own contrition is sincere; much less that he has attained full remission. 31. Rare as is the man that is truly penitent, so rare is also the man who truly buys indulgences, i.e., such men are most rare. 32. They will be condemned eternally, together with their teachers, who believe themselves sure of their salvation because they have letters of pardon. 33. Men must be on their guard against those who say that the pope's pardons are that inestimable gift of God by which man is reconciled to Him; 34. For these "graces of pardon" concern only the penalties of sacramental satisfaction, and these are appointed by man. 35. They preach no Christian doctrine who teach that contrition is not necessary in those who intend to buy souls out of purgatory or to buy confessionalia. 36. Every truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without letters of pardon. 37. Every true Christian, whether living or dead, has part in all the blessings of Christ and the Church; and this is granted him by God, even without letters of pardon. 38. Nevertheless, the remission and participation [in the blessings of the Church] which are granted by the pope are in no way to be despised, for they are, as I have said, the declaration of divine remission

Unique way to visit and see areas of the vatican that you will not be able to see from the normal "public" access to the basilica above. Guide is very knowledgeable and you need to book couple of months in advance of your trip. Highly recommend it as it is very inexpensive but also very , very unique.

(Translated by Google) I liked it :) But I don't think it can be for everyone. The guide was a cool guy, he said it quite clearly in English. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours. These are the dungeons where you can see what the present Basilica stands on. But it's more of a foundation, burial crypt (but not one where you can go to the pope's burial), various "rocks", niches, and so on. But there you can see the place where the first so-called Pope Saint Peter himself was buried. There is a beautiful chapel there. After the whole tour, you can immediately enter the burial grounds of the popes and the current Basilica itself (no need to wait in line). And small groups (18 of us) are admitted to this place of visit, because space is not big there, plus the humidity and temperature are maintained accordingly. So inside there was a rather wet halibut, which had such a "lack" :). All you have to do is get permission to come - be on that designated day and hour. (Original) Man patiko :) Bet manau ne visiem taip gali būti.

This is one of the best visits of the Basilica. Groups are small, and booking is essential. Our guide, Katie, was knowledgable and interesting. The story of the Roman Necropolis and the excavation of the tomb of St Peter was fascinating.

An abysmally marked, staffed, and directed opportunity. Showed up for the tour on time but was unable to find the group so missed the tour. Vatican museum staff were unable to assist at all and had the gall to try and charge an extra 40 euro to visit the museum. Signage is basically nonexistent so make sure to verify ahead of time. Probably a good tour but who knows? The website to buy the tickets is criminally bad for a spot so popular. Please do better.
