Charming atmosphere in a cellar that dates back to the 1100’s. Outside of that, I recommend nothing else about this restaurant. Musicians were friendly but out for big tips. Very in your face about it. Service was slow and spotty. Food mediocre. And I did not appreciate the demand for tips from our server too! Would not go back and would not recommend. @thistravelingkitchen

Great fun! Had a very enjoyable evening in the lower cellar. Great beer, great food and great company! If you want traditional Viennise food and drink with wonderfully friendly and entertaining waiters then this place is for you. Recommend booking in advance as it gets very busy.

It was a really nice but slightly hidden restaurant in the middle of Vienna. It's an underground restaurant, with old decorations showing. The service seemed to be a bit rude in the beginning, but after we ordered, the waiter was very friendly and chatted a bit with us. We had a wonderful Schnitzel and the tasty Null komma Josef alcohol free beer.

The place is very rustic and vintage and beautiful! It is an underground cellar indeed! The food was very tasty but it could be a bit better! The portions were big but still it is very pricey. I recommend it for the traditional schnitzel! We didn’t book a table but we visited during an offset hour at 17:00pm.

Ambience is absolutely spot on. Cool place to eat with a great history. We were given a fantastic spot which was comfy and had a great view of the restaurant. Highly recommend the variety of spreads starter. Sadly, this was our first night and ended up being the worst schnitzel we had while in town. The musicians aren’t part of the restaurant staff and awkwardly stand there for tips when they play for you without a request. The server was okay- we felt rushed to order but were left to enjoy our meal and the ambience for a long time, which is great. And whenever we needed something he was quick to get it for us. However, he was very upset that my husband didn’t leave a tip. My husband is French and he does not tip. But because we were speaking English with him they just expected all tourists to tip, I guess. There was a lady out front telling people they couldn’t enter if they didn’t have a reservation. While we were eating there were several people who came in without reservations and were seated…not sure who the lady was.

Cool place with an authentic atmosphere. The food was nice but a little bit pricey. It might be difficult to find a table if you don’t have a reservation.

Fantastic dinner and great ambiance and environment. Completely traditional food and good local music being played on violin, etc. If you get one traditional meal in Vienna, come here. You won't be disappointed!

Great downstairs cellar restaurant full of atmosphere and character. Definitely great for groups, even though I was dining alone. Visit was busy Friday night, 9.45pm My German not being great, the Wiener Bier I asked for with apple strudel was transformed into a Wiener schnitzel. Good up-selling, but honest mistake I'm sure. And a fortunate one too: it was a tasty and filling dish (albeit not the cheapest mistake ever). The strudel to follow was no disappointment. Staff were constantly on the move but hard to track down for the bill and payment. Interaction was classic Viennese: curt and to the point - they were definitely local staff! For any US readers: never expect a "Have a nice day" from waiting staff in Vienna. It's a bonus if you get a smile. It's nothing personal, it's just the way.

The place is very authentic and historic, it was very nice to see, we were very excited to visit. But unfortunately, food was really a bad experience for us. Both salads were full of water, i requested from the waiter to ask the cheif why they were like this but couldn't get an answer. We ordered 2 different wines and were under our rates. I was expecting better wines in this place. For our 4 days in Vienna, this was the worst , i will note recommend for food, but will be nice to see atmosphere.

The fact that the place is like a cellar and is authentic adds a different atmosphere. Smoked pork taste was great. Unfiltered beers and ales tasted good and were easy to drink The prices on the menus were not very expensive. The only bad thing was that the waiter brought a stinky cloth when we asked for a shawl. Culture on this subject may not be owned, but it could be said that it does not exist.

The food was good but not as good as we expected. We had goulash, sausages and snitzel. Goulash was good but snitzel and sausages medium. Small portions too.Despite the fact that the restaurant was pretty empty it took to long to eat.

Super touristy place. We had an unfriendly server and got sat in the only seat that couldn't see any of the beautiful keller. We got the house platter for two: blood sausage was good, sauerkraut was great, the pork belly was good, the rest was ok. Music was bizarre american mashups on the violin and accordian. Too touristy for me, there are better places. Like Tafelspitz.

A hidden gem located in the center of Vienna! The food was traditional Viennese cuisine. From the main dishes to the desserts, everything tasted homemade. The architecture/decor of the restaurant was very unique and cozy. Our server was very kind as well! I absolutely recommend this restaurant!

One of the most interesting place for having traditional Austrian food. Located on the cellar of an old building, the restaurant is located in the city centre of Vienna. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The ambiance is like going back to medieval times, wooden tables and long chairs, with medieval/religious motifs, and live music it's a must! Food is very tasty and served in goos portions. Very touristic also, but worth to visit!

This is a gem in the city although it’s not very hidden. It’s quite popular and is always busy. There are three levels underground in this cellar. If you have a reservation, you get seated on the first level, else there are many tables in level two and three to accommodate people. They are not lying when they say the lowest level is 18m underground. You don’t get any cellphone reception here. The food is really good. Would recommend trying the goulash soup and schnitzel. Also strudel for dessert. They claim to source all ingredients from local Austrian farmers which is a good thing. They have their own musicians who will walk upto you and play you a tune, feel free to ask them to play something you know and sing along! Yes, they also expect a tip at the end of their song.

Unlike other places in town, they welcome people with open arms, tourists included, even without reservation. The service was amazing, extremely nice and helpful each time, which felt nice for non-German speakers like us. Besides the nice food, the place has an awesome underground (literally) vibe, incredibly cozy, that will make you wanna stay there longer ;) Definitely, one place you don't want to miss.

The service didn’t try to search a solution to our problem in a polite way; when we requested for a table they told us to go in a table (that look’s like a wardrobe, but that’s another point) even if other were available. At the end of the dinner the same table that we requested at the beginning was still free. The view from my point of view was half walls. The view from my girlfriend was just We haven’t done any reservations but there were many other free table. We took only appetizer, the food was OK

No one at the door to seat us so we walked around until we found the kitchen, peeked in time see 1 server. We seated ourselves and I counted 6 other tables holding menus and 4 waiting on food. Server told me he was the only one for the entire restaurant! Obviously we left, gorgeous inside though!

Cool cellar restaurant, historic ambience of the year 1339 and the diversity of Viennese cuisine. You can try not only main dishes but also very authentic Austrian winery food. Their wine is very famous, would like to try next time.

Great food in great setting. Have some requests ready for the musicians when they come around. Make a reservation online especially for a day or two in advance. It's easy and they respond promptly. Lots of people were turned away for dinner without them.

Attended the New Year’s Eve celebration here. Delicious meals. Great atmosphere (filled with lots of Italians), amazing service. Would highly recommend. First we thought it will be a tourist trap, but was pleasantly surprised.

This is probably the best restaurant we tried in Vienna! The food was amazing, the place is itself amazing (10/10) and the food is not far behind! Here you can try every viennese specialty (from the wiener schnitzel to the goulash). I would personally recommend the goulash although any type of meat-based dish is amazing. Don’t miss out on it! P.S. would recommend calling in advance for a reservation!

I really felt that I am in the middle age! 2-3 floor under the ground. Old building from 1000 years ago. Great and nice atmosphere! Nice old decoration. Really like to visit there again and again! You have to try the wine there

Food- delicious (not so much difference in taste between Schnitzel for 14€ and 25€; recommend to choose cheaper option); Beer - delicious, only from bottles. Atmosphere- amazing, rustic, somehow gothic vibe. All would be good- if not running one waiter who served like 30 tables. He was sweating and running like slave. We were seated 5 tall and big people next to small table, next to waiters’s cash machine where he throw used forks and knifes. Awful sound behind your back. All guests were somehow uncomfortable watching this one waiter running like crazy, bringing foods and literally throwing plates on the table. Waiter did not pay much attention- he was always running. Sad to watch. Made all experience worse.

It's a bit touristy and corny, but great fun! Be prepared to get serenaded at your table with accordion and violin, for which it's understood you'll tip well. Very atmospheric place. Our server was attentive, and the wait times for good and drink were short. The food was really nice. The veggie strudel was excellent, and my companions had the goulash, which was tender meat in a thick, flavoursome sauce.

I really enjoyed this restaurant and atmosphere. My wife and I arrived around 4pm and there was no body there. By the time we left most of the tables were full. It appears the Viennese eat pretty late. We ordered their meat dish for two. It was a perfect portion for the two of us. Everything was cooked to perfection.

This cellar restaurant is a very nice place to enjoy the Austrian cuisine. The ambiance gives you the feeling that you go back in time while you enjoy a mixed meat platter, pork chops or a schnitzel together with nice beers or wines. I really enjoyed the goulash but the rest looked also very good.

Get away from the commercial streets that are currently Wien. Walk downstairs into a relaxing cellar with good food and beer. They have many of the local ottakringer beer including the hard to find dunkels. Delicious chicken breast schnitzel pounded thin. Hungarian goulash suppe as well. Go early or get reservations for later seating as they will fill up.

A beautiful traditional Austrian place to eat and drink! Good portions and value for money! There is also live music while you are eating!

The place itself is nice, it’s an interesting experience to have a dinner in a Medieval cellar. Food is good, but not extraordinary as some people here claim. Schnitzel was good, topfenstrudel very average. It took like an hour and a half to have a dinner as I needed to wait approx 20 minutes before I ordered (place wasnt even half full). Service was very average, waiter was not managing to serve his tables on time. Not sure if I return here

Authentic place for local food, tasty dishes and kind staff. Fairly priced. The Schnitzel is recommended, there’s not many vegetarian options but that’s just the Austrian cuisine. The atmosphere is worth it tho - it’s in somewhat of an underground place, with statues and images all-around of the 12 apostles (hence the name). It isn’t a tourist trap, but more of a place where even locals would probably go for a meal.

Their website said closed but they are very much open! :) Such a cool space! Takes you back in time. The food was fantastic and a good serving size. Wait staff was fun and provided good service! Highly recommend

Great atmosphere as it's an underground restaurant. Reservation is highly suggested. Beware that you may not have phone signal. They have musicians playing around the restaurant and do hint for service tips. English menu available. It can get a bit hectic and you can be neglected by the server therefore long wait time for service but they are nice. Food was delicious and great portions. Extensive food and drink selection. I would recommend this restaurant for tourists.

Interesting place to experience Austrian food. The ambience is something that catches your attention with entire restaurant based in a Keller. Food was great I had Chicken Schnitzel and Kaisershmarrn. But please note very limited options for someone like me who wanted to have local Austrian dishes in Chicken.

  • 3/5 Graeme M. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting bar and restaurant with a very old style keller feel to it. A few things that were strange for me; only bottled beer where I thought we would have had some draft and there was no music of any sort which meant a strange atmosphere. Worthy of a visit though.

  • 5/5 Alan S. 1 year ago on Google
A very cozy place in Vienna. It is suppose to be a refugee cellar in the events of war. - which means there's a lot of historic significance to it. The inscription said it dates back to the 14th century but was rebuilt in the 16th century. The entire place can fit 400 people dining perfectly but the upper level tends to be quite hot as ventilation isn't that good here. We had a great time there, the servers are professional and there are music services and of course there's a strong suggestion to tip the musicians. They are good tho so we tipped them 5€. Food is decent, I don't want to compare it with different establishments but you pay more for the ambience than the food - That's how I see it. Overall a novel place and worth a visit!

We went here for lunch as the other places were full and our friend recommended this place! Definitely authentic traditional Viennese cellar! Delicious Schnitzel and Sturm, which was still fermenting grape juice, only available during the early autumn.
