Very touristic and quite pricey due to its location near the Royal Palace and its quality, Demel is an amazing place to discover some of the best Vienna’s cakes and desserts. If you like chocolate I really recommend you the Anna Demel cake. Nice service too.

We didn’t have time to queue for the cafe, so went into the shop to experience their patisserie! The shop has some beautiful cakes/biscuits and we purchased some to take away!! They were so delicious!!

This was my favorite restaurant I visited in Austria. It is hard to get a seat, but once you do, everything is delicious! We got traditional Austrian desserts, coffee, and lunch. The bread and pastries were out of this world. I bought chocolates for my family back home and they loved them. Worth waiting for a seat!

This is well know for its cakes and dessert but i am disappointed the quality is very low quality its another tourist trap. Dry cakes and even the classic plum dessert was the worst in the town. Usually ypu go to have sweet and dessert and you come out feeling better but it was the opposite experience you feel what have i done spend money and feel un satisfied. Do not recomend any one. Believe me their are better place for better prices

This cafe is such a beautiful Viennese landmark and is well worth a visit. A coffee and a cake will set you back around 14-20€ each but it's definitely worth it The queue took us around 20 minutes to get through and the service was great. Our cakes and coffees looked very elegant and tasted great To finish, we popped to the Cafe's shop, where we bought some chocolate as a reminder of our visit

What a croissant. Some of our friends suggested us to give this place a try and they were right. The croissant was one of the best I've ever tried, even if compared to the parisian bakery. The cake was good but unluckily I only tried one. Prices were affordable compared to the city. The staff was great. Can't wait to comeback.

Really bad service and 0 for the attention. The sacher torte was ok, nothing out of this world. One waitress for the whole terrace, she was moody and made this a 👎🏼 experience. Its ok to try if you visit Viena for the first time but I’d wouldn’t return nor recommend. The doughnut though was really good.

Lovely experience. We visited during midday so only a few minutes wait and we got seating inside. The apfelstrudle is the best here. Less grandeur than cafe central but very cozy and comfortable. Price is around 10 euros per person. The ice chocolate is very sweet and dense.

Of course, you have to wait in line at Demel. Especially if it's Christmas time and lots of tourists. It is an experience that is worth waiting for. I ordered a Kaiserschmarnn and one of their cakes. The service is professional and the time spent here is high quality.

The welcome was a bit chaotic but the rest of the experience was good. After arriving in this place, just go to the first floor where you can be seated. We enjoy the cake, one of the best Sacher torte and the drinks. Good place to start the day with a good breakfast.

Unfortunately the queue for in house dining was way too long. So I had to be content with the take away. I went for pastries only. The overall taste IMO was not any superior to the general quality of confectionary in the region. In fact taste wise - the experience was rather mediocre. The prices include "brand value" - though I can't endorse this particular brand.

World famous or not, this place is FILTHY. Flies big and small flying around - I'm more busy defending my food than enjoying the food and drinks. On the other hand, the Sacher Chocolate cake looks and tastes good.

Our free tour guide recommended us this place and thank god he did! It was such a wonderful experience! The place, the food, the drinks, the staff… a beautiful place with a lot of history and spectacular food! I’m a dessert lover and for me it’s a place you have to visit 100% if you visit Vienna.

I tried all three 'famous cafes' in Vienna and their Sacher Torte as well and found the one at Demel to taste best. The atmosphere is high class but "packed to the brim with people". The prices are not as high as I had expected and the food, and drinks, we're nice but most of them were very cream heavy. Be sure to have a look at their cake display as they may be offering cakes that aren't specified in the menu. I recommend trying the coffee creme cake or apfelstrudel if you do not yet know it. There's seating on at least 2 floors and the waiting time for us (2p) was around 15 minutes for the 2nd floor.

A classic bakery that everybody must visit when traveling in Vienna. With so many options for sweets and excellent service provide for the servers in a crowed place you got stop for a coffee break and relax with a mouth full of flavour. YOU DEFINITELY MUST TRY IT.

Experience a piece of Viennese history in the opulence of a plush parlour – the oldest cake shop in Vienna, a must-visit for anyone in the area. Indulged in the iconic Sachertorte (sugar torte), and it exceeded expectations with its lightness, perfect balance of chocolate, and just the right amount of sweetness – surprisingly not heavy at all! I think a lot of visitors would mistake the service as poor, cold or unfriendly. But you have to understand: customer service in EU West is different compared to Asia and the US. Servers do not bow down but treat customers as their equal. And this place is so busy. You HAVE to queue for at least 20 minutes if you want a table. Gift shop offers premium gifts. Handmade, lush, beautifully packed confectioneries are just so beautiful I highly recommend getting the Demel Caramels. Figaro if you like hazelnut and chocolate and the Chocolate-covered coffee beans. Coffee 3/59 Croissants 4/5 they are great but they were served cold. Pastry Selection 5/5 Ambience/Atmosphere 5/5 Gift Shop 4/5 I loved everything but they are quite pricey.

What's not to love about Demel! One of the standout features is the chef preparing the Kaiserschmarrn in full view of passersby. The enticing sight and aroma draw everyone in. And when it comes to taste, oh my goodness, it was incredibly delicious and flavorful. What a perfect choice to end the year in style! I highly recommend this experience.

We did not have time to queue to go into the cafe, but we tried the Kaiser Schmarrn to go, and it was amazing! It was one of the best we had! The pastries in the shop also look amazing, but we were too full to try them. This is definitely on our list for our next trip to Vienna!

Worth the wait. Highly recommended to us as a must have while in Vienna. Head over early before the bakery opens. You will still wait in line to get in but with its multi level space there is plenty of room to get you and your party seated. When sat we were greeted with kindness and playfulness with our two year old son. We had to try all their popular items, just ask what they are as that may limited availability during the time your present. We filled up our table and had a tasting tour accompanied by their hot chocolate and an espresso to sip on between tastings. Service and the menu were wonderful. Also wanted to throw out that if you’re not into dining there they have a bakery available on the first floor for take away.

Always a long queue to get in but this is because of good food. Hot chocolate drink, apple strudel and chocolate cake, it was super good. More seating inside though al fresco seating in warmer months. Overall cosy and thoughtful design- paying at the kassa is also a nice experience as you are not just waiting but look at more desserts while waiting.

Really like Demel and have been on several occasions. The scrambled eggs are excellent. The menu is quite small but it is sufficient. The service was quite quick and helpful. The prices are quite high but this is too be expected given the history etc. The venue itself is nice and has character. It's definitely worth a visit if you come to Vienna. I've removed a star due to the need to show a covid vaccine pass, entirely unnecessary. Also some of the take away products in the shop are incredibly expensive which ultimately deters you from buying anything. However these are minor points. Recommended.

The Annetorte but also the Sachertorte tasted at Demel represents two of the best desserts I have ever tasted. A sublime experience. Even if we had to queue up a bit, an experience to be repeated for sure.

Long queuing time to get a table which we can understand as it's Saturday. The sweet stuff is really sweet. The cakes are beautiful and delicious. It's always nice to have sweet treats like ice chocolate drink, cakes, sweet buns with friends and chilling out on Saturday afternoon in Vienna.

Very very nice, but be prepared for a row outside, we waited around an hour. They have delicious sweets and cakes, but are a bit expensive. Their famous box of cookies, which you can buy in the shop in the back of the coffee house is around 200 euros.

You can smell the chocolate outside and if you must eat here, then just get take out and walk straight in. Here's what I tried, I was just curious about the much raved croissant but it's a ridiculous 2.90 euros and it's not bad but it still ain't French. Not worth it. Someone mentioned in the review that the hot chocolate was too sweet but my FOMO made me try it anyways and yes it is just way too sweet and watery and just not worth it. I'm sure the chocolate is fine, but it's really sweet and doesn't have any additional layers of taste, just milk chocolate. I think Starbucks hot chocolate tastes better than this. The barista was nice though. I tried it so you dont have to, skip the hot chocolate please! I also got the sweet bread things x 6 with the vanilla sauce which was heavenly. It has marmalade in there, I believe it's like a blackcurrant and a mandarin type, the vanilla sauce is wonderful. The best was the vanilla filled donut (a tiny one for like 2.70) it was really good and it tasted unlike any other donuts you can get in the states. Finally, the cakes were okay. The Anatorte (chocolate one) had hints of orange and cherry and the frosting had some hazelnut taste. It was good but not the best, a little rich, enjoyable with a cup of coffee but a little difficult to finish. The Dobo cake was ok, but I've had better at Kormuth in Bratislava so in comparison this one is not so exciting. The cake part is moist but also more dense, and the caramel part is good. I guess stick to the vanilla filled stuff and maybe the famous Anatorte cake. Probably wouldn't visit again.

Months before visiting Vienna I knew I would visit this place-they had a very impressive IG account and everything looked beautiful and delicious. However it turned out to be a total disappointment. I visited in June after standing outside for the hope to get a free table-they refused to reserve a table. I got a table inside and my god it was hot in there!!! Felt like hundred degrees inside without fresh air. My cake's glaze melted before I finished it. Instead of staying inside and enjoying my time I ate as quickly as it was possible, took some pictures and ran away. A place with such a huge amount of clients can definitely afford to get an AC, right? I guess it's nice to visit in winter when it's cold outside but definitely not in summer. Also, I always pay attention not only to the service but also how the waiters look. I just imagine these people working there in such a heat all day long, it's insane!!!

Amazing cafe and the food and coffee were superb. We arrived early and were at the head of the line. We opted for inside to avoid the smokers. We sat in the front corner near the window. It was Corpus Christi holiday and the parade moved past us. It was all rather magical. This place is very popular. Get there early if you want the classic Viennese coffee house experience. It's worth it.

Definitely a high-end bakery, but mostly a tourist attraction. Staff is slow to attend to customers, and you should expect to wait for quite a while before receiving your order. The cake is okay, but not worth the price and the wait.

Here is the place to eat a Kaiserschmarrn, which deserves its fame in this establishment, accompanied with its plum jam (with pieces of fruit). But also brioches filled with jam (Dukatenbuchteln), very simple but very gourmet with its hot custard, we only found this delicacy here. It was very, very good and the little wait is deserved!

If you want to feel the atmosphere of Vien , and try some traditional food and drinks, you should go to this place, because it’s working like from 1888 , and serving specialties such as cream cakes, scones & strudels. Also there is a shop with chocolate, deserts and other stuff that you can take to go. I liked it very much!

Very often one has to queue to get in but it is absolutely worth it. We tried several dishes and sweets. Dishes were delicious and some sweets were extraordinary (e.g. Kaiserschmarrn). The Russian Punch Tort however is by far the best cake I have ever eaten! The interior too is splendid.

Cafe Demel in Vienna is a confectionery masterpiece. Steeped in tradition, the elegant setting and courteous staff create an inviting atmosphere. The pastries, cakes, and chocolates are nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing both artistry and flavor. Each bite is a symphony of taste, making it a haven for dessert enthusiasts. While the prices reflect the quality, the experience at Cafe Demel is a delightful indulgence, capturing the essence of Vienna's sweet heritage. A must-visit for those craving an exquisite dessert affair in a refined ambiance.

A fantastic bakery and pastry in the heart of Vienna, their hot beverages are also very enjoyable. However getting seated gets really complicated sometimes as the queue gets very large. The waitress is adorable and will serve you very well, a must have in such an idyllic place.

Great little place with a nice atmosphere and nice food. Reasonable prices and not too far away from St Stephen’s or Neuer Markt. We did have to pay cash when I went, although, I think there was an issue with the machine rather than them not accepting cards. English menus are provided for tourists.

It’s good it’s not too sweet. We managed not to wait. It’s not that special but we could enjoy the antique mood. And it was good that there were not many group tourist unlike Sacher.

Went there due to its legacy and half expected the results. Waiting line for a table was limited at that time. Staff was polite and the service was quick. BUT we tried 4 different cakes and they were below average. And everything was extremely sweet. Too much sugar.

came here on my first morning in Vienna and had the best cakes and pastries of my trip. Went to another coffee house nearby on the next day and wished that I’d just gone back to Demel. Gorgeous interior, delicious cakes, lovely coffee.

A brilliant and historic cafe that serves up their own authentic drinks and cakes along with meals. We had tea and hot chocolate here and opted for the Demel version of them which were brilliant and super quality. The apple strudel is the best I've ever had and would recommend to anyone. You also get to see how they make the cakes which is a nice touch.

I ended up here spontaneously and definitely had the best zacher torte in Vienna! It wasn’t too dry like the other ones I had. This place is as classy and nicely decorated as the Cafe Sacher but the wait is nowhere near as long. There is an upstairs salon which was quite nice. I definitely recommend going here for dessert and coffee.

  • 4/5 Cindy G. 4 years ago on Google
Great place for coffee and cake! All the cakes we had were so good! They were not overly sweet and highly enjoyable! However, the service and seating process really need to be improved to match their institution reputation. The guests (at that time it was probably mostly tourist) were lining up properly, but the locals just walked passed us and make their own way to the empty tables themselves and were not stopped. But when a guest, who couldn’t speak local language, tried to do the same, it attracted different response from the staff.

Demel is “THE” museum of all traditional Austro-Hungarian cakes, tortes, and strudels. This is one of the world’s leading pastry shops! Famous Jewish author Friedrich Torberg loved it. Just look at the selection of treats! I grew up in this city. I know all the places that pretend to surpass this landmark. Not-one shop, except maybe the excellent Sluka at Rathaus, comes even close. Demel is always packed with tourists but it’s well worth the wait for these fabulous cakes, tortes, open-faced sandwiches and other savory food. (To avoid the crowd, we often get their cakes to take them home.) If you’re lucky, a peek towards the back might grant you a glimpse of someone making traditional Viennese apple strudel, or Sachertorte. Demel, Sluka and Café Central complement each other. You’ll find many things here that you don’t get there, and visa versa. Demel has also got a sort of Museum, two rooms downstairs (inquire for opening hours) filled with sculptures made out of something close to marzipan – I guess real marzipan would have been too expensive for something that nobody would eat, as they were only intended for display.

Unfortunately there was a wait of 40 min. to get a seat, so we chose to buy 2 pieces. cakes for eating outside. Two afternoons ago my wife and I entered at about 6.30 pm and, after a strange joke to light the back room, we sat down at a table with very little space available. A young waitress introduced herself whose only concern was to warn us that in 20 minutes they would close and she would take only the order of the drink while if we wanted to eat the Sacher cake we would have to go and get it at the counter !! All this rather annoyed. We only drank a mineral and a latte macchiato (completely absent sugar). Been there to taste the famous Sachertorte. The location is right at the city centre not far from Michaelerplatz. This place seems always crowded both with curious tourist like me and locals. Once u enter the door u will see the display of the cakes that they offer, on the right side is the shop. The sitting area are at the back, the small area near the open kitchen/workshop and a bigger one on the upper floor. The waiters are not really friendly, maybe because they are exhausted of so many people that come every day. To order the cakes u have to go to the front (where the cakes are displayed) and pick ur cake there, they will write ur order in a piece if paper and u just have to give that paper to the waiter on the table. Drinks and other foods are ordered straight from the table. They have 4 size of Sachertorte, the big whole cake €31, the small whole cake €19, the one slice of big whole cake and the mini bite one -Sachertotchen €2,5. The cake was a chocolate cake infused with apricot, for my taste it was quite nice because it doesn’t taste that sweet. But my favorite was their fruit pie, it was amazing. Must try!

I mean, how could you not! They look so frickin good. Well look no further - Demel is where you wanna go to if you wanna try confections from a single place only. Or you just want something sweet. Best deserts in Vienna, hands down.

Let's be honest. You've come to this cafe because of the hype. The strudel. Cafe culture. Viennese coffee. I'm here to tell you that it's not worth it. Instead of being inspired to write my great novel, I'm writing this review instead to tell you why. Firstly, and most scandalously, a "Viennese coffee" is €5.90. €5.90! I can tell you now that it wasn't even that good. The famous strudel was lukewarm and distinctly average. Additionally: there are queues! Forget whiling away a few hours sat writing, you are constantly reminded of the mass of others waiting for a table! Currently, perhaps due to Covid-19 restrictions, there are only outdoor tables limiting capacity. In short, this has now become the definition of a tourist trap. Avoid it and send your custom to the many other bakeries around Vienna.

Completely overrated! We have read so much about this cafe and had high expectations. And so we insisted to go there despite the not so pleasant reviews we have read. The hostess was very kind and pleasant and we got so lucky because we were seated in the main room right behind the statue. Luckily because the back rooms are dreadful and not even worth queuing up to get there. The food was average at best and there was no particular atmosphere that lives up to the promoted “royal” image of the cafe. It’s definitely a tourist trap. PS: get ready to queue up atleast 30min to get in

When you go to this Café in the afternoon you will see many people waiting in the line, but if you don't wanna wait so long, you can choose to take out. Anyway waiters are very busy, so we gotta wait for a while to take orders. These little buns in the picture, I forgot its name, have jam in it and the vanilla sauce tastes really good 👍 if you're there for dessert, I won't recommend you hot chocolate. it's tooooo sweet and thick.

I was visiting vienna a couple weeks ago to see a friend who lives here and she was telling me about the famous cake they sell here so i wanted to try it. The queue for sit in looked really long but only took about 10 minutes or so to get a table. Cake was really good but we also got a kaiserschmarrn with stewed plums which stole the show. So delicious and went really went with the sharp, tart plums. Very expensive for what it is but worth a visit if you are visiting, not sure if i would go back, but you have to visit at least once. Service wasn't great and we had to ask 3 times for our bill after the serve kept ignoring us but over all a pleasant experience.

Waited in like for about 15-20 minutes for a table for 4. It’s definitely touristy but you have to do it. Inside of the cafe is amazing. Thought the sacher torta was a little dry. Definitely the best thing there was the Dukatenbuchteln - which are sweet rolls with vanilla sauce. Watching them roll the dough and prepare it was excellent. Only had coffees and desserts no food. If you are into Sisi her favorite thing to eat was candied violets which you could buy in the back.

The place is very nice and the sweets are really good we have tried a couple of different desert both outstanding, but the apple one is outstanding. The good thing is that they aren’t very sweet, and the jam is a bit sour which we loved. The coffee is really good, they use good beans, and the presentation is good enough. The seating area at the end before the shop is cosy, and they have a shop on the way out which will melt your mouth even after eating. It is very worth queueing to get in

We went here to try some of the iconic Viennese cakes. The store is really beautiful and has a nice displays of their many cakes. It is a bit chaotic inside as there are several queues for different things. It can be hard to choose since all the cakes look delicious, however, we went with a Sachertorte and a Nougat cake rolled in nuts. We bought them as to-go which made them €1 cheaper each. The cakes are a little expensive at about €4-9 depending on the kind you choose. Both cakes we got absolutely lived up to their expectations. The Sachertorte had a rich and deep flavor and the nougat cake was very airy and had a nice balanced flavor. The place is popular and crowded for a reason. We did not regret going here.

Across 3 types of desert we tried that day October 2023. I wasn't sure why the fuzz about this place. It's nice but definitely not the best. Also, it seems there is a lot of free spaces inside so not queue outside unless you want to be seated outside

it has a long waiting list for main area so we sat on bar side. we tried kaiserschmarren and double espresso. if you are not into eggs and butter you may not like it. because its a little bit heavy and it tastes&smells egg and butter a lot. sitting on the bar was nice and cute, if you have time in vienna you can wait for upstairs or you can come as early as you can but bar was nice and has great atmosphere too.

This place is a must. It has that museum feel with some amazing display features. They are making the pancakes (Kaiserschmarrn) fresh through the window which always entices the public in. The pancake was nice but we had better at another place which was surprising.
