Pretty expensive for what you get. 8 euros for a cemetery is crazy. Can’t see all the coffins up close either, some are blocked off (the most interesting ones). Not a lot of information, and all of it is in German anyway. Its not very large either, so you get done with it quick. I was walking in circles just to feel like I at least got my money’s worth, lol. It’s cool to visit but I don’t think the price is justified at all.

Quiet steep ticketprices for what is, in the end, basically a several rooms of, albeit very nice looking, grave tombs. Ideally to get an idea of the many ages this family controlled large swats of Europe and the wealth they acquired. (it's pretty ironic that even dead they keep earning money from 'the common citizen' 🤓)

Impressive crypt that is steeped in history Really lacked assistance for non-German speakers (All signs solely in German and no guided experience offered in English) Glad we went but wouldn’t recommend to somebody on a short trip to Vienna - so much more to see/do ahead of it.

Interesting way to learn about the Hapsburg line. The largest family tomb I have ever visited with hundreds of years and generations of Hapsburgs each buried in a metal sarcophagus, including Maria Theresia and Franz Joseph, as well as Maximilian (who ruled Mexico) and the last Emporer of Austro-Hungary, Karl and his Empress who passed in 1989. Even more recently deceased relatives are buried here as well.

One of the must-visit places in Vienna. Since 1633, the Capuchin monastery Imperial Crypt serves as the principal place of entombment for the members of the House of Habsburg. This is the burial place of 12 emperors and 18 empresses and this crypt contains all in all the bones of 145 Habsburg royalty, plus urns containing the hearts or cremated remains of four others. Place of silence and memory.

(Translated by Google) The remains of the rulers of the dynasty in whose empire the sun never set lie beneath the modest church and monastery of the Capuchin Order. A tour of the Capuchin Crypt takes you through 400 years of Austrian and European history, from the Thirty Years' War to revolutions and the first ideas for a united Europe. The greatest artists of their time designed the crypts, and various symbols of power on the coffins testify to the imperial claim of the dynasty. Symbols of impermanence and faith reflect personal trust in God and humility before the Creator. Ultimately, however, the human fates behind the offices touch the triumphs and defeats. Today the remains of 150 personalities rest in the Capuchin crypt.

Truly a magnificent and must see place in Vienna. The capuchin church it’s attached to is fairly unassuming by Vienna standards, but ok descending into the crypt, you will see one of the most incredible sights available anywhere in the world. All the splendor and excess of a dead empire on display, massive coffins with life sized human sculptures holding them up. It’s a place where you feel the true weight of history, all that was and never will be again. It’s an incredibly moving sight, and I can’t recommend it enough

€8 entry fee felt a little too expensive for something which only took about 30 minutes to go around. Not much information about what was there and who the people were

The Kapuzinergruft is a remarkable place - to encounter the sarcophagi almost all the major figures of several centuries of the Habsburg rulers is truly a breath-taking experience for anyone with an interest in history. Perhaps you should do a bit more research than I did; only when organising my pictures did I fully appreciate who some of the individuals were and I completely missed one Habsburg who I would otherwise have liked to have visited. The crypt is also magnificent an an artistic level as some of the sarcophagi are among the most remarkable metal sculpture works I have ever seen. The grandiosity can be a bit overwhelming (Maria Theresa's sarcophagus resembles nothing so much as a barge or a parade float) but the intricacy of the details and the beauty of the sculptures are extraordinary.

Contains members of the Hapsburg Royal family dating back to the 1600s. Lots of beautifully ornate caskets. Little plans of the crypt in various languages are free to pick up, but they only mention a few of the people. Lots of caskets are not featured, and too far back or round corners, so impossible to read who they were.

Many emperors and empresses as well as other members of the Hapsburg family are buried here in impressively ornate coffins and free standing tombs. Every one of them has an interesting history worth looking up and reading. There was minimal airflow on the hot day we visited, and some of the rooms got quite stuffy. Photography is thankfully allowed. Recommend buying ticket online. Restrooms are on the premises.

This is by far the best place ever, I mean so much effort has been put into those tombs and coffins, you can feel the grandeur but also the peace, it is a bit difficult to explain, but must visit and see with your own eyes

Fascinating piece of history. So many intricate and unusual tombs in one place and the work that’s gone into them is astounding. Could be labelled a bit better but definitely a place you shouldn’t miss, especially for history buffs. The atmosphere is pretty unique.

It’s definitely a must see place. Hapsburg gamily was one of the most influential families in the history of Austria and Austrian empire. In this crypt there are 145 berried members of the royal Hapsburg family. Sarcophaguses were built using different materials, from bronze and coper (and other metals) to silver and gold for details on the sarcophaguses. For the best enjoyment make sure to learn more about the details on the sarcophaguses and their meaning because then most of it will make more sense. For example, a figure with folded eyes is not just that, it represents a guardian of the sarcophagus. Etc :) The ticket was something around 10 euros per person. It takes around an hour to run through the whole setup, unless you are into details :)

As far as I remember - it was there in 2016 - the entrance area was pretty bare, unspectacular, and from the outside the crypt was rather neutral. But then it goes very deep down ... An amazing visit at this place where tombs of the Australian imperial family is located. Some of the tombs are impressive with huge decorations. Also are present the tombs of Sissi and Franz. It's a place you must visit if you travel to Vienna! The only think is that the tombs are very dusty.. but sometimes this is what makes the visit characteristic!

Nicely displayed sarcophagi but the various translated brochure did not help the view understand or flow through displays. All the signs are in German, so if you don’t speak German, you’re just wandering through rooms after rooms of intricately made sarcophagi. Most interesting are the sheer amounts of baby/child crypts.

Really cool. We bought tickets online for 10a the next day and showed them at the door and got right in. It is smaller and probably could walk through on your own in 10-15 min without stopping to read anything. All the cryptos are amazing and creepy. Very clean place. Highly recommend seeing it... (also.. there are crypts of children)

After spending a week visiting palaces and seeing portraits of Habsburgs in museums, it was a solemn experience to visit their final resting place and to be reminded that the end of the road is the same for everyone.

  • 3/5 Andreea D. 1 year ago on Google
The place is in great condition and one can see how much effort was and still is being put in keeping this place an attraction even if it is a graveyard. The written guide which is found at the entrance is a must to be able to navigate through the history timetable but at some point it is to hard to keep track of all the Marias and Josephs. The main attraction should be Sisi’s grave/coffin/burial but the craftsmanship is very decent and the place is simple in comparison to the other coffins..which is not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind. All in all, was a cool experience but a pricey one and I cannot justify it. Is this an interesting place? Yes! Is it a must? Absolutely not. Perhaps for half of the price.

CAPUCHINS' CRYPT The burial place of the Habsburg family in Vienna It is just below the humble church and monastery of the Order of the Capuchin Friars, where the mortal remains of the rulers of the Habsburg empire are laid to rest. A tour through the Capuchins' Crypt takes you through 400 years of Austrian and European history, from the Thirty Years' War to revolutions and the first ideas for a united Europe. The greatest artists of their time designed the rooms, symbols of power on the sarcophagi bear testimony to the dynasty's imperial claim. Signs of transience and faith reflect personal trust in God and humility before their Creator. However, it is the human fate behind the offices, the triumphs and defeats which are ultimately moving. I have visited other Cappuccini churches in the past. This one is different because the simplicity of the church is balanced off by the opulence of some of the coffins in the crypt below. My favorite was the Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico, executed only after three years after his election.

This is the resting place of 149 members of the royal Habsburg family starting with the crypt's founders, but also proeminent figures such as Maria Theresa, Franz Joseph I, Sisi, Zita, the last Empress, her son, Otto and daughter in law, Regina. This is a place I recommend visiting before or after Schonbrunn to get a better umderstanding of royal life in the Germanic and Austrian Empire. The Crypt is impressing. It consists of multiple chabers representing different periods of time. Deffinately the most impressive tomb is Maria Theresa's, her..."coffin" occupies an entire room. Worth seeing for its history and impressive sculptures.

The main attraction in this simple church is the underground place of entombment for members of the House of Habsburg. Its an interesting place to visit, the place is morbid but also beautiful the 100 (or more) metal sarcophagi, some heart urns range in style from simple and plain to elaborately decorate. One can see little coffins of children and this is touching, and signs of offerings little artifacts people place near the coffins remind the visitors that life and memory linger on.

A dimly lit crypt with tombs. They vary in their detail and size, but many of the Austrian emperors are here. The artwork and attention to detail are impressive. It would be helpful to have some additional background before your visit, and visits to the Stephansdom crypt and Hofburg would be helpful for gaining that information before coming here. The building itself offers little to see. Plan about 60 minutes. No photography is allowed.

The crypt of the Habsburg Dynasty. Beneath the Capuchin church lies the tombs of the Habsburg dynasty. Maria Theresa, Maximilian the doomed emperor of Mexico, Franz Josef and Sisi, and a host of others lie buried here. Their coffins are elaborate and sometimes in strange macabre taste, but for anyone with an interest in the history of Vienna, or the Habsburgs in general, this place is a must-see.

Some of the coffins are pretty impressive and there is some nice information but be aware that this is all you are getting...a bunch of coffins. Spooky for kids (which is a plus), I wish there was a bit more information on the people resting here...it's mainly just a sentence or two.
