Came in at 930am on a Saturday, the place was empty. Around 10am, more customers started to come in. The place is rustic and warm at the same time. My group was 5 pax, and there weren’t any big tables. The tables are rathe small. The service was good but the eggs and bacon were excellent. The coffee is decent. A great place to start your day or relax in the afternoon. As we were leaving, I believe Mr Hawelka’s son, came out to greet us and gave us fist pumps! This sealed the 5-star!

Avoid - Honest review A place with rich history but ruined by 21st century manners Really nice and cool original decor however everything is bad The rudest and arrogant customer service as they think tourists would come for it's history. Food and cakes are sub par, dry and just packed with sugar. Coffee was dreadful. Please note: everyone sit down has to order a drink or food so you can't share and CASH ONLY, not cheap, quite expensive. (Not written anywhere, and they don't care) Would not recommend...won't be coming back here ever. IG @Jeanwonguk

Needed coffee and cake to warm up after long city walk. Terrace was busy and full, even on cold day. Inside was busy but managed to find a good table. Service was slow, expected since there were too few staff. Toilets were horrible. Coffee was average. Apple strudel was really tasty and so was the cheese strudel. Decor was old style and very worn fabric on the seats. Maybe the distressed and antique look is part of this cafe, but for me it needs refurbished. Prices were reasonable. Won’t be returning in a hurry

We stopped by for a break from walking and found a tasty surprise. Goulash soup and vegetable main were both delicious for lunch. We also tried the apple tart which was not too sweet and very good. Would recommend and go again. Cash only.

The mood was very cozy and old fashioned. I tried to feel Vienna in the fast. The most interesting thing is its history and they keep their style. Coffee was fresh~!!

Old and dingy. 50% of the tables had reservation signs on them. Staff (wearing ill fitting old worn out suits) did not help to seat. Apparently you just take whatever place you want. I ordered the strudel, as recommended by Google reviews, don't bother. It was soft and mushy. I'm certain they microwaved it. Coffee was just okay. €10 euro... Meh.

On a five day trip, I’ve been to this cafe twice. It’s one of those original cafés that’s been run over generations. They make the best chocolate cake and apple strudel. You also get the famous melange. The place is always busy and crowded after 4pm. But you can wait for a couple minutes and a table will be available. There is extra seating outside as well. They only used to accept cash up until a few years ago. They’ve started accepting card now which is a bonus!

Pretty decent coffee and delicious cake. Little bit pricey but that's expected of how central it is. Coffee cups are cute, albeit a little small. Cake was the highlight, definitely worth a visit for the cakes alone. The interior decor is very retro - there is real character to this coffee house. There is no alternative milk option, otherwise its a cosy little place tucked away from the main road.

I believe it's my fav Cafe in the world. Amazing vibe, best place for every mood. Loud and peaceful. Coffee is fine. Remember to order The Buchteln 😍 - cute sweet rolls made of yeast dough, filled with plum Powidl jam. Yummy!

Great coffee, great Apfel Strudel. However, when every table is occupied, be prepared to wait a bit for your order to be taken and to be delivered. It is expected; the staff is non-stop running through the tables and providing the necessary.

It's a nice historical Café where a lot of famous artists used to go. They still have those cool old newspaper holders. I had a Apfelstrudel which tasted good.

A great place with a special magnificent atmosphere! We have ordered a hot chocolate, coffee with whipped cream, apple strudel and chocolate cake. To be frank, food and drinks are ordinary in taste but the place itself and its vintage vibe make it 100 times tastier :) Highly recommend visiting this place!

A staple of the Viennese Kaffeehaus culture. Definitely worth a visit to experience a time when artists and writers frequented Vienna's nightly coffee houses Try the Buchteln pastry after 8pm it's a treat you don't want to miss out. It's what they are famous for. And tastes delicious warm and with a hot coffee.

Very nice and lovely authentic place to enjoy a (late) breakfast. Super to see, go inside and take a moment to breath it in. Also a special mention for the waiter , he's there to stay and blends in perfectly. Enjoy ...

Cosy cafe on a busy side street Excellent coffee Good value wine Friendly service that was slow due to crowd size, so be prepared to wait a little We will 100% be returning “Cafe Hawelka, in Vienna’s prestigious first district, is so well loved in Vienna that it has been featured in documentaries and in songs such as Jö Schau by the late Austrian singer Georg Danzer, and Trans Europa Express by German band Kraftwerk. Opened in 1939 by newlyweds Leopold and Josefine Hawelka, it was especially popular with Austrian poets, musicians and politicians in the 1960s and 1970s. The owners worked in the cafe well into their nineties, and it’s still family-run today.”

Good desserts, you can taste the traditional here😊 But the service for me personally could use some help. There were many people so to seat all of them they wanted to seat on or table unknown woman which Im not impressed by. They rush you to eat and pay(which btw is only cash, they don’t tell you neither it’s written somewhere) so they can let in someone else.

This place didn't look like it was teeming with history in the outside. But on one rainy December evening, this has been a solace, comfort, and warm hugs all at the same time. Me & my cousin were suckers for history & culture and just sitting there, with servers in their dapper black costumes (I dont know how to say that from french to english, i'm sorry) going around, we seemed to have transformed to another place, where people come together to discuss, enjoy the moments and all over some good food, beer, and desserts. We ordered the frankfurters with the best baked bread I ever had in Vienna. I'm telling you, I ordered the same in different areas afterwards, but nothing beat the bread from Hawelka. And as 1st timers, I thought we need to eat with fork & knife so I asked the server. He told me that I should it the local way & explained it to me, without making me embarassed about it how we should eat. I don't mind eating with my hand, and I'm glad we had the solid recommendation from him to do just that! :) And yes, the Frische buchteln! Where should I start? It was a plate of goodness, warm hugs, and home. It was so soft, and I wanted to recreate it. All in all, it was a lovely experience. I wish to go back here again and have frankfurters and buchteln again

Authentic place where time is frozen. Nevertheless it was fully booked the atmosphere was comfy and pleasant. The staff is very helpful, they saved me with a charger. Waiting was not long at all as for business. Very tasty apple strudel + nice coffe about 10 euros. Tea is ok, casual bags.

This café is about as iconic as it gets; an absolute must-visit, if you’re in Vienna! Yes, the furniture is worn out, yes the menu is old and doesn’t have vegan offers, or things such as decaf coffee, BUT IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY, which is something some people don’t seem to understand. It’s all about keeping things as authentic and traditional as possible, in attempt to maintain that old Viennese flair. I absolutely loved every minute of my 2 visits here, and the food was delicious. Highly recommend the Topfenstrudel and Gulaschsuppe. I will 100% be back!

We ordered Wiener Melange. However, Cafe Latte was brought. Order knowing this. Apple Strudel came as Apple Pie. There was no cream. The waiter served by banging the tray on the table.

How much history can a Cafe send out? Herr Ober - is as normal as it has been back in the days. We had some coffee and a Sachertorte and everything was delicious. Absolutely a recommendation, but be aware it is a small and crowded place. Therefore take it is easy.

Kawa i wypieki smaczne, wystrój wnętrza klimatyczny. Niestety kelner robił wrażenie, że mu przeszkadzamy, nie podał karty, nie przyniósł rachunku, po wszystkim domagał się napiwku, a gdy go nie otrzymał, odchodząc powiedział: „za drogo”.

Café Hawelka is the original, the one and only! One of the most famous and beautiful cafés in Vienna, Hawelka was once a bohemian hangout. A popular song (Georg Danzer’s “Jö Schau”) says you could even spot a naked guy here! Today it’s mostly packed with tourists and living of its past glory, but things are quieter early morning, later in the evening, and when you are lucky. This used to be a place that was open late at night, where the owners would hang out with regulars and other guests. Notable patrons included André Heller, Elias Canetti, Arik Brauer, Hilde Spiel, H.C. Artmann, Konrad Bayer, Oswald Wiener, Friedrich Torberg, Heimito von Doderer, Hans Weigl and others. Today the coffee and food are average but the atmosphere is still great. Once upon a time, the owner, Leopold Hawelka used to sit next to the entrance. Keep an eye out for the delicious jam-filled pastries (Buchteln) served in the evening.

(Translated by Google) Cozy and historic café in the center of Vienna. It has a terrace, but the most beautiful thing is the interior, wooden decoration, old chairs, old clocks, a poster / photo from some decades ago ... They do not have a letter, the waiter informs you of what they have, usually coffees and chocolate, and eating cakes. I have to say that I liked both the coffee and the sacher cake. On the contrary, they only accept cash (Hello, 21st century? Austrians get a little heavy with not accepting a card, it is the 3rd time so far this day), on top of that the waiter has brought the bill, we have overpaid, because we did not have the exact amount, to take the ticket and the coins, and everything to the bag, has gone without even returning the change.

It's just cult, the equipment is really from the 50s, I guess, even the lighting. You really feel like you are in this time, like with a time machine. The waiters are still an original always friendly and well dressed. In the past, there were even doodles by Georg Danzer on the walls. The outdoor seats are also very cozy. The prices are a bit high, but that's why it's a cult place. I hope it will never change, there is no such thing a second time. It is always a nice experience to come to Hawelka. Cafe is rich in history and a cosy find, however they wouldn’t allow our party of two to only order one drink which was peculiar, and they only accept cash which is advertised. So we had to run around trying to find a cash point whilst the waiter kept our wallet.

Very old fashion cafe in Vienna. None of the modern fancy stuff. Good English speaking servers. Plum cake we had was fresh and warm.

Beautiful coffee.. this place is not for the faint hearted newbie traveller. There is no menu, service is true to local culture. Amazing coffee, good strudel and cake but wouldn't scream about the sweets. Has a lively and cosy atmosphere and would recommend for a short stop!

This place used to be much nicer. It got quite touristic in the meantime and as soon as you finish your coffee, they take the cup away and keep asking you if you want something else every two minutes or so, so that you'd leave and make place for new customers.

An absolute classic and a legend in Vienna. You better don’t go there though in the hope to stay for long or you’ll constantly need to consume as it is a very popular place.

Worth the wait if you haven't been to a real cafe house in Vienna. The strudel (both apple and cheese) were great. Personal preference was the ape though ?. Friendly staff. Be sure to have cash.....

Very cosy place, full of posters and friendly stuff speaking good English. Food and coffee very good. The place is super crowded (we were sharing the table with another couple) but in my opinion worth to wait!

This place was recommended by our tour director. He did not lead us astray. I had the Hawelka Menü, double espresso witha shot of rum. It will light you up. Good stuff. Also had a piece of the chocolate cake. Very good as well

The breakfast and the location are very very nice, but 20 Euros is too much for 2 slices of cake and 2 coffee. Furthermore the staff was not kind and friendly.

An outstanding coffee roaster. Right away I was asked how I typically prepare coffee, and what my roast preference was. The gentleman who was helping me was dedicated to making sure I purchased the right coffee beans for me. In addition, I also purchased the most well prepared and flavorful espresso I tasted during my time in Vienna. I will happily return.

A verymuch exaggerated cafe. I did not see anything special there. We went in but we could not draw the attentions of the waiters there so walked out without having drunk anything. Do not waste your time there. There are better cafes in Wien.

The waiter didn't give us menu until we asked, he was really rude in general and everything seemed like a problem to him. Once he knew we wanted to pay, it took him forever to actually let us pay. I expected much more from this place. Felt like we weren't welcome there because our first language wasn't german. I wouldn't waste time in this place again, there are many different places in Vienna that are actually worth visiting.

The Cafe Hawelka is a true Vienna classic, only steps from the Stephansdom, on one of the lateral streets that cross the Graben. It has remained unchanged for decades, and it is like stepping into another dimension. The menu is limited, and substitutions are unthinkable. Good coffee, and depending on the time of the day, a place to stay for long lazy reading breaks, or to move along to give way to the eager tourists that heard about it from the tourist guides. Those are not my favourite days! The servers are polite, but do not expect any of the obsequious friendliness you may find in North America. This is dignified, efficient service. I do not particularly enjoy their food menu, so I would not give it five stars. For me, this is a place for a coffee and a chat. LOVE the little sofas, and today, I was lucky that they were available!

Old and beautiful café in the city center. You have to try the Apfelstrudel and Buchteln (After 18:00) fresh from the oven and they are AMAZING.

A historical place. A cafe that hosted many celebrities in the past. As for taste, I think it's not a place to be exaggerated.

No need to wait to long on Sunday evening. Sacher torte (EUR 5.8) is great, and the price is reasonable. I didn't order drink and ask for a glass of water. The waiter is busy and act fast. Standard service with acceptable taste and price. Worth a try.

Café Hawelka is one of the best coffee houses in Vienna. Personnel were friendly, service is relatively fast and there were not a huge groups of people and queue at the entrance. Comparing with other coffee houses I have in Vienna, their coffee quality and also Apfelstrudel is great. The heartbreaking story of Leopold and Josefine Hawelka and artists and authors who have been here... You should definitely visit Hawelka enjoy and feel the atmosphere!

Really sad that we weren’t able to their breakfast menu so we only had limited options from their snack menu. We tried both the regular and spicy sausages with their signature bread, mustard, and horseradish. At first we were surprised that it’s considered finger food, so it was pretty cool and new at the same time. The bread was tough and dry so we didn’t really enjoy that. However, the sausages were quite good! The rest of my family just had regular cappuccinos and found them okay. I tried the einspänner, the world famous coffee and a signature Viennese coffee. Enjoyable actually! It’s strong but the whipped cream mellowed things down although I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I had tried their version with the milk AND whipped cream since the coffee itself is strong. And you’ll get overwhelmed by the amount of coffee they offer! Amazing to witness their age old coffee culture first hand. Interiors are interesting!! So much history ingrained within the four corners. It has so much character and charm at the same time. Enjoyed looking at all the signages and vintage photographs and posters. Love that touch!

An amazing experience that I recommend to anyone visiting Vienna. Beware, you might not find a place to sit, go as early as possible. It was very atmospheric (both the environment and the staff). There is a story to this café. A lot of coffee options have alcohol in it, which just adds to the atmosphere. We had Sachr cake (very good, not too sweet), regular espresso and coffee with cognac all quite good (not many good coffees we have found in Vienna unfortunately). Highly recommend.

Loved the ambience of this place. Service was very good. I had one of the best apple strudel and sachertorte. The cream was just melt in mouth and flavours in both were awesome. Please try it if you are around the area.

Had a lovely coffee and apple strudel around 1pm on a Monday. Apple strudel was the best strudel I’ve ever had! They were very lovely and attentive (especially as someone from Australia/Poland who can’t speak the language). The outdoor seating and umbrella’s were fantastic, even for a 35 degree day. Would definitely come back! 🫶

delicious apple strudel and great service. its a beautiful cafe conveniently located in the middle of Stevensplatz. loved the apple strudel and thought the melange was decent— but the silverware was gorgeous!! place also seemed to have an extensive history and i love seeing a family-run business last through the years.

Very good coffee, like the cheese strudel sweets, charming and rustic atmosphere.

Especially the atmosphere is amazing because this place is a historical cafe. This is the third wave of the same family who runs the cafe. I ate Apfelstrudel and drunk cappuccino. These were both amazing. Do not forget to order apfelstrudel with sahne.

The food and ambiance were great. Then for some reason the waiter decided to scam me and overcharge. Noted.

Stopped in for an apfelstrudel. It was warm and delicious. The atmosphere was really nice, felt like a time capsule. Located just off of stephensplatz.

A cafe with a lot of history. Don’t expect brand new shiny interior and modern sweets. Come here for legendary deserts and a story told by every worn out chair and every scratch on the wall.

You definitely come here for the particular ambiance that you can only find in viennese coffee places, more than for the food and drinks that were good nonetheless. I didn't expect to find any, but I wish that we could find oat milk in this kind of beautiful places nowadays.

Brown Wien cafe with a fascinating history. Expect some time to get a table. Is possible to book a table the day before, if the waiters like you

Traditional coffee shop experience. Don’t forget cash! Simple menu. We had a breakfast of boiled eggs, bread and coffee. Don’t come here if you want a Starbucks experience and can’t master a small amount of German. Come here for the authentic Austrian coffee shop experience.
