My very first night in Vienna happened to fall on Austria day and many places were closed. I was eager to get out and eat some Apple strudel however, and stumbled upon this gem. Beautifully made confections and cakes. The decor of the store and the window display was beautiful. Staff was kind and friendly and helped me pick out some delicious treats. The almond cake was my favorite! I love marzipan and you can taste the almond meal in the cake as well. The house specialty was light and creamy chocolate cake. The apple strudel was served warm and packed with juicy apples. The only negative is that the strudel pastry was soggy and really brought the dish down. There is only one type of vegan cake on offer but luckily it's a delicious vegan chocolate cake full of flavor and my daughter loved that it came with marzipan chocolate as that's her favorite.

SERVICE is key. I used to take my daughter here because she liked the window displays and the climb on the dinky steep stair case leading to nook and cranny mezzanine seating. I stopped taking her when I finally accepted that the service wasn’t going to improve. To begin with, it was never something you’d write home about. The staff usually looked bored and disinterested, uninvested in their work. But for me, the final straw was when I paid for a bill of just under 22€. I gave the male server a 5€ cash tip. So imagine my confoundment as my daughter and and I were getting our coats and the server bellowed out to his supervisor that we didn’t give him anything. He didn’t do anything extra or worthy of anything above the obligatory 10%. So to say a 23% tip was nothing was asking for it. What an unappreciative, entitled piece of... Nonetheless, we said our thank yous again politely and left quietly. Hence this review. Disgusting and disgraceful behaviour. That man either needs a heap of extra training or he needs to be fired because he has cost and will continue to cost the business.

Had the same experience that happened to someone one week ago. I was by myself and saw the table seat left when I entered, but the waiter gave that seat to the couple who was sitting in the bar table. I could understand that, and got notified that I have only bar seat left, and sat there(eventually, there was one more floor upstairs.) Many left after I sat there but he never offered me those seats and let me stay there. I was already uncomfortable but the most uncomfortable part is that he asked me while paying ‘do you want to add a tip which is 10% from your payment?’ You ask a tip and even suggesting the exact amount of it?? Even after that unworthy service?? I hope they don’t behave like that especially to tourists. Other than that, the food was very good. ———— I am so happy with my visit again today at second floor. Their service was amazing. Thank you.

Elegant but relaxed cafe offering a wide range of excellent cakes and drinks. We had to wait 10mins for a table for 4 but in no time at all we were being well looked after and tucking into some of the best sweet treats! We were so comfortable that it was hard to leave 😀

The cake was good, so was the tea. The place itself is very good looking. But I find the behavior of the staff not the most professional one. I understand that if it’s full, you have to wait. However, it would be great if someone would come and say something to you and not just ignore all the people waiting to be seated. My 2 cents is that an “we’re sorry, we’re full at the moment, please wait until seats become available” goes a long way.

Before you head here make RESERVATIONS. This iconic establishment is the quintessential place to enjoy the 3 C’s, a cake, coffee/tea and conversation. The interior from the moment you walk in it’s old classy charm. The first and second level places you can sit and have long conversations while enjoying Viennese style cake with coffee. The core is fit for a king queen, while not being stuffy for the common people. The service we had was quick and efficient. Sat in the dining room on the second level, and it was exquisitely beautiful. Come here for a special occasion, or in the bustling city of Vienna.

The ambiance is very nice, especially on the top floor with the live piano playing. The service staff were great. However, the menu selection is not very accommodating to people with dietary restrictions, in spite of a very large selection of pastry and cake choices. I have two dietary restrictions, and there was literally nothing on the menu I could eat. It is great that Austria is a country with requirements to list food allergens in restaurant menus. However, too many restaurants are not taking this as an opportunity to offer menu items free of allergens. If you go through the effort to identify the allergens, please make the extra effort to reduce the number of allergens in your food. My wife has no culinary training, but she makes amazing desserts that are free of allergens, so this is not hard to do. People with allergies are a growing group in the 21st century who deserve to be accommodated rather than excluded.

Probably the best dessert in Vienna. The ‘Gerstner torte’ was super creamy and delicious, without being too sweet. The double espresso that came with it was an interesting blend, too. We were lucky to find a spot right away. Be prepared for a long waiting time to get a table. The store has two floors, with the second one being its flagship space. Beautiful decoration, creating a cozy and elegant environment.

Absolutely gorgeous and stunning cafe!!! This is a 3-story cafe with the 1st level being the shop. We got a table on the 3rd floor. The ambiance is perfect for having a coffee and a slice of cake. The staff are very nice and professional. We ordered a beef tartar, a late, an Anton Gerstner kaffee, and a slice of Sacher cake and our check came out to $48. Definitely check this place out, it's worth waiting in line.

Do not be fooled by the "historical aura". The glory days are gone long time ago. Arrogant personnel, know very little about the things they baking and sells. Taste of cakes is difficult to describe, actually it is none existing, you could chew a plastic with the same success. On top of that some cakes are not fresh (I am saying it in very polite way).

Everything we tasted was good, however, the service wasn't. It gives you the impression that it functions as a "fast food", they want you to get out fast, they don't want to be bothered after you're served. I'd recommend choosing something else.

We visited this restaurant to have some cups of coffee. At the beginning, we sat at our table and had been waiting for 5-7 minutes and thought that maybe we need to order by ourselves so we asked the personal and unfortunately, the staff member answered very unfriendly that he will come to our table to take an order. As we had been waiting for 15 minutes, no one came to our table. It's sad that we couldn't enjoy the great atmosphere because of the greedy personal. We left because we couldn't wait more.

We were waiting in line on the stairs to get a table and there was one couple in front of us. There was one free table and waitress was just looking at us for 5 minutes before she decided to give them that table. We were next and we saw another couple leaving their table and  went their so they can pass through because we were blocking their way out, and behind us were like 10 people on the stairs waiting. The waitress started yelling at us that we must wait until she cleanes the table and looked at us like we killed somebody! It's not problem at all to wait, we were waiting, but we had to move because this people couldn't get out. She behaved so awful that we lost the wish to stay there and to be served by such unprofessional person. No one comes in restaurant to be yelled at, she had to hold her horses for herself. If she said it politely it would be really ok, it's completely understandable, but yelling at guests is not the way! Unfortunately we didn't have chance to taste what we came for, but because of that person 1 star.

Beautiful cafe with the Viennese decor you must see! Ordered a melange and a raspberry slice and just chilled and read. Laid back and comfortable with great natural light. Really enjoyed it and the service is great too! Best place to chill after a walk in Albertina or before your Opera shows.

We had coffee and cake (two different cakes). Everything was fresh and tasty, coffee very good too. Highly recommend the house “signature” cake. Above all, beautiful environment, great service with a smile (willing to take souvenir photos of customers even!) Absolutely fantastic experience. Like going back in time of imperial Vienna - and without the queues!

Atmospheric place with classic interior and cuisine. The cake was delicious and filling. But the waiters were especially striking and memorable. Despite the fact that there was always a line of visitors in the cafe, they always behaved positively, friendly, openly and even empathetically. Special thanks to the waiter who loves dogs :)

Overall: not a great price : quality ratio. The cake was quite mediocre, tasted a bit dry. The apfelstrudel was good but doesn't come with vanilla sauce (costs 2 EUR extra) Coffee tasted good but a double espresso will cost you more than 5 EUR

Excellent location and environment. You may have to wait a bit to get in the upstairs restaurant. Cakes, coffee and warm food is excellent. However only 3 stars because it took almost an hour to get the waiters attention and then subsequently to pay. (Waited for the bill for 20-30 minutes alone after asking for it.) The waiting times on the staff put a bit of a dent on the experience but would still recommend as there are not many places like these.

Best apple strudel I have ever tried. The dough was so thin, almost invisible, a lot of soft apples. Not too sweet. Just perfect. The service was great too. Esterhazy cake was not so impressive, still good mix of tastes.

Amazing experience, we had to come twice in family of 3 to confirm it is our preferred place in Vienna, and taste everything! There is space there, you do not feel like eating too close to the next table. Service was examplary both times. Choice of pâtisserie is great and very tasty, special mention for the marsipan cake! Decoration is amazing, Old romantically luxury rooms with paintings where you feel comfy and like a king.

Went to this Cafe twice. Had their apple & cherry strudel. Both were absolutely wonderful. However, the service was terrible. The gentleman at the check out counter was very rude both time we visited the Cafe. This place gets 5 stars for their strudel but if I was able to give them zero stars for terrible customer service I would.

Had high expectations but ending up being my worst experience in Vienna. 24 EUROS for 2 strudels. COMPULSORY TIP OF 25% added to the bill which was unexpected. I was not pleased with the service but the tip was compulsory despite discussion with the waitress. The waitress offered sauce with the strudel but did not make any mention that that was at the cost of 3 euros per strudel which was half the price of the strudel itself. This was not mentioned at all in the menu. I was also short-changed when paying for the bill and the waitress was dismissive and rude when I pointed out that that was the case with no apologies.

One of the most beautiful cafes in Vienna with unique, luxurious interior. Having lunch on the 3rd floor, it feels like you’re sitting in the imperial palace. Usually, places like this are super touristic and thus service isn’t good; however, their Slovak waiter is so welcoming that he just makes the whole atmosphere and you want to return. I wish all the waiters in Vienna to be like him!

I always come to Gerstner every time I’m Vienna, however the last time wasn’t too pleasant because of quite unprofessional stuff. I wanted to pay in a bar for my order, however the waitress didn’t come to me. After I stood up and went to the desk to pay by myself, she was not smiling and insisted to give her a tip. I always give tips, however I don’t like to feel pressured to do so, and the prestige of the place seems to be much lowered due to that fact, since it’s not polite to ask for a tip. The waitress is blonde and seems to be polish. However I’m still giving 4 stars for previous positive experience. Cakes are delicious, especially walnut cake.

Service was horrible, there was a skinny guy with mustache who is by far the rudest waiter that I have ever seen, he was also mad at his colleagues and talking to them loudly, and was so aggressive even talking to us. When we paid the bill we decided not to tip him because the service was literally horrible, he asked for a tip saying that the service was not included, we told him “we are aware of that, it’s just that the service was not good, we think you didn’t treat us well, you were not nice talking to us”, and this is what he said “ I don’t like the way you talk to me either!”. The place and the food were really good, the coffee was okay, but dealing with rudeness totally ruined our experience.

Downstairs and the first floor are pure kitsch, and (in my opinion) to be avoided. But some might love the Disneyworld-ish atmosphere. Once you climb up one more flight of stairs to the “belle étage,” the chief story of the house, things are really beautiful. You find yourself in the luxurious apartments of Palais Todesco which had been built in the early 1860s for the Jewish family of Baron Eduard von Todesco. (Be aware that the “Belle étage” in the past was closed during the summer months.) Cakes and pastries taste good here, but what sets them apart is their looks! It’s definitely a spot for those who love to Instagram their food.

The waiter was formally friendly, but when we had to reorder a position immediately after ordering, it was said with much less friendliness, “Daaas will be difficult. I have already entered that into the cash desk ”. Sorry, in such a café, where you pay around 12 € per person for simple cakes with coffee, I expect a little more flexibility. Unfortunately, 2 out of 3 pieces of cake were not fresh either. The decoration (cream) was flattened and the cake tasted after 3 days in the showcase. (Translated by Google) Thanks to the very fast, uncomplicated and friendly delivery service, my parents were able to celebrate their golden wedding with the delicious house cake that we are so familiar with! Thank you - especially in the current time, which is characterized by restrictions, it is good to enjoy a piece of Viennese tradition in the usual perfection! Thank you dear Gerstner team for continuing and sweetening the day for us or even saving yourself with your speed !!!!

Great café in front of Opera House. Tasty cakes, good service and not so expensive as other places. We're really like this place.

(Translated by Google) Absolutely to avoid ... Rude and rude staff, nothing exceptional cakes and hot chocolate that cannot even be defined. (Original) Da evitare assolutamente...Personale scortese e maleducato, torte niente di eccezionale e cioccolata calda che tale non si può nemmeno definire.

If you would to eat good deserts you should go to another cafe! Nothing special in food and drinks. But very cost atmosphere, a nice view from the windows on the 2nd floor and great staff!;)

An authentic place to have coffee, tea, champagne or dessert in the heart of Vienna, located a few steps away from the opera house. We were there in December, the place was packed, people were queuing to find tables. Overall, it was lovely to see how authentic and artistic the place is with hand-painted art all over the ceiling in a gilded salon style. I wasn't impressed much with the variety of cakes we ordered neither the friendliness of their staff.

Cakes and service are nice. But so disappointed the main hall is not open for the summer until September. The area we seat in just a Normal cafe decoration.

Absolutely loved this place. The staff is very friendly, the place is beautifully decorated and the food is also great :)

Excellent service: waiter spoke English very well; melange was delicious and can be made vegan, too (soya or almond milk as options). There’s a wide variety of cakes on the menu which I’ve yet to try. Will certainly come back, especially for the chill vibe and beautiful decor of the upstairs cafe.

This place exceeded expectations. Friendly staff, amazing atmosphere and a great strudel and coffee on nice porcelain plates. Watched and listened to the opera through the window from the Opera House on top of that. Couldn't have been better!!!

Worst hot chocolate ever, including those from random automats. They somehow manage to mix warm milk and Cacao powder and make something that tastes worse than either. The small desserts were not good as well.I would not have any of these even if it was for free, but they decided to go and sell these for outrageous prices even compared to other touristy places. Would never go again.

I had so so experience. The shop and atmosphere is nice, deeserts are looking good, I had only one dessert and I was disappointed. Vanilla cream cake/slice was super sweet. Maybe too sweet for me. The waiters were not so professional and elegant. Need to give them second chance.

Great coffee house by the opera, steeped in history. The name and success are bringing crowd, especially at the end of the day and weekends (I recommend booking!) but it's worth it, the pastries and homemade creations are delicious.

We booked a table in the morning intending to go for breakfast, when we arrived we were seated on the dining area on the 2nd floor, we were told breakfast menu is only available on the first floor! Given the place was full, we just ordered coffee and what they call sandwiches on their menu, but in fact it was a mini flat bread. Very beautiful place. Make you have book a table in advance and ask for the relevant seating area for your intended meal!

Wonderful atmosphere, having a slice of Sacher here is a unique experience. The service is fast and accurate. Prices are proportional to the quality of the products and of the service. I didn't appreciate much the sarcastic tone of the lady at the shop below when I didn't understood that I had to go upstairs to order (it was my first time there and I didn't know how things work). Fortunately, the kindness of the rest of the staff really surprised me. I would recommend anyone to stop here!

The place has the best atmosphere and service I’ve ever seen in Vienna. Mr. Wolfgang a special and big THANK YOU for being so kind with us today (01/11/22). Everything was perfect with the Apfelstrudel and other yummy things we ordered but your service during the time we stayed there was impressive. I really appreciate and I hope to be there soon enjoying great moments again. It’s not every day in Vienna you can have a waiter with a smile on his face all the time, being so kind taking pictures and also showing an additional room which was not open to the public on this date. To summarize, 10/10!

A photogenic place with nice stuff and good coffee. You have to wait in a queue for a while to get a seat. The cakes are fresh but extremely sweet for my taste... Would recommend to order black coffee or black tea with them, don't repeat my mistake ordering sweet coffee))

Amazing, festive atmosphere. Whole experience super classy and elegant. We ate Sacher, Klimt cake, coffee with alcohol and hot chocolate which was the best I had in my life. Very nice staff. Rooms were so beautiful, it was nice to see this 175 years old tradition and enjoy it.

Lovely interior & super friendly service but even more beautiful cakes! Downstairs cake & pastries to take away but we sat at the champagne on the 1st floor. Great champagne & wine selection by the glass but our highlight was the amazing fluffy apple strudel & also soft cheese strudel topped with vanilla sauce / custard - the most heavenly mouthful ever! Loved every bite & can’t wait to try other cakes / sandwiches in the future.

There were four people visiting this establishment. I recommend it for drinks and dessert. There was a little wait when we arrived at 12. Food and drinks were served in a timely manner, and plated well. Great ambience, good seating and service. I'd visit again if the chance is given. Warning: this establishment is not wheelchair accessible.

Food: I ordered their signature drink & cake, which were alright, not the best. The cake was soft, layered mousse chocolate with a biscuit type base. I think their signature drink name was called Bellorini, quite delicious. Cost: The food & drinks were a bit overpriced for a cafe in the city Service: - great service. Even though it was full, we were seated in a reasonable amount of time. - they can recommend some delicious treats. Did not stay there in their rooms.

Gorgeous interiors and great pastries. Try to get a spot at the second floor - the space is next level, so sophisticated, they even have a self-playing piano. Friendly service and excellent traditional Viennese cakes.

We went to 6 different cafes during our visit in Vienna and I must say, this is my favorite cafe. The decor is beautiful and the different rooms are unique. We enjoyed our time spent in this beautiful cafe. The service is impeccable. We will definitely be back. **Visited this cafe in January of 2023.**

I had been here a few times. In the 2nd floor you need a reservation. It is a very beautiful elegant Cafe /Restaurant. They have lots of selections of delicious cakes. It is also good to have a small business meeting here. In case you have a visitor, this is the best place. They have a good service and lots of tourist are coming to this place, so you really need a reservation. Online reservation is very fast to do.

The café boasts a prime location with stunning interior decor. It's a great spot to savor iconic Austrian cakes and coffee drinks. Even when it's busy, the beautifully presented dishes and neatly served cupfuls uplift your mood. I had a wonderful time. Thank you! :)

The dining room is stunning: we are inside a well preserved little palace. Service is friendly (unlike the typical local coffee house), cakes are good (but not excellent). The best time to go there and avoid waiting is in the morning as it opens early.

We had a light breakfast with some mid-morning cake 🍰. The cake is very good, not too sweet. Our favorite is the Gerstner Torte, but the Haus Torte was also very nice. The service is excellent. Very professional and courteous. The ambiance is opulent. Can only highly recommend Gerstner.

The staff was exceptionally polite, welcoming, professional, and warm, which made us feel right at home. As non-German speakers, we appreciated the staff's efforts to speak slowly and clearly, making communication easy and pleasant. Despite not having a reservation, they went out of their way to find us a table and accommodate us, which was greatly appreciated. The quality of the coffee and desserts was simply amazing, and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The restaurant itself is also stunning, adding to the already lovely atmosphere.

Seems to be a very unpopular view, but this has to be an overpriced place that only lives from the hype and attention from all the tourists passing by. 3 types of strudels, average at best. The taste, not the price. The price has to be among the highest in Vienna. If you hope to get the premium service, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there is an attitude that goes with the service. Not my thing. Oh, and also, the tap water is €1.5 / glass. Don't take my word, go check for yourself

I had a fantastic time at this charming café. The vintage design, delicious cakes, and a view of the Opera make it a perfect spot. The staff is friendly, but reservations are a must to avoid waiting.

Very good food and beautiful venue (beside the dark lobby on the 2nd floor that ruins the historical beauty of the place). Globally kind staff, however it was disappointing to notice the lack of honesty coming from one of the waitresses. She initially correctly charged 10% tip as agreed, but since I could not pay with my phone, I went back to the table to grab a card, once back I was surprise to see a different price on the machine, but since I was not sure about it I paid without asking any question. However my expression must have looked doubtful because she immediately started to be chatty, and I felt the did it to divert my attention from the receipt. only afterward, once I was out and away from the restaurant, since the doubt persisted I checked the receipt, and she indeed had increased the tip amount while I went for my card….

I had dinner there and the place is just lovely and cozy. The portions of the cake are quite small but it’s worth it. The service is not very good but they are not rude.

The location and cake are really nice. Apfelstrudel was amazing ,not super sweet and crusty. One horrible thing:we had a bad service from one staff who is very rude for this kind of restaurant. We really disappointed with this guy particularly the others were really 😊 nice and friendly.

Great location and beautiful cafe indeed. The service is rather cold and horrible. Maybe they don’t like tourist, maybe the waitress doesn’t like Asian . Have to talk to her three times to get the whipped cream for our apple strudel. By the way apple strudel also very average

Came here as a last minute thing around 7pm in the weekend. don't know if you can book but you would still need to wait in line to be seated. We waited around 30 minutes to be seated. Waitress was nice, the cakes were delicious! The hot chocolate was not good, tasted like hot chocolate from the automachines. I reccomend the cardinal slice cake. Will come back for sure to eat and to buy takeaway cakes.

Excellent service! Thank you Tritan for being so accommodating and polite today and changing my order even though the place was so busy! What a beautiful cafe and delicious treats! The apple strudel and hot chocolate were sooo good!

Great strudel paired with decent coffee but the atmosphere is absolutely spectacular! We visited today with our kids so they(we) could take a rest from touring Vienna and were so glad we did! Located adjacent to the Opera House, the location leaves nothing to be desired! A must try for anyone visiting Vienna!

Don't waste your time. The worst customer service I've ever had. The waitresses are sneaky, lazy, and dishonest. They were all too occupied conversing with each other to complete their jobs; they have poor English proficiency but are arrogant and rude. The woman in charge of our table took our order 15 minutes after we arrived, she was standing 5 metres away from our table while writing down the order. Finally, she forgot about one of the dishes, which I had to ask about myself, and she didn't even apologise. We eventually asked for a bill and left without even touching the food. The place is kinda ‘dog friendly’. But they wouldn't let us sit in the corner because we had a tiny poodle, so we asked to be put where we wouldn't disrupt other people. Coming in and rudely educating us that the dog should be on the floor rather than on my knees because 'it's not hygienic' was a necessity for a waitress. Finally, they allowed other guests to sit in the cafe's other rooms, not just the corner table as we asked for.
