Der
Rathausmann
(Kopie
1985)
In
1882,
the
Vienna
City
Guard
was
placed
on
the
top
of
the
newly
built
Vienna
City
Hall
Building.
From
then
on,
it
stood
high
at
the
top
of
the
city
and
withstood
the
scorching
heat
and
cold
for
a
full
100
years.
In
1985,
the
City
Guard
underwent
its
first
rest.
When
it
was
loaded
with
a
new
look
and
mounted
by
helicopter
again,
thousands
of
Viennese
citizens
watched.
The
City
Guard
was
carefully
designed,
cast,
and
welded
by
Palace
Mechanic
Naylor
based
on
the
style
of
the
knight's
armor
in
the
Emperor
Maximilian's
Armory.
After
the
completion
of
the
Vienna
Government
Building,
the
machinist
dedicated
his
work
free
of
charge
to
the
city
government
and
the
people
of
Vienna.
The
Vienna
City
Guard
is
3.4
meters
tall.
In
1986,
a
life-size
model
of
the
Guards
was
erected
in
the
City
Hall
Square
for
people
to
view.
Erzherzog
Maximilian,
Archduke
of
Austria,
Emperor
of
Mexico
Maximilian
1833-1867
Maximilian
was
the
second
brother
of
Emperor
Franz
Joseph
and
the
most
capable
and
talented
of
the
emperor's
brothers.
He
received
strict
military
education
since
childhood,
served
in
the
Austrian
army,
and
also
served
as
the
governor
of
the
Austrian
colony.
He
had
an
outstanding
personality
and
fanatical
pursuit
of
honor
and
power,
and
was
known
as
Napoleon
III.
In
1863,
Maximilian
relinquished
his
authority
as
Archduke
of
Austria
and
accepted
the
coronation
as
Emperor
of
Mexico.
When
he
set
foot
on
the
land
of
South
America,
he
realized
that
what
was
waiting
for
him
was
not
enthusiastic
cheers
but
angry
shouts.
He
was
sentenced
to
death
after
losing
his
fight
against
the
Mexican
president.
The
execution
took
place
five
years
later,
when
Maximilian
was
only
35
years
old.
A
grand
funeral
was
held
after
Maximilian's
body
was
returned
to
the
country,
and
his
statue
was
built
in
the
Church
Square
in
District
13
in
1871.
The
Grand
Duke
often
lived
in
a
villa
in
the
area
during
his
lifetime.
He
was
optimistic
and
friendly
by
nature,
and
many
residents
donated
money
for
his
statue.
