Great experience on the Fri-Sun and Wednesdays that the market is open for. Worthwhile getting in early and taking your time coming down all the aisles. Plenty of amazing prepared food ready to go and lots of fresh fruit, veg, butchers and fish mongers to try out. Some great oyster bars and sashimi bars to get your hands on super fresh seafood. So much delicious food, you'll need to be rolled out of there!

A lovely area to shop. Naturally great to get the fresh and good qualities of groceries. Plus there are many lovely bistros, cafes, bakeries etc. inside and outside of the market, so I could enjoy the nice drinks and dishes as well while I'm shopping. And various kinds of shops are located near the market, it's quite covenient and fun.

I enjoyed this market a lot more. Especially I love the oyster bar where I found a great bargain again with oyster, lobster and prawn. The market closed at 4pm and you can find the real bargain when come close to 4pm. Small market to buy groceries including daily wine. Found a seafood restaurant and enjoy the meal there too!

In every country there's bound to be a market and eatery crowd and tourist magnet. In Melbourne CBD, this is one of a handful of them that's worth a visit. Don't be daunted by the crowd. Walk around and savour the smell of whatever is cooking or buy whatever produce that's in season. Good accessibility with public transport nearby. Dine in the food hall or alfresco.

Personally the best market in Melbourne. Always lots of fun and plenty of cheap eats on offer. The highlights for me would be the South Melbourne market Dim Sims, the oyster bars & the bakeries which sell everything at half price at 3pm! Parking can be a pain but that’s probably the only complaint here. On a sunny day, it’s hard to pick a better place then here.

Great market to go to especially during the weekend. Alternative option to Victoria Market. Opening hours 8am-4pm Fri-Sun and Wed. Rooftop car parking first 2 hours free on wed, fri or before 10am on weekend. Otherwise, $2/hour. Plenty of parking on the side roads too but they are full pretty quickly. Many shops for food, groceries especially fresh fruits, veggies and seafoods. Plenty of cafeterias or dessert places. Mama Tran dumpling here is great too. Highly recommend their crystal prawn dumpling. Best I have ever eaten. There is a food hall in the market too but the food is just so so.

I prefer the Victoria Farmers market. This one was a bit too small and seemed overly focused on goods instead of foods and agricultural products. I like it because you can find and support the entrepreneurs and small business owners but the main food market was like a grocery store and then the other food sales and some small goods shops and restaurants weren't accessible from the inside, you had to circle the building to get to them. The mall section and a seafood restaurant and coffee shop they had were really nice. I'd say stick with Victoria Farmers Market if trying to decide. But both are better than only supporting Coles and Woolworths.

Love the vibe here. Easy access via tram (for tourist). You can get really good foods like seafood, pastries, coffee here! As their closing time is 4pm, the foods in most of the popular food store might sold out around 3 or 3:30. So be there earlier 😄

I usually go to the Vic Market but I've started trekking across the city on the 96 tram. Some really good produce and definitely better food places than the Vic Market. The best range of oysters I've seen in Melbs. Friendly and relatively compact. The surrounding commercial area is pretty great

somehow oyster and other seafood are way better than Queen Victoria Market. Freshly opened oysters are miles better. Did not take a picture but the ‘Best Lobster roll‘ outside the market is really good.

Absolutely worth a visit, especially the food hall, where you can find some top quality produce, including organic meats and an oyster bar. Incredible pies and tarts. Then have a coffee at Padre. And don't forget to try the famous Sth Melbourne dim sims, located outside on the street amongst the street cafes. There were so many good things, just GO!!

So much choice and such high quality. If not the best markets in Australia, I’d love to know what is. The food was fresh, the smell was fantastic, the service first class. Am absolute must for anyone coming to Melbourne. As a bonus there is a pamphlet with information for a short tour of the surrounding block that was well worth the time.

South Melbourne market is the best place to go to on a Sunday afternoon! I usually visit the coffee place first inside the market, pick up some hot croissants then stroll down to grab some fresh oyster and fish. Then on the way out pick up some homemade lasagne to bring home for dinner. 😁

Love this market , handy carpark on top, great food, coffee, quality meat and veggies etc, nice atmosphere, clean restrooms. The only negative is all the roundabouts on the corners around the market, car drivers at times impatient and speeding. Can’t wait for lockdown to end and the market to fully open again.

One of the more enjoyable market in Melbourne. Although it is much smaller than QV Market, the atmosphere is livelier. Music, coffee, fruits, seafood, nuts etc etc. Come here on empty stomach as one definitely will succumb to the alluring temptations of the food choices.

A Grid planned Marketplace for a nice day out, have a meal or buy stuff you need, the place got it all. Please do visit the awesome stores like Rita's Coffee and Nuts, Gewurzhaus a specialty grocery shop for all your needs. I would suggest visiting the information kiosk and getting a map for better navigating the beautiful market.

Oysters oysters oysters galore! So many different small seafood places. You can't go wrong with any of them they all look amazing. Oysters were around $2 each or $20 for a dozen. Found uni at one of the little seafood places too which my partner really enjoyed. Market is jam-packed with all kinds of various food stands and little shops. It's a fun time.

A very enjoyable market with a wide variety of unique and niche shops (for example, a shop offering printed poster of your scanned iris). There is an excellent choice of food (a highly popular croissant shop) not just in the market but at the external perimeter of the market as well. The roasted nuts shop is amazing. The freshly roasted honey coated macadamia large pack is $24 while the honey roasted cashews large pack is $18 and they are both extremely fragrant. Fresh vegetables, fruits, meat and seafood are also available (there's a shop selling lots of fresh seafood including lobsters, Queensland XL tiger prawns, local scallops and many options of fresh fish.

A must visit if you're visiting Melbourne. We went early in the morning for breakfast and to avoid the crowd. We came for the borek and it didn't disappoint. This market offers a very good selection of bakery, delicatessen and it's a seafood lovers paradise. Seafood are fresh and very reasonable priced. The stores sells very unique and beautiful products, just wish I can buy them all for my home. 🏡

If there’s one thing to love about Victoria, it’s its markets. (However, there are a million things to love about Victoria so don’t worry you won’t be running out of options on the menu.) The market is a living organism with all the positive vibes and love the in the atmosphere. Just take a walk on a Saturday or Sunday around the shops in the market and feel the beautiful energy here. It’ll fill you up for the week! Also the fresh seafood shops are a sensation and always crowded.

What I like about this place is their seafood, oysters! Amazingly fresh, I tried the XL Smokey Bay Oysters without any seasoning, just some lemon juice, and it was simply heavenly. There are many types of seafood and the place well organised and walkway as wide enough. The only limitation is that there aren't enough tables for eating. We have a good time here and the taste of the oyster shall be a sweet memory of South Melbourne Market for a long time !

Have lived in Melbourne for 10 years now and have only recently been to the market during the day. There are so many shops to look at from fruit and veg, shopping, bakeries and eateries, florists and more. Sunday is bustling with people, anything with a long line you know will be good. Affordable prices for flowers and organic fruit & veg but shop around. Found the fruit & veg stores had a range or different prices. Parking a bit further and walking to the market is your best bet. There’s so many people and cars, it’s easier to get street parking close by. Take public transport, the tram stop is also close by

This market is so popular... It's my first time here, and I'm not familiar with the flow of customers. During the peak hours, there were way too many people, and I could barely move. Almost every restaurant had long lines. Thankfully, while there were queues, the efficiency was good, so I didn't have to wait forever...

Quite a nice market to visit. If I compared Victoria Market to South Melbourne market, I'd say this is more 'local' and less touristy. Nice food options to try. Crowds seem to 'lemming' the fresh cooked lobster, snow crab and oysters in the seafood section. Prices seem ok but do compare. Getting there is a bit of a pain by car because it's affected by rush hour. But ample free parking at the market itself means not having to park and hike unlike Queen Vic. Worth a visit for a tourist if free for food and shopping

I love markets but this one is too overcrowded to enjoy. The food court is pretty basic. There are some really cute and creative stores but if you’re going on a weekend try to reschedule to a weekday so you can enjoy the market. The vegetable stores are pretty great for a deal but just such a hassle when you have no personal space to move or carry your groceries.

Good if you get in early but generally disgustingly overpriced, especially for a 'market'

A really nice market just a little outside the city, easily accessible by the tram. A good mix of fresh produce, clothes, snacks etc. The cafes and food stalls there were great as well!

Lots to see and eat. Meat and seafood here is fresh as well. Love the oysters, uni, scampi and sashimi. They are all so fresh and the scampi is especially sweet! Would recommend coming here just for the seafood! There's also Agathe, which serves up very good croissants. Definitely also a must try.

An interesting market to visit! Come early to beat the crowds, and yet soak in the vibes. A very different feel from other markets like Fremantle or Victoria Market. Unlike other markets that focus mainly on produce, you can get anything from household items to clothes and even massages. Too much to sample, browse and eat. Seems like almost every cuisine in the world 🌍 has been accounted for over here. It would take at least 2 or 3 more trips here to visit the place properly.

Just like Victoria Market in Melbourne, you will get everything that includes grocery here in South Melbourne. The prices are But high. Not only that it is surrounded with restaurants and cafes. Just great place for hangout and having brunch or coffee. We had coffee from very famous Padre. Bought baby goat from Meat Market. I have attached video clips and photos for reference.

It had a nice atmosphere overall. The variety of vendors and products are amazing. Loved the seafood section where people could order and eat at the site. Definitely will come back here next time.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the South Melbourne Market, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations! This bustling marketplace is an absolute treasure trove for foodies and shopping enthusiasts alike. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was greeted by the lively atmosphere and the aroma of delicious treats wafting through the air. The market is teeming with a diverse range of stalls offering fresh produce, gourmet delights, unique crafts, and so much more. It truly caters to every taste and preference. Love the live oysters from the Oyster Bar. South Melbourne Market is not just about food. It's a haven for unique and handcrafted treasures. I spent hours exploring the arts and crafts section, discovering one-of-a-kind pieces that I couldn't resist taking home. The talented artisans showcased their skills and passion, creating an immersive shopping experience that sets this market apart from others. Another aspect that impressed me was the friendly and knowledgeable stallholders. They were always ready to assist, offer recommendations, and share stories about their products. Their passion and dedication were infectious, making my visit all the more enjoyable. Overall, I can't recommend the South Melbourne Market enough. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor like me, this market is a must-visit destination. It's an immersive and vibrant experience that tantalizes your senses and leaves you with lasting memories. I'm already planning my next visit to explore more of the market's hidden gems.

Roamed the market for the first time. Great vibes. Lots of food places. Ate from an Italian store in the food hall. The coffee was weak for me, but the sausage roll was great! Its not the same as the queen Victoria market. They didn’t sell souvenirs here, and I found that the other stores sold the more expensive items compared to the Queen Victoria Market. But, definitely visit for the experience!

Great market with a bustling atmosphere. Had so much fun zooming around the market lanes. Come with an empty stomach so you can get more food! Highly recommend the oysters from Oyster Bar by Aptus, very fresh and supple.

Nice market to linger and eat food that can be bought at the market stalls. There is something for everyone. Pasta, pizza, burrata, ... my favorite is seafood.
