Absolutely gorgeous. We stumbled by when walking about the city. There are a lot of benches to sit and relax, the lawns are immaculate and the flowers are very pretty. There's a large building in the middle with an odd piece of art housed inside. It wasn't busy at all when I visited.

This monument stands in tribute to Maria Teresa, who ascended to the Austrian throne through the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713 that was ultimately ignored by its signatories. Something which led to wars and loss of territory for Austria. The monument features topped with a sculpture of the eponymous empress. Below her on the pedestal are female allegorical figures of the four cardinal virtues, prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice. Below the virtues at each corner of the pedestal are politicians and advisors to the empress. The monument is well … monumental, and definitely worth a look if in the area.

The Monument to Maria Theresia can be seen at the centre of Maria-Theresien-Platz between the Kunsthistorische (Fine Art History) and Naturhistorisches (Natural History) Museums. This is an impressive landmark to see in Vienna and is well worth a few minutes to enjoy when spending time in this area of the city. Historically, Empress Maria Theresa was an important European figure during the 18th century. The only female ruler from the Habsburg dynasty, Maria Theresa's reign lasted between 1740-1780. She famously gave birth to 16 children, most notably Marie Antoinette, who would marry Louis XVI and later become the Queen of France. The monument was created by German sculpture Kaspar von Zumbusch in 1888. It is large in size and scale as well as being quite decorative. The base is 19 metres tall and topped by the seated figure of Empress Maria Theresa. The empress is crowned, dressed in royal attire with a sceptre in her left hand. She is extending her right hand outward as if addressing her many subjects. The pedestal includes detailed reliefs and life-size standing figures representing counsel, administration, military, science & arts. The four corners of the base feature bronze figures of the four Generals who served during the reign of Maria Theresa. Collectively, it is a comprehensive and well designed monument to view. During our recent visit, we enjoyed seeing the Monument to Maria Theresia amidst a layer of late winter snow that fell during the recent cold spell. This made for nice scenery and a photography and is something I hope to experience again in the future when visit Vienna. In the end, for those who enjoy monument viewing, this is one of the must-see of this kind in Vienna. You can enjoy the landmark from afar as you approach but make sure to allow time up close to see the monument details. This can easily do this before or after visits to the Kunst, Natural History Museum or on your way back into the Innere Stadt after visiting MuseumsQuartier.

Maria-Theresien-Platz is a prominent public square located in Vienna, Austria. It is named after Empress Maria Theresa, one of Austria's most influential rulers. Location: Maria-Theresien-Platz is situated in the heart of Vienna, between the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) and the Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum). The square is part of the Ringstraße, the famous boulevard that encircles the city center. Historical Significance: The square was built in the 19th century and is considered one of the grandest public spaces in Vienna. It was designed to commemorate Maria Theresa and celebrate her reign. Monumental Statues: The focal point of the square is the grand monument of Maria Theresa, which stands at its center. The statue depicts the empress on a horse-drawn carriage, surrounded by allegorical figures representing her different realms. On either side of the square, there are two identical equestrian statues of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles of Austria, both prominent military figures from Austrian history. Museums: Maria-Theresien-Platz is flanked by two magnificent museums—the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum. These architectural marvels house extensive collections of scientific and artistic treasures, making them popular attractions for visitors to Vienna. Promenade and Gardens: The square is adorned with beautiful gardens and tree-lined promenades, providing a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. It is a popular spot for locals and tourists to take a leisurely stroll, especially during the warmer months. Christmas Market: During the festive season, Maria-Theresien-Platz hosts a charming Christmas market, where visitors can enjoy the enchanting atmosphere, browse traditional handicrafts, savor delicious seasonal treats, and immerse themselves in the holiday spirit. Accessibility: Maria-Theresien-Platz is easily accessible by public transportation, including tram and bus services. The nearest subway station is Volkstheater, which is just a short walk away. Overall, Maria-Theresien-Platz is a significant historical and cultural landmark in Vienna. Its central location, impressive statues, neighboring museums, and serene gardens make it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the city.

The monument to Maria Theresa (1717-1780), ruler of the Habsburg lands, is one of the most important monuments of the Habsburg monarchy in Vienna. It is located in the center of the park and around it rise the mighty buildings of the museums. For Christmas, we enjoy New Year's stalls and goodies here.

Sadly, the entire area is under construction, with many paths blocked off. Only one fountain and 2 benches were accessible. We had to be very creative to block all the construction trucks and cranes out of our photos. The main statue of Maria-Theresa is absolutely impressive, it took the sculptor and his apprentice 13 years to create.

Beautiful square between two magnificent museums. The christmas market here is great, with lots of handicrafts. The square is a bit of a crossroads between the Hofburg, Museum quarter, and other places, so always people there offering info on concerts/tours as well. Spectacular stuatues in the centre.

My visit to Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna was nothing short of enchanting. This public square, nestled between the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum, is a true architectural marvel. The grandeur of the buildings, with their exquisite detailing and majestic facades, left me in awe. It felt like stepping into a page of history, with each structure telling its own story. What made my visit particularly memorable was the beautiful Christmas bazaar held in the square. The festive atmosphere was magical, with twinkling lights, charming stalls, and the scent of seasonal treats in the air. The bazaar offered a delightful array of local crafts, ornaments, and culinary delights, making it a perfect spot to soak in the holiday spirit. The blend of the square's stunning architecture and the vibrant energy of the Christmas market created an experience that was both culturally rich and festively joyous. It's a place where the past and present merge beautifully, offering a glimpse into Vienna's heritage while celebrating the season's cheer.

The outside lawn is great for an evening picnic with the family or couple's leisure walk. Large open public space, and at the time we visited (outside only), there are some construction activities going on. Also be mindful that the frequent entering and exiting police/ security vehicles with short burst of siren as this site is often visited by VIP and dignitary during core business/ early evening hours.

Picture-perfect Maria Theresien Platz has two of Austria’s most important museums on either side. To the west, the Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum), and to the east, the Museum of Art History (Kunsthistorisches Museum). These are fantastic museums but be warned: they are huge! Mihir and I spent almost a whole day in the Natural History Museum alone. Located in the centre of the square is a fountain dedicated to Tritons and Naiads.

The Maria-Theresien-Platzis a fairly large area that I experienced when I was in Vienna for a short time in November. It has two museums one on each side of the plaza with a statue and monument the Maria-Theresien sculpture. In the plaza here in November up to around Christmas this plaza has one of Vienna’s many Christmas markets that has venders selling food drinks and Christmas products. There is also a few places set up too stand around and eat or drink outside on the square.

Maria T Platz was laid out in the course of the last phase of the Hofberg in the second half of the 19th Century. It takes its name from the Maria Teresa monument unveiled in 1988. It was commissioned by Franz Josef 1 from designs by Casper Zumbush the figures around the monument have a remarkable weight of around 44 tons in total! The architecture was designed by Carl Hasenger. When I was there it housed a spectacular Christmas Market

A beautiful garden between two great identical buildings, that happen to also be museums. There are also people selling tickets in the middle, which I don't like, but otherwise it's maintained, well placed and offers good photo spots. The statue of Maria Theresa is kind of dark for such a sunny and green place, but it's still a great artwork worth going round.

There was quite a large Christmas market going on when we were here in December, before Christmas. Lots of stalls selling tons of different foods. It wasn't super pack as we were able to manoeuvre a pram around. I managed to grab one of the special cups here. The drinks have an extra, refundable charge for the cups so I just kept the cup as a souvenir. They also had stands selling other interesting items like toys and decorations. It was quite nice but it did detract attention from the two amazing looking buildings on either side, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Museum of Natural History.

Great place in the city center, lots of history and beauty in one place. On the square is the monument of Maria Theresa, which was discovered in 1888 by Empress Sisi. The monument is about 19 m high and weighs approximately 44 tonnes. During the reign of Maria Theresa from 1740 to 1780, she reformed the school system and took care of state affairs as well as her 16 children. The twin buildings, on either side of the impressive monument, house the Museum of Art History in Vienna and the Natural History Museum. It is worth seeing!
