On
the
beautiful
promenade
and
next
to
the
public
beach,
is
this
little
but
interesting
and
unique
church.
The
position
of
the
church
is
very
impressive.
It
seems
that
it
is
drawn
between
the
beach
and
the
sea,
with
an
imposing
cliff
that
protects
it
from
storms.
We
have
visited
it
many
times
and
each
time
it
delights
us
with
its
uniqueness
and
beautiful
energy.
The
sanctuary
of
the
Madonna
dell'Angelo
is
dedicated
to
the
Madonna
and
to
St.
Michael
the
archangel,
which
proudly
stands
on
the
shore
of
the
Adriatic
Sea,
founded
around
the
ninth
century
and
rebuilt
in
its
current
form
in
1751.
Bishop
Pietro
Rusca,
in
his
report
to
the
Holy
See
from
1664,
states
that
this
church
is
older
than
the
cathedral
itself.
The
first
construction
of
the
church
of
the
Angel
is
to
be
attributed
to
the
first
transmigrations
of
the
Concordians
towards
the
coastal
territories,
following
the
barbarian
invasions
of
the
inland
territories.
This
makes
the
sanctuary
the
first
religious
building
constructed
in
the
city
founded
by
the
Romans,
according
to
a
statement
from
Giovanni
Musolino
(historical).
This
first
sacred
building
was
dedicated
to
the
Archangel
San
Michele,
recognized
as
the
protector
of
the
city,
as
can
be
read
in
the
tombstones
affixed
to
today's
sanctuary
and
in
numerous
documents
from
the
pastoral
visits
of
the
bishops.
Popular
tradition,
told
by
Musolino,
has
it
that
in
ancient
times
some
fishermen
found
the
simulacrum
of
the
Holy
Virgin
miraculously
floating
on
the
sea
on
a
block
of
marble.
Once
the
statue
was
brought
ashore
with
their
fishing
nets,
the
citizens
gathered
in
the
nearby
port
of
the
Angel,
and
decided
to
place
a
statue
of
the
Holy
Virgin
in
this
church.
From
there
she
got
the
name
Madonna
dell'Angelo.
