This was my first hostel experience so I was a little nervous. But it was a really great place and amazing time! The beds were comfortable and the staff very helpful. There is a roomy kitchen and space to eat. It’s a clean and nice place to stay!

I was looking for a local and cozy hostel and Ruthensteiner did not disappoint at all! There are people from all over the world and every age and it was impossible to not connect right away. You get in and feel like at home. There is free great lemonade at the reception and I really appreciated the "pay what you wish" -dinner. The rooms are fitted with electronic, roomcard-controlled lockers and the hostel seems overall very modern and fair in every way. I liked the online check in feature as well, it speed up the check in process on site. The staff is very friendly and helpful and I got to give a shoutout to Thor, who lend me his rain jacket so I could go hiking. Highly appreciated! This will forever be my go to hostel whenever I'll be in Vienna.

Overall great hostel. Great staff and volunteers, incredible atmosphere, the rooms are nice and clean, and the common spaces are nice, especially the ones outside. The kitchen is alright, but the fridges are quite disorganized and your stuff is never where you left it especially when people move their stuff on the cleaning days. Making a system with boxes so it's easy to organize and move stuff around would be helpful.

Great people! Very beautiful hostel. Location was just perfect for walking around, access to tram/metro, food options open till late. The hostel organised some fun activities too and had a gorgeous courtyard. Would definitely stay here again.

Can't wait to get back! EVERYTHING WAS EXCEPTIONAL!! The atmosphere of this hostel, cleanliness (fresh sheets, towels), value for money, quick check-in, all info about the hostel and Vienna at hand, a huge variety of activities to do and integrate guests at the hostel. everything is thought through, one has a private locker in mixed 6-people room with a socket in it(!). Loved the patio (green and quiet) as well as the common room with pillows to sit comfortably. there's no other place I'd rather returned to in whole Vienna, absolutely recommend At times bathroom floor was slightly dirty, but no wonder - it was a 6-people room, can't get everyone to pay attention to cleanliness

I loved this hostel! Huge common area with bar, piano/guitar for practice, a library, lots of board games and activities, nice breakfast (extra), super clean and the lockers were opened with the room key.

I found this Hostel was great for me as a female solo traveller. The staff were super friendly and accommodating and even offered me hot tea on arrival. The room was spacious and clean and they had lockers where you were able to secure any valuables. The room was quiet also as the Hostel is not set on a main road with traffic. I would highly recommend 👌

This is a great hostel to stay at in Vienna! It is quiet at night, but the bar is lively! The beds were very nice, and each had plugs for your devices. The lockers were the best! The best idea is that you can rent a transport ticket! I recommend this hostel to everyone! One of the best I've ever stayed at!

Best hostel I've stayed in hands down. Welcoming staff, beautiful rooms, and great social environment. My favorite part was the option of having a communal meal every night. Having musical instruments available was also a plus. The location is decent, close to good restaurants but a little far from the "city center" (aka the touristy part of Vienna). Overall a great experience and I will certainly stay again in the future.

Four stars, leaning towards three. Pros: quiet, warm atmosphere, and our room (with a full bed and sink) was clean. The room darkening curtains meant a good night of sleep! Appreciated the delicious, in-house gluten free waffles for breakfast. And the bar area was bustling every night without being noisy. A good environment if you want to meet people. Easy location to take public transit around the city. Cons: the quality of breakfast varies with the chef, and on our final day it took 38 minutes to get our whole order (waffles, eggs, and a coffee). We we ended up missing our train to our next destination. Also, the two toilets in our area, serving 5 rooms, did not have hand soap for 3 of the 4 days of our stay. Didn’t point it it at reception - kept assuming they would clean and notice. I would stay here again, but I’d be more vocal about having the little issues solved.

This is a really great place to stay! We’ve been backpacking with our two kids (10 & 13) and they welcomed us with open arms. We had a quiet private room, plenty of sunlight & it was nice and clean. The gardens on the property were a lovely place to start your day with a coffee and a delicious homemade organic breakfast as well as a great place to unwind after a busy day in Vienna. A very inclusive experience all around and I would highly recommend! Thanks all!

This place is cozy. Like suuuper cozy. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Not to mention all the cool people that stayed there too. There are plenty of restaurants in the area that are really good. Definitely worth the price and the stay!

The staff was very nice and efficient. The check in and check out was very quick. The room was clean, and fresh towels were provided. There was also shampoo packets and soap provided in It the room. Which is pretty much all you need. Shower and the toilet was clean. It was also quite quiet during the night. Overall a very nice place!

I had been really looking forward to staying at this location and was disappointed with how hot the rooms were. I have traveled Europe a few times and knew that air conditioning was not a thing however they provide 1 barely working fan. Overall the location and staff were really nice however the staff on a day to Prater seemed annoyed they had to be there hanging out with guests. It's a fine spot to stay just don't expect a normal hostel experience.

Very nice hostel with considerate staff. I had some issue due to which I had to change my rooms and they were very willing to help me with the options and make changing the rooms possible. There’s also a nice breakfast and dinner which leads to lots of social interaction. Only one small comment - the quality of the rooms in the main building are much better than the second building, so perhaps something could be done about that

If you're looking for a hostel in Vienna, look no further! The staff were lovely and friendly, as were the volunteers there. The atmosphere is great - there are activities on every night, lots of games available to play, and a piano and guitars free for anyone to play, though it's not overly noisy. The beds were comfy and the rooms + bathrooms very clean.

A great friendly place. There's a communal kitchen you can use, a bar, and a welcoming communal area. You can also make a donation for an evening dinner if there's a cook in the hostel, or order a vegetarian breakfast. The dormitory we shared had lockers, shower/toilet, was fresh and clean and spacious. The staff were very helpful. The location is a 5 minute walk to the metro station. The hostel is highly recommended.

I had a very pleasant stay and met some good people. The staff is great and very welcoming, the common area is nice for making new friends. Greetings to Pancho and the dutch/Italian girl from the German guy, it was a fun time!

One of the best hostels in the world. Simple and clean rooms with old and chic Austrian style. Beautiful gardens between the rooms. Very kind staff. Grate vibe and activities every night. The only thing that could be better is to replace the old and tattered pillows with comfortable and luxurious down pillows.

I stayed here for one night to visit the Christmas markets. It was a great place to meet fellow travelers while traveling solo. The staff was very friendly and there was a cozy lounge and a bar to relax in the evening. Dinner was served by volunteers which was a "pay as you wish" service.

Hands down my favorite hostel of the trip. The staff and overall vibe of this hostel was top notch. I have stayed at some places where talking to staff members felt like I was putting them out trying to connect and talk. This kills the environment and I might as well stay in a hotel. This place made everyone feel like a family at the bar area and all the volunteers were top notch! I am staying at another hostel and miss the atmosphere at Ruthensteiner a lot! I will miss you all! Rooms: They were comfortable and quiet at night which I enjoy a good nights rest to recharge and be ready to walk the city the next day! The rooms were clean and spacious as well as well lit and ventilated. This place shines in how tidy the rooms are. I especially liked the natural light and windows our room provided. Bikes: This hostel offers bike rentals for 15 EU . Do it! I rode to Wachau and to Bratislava on separate trips and both of these were highlights of my stay! I cannot recommend the Euro Cycle route 6 enough! Location: It is convenient to westbahnhof and also a 20min walk to the museum district.

Wonderful hostel! Definitely a place where you’d go to meet new friends and travel buddies. Place is bustling and I loved the cute art everywhere (posters and even toilet signs). Services/amenities are incredibly diverse - they have a daily transport ticket you can rent affordably, there’s a pay-as-you-wish dinner, paid breakfast options, a bar with happy hours, laundry area, kitchen etc. Beds were also clean and comfy, with plugs and a night lamp for every bed. Only bummer was that it was soooooo cold. We were right next to the heater but somehow it never got warm enough. That said, would still recommend!!!

Wonderful friendly staff who go above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy and has their needs met. The commons are a comfortable hang out space where you can meet people and play some board games or have a cheeky beery during happy hour. Rooms are clean, as are the amenities with hot water & good water pressure to boot! There's a clothes swap and cheap dinners if you're running on minimal dollarydoos too. Highly recommend this home away from home.

The hostel boasts an excellent location near the Westbanhauf terminal, making it highly convenient for travelers. It features a bar and a charming little garden outside, which unfortunately closes at 22:00 in compliance with the city-wide noise regulations. Security measures are top-notch, providing a safe environment for guests. The bar remains open until around 23:00. The cleanliness of both the rooms and bathrooms is well-maintained. The only minor drawback is the absence of curtains or some form of privacy cover on the bunk beds. However, overall, it's a highly commendable hostel.

Cute hostel with a good location close to a couple train stations. Lots of things to do everyday so you can get to know people if you are doing solo travelling. I had gotten a private room with a private bathroom and it was large and clean. Staff are very friendly and the have free lockers to store your luggage on check out day. Really enjoyed my stay here!

Very clean and nice rooms/facilities, and easy to get to other parts of town using public transportation! Employees were very friendly, and there are daily opportunities to get to know other folks at the hostel, but no pressure to join if you’re not feeling inclined. They offer breakfast, which is tasty and makes it easy to get that out of the way before you go exploring! A nice touch is the delicious tea for free in the common area, a great way to warm up when you’ve been out in the cold. Only downside was that my key card did not work to lock my locker (but some others did work).

Sophia, Sebastian, Michael, Mary and all the other staff and volunteers were very welcoming and friendly with all of the people coming in and going out of the hostel. They created a very social and hospitable atmosphere that united a lot of the travellers. All of the facilities were clean and the bedrooms and showers were very nice and comfortable. I strongly recommend that all travellers to Vienna stay at this hostel for an amazing experience at a great price.

What an amazing hostel I got the chance to stay in!! There are only a few hostels left in Europe like this one. The staff was not just nice, they were all GREAT! Super friendly and helpful, always smiling. You can tell that they like working there! The common areas, the kitchen, the garden, the bathrooms, and the bedrooms were not only clean but perfectly designed. Everything helps you to connect with fellow travelers and make new friends. The breakfast is marvelous. The lockers in the room are easy to use and handy. The shower is perfect. The mattress and pillow are super comfy. The kitchen is perfectly equipped. They thought about every single detail and make it better! Thank you, stay the same, you are doing a great job!

Hostel R is a great option for budget travelers in Vienna. I stayed in 2 bed private room with my traveling partner and it had everything we needed. The sink in room was a nice touch and there were plenty of bathrooms and showers nearby. Be aware that the beds are not made, you must stuff your own duvet upon arrival. In addition, there is a lot of hall noice, voices really travel and the doors slamming was disruptive. Overall, I would stay here again, the staff were very friendly and the hostel really offers your typical European hostel experience. It has a decent location near a large transit station and metro stop but it is ~1 mile from the city center.

  • 5/5 Marty K. 5 months ago on Google
Spent a quick two nights as a solo traveler at Ruthensteiner and really enjoyed my experience. Cheap dinners and happy hour made me want to return here to chat with my roomies after a long day of exploring on my own. Location is a bit further from the historical sights but public transit is right around the corner so everything is easily reachable. Everything was super clean and comfy but did notice a few holes in the wall in Room 3 of the annex building. Didn’t impact my stay but would be nice to fix those up!

  • 5/5 Mari A. 5 months ago on Google
3 bunk bed room with one fan which one person aimed it at himself. I took a personal fan so that was no problem. The linen was clean, one bathroom for 6 ppl, near public transport. I packed earplugs and a sleep mask and slept like a baby for 38 bucks a night!

  • 5/5 Vincent V. 6 months ago on Google
It's a very good location since it is close to the Westbanhauf terminal. It has a bar and a small garden outside. The garden is closed at 2200 since it's a city-wide rule to quiet down at that time. Security is good. There's a bar that is open until 2300 or so. The rooms and bathrooms were kept clean. The only thing, is the bunks don't have a curtain or some type of cover. Other than that, it's a really good hostel.

Highly recommend this hostel for your stay while in Vienna! Located within walking distance to the Westbahnhof Station. Definitely grab their transport ticket at the front as it's a great deal in commuting around Vienna. Staff were very friendly and eager to assist with providing any information and tips. Special shout-out to the bartenders Varun and Beth! Will be booking this hostel again when I return in the future. Make sure to check out the bar down the street (Travel Shack) during the weekends for a fun time socializing with fellow travelers

  • 4/5 Quinten C. 8 months ago on Google
Great social but quiet hostel. There's a great social atmosphere in the lounge area and gardens (which close quite early unfortunately), but the actual planned activities don't amount to much of anything (Jenga, Uno, drinking coffee). Location is a little bit out of the way, but the €4 a day hostel transit pass is a great deal!

This was a great and very reasonably priced place to stay for our trip to Vienna. We were able to get a private double for a much lower price than other hostels and hotels, but the stay was just as good, or better! The hostel has great common areas like the kitchen and bar, with free tea and cheap coffee available. They have very helpful staff for getting around the city and the public transport is cheap and plentiful! The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet and close to Westbahnhof Train Station. Great vibes to the place as well.

  • 4/5 golan o. 2 years ago on Google
Great place, good location next to all the public transportation you need, warm and helpful crew, amazing place to meet fellow travelers, sit for a beer in the hostel and then go out. Only one problem, there are no effective curtains on the windows, so the rooms are filled with light at like 6 in the morning, so if you were counting on a long sleep in after a night out it might be a problem. Other than that, great facilities, highly recommended!

  • 5/5 Laurens H. 2 years ago on Google
Great hostel! The rooms, bathrooms and toilets were all very clean. The bar has cheap beer and we met some great people over there. Metro and tram are nearby so it is only 15 minutes to the city centre.

Stayed there for 3 nights in a female dorm. Room was nice and clean, so were the showers and toilet. Staff were very nice and helpful. Comfortable location - close to a main rail and subway station. Things that can be improved: They don't allow access to the hostel's gardens after 8 pm, which is a shame. One of the showers was not comfortable to use as it stopped automatically after several minutes and one had to press the tap to start it again. There is no curtain or similar in the dorm bed to give you some privacy while in the room.

I had a very good time in this hostel. Everything was perfect: common areas, people, staff, room, location. The common areas are really cosy and confortable and there are activities at night so it's really easy to meet other travellers. The patio is really nice also (when it's Sunny...). I will come back to Ruthensteiner if I go back to Vienne for sure !!!

Awesome cheap hostel in a great location. Rooms are good and comfortable, toilet and shower work so you don't need anything else 😅 The kitchen is great and there is a nice garden. All of the volunteers and employees were nice and helpful.

Beautiful Hostel. It just felt like home. The beds were perfectly clean as well as the bathrooms where. The kitchen was fully equipted and there even was a piano and guitarrs. With the metro it is 15 minutes to the city center which is really cool. And there is even a real cool club nearby. I met so many nice people there during my stay. I would really recommend it.

I have been staying in this hostel for 3 nights in August. That was truly an amazing experience. Everything was neat and clean, the room for 6 people was spacious and they have the comfiest beds ever! This place is perfect for solo travelers, close to the station and main attractions of the city. The staff at the reception are friendly and nice people. Thanks for the hospitality, definitely will come back!

One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at by far. Bed were comfortable and all facilities were quite good. Above all the vibe and social aspect of the hostel was top notch, fantastic communal meal and fantastic bar. Location is right next to public transport, so getting around Vienna is easy.

If there are people putting bad reviews, idk what to tell them. What else could u ask? This was a very enjoyable hostel. Clean, fun, lockers provided. Activities on some nights, pay-what-you-wish on others. Kitchen was excellent. Plenty of areas to socialize. Top category hostel. Staff was on point. I would just tell people in mixed dorms to he mindful there r girls in there so people gotta be careful w their bathroom etiquette but that is not the hotel's fault. Would definitely choose this again.

For several days made Ruthensteiner my home in Winter 2020. This is basically a very, very good hostel. It was everything a traveller could possibly want, is extremely cozy and easy to meet people, and the staff is friendly and professional. During my stay there were an absolutely massive number of bar crawls conducted by the volunteers, what felt like every night leading to people loudly entering the dorm during the small hours, waking myself and the poor Spanish woman in the bunk across from me, the two who'd opted for consistently earlier nights. That's my bad for booking an 8-bed dorm, I suppose, and it's not a knock against the hostel itself, which is great; just keep such things in mind, fellow traveller, learn from my mistakes and book a slightly smaller dorm if you desire of your sleep hygiene more surety.

It really is one of the best hostels in the world. I was there a few years ago and can't wait to go back. The staff is super friendly, the guests are lovely, open-minded, and respectful. The Historisches Zentrum von Wien is a 40 minute walk from the hostel. They have awesome bikes you can use. They have really cool showers. I arrived quite early and was greeted in the best possible way, they even let me sleep in the lobby!

Cute hostel, friendly staff with good recommendations for lunch and things to do, clean room. Booked a mixed budget bed, but was upgraded to a private room with the two people I was traveling with. Reception gave us medication for a headache when the drugstore was closed. They have towels, hairdryers, soap, etc, everything you need!

  • 4/5 Yunfei L. 1 year ago on Google
Wonderful time in general, but a minor caveat makes me want to give it a 4.5/5. Pros: Quiet location close to many good eateries. The staff varies in personnel but Michael in particular was kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. The rooms were clean, and they got a lot of things right. the first towel is free, and the lockers were large and electronically locked. The common areas were laid out nicely and had plenty of space for both socialization and quietness. Again, they got a lot right. Cons: The shower and bathrooms in general were very small and thus crowded. The bunk beds in the 4-person rooms really need fixing, as it placed the ends of 2 beds closely enough that it felt like one bed... This made sleeping for a taller person like me pretty awkward since we didn't want to disturb our neighbors. Also, the bunks were hard to climb to.

Great place to stay in Vienna, close to metro / tram stations if you don’t want to walk! Artistic decor and great vibes, very social and good for meeting new friends. Soft beds and clean bathrooms. The social areas include a bar, multiple seating areas, and two gardens accessible from interior doors. Reception staff was friendly, and the price is reasonable for the experience. I’d definitely recommend it!

An absolutely fantastic hostel, one of the best I've ever visited! Staff are super friendly and helpful with directions, events run every evening to meet new travellers or get a hot meal! Very sociable hostel especially as a solo traveler. Everything is clean and your room/locker are accessed via the same key card. It is also situated about 3 minutes walk from westbanhopf which gives you a quick link into the city on the subway! If you're hesitating about booking then do it!!

This hostel is the best I’ve ever been!! It was SO fun, so sociable and great people. They host lots of activities for the day and night. They also give free lemonade, have coffee for low prices and make an amazing breakfast! It tastes soooo good. You will enjoy your stay here very much. Staff are lovely!

loved this hostel. it has a homely feel which made it really easy to connect with others (ideal for a solo traveller). I thought the evening meal was a great idea and had plenty of options at the bar. lots of guidance about what to do in Vienna with detailed instructions, someone always at reception on hand to help and well located near transport, shops and places to eat. really nice garden area to chill in, lots of showers to use and bed was comfy. it was quite hot in the rooms but the hostel recognised that and gave us a fan to help. would've been nice to have a curtain on the bed for some added privacy, especially as my bed was next to the set of lockers which kept being opened and closed but I still had an amazing experience which is why I believe it deserves the top rating! would definitely come back

Really good hostel. Friendly and helpful staff, who help with travel, rent bikes and put on activities. A shared dinner in the evening and a really social vibe. It's lively and friendly with a busy bar without being a raucous party place. Really enjoyed my stay and would recommend.

Perfect hostel. I stayed in renovated room, it was very clean, spacious, and the bathrooms luxurious. It was easy to meet people. I loved the idea that the hostel cooks a meal twice a week and you can just join in if you want to. Also the service was fantastic. I lost my ring and the hostel took the time and energy to send me it by post!

The atmosphere at Ruthensteiner is awesome! The common areas were well laid out with pillows, couches, musical instruments, games and a bar. Everyone and the volunteers there are very social and welcoming. The rooms were spacious and clean. They offer a dinner at night for a small donation which really adds a homey feel to the whole place. I loved my stay so much! Thank you for having me :-)
