The Third Man Museum is a unique and one-of-a-kind museum. Karin and Gerhard have created a real gem of a museum. Hundreds of photos, posters and many special exhibits about the film and Austria in the post-war period. We travelled all the way from Chicago to visit this privately run museum and it was more than worth it. I would give it six stars if I could. The passion that has been put into this project is outstanding.

What a wonderful surprise to visit this fascinating museum in Vienna. They have an incredible collection of artifacts for the movie "The Third Man" filmed in Vienna shortly after the end of the war and the extent of the destruction is real in the film. I immediately rented the movie when I go home. It is worth it to visit this museum for the movie history alone but the museum has much more including a fine collection of materials from Vienna and WWII. The photos and stories are moving and fascinating. The collections adds depth and detail to what the war and aftermath was really like as the world slipped into the cold war. A visit is well worth the time.

Awesome museum! And not only for The Third Man movie fans. It is divided into 3 parts: a) the movie, b) the zither / short projection, c) preWW2 and postWW2 Vienna. The 1st part has all imaginable stuff about the movie. It had to be impossibly hard to get their hands on all the memorabilia. The 2nd part includes a 2 minute projection of parts of the movie - it is projected on an old projector from the 30s. The 3rd part is dedicated mostly to the city of Vienna - pre-war era and post-war era. Quite sad things on display but as it all happened, it is a great exhibition. All text is in both German and English. The friendly staff speaks English quite well.

Learn about the history of Vienna immediately after WW2. The museum focus on the Move Third Man as a representation of that era.

Not only a fantastic collection of Third Man memorabilia, but also plenty of information about Vienna during and after the war. It was really lovely to chat with the owners who are both very friendly and clearly super passionate. The two young women working there were both very friendly and informative too. It was cool to watch a clip of the movie on the old projector, as well as see the new grave exhibit! I really enjoyed my visit and I’d highly recommend!

A really interesting private Museum. A must if you wish to understand how life was in the Cold War in Vienna. No waiting time at entrance, but hosted in three different spaces, some underground (no lift). Young guides very friendly and helpful. A suggestion if you wish to fully understand what was the life in those terribile times:1) first watch the movie (many visitors in the film location have not yet seen the movie and didn't realize how important was and still is) and 2) visit the location nearby (advance booking strongly suggested, due to the bad smelling a face cover is most recommended,as in my pucture) 3)then visit the outstanding Museum:a must and a treasury of historical memorabilia. A couple of hours to fully appreciate the exibition .Vienna was occupied by Four Powers and The Third Man,a masterpice,a symbol, of the disaster of the war.

Absolutely fantastic place, whether or not you are a The Third Man fanatic. Incredible history of Vienna before, during and after WW2. But truly amazing collection of artifacts from the movie: it's script, stars, location, production - everything. The most amazing thing is that this is a labor of love - not a commercial enterprise - created by an astonishing couple who are passionate about the film, The Third Man, and the incredible moment in history that it captures. Besides having collected and creating the phenomenal exhibits, the couple - Gerhard and Karin - are the most lovely people. When you come to the museum you will undoubtably meet them and instantly strike up a rapport. To my astonishment, they ended up giving me a gift: a film poster that they took right off their wall!! I will certainly visit them - and the museum - again and again.

I go to Vienna regularly and always visit the Third Man Museum on Preßgasse, and I always discover something new for myself. The staff is nice😁and very competent if you have any questions. Since last year you can also admire the gravestone here, see photo. I wish Mr. Strassgschwandtner and his wife 😁 Ms. Höfler continued success with their museum. Kind regards from Frankfurt am Main

Well. You need to love the film (and why wouldn't you? ) to appreciate the Museum. But the Vienna context room was very interesting for all. And we were lucky to see the Zither concert as well. Lovely people!

The Third Man Museum, which opened in 2005, displays a comprehensive collection of exclusively original exhibits on an area of over 400 m² in 14 rooms relating to the international film success "The Third Man", which was filmed in Vienna in 1948 and was based on the novel of the same name by Graham Greene. The Third Man Museum is a two-person project initiated by Gerhard Strassgschwandtner. The collection is by Strassgschwandtner, design and concept by Karin Höfler. In the spirit of the former universalists, they built the museum entirely on their own, without outsourcing. It is a private museum without sponsors or subsidies. The museum is a contact point for film fans and at the same time a door opener to Vienna's post-war history. The exhibits on display bear witness to the international success of film and portray everyday life in the city occupied by the Allies (Americans, Soviets, English, French) from 1945 to 1955.

Any fan of this iconic film who is interested in Vienna during and shortly after WWII should visit this privately owned museum. The artefacts sorrounding this topic that are displayed here are fascinating and the amount of passion and work that must have gone into creating this place is incredibly impressive. I had never heard of the "Third Man" and basically stumbled on this gem while looking for something to do in Vienna. And I'm glad I did. It was a great experience and well worth the visit and entry fee.

It was an amazing experience! The employees were absolutely incredible - very polite and helpful. I didn't speak German, but they were very understanding and told me a lot of interesting information about the museum in English. I highly recommend going there, even if you haven't watched the movie. It's a great place for photography lovers too.

***You MUST visit this amazing museum*** I was in Vienna with my son last week and was thrilled when I discovered that this museum exists, it is a film lover's dream and doesn't disappoint. The Third Man museum is open from 2-6pm on Saturdays. There are lots of original props, room sets and items relating to the film together with pictures and articles from post-war Vienna. These provided a new dimension as I saw the reality of that time and how it tied in with the film. Previously I had seen the film as a story, and now I view it as social commentary. The museum is privately owned and funded by Gerhard Strassgschwandtner and Karin Hofler. They search all over the world for pieces to add to their collection and the placement of the pieces follow the same route as the film. It is a true homage. Gerhard and Karin are delightful people and we were able to spend a little time talking with them about the museum and the genre in general. I love learning and I gained lots of new knowledge from talking to them. Gerhard is the Third Man oracle and his enthusiasm is infectious. This was the highlight of my holiday and I know that we'll be returning the next time we're in Vienna. I left the museum walking on air from the experience plus the bonus of talking to like-minded people. Thank you Gerhard and Karin. Do not miss the opportunity to visit this great museum when you're in Vienna. Be sure to comment here and on social media as this little museum deserves a wider audience. After your visit, go to Prater for a ride on the famous Wiener Riesenrad ferris wheel that appears in the film.

If like me you love the film The Third Man then this should be high on your list, it is one of the most informative museums I've ever been to. The amount of documents, personal letters, videos is unbelievable so much that my partner who's not seen the film felt like he watched it 😂 we were talking to an American visitor who had been to the museum over 20 times (even he recommends here) it is that good. I feel like I've learnt more about Vienna and the film, we even spotted the infamous doorway with the statues on either side after we left. The staff and owner are lovely and knowledgeable, keep up the good work and will recommend here to anyone I know whose visiting

Absolutely recommended visit!!!! It's simply amazing how much passion not only film history but also contemporary history is presented and exhibited here and shown to the astonished visitor. Many thanks to the operators and the words of a fellow visitor: I would have missed something as a tourist to Vienna if she hadn't been here. I can only agree. BRAVO and THANK YOU!!!

I have rarely been as enthusiastic about a museum as I was about the third man. Here you can feel the dedication and love of a collector. What do you do when you want to share your enthusiasm with those around you? You open a museum. I have no idea how he got the originals, such as a film projector from 1936. There he stands. He told us how he got the original gravestone from the burial scene. Chapeau, I take my hat off, full appreciation for this enthusiasm. I have now also watched the film.

Admirable collections of things that are connected to the film, actors and much more. You can feel that the museum was created by heart :) We appreciated also the third part where you can discover more about the context of post-war Vienna. We enjoyed it so much and spent there about 2,5 hours.

A must-visit gem of a museum with a comprehensive collection of memorabilia about this great film. And the section on Vienna before, during, and after World War II is utterly fascinating. A brilliant labor of love run by a husband and wife team who are devoted experts in both the film and the history. Looking forward to returning soon!

An excellent presentation of detailed and original material relating to the film and the city. The information about pre and post war Vienna was particularly good. It is obviously a labour of love and the owners/curators were extremely helpful and welcoming. It is a joy to find little gems like this in a city full of big ticket locations. Many thanks.

This is by far the best museum in all of Vienna! If you visit Vienna, it should be at the top of your list of things to do. So many originals from the third man movie and all the background information you need to understand the film even better. For me personally, it is particularly interesting that the owners of the museum dedicated a part of the museum to the post-war period in Vienna. A time about which one does not otherwise learn very much in Vienna. Great recommendation!

OK so I visited the Museum on September 16th at about 2:30 pm, 2023. I was extremely pleased with what I got for my admission of 11Euros. There is a lot here to see. The first section is mostly photos from the film itself, all the stars, their background and some photos from their personal lives. Each actor is given appropriate space with, of course, heavier emphasis given to the 3 or 4 main actors. There is a separate section devoted just to Wells. In the second section of the Museum they showed a very short 2 minute clip of the film with the original 1936 Zeiss camera used in the making of the film or a similar camera of the time. There was too a section given to the famous Anton Karas, who played the famous zither music throughout the film. I found out in section 3 of the museum that the famous ferris wheel scene was done in a studio in London. It broke my heart, but maybe I should have known this. The 3rd part had a lot of articles and photos of Vienna leading up to and through the second world war. The occupation was well represented. I could have spent more than 75 minutes there, but I as mentioned I thought it was well worth the price of admission, so I will return. I thank the staff who were all pleasant and professional. That's my review old man...

Stunning. It is based across different houses on the street, chasing the story from room to room is so perfectly in keeping with the film. Very informative indeed. One of the great museums of the world.

Most interesting museum in the city, and a must for anyone curious about the history of Austria immediately before and after WW2. You will be touched by what you encounter in the exhibits. The section devoted to the 'Third Man' is a must for all film buffs. The people who run the museum (independent of all state support) are delightful and refreshingly outspoken.

The Third Man is one of the best movies of all time, and a serious contender for the finest ever. This museum celebrates the movie's countless facets while demonstrating a gold standard for avid and enthusiastic sense of memorabilia collecting and curation. The museum is loaded with countless of items, arranged with much attention and presented alongside informative descriptions. It features three parts: all-encompassing memorabilia and information about every possible aspect of the film; profound exhibition about Vienna during and after WWII which complements the necessary historical context for the The Third Man; and finally a diorama presentation that immerse the visitor in The Third Man unique and elusive atmosphere: from the sewers to the cemetery. The tour in the museum ends with the desire to re-watch the film. We recommend spending the full four hours of the opening time slot as there is so much to see, watch and read.

  • 5/5 John J. 1 year ago on Google
Vienna offers some of the best museums in the world, but none of them are so utterly surprising, enjoyable, or memorable as this little gem in a lovely neighborhood just around the corner from the Naschmarket. I had seen The Third Man a couple of times over the years and thought it was a great film. But never in my wildest imagining would I have thought it would make for such an engaging museum experience. The collection of items and artifacts here is mind-blowing, and so thoughtfully presented that even the most casual visitor is going to be impressed! There is also a full section of the museum that’s completely devoted to documenting Vienna in the years leading up to - and following - World War 2, helping to shed light on the setting of the film. Beyond all of this, what makes The Third Man Museum so winning is that it’s truly a labor of love for Gerhard and Karin, the couple who created, own, and operate it, all with no governmental or institutional support. If you happen to find yourself in Vienna with a couple hours to spare, you have to check this place out. As for me, it will be among the nicest memories of my time visiting Vienna. Thank you, Karin and Gerhard!

  • 5/5 Graham E. 1 year ago on Google
This is a brilliant museum. My wife says we spent over two hours looking round the exhibits - it didn't seem anything like that long and I could easily have spent more time. The exhibit section about pre- and post-war Austria is excellent. So even if you only have a short time in Vienna take the opportunity to visit this great museum.

  • 5/5 Nikolas D. 1 year ago on Google
Very nice experience in a unique and innovate project! Keep your passion alive and I hope that next time I visit Vienna you have expanded the museum even more!! I also strongly recommend to purchase an Anton Karas album because it s so unique and relatively rare!! The people of the museum are fantastic and very helpful!! As for the end i would like to suggest to the owner, after a little chat we had, to visit again Greece because now it s way better than he remembers it!! Keep the good job!!

This museum was the highlight of our trip to Vienna. The section on post-war Vienna and the period from 1933-1945 was especially strong. They cover material that many people would like to forget, but should not be forgotten

My husband and I visited with a Rick Steve's tour in early August. We still have not seen the movie, but The Third Man Museum was fascinating. Not nearly enough time allowed to study all the history that Gerhard has secured over the years. Would love to watched the interviews he has running throughout the museum. Wish there was a way to view them online here at home. Purchased his book and have read it completely, as least what is in English. Again, amazing pictures and historical information about WWII in his book. As a side note, Gerhard also was our guide at another local museum in Vienna. First time in my life (Donnie) that I enjoyed a museum tour. His story telling brought the pictures to life. Thank you Gerhard for a great morning in Vienna.
