This is an amazing experience, it's a must to visit if you love opera. Each seat is equipped with a small screen that has the script on in English, French or German so no need to buy the libretto (booklet). All the good places are usually fully booked so I recommend you book ahead of time.

Amazing experience. Went to see Rigoletto and the production was flawless, impeccable. The theatre itself is a jewel. It's so enormous that I didn't even have time to see all the rooms. Definitely visit if you're in Vienna.

Overwhelmingly beautiful building and lovely performance in the opera Capriccio. Make sure to wear semi-formal clothes (long pants for men) to be permitted to enter. (We visited on a very hot day in shorts but fortunately has a set of spare pants in the backpack.)

Breathtaking. The box office view is incredible. I’ve no other words. If you want to watch the show in peace you’ll need to get good seats. Seats do have subtitles to help the audience to know what’s going on.

The seats on the floor are like a big theatre hall. You can see from those seats without a binoculars but it is better not to buy from the backs especially if you are short. Also, I think the balcony seats are better if you can find a place from the front of balcony. We couldn't see the orchestra because we were sitting on the seats on floor. Anyways, you can rent binoculars for 2 euros in there. Don't go with tracksuits or shorts, they don't force you to wear suits but they won't let you in if you wear something not usual or daily life. NOTE FOR UNDER 27 AGE: you can buy any ticket for 20 euros, search about it on the website. It is really easy to do and you can even buy the front seats for 20 €.

A few tips for visiting the Opera. There are small screens in front of your seat with captions in multiple languages: German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese (I don't know if it was Mandarin or Cantonese). You can buy standing tickets for cheap on the day of the opera. You can do this in one of two ways: either queue up about 2hrs before the performance or buy them from the website at 10am sharp. I'd recommend doing it online so that you don't waste precious holiday time by standing in line. I bought standing tickets on the ground floor for €18 and the view was amazing (pictures attached). My standing ticket had a reserved place, so I didn't need to worry about arriving early. However I'd recommend getting there at least half an hour before, possibly more if you would like to wander around. You need to check in your coats. You can't just use any cloakroom however because it depends on your ticket, so be sure to have your ticket ready otherwise the cloakroom staff will become impatient. The lines at the bar can be very long, and the intervals are quite short. You are not allowed to take drinks into the auditorium, so I would get a drink before the show instead.

Absolutely awestruck after witnessing our first opera. Everything was managed so well, staring from inspection of tickets to guidance till your seat. This is definitely a must if you are in Vienna.

An amazingly opulent building which exceeded expectations. Ticket prices are available to suit most budgets, however, like everywhere, you get what you pay for. It's worth noting that the ticket I bought was described as "restricted view" but in reality I had no view of the stage or orchestra from my seat (in the second row of a box). If you can't stand for long periods bear this in mind when choosing your seat. That said, the overall experience was brilliant and I would definitely recommend a visit if you can.

A superb evening watching the ballet Sleeping Beauty accompanied by the brilliant Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. A fantastic opera house with such opulent surroundings, fantastic frescos and carvings. Well worth a tour before you come to a performance to hear the history of the building. A thoroughly memorable experience in one of the world’s top opera houses.

One of my favourite experiences in Vienna, symbolising so much of what the city is about and has to offer. The guided tour is well worth the price, lead by a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who was passionate about the Opera House. Walking around the building and seating in the main theatre is awe-inspiring. It’s bound to any musician the chills!

Very glad to visit the ballet in Wien Opera! My husband bought the tickets before 100 minutes for 10 euro! We sat in the center. Cool evening! Professional orchestra and ballet dancers! 5 stars! #wienopera #ballet

Nice architectural work. I don’t know how people can make this perfect acoustic room. Really close to public transportation. They also have a regular performance on a daily basis. Tickets are available online or the street next to the building. When you’re in Vienna, you’ll need to visit at least once in a lifetime. Enjoy a music performance inside and marvel the acoustic engineering.

Definitely a must for Vienna. If you are student or the prices are high for you, i would recommend you to get into the line in Operngasse side of the opera and buy a standing ticket which costs only 10€. Don't think that you will stand up during the whole show, of course there are seats and the view is very good.

The place is amazing. You can live an wonderful experience in here! Give me goosebumps just for remembering the night I watched the Tristan Isolde from Wagner! The acoustic of the place is incredible, if you have time, the chance to check it up and the likes for this music, this is a must go and do in Wien!!!

We got standing room tickets in the gallery and it was worth every minute and penny. You must wear closed toe or semi formal footwear. And men must wear pants. To even buy tickets they will check your attire. We got there two hours before the show started to wait in line. It wasn’t horribly long and worth the wait. The cafes inside were delicious and there were many of them. Pictures don’t do the architecture or history Justice. If you’re in Vienna and love music GO FOR IT!! They have a bag check if you are traveling and can’t put it anywhere else.

Very good tour guide. We find it a bit difficult to get tickets on line so we went directly to the opera house. Purchased tickets with no wait and then you go inside to wait until the tour in your language begins. We only waited a half hour and enjoyed visiting with other travelers. Even though there is some construction and cleaning going on in the off season it is still worth a visit.

I had the pleasure of experiencing a performance at the Vienna State Opera, and it was nothing short of magical. From the moment I stepped into the grand foyer, I was transported into a world of elegance and history. The architecture is breathtaking, with intricate details and a majestic staircase leading to the auditorium. The performance itself was a testament to the world-class talent that graces this stage. The orchestra's skill was undeniable, playing each note with precision and emotion. The singers were phenomenal, with voices that resonated not just in the hall, but deep within the soul. The acoustics in the opera house are impeccable, making every seat the best seat in the house. What struck me the most was the atmosphere. There's a sense of reverence and appreciation among the audience, which is palpable. It's not just about watching a performance; it's about experiencing a piece of art that has been perfected over centuries. The Vienna State Opera isn't just a venue; it's an institution that embodies the heart and soul of classical music and performance.

Magnificent building. During the tour I got useful information about the history, architecture, auditorium, epic stage, acoustics of the building and Vienna’s Philharmonic and in the end videos on the notable Staatsoper Opera Ball event preparation and the last year’s scenes.

When you visit Vienna in July and August please be aware that the Opera house is on a break and that they don’t offer any shows during that time. However, you can join a guided tour through the opera which i can really really recommend. You will be able to get nice insights about the Opera house and also see parts of it that is not available to the general public.

Vienna opera house will always be a place I would love to revisit. During my first visit, I appreciate the Vienna State Opera’s long history of working with artists. One of the fantastic project is Safety Curtain- it is an on-going exhibition series taking place in the Vienna State Opera, Austria. The exhibition turns the safety curtain into a temporary show for contemporary artists every year. They also have a exhibition that shows curtains from the past and the stories behind them. Do visit the place. There are so many other things worth discovering. Amazing artists and opera as well.

It was Molière who said, “Of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive”. Finally, we got to the Vienna Opera ! Prices are rather expensive, for the Parkett seats- 239 € for the opera of “The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia)”by Gioachino Rossini and Giovanni Paisiello. Such an excitement! Gorgeous building with Magnificent interior. Interesting historical fact: both Vienna Opera building and Palais Garnier building for Paris Opera started to build in the same 1861 year.

We went for an excursion there. The place is amazing itself. The excursion is about 45 min. And you’ll learn about the history of this place and also the traditions of Vienna opera and balls. The excursion was not organized well. First of all it was late and then inside we were clashing all the time with other groups. But it worth to visit it anyway.

Really beautiful and we loved that you can go out on the balcony. We sat in the cheap(er) seats and could still see/appreciate the music. We aren't exactly Opera experts so the screens with English and German translations were great. Glad we got to see an Opera but on the fence as to whether it was worth the money.

The fabled Opera of Vienna has been impressive since hundreds of years and this review will also keep up to the tradition. It's still amazing, breathtaking and simply the best. The guided tour performed for us was very easy to understand, contained hundreds of unique details and stories about the place and mesmerized the audience. Don't wait, go there and enjoy it to the fullest! Definitely a must visit during trip to Vienna.

A must-visit cultural place in Vienna. But be careful, they are very strict about arriving on time or even returning back to the seat after a break. In my case, I couldn't return back to the seat after visiting the toilet, even though my seat was right next to the door. The strictness does not appear reasonable in some cases. Anyway, if you are in Vienna and have a chance to visit Opera, I highly recommend!

Very grand, we had the tour which lasted about 45 minutes. It's very opulent, well worth having a look. The guide was a young lady and was very friendly, she very clearly loved the opera and the Vienna Operahaus.

Must visit in Vienna. Another Magnificent architecture testament to the creativity and ingenuity of that time. The whole structure is the masterpiece from outside to inside. The ceilings, column, beam, staircase specially inside the main opera. If you have time, watch an opera, ballet or what is on that time. But buy tickets way in advance. Specially the popular ones. I had a difficult time getting good seat at Giselle 1month before the show.

Amazing historic place welcoming amazing performances, but an old building doesn't mean its a perfect building. Many seats are located in blind spots. You should mind this and check the view of your seat before making your reservation All stuff was very kind and helping very patiently.

You can visit the opera with a guided tour and/or by buying a ticket for a show during the season. I highly recommend both as the tour well give you a historical background and a show well allow you to enjoy the venue. Also, the opera offers various different shows every week so it's possible to attend a variety of shows! Be mindful of purchasing tickets well in advance. Another option is buying standing "seats" on the day of the show online at 10:00 am.

Spectacular views. I would have loved it if the director had chosen to use the whole of the stage and not emphasize the right. There were major and multiple segments of "Don Giovanni" we completely missed because s/he simply didn't realize there was a Stage Right, too.

I accomplished my goal to visit the most famous Opera House in the world and the building, both interior and exterior, is very nice. I was really disappointed by the seats we had as we couldn’t see the stage at all! We went to see Carmen by Georges Bizet and that was a modern interpretation of the iconic masterpiece which I didn’t like at all, as when I hear that music I imagine traditional costumes of the XIX century and not naked guys jumping in the underwear and mini skirts on the stage 🤢 The orchestra did a great job and the singers have great voices but those costumes ruined the experience on my opinion.

Well worth a visit! Building is fantastic and experience was unforgettable. Only downside was queuing/standing for so long to get the cheap tickets but that's what you get when you don't want yo pay >£150 for a seat ticket!

An incredible theatre to see. It’s sooo stunning to be there. I had the best time visiting this opera. The interior is so special and has a huge background. The staff is very clear and efficient with a good sense of humour. The explanations are very clear. I recommend this place to anyone interested in art, architecture, opera and history. Loved it!

this historic opera house was visually pleasing to the eye. Surprisingly, it felt much smaller in person in some areas and extremely vast in others. The staff was helpful and informative and the facility was well maintained. The seats were more or less comfortable, depending on where you are located. The views from the top balcony were excellent, however one might need to take advantage of the opera glasses to fully enjoy some of the pieces. The bars throughout had a good selection of beverages, albeit on the pricier side of things as expected. The gift shop was adequate and had several postcards and other items that provided a great depiction of the opera house over the many years of existence. Well worth a visit and to take in a show.

  • 5/5 Sheree C. 4 years ago on Google
The best opera experience, totally worth while if you are a fan of opera and classical music. A few notes - It is traditional, so make sure you check dress code. My husband had to go back to the hotel and change his pants.. luckily he made it back in time. We managed to get standing room tickets for €10 each - only cash is accepted. In winter make sure you check your coat before heading to the standing room area or they will ask you to go back out to coat check.

My first Opera. I'm glad it was in one of the beautiful and famous in Europe. We've got the standing places for 10€, it is the real deal if you want to attempt a show especially if you a novice like me (make sure to come 2 hours before the show for the tickets). The staff is friendly and speak English well. Definitely a place to go in Vienna

Horrible experience. If you want to visit a show please note that if you have booked a seat in the left or right side you cannot see the stage. I could see maybe 40% of the stage but i had to lean forward a lot to do it. If you dont lean forward you do not see anything (i am not overreacting). When you lean forward (in order to see) you can't understand the dialogue because the translation screen isn't installed in a spot that helps you read while watching!!! I found the price VERY expensive. I paid 240 euros (bought outside the opera from official sellers) for 2 seats and we could not even see what was happening in the stage. My wifre which was pregnant at that time couldnt lean forward at all so she didnt see or understand anything! On the other hand the inside of the building, the architecture, the statues and the walls are astonishing. I do not recommend it if you do not had seats in the middle rows.

A beautiful place especially by night with the lightnings! However I wanted to see a concert at the opera and the site where I was redirected for that was at Musikverein. Even if this other place is really beautiful I wish I'd knew that the two places were linked and not discover at the last minute that I'm not at the right place

My first visit to the Opera to see Lucia di Lammermoor, what can I say... Simply amazing. We found it easy to find our seats and to get a drink during the intermission.

Loved the guided tour so much! Short, but a great insight into beautiful place and how they operate on a daily basis.

Before visiting i would believe that i would enjoy it so much. It's a must see in Vienna. The voices the actors the building. All incredible!

Although it is the most famous and arguably the most flamboyant opera in the world, I think the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg is the bigger and more impressive than this one. I strongly suggest to see an opera here, even though the prices are extremely expensive (if you want to get a decent view of the stage). You can also buy a standing ticket before the show with more reasonable prices but it can get too exhausting to watch by standing 3-hour long and it's very hard to see the stage properly from that high distance.

This place is remarkable! The gilding of the decorations, the grandeur of the amphitheatre, the beauty of the view over the roofs and the grace of the artists are simply remarkable! This place touched me a lot, for the ballet of course, but also for the harmony and the magic of the air.

The building is stunning, and before the show (or during intermission) you can take advantage of the opera's many balconies to get a lovely view of the city and the rooftop statues. One should note that when the opera categorizes a seat as having an "only partial view", they aren't joking!

Fantastic Opera House - great history - very busy - tours are up to 32 people per group - my husband and I felt they rushed it forward as they are back to back tours. Pre-book as this is one of the biggest attractions in Vienna - we had to wait 3 days to do this so book in advance!

Gorgeous venue, top tier performances, and you can get insanely affordable entertainment if you go for the standing tickets. It's the Vienna Opera! You will absolutely not regret taking the time to get a show at this historic and magnificent location.

Brilliant place to visit, and interesting tour, quite informative. Just lovely. But if you have Vienna pass and trying to get tickets, get there a bit early for the time of the tour you want as there will be a lot of people waiting for tickets. You can't skip the queue if you have the Vienna pass.

Queued for standing tickets.Quite hard to stand for three hours but I had a very good view and enjoyed it. You get a little pad with translation of the opera story in front of you. Some people really dress up but smart casual is fine.

Certainly if you visit Vienna you should consider to assist a guided tour to the opera House or enjoying a live performance. I did both: the guided tour cost €13 for about 40 minutes and it's available in different languages. Theatre tickets instead are quite expensive and must be booked in advance: you can find some cheap standing tickets on the same day. Recommended.

We had a great seat watching the opera. We also went a week and a half later to watch the Sleeping Beauty this evening. There's usually 2 intermissions, so you can grab a drink or use the restroom. You can rent a binacular for €2 but you need to check your coat. Anyway, it was such a pleasure to be here and appreciate the theater.

Nothing more to add to all reviews. The place is amazing, the service effective and I didn't expect everyone to have their small screen with subtitles even in French! ;) Please note that it is really, really warn in the balcony. Oh.. and don't make the same mistake as me and come dressed properly otherwise you will really feel under-dressed!

It is worthy of being one of the top four opera houses in the world, and it is beautiful from the inside out. There are small screens in front of the seats, and the lines are translated in eight languages, so you don't have to worry about not being able to read them. For opera without a parting screen, if you go out you can't come back, so don't drink too much water.

One of the famous attractions at Vienna with rich history. I think the tour could have been better- little big crowd with 1 tour guide. Inside was good but I feel there are lot better opera houses around the world. I believe the history and outside the auditorium makes it worth for 4 stars and must see.

Loved the architecture of the building, the sound quality and the show itself was amazing. The only issue is with the ridiculous tickets they are selling. The seats they put you in are very funny. I get that they want to sell the seats and make money but I don't understand what's the need, even if they put reasonable seats with valid pricing I think people will still buy. The lowest fare on the site is like a trap. My only advice is do not get trapped. Just buy good price tickets with good seating arrangements to enjoy the show. For the first timers like us may not understand the seating arrangements so just get the normal seats with normal price tags. Also we aren't allowed to take pictures or videos but I still took a few. I am standing on the seat just so you know. :p

Beautiful building, friendly staff (for the most part), well kept facilities, definitely a place to enjoy your evening. It's easier to buy tickets in advance in mobile form, so that you won't have to wait in line to buy or pick them up. For the operas formal wear is recommended, but not required. What they recommend is "smart casual" or "business attire".

Excellent performance I was able to watch daphne and it was very enjoyable. The quality is on a different level. The leading lady actually had an accident near the end but she gracefully overcame it

One of the most amazing buildings in the world. Beautiful on the outside, should see the terrace, but astonishing on the inside. Was lucky to attend an opera performance recently and it was one of my wishes come true. Also the people that work in it, couldn't be more accommodating. A night I'll never forget for sure. Buy tickets in advance and even if it is in the upper areas, sound and view are great. It's an experience you won't regret.

We did the tour here with a lovely tour guide, and despite not having gone to an opera before, I found it interesting and informative. It's an impressive building and even more so impressive the work that goes on behind the scenes. I'd recommend the tour to anyone with an interest in architecture, history, and of course, opera and the arts.

It was an amazing experience to see an opera. I was travelling from the US and glad I got to experience the wonderful music. I couldn't see all of the stage because of my seat, but I appreciated the music so much that it didn't matter. And the English subtitles were so helpful! Definitely worthwhile to see if you are visiting Vienna.

Very nice old building and good atmosphere in general. Anyhow it seems to be too much people to be put in at any cost. Place at higher levels in everything but row 1 do not make any sense as you will see almost nothing. Stands seem to be the better and cheaper option if you can stand the climate. It is freaking hot inside and only little air circulation. Actually, shorts may be more suitable than a suit to have a comfortable event. In addition, drinks are massively overpriced. You may argue for the location and occasion but a bottle of water remains a bottle of water. Other big event houses offer meanwhile free water as sell service. Probably time to rethink the current concept.

We had a wonderful time at the beautifully presented L'elisir d'amore! It was phenomenal! I've always wanted to attend an international opera. It was a lot of fun attending with my coworker/friend. I was told the Vienna Opera House was an excellent choice to see an opera there. 😁❤️🌍

A beautiful historical opera house with a great legacy and continued excellence. Grab tickets for a show extremely early because seats sell extremely fast. Some seats don't actually have a view of the stage so pay attention to which you purchase. The main entrance is the original entrance and opulently decorated. You'll find multiple bars and cafes inside but expect to pay a premium. Staff is great and speaks English.

To say it’s breathtaking would be an understatement. It’s beautiful but also the operas showed here are incredibly executed. Although a bit pricey, highly recommend getting good seats and attending at least one opera. A truly unforgettable experience.

Beautiful Opera House in the heart of Vienna. Seats are comfortable and have a small screen to allow subtitles to be displayed in chosen language. Acoustics are amazing and make sure that you book in advance. Book directly through the Opera House to avoid hidden fees from other vendors. If you want to buy a program it is cash only but the bars will still accept cards.

The opera house is beautiful and the performance was fantastic. Take care to book tickets in advance, otherwise last minute solution is to search the concert ticket sellers on the corner. They are dressed in Mozart time costumes and have the opera badge, so you will not miss them.

If you've ever fancied trying out an opera or a ballet this is definitely for you. Tickets should be bought direct from the opera house & go on sale around 3 months in advance. The building is magnificent. If you're not a fan of Opera or Ballet, I'd recommend the tour of the Opera house. It's not too long, is conducted in several languages and was only €13 or €9 if you're over 62 (I think).
