THIEVES. When you enter in the museum you have to let your bags with the receptionnist so that you don't "steal anything". Finally you go out and check your things and your money and the receptionist has stolen 110 euros. She gets scared and gives you the money back trying to tell you a story. Poor thief you lie badly and you disgust the tourists.

This museum opened in 1964 and is housed in the house of José Gómez Mena, a mansion designed by the French architects P. Virad and M. Destugué in 1927. Gómez’s sister, María Luisa Gómez Mena, a wealthy patron of Cuban artists, was a vital figure in the Havana of her time. At the sumptuous residence she hosted parties and gatherings which were attended by celebrities from Cuba and other parts of the world, from aristocrats to movie stars, to intellectuals, to politicians.

Essential for understanding the lives of rich Cubans before the revolution. Additionally, some of the objects presented - magnificent Chinese screens, Marie Antoinette's writing desk - are extraordinary in their own right. Our guide was Mario, a young university lecturer who speaks good English and was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It would be worth enquiring which days he works.

It's one of the well organized museums in Havana; and the furniture is varied from different cultures & countries. It's rather small though and over-hyped for some reason by all the tourism sites & blogs out-there. It's still a nice place to visit. I found the interior of the mansion more interesting than the artifacts though.

I really enjoyed touring this mansion and getting a glimpse of the Havana of the past- in great contrast to a lot of the buildings in ruin. Some great artifacts, but the property itself is worth the visit.
