We visited this place as soon as they opened and the kind girl at the reception told us to book the audio guide in English since most labels in the museum are in German. I’m glad we did because most things would make no sense at all. We payed around 23€ for two adult tickets with the audio guide and we were inside for a bit more than an hour. There are many rooms to walk through and a lot of interesting things to see! We are very happy we visited because it is not often you find such museum in European countries!

So most of the information is in German but with Google Translate we were able to get more informed on some of the stories we found interesting. It was just a fun random, not so touristy attraction and it was under 10 euros! Here are a few of the things you'd see if you're a crime junky like me!

Really cool museum about crime in Vienna. Only downside is that almost everything is in German. So I would recommend buying an audiotour to fully understand everything. The museum is rather big as well, but you also have a lot of seating to sit down meanwhile. Would definitely recommend

A very unique and interesting museum. The lady on the reception was very friendly and helpful advising us to take the tour of the museum with the english audio headphones as most parts of the exhibition were in german. The tour is about an hour or a bit more and it has around 18 - 20 rooms to pass through and a beautiful backyard in the end explaining the building itself. Definetely a must go if you re into touring and learning about a different side of history. A warning to visitors though, i wouldnt recomend children to visit.

We love a little dark tourism, and this place was fantastic. Highly recommend the audio tour if you aren't fluent in German, but holy moly we loved this museum. Fascinating artifacts, stories, and paintings. Not a place to bring your kids, but if you like true-crime and history, this is the place for you!!

We saw this on one of the apps for attractions in the city, so we decided to go and see what it was like and it was incredible! I found it very interesting, and the audio guide was very good! Even thought everything isn’t fully translated into English, I still thoroughly enjoyed my visit! The staff were so friendly and helpful, and I learned a lot about the history of Vienna! Would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in true crime!

I was done with my touristy stuff in the first two days of my vacation. So I decided to do some off places. This one doesn't disappoint you if you have a knack for crime related topics. Since I am a big time crime fiction and documentary fan, I decided to give it a shot. The entry ticket is 9 Euros I think which is a lot. They should give discount or keep it under 3to 5 Euros. But it's a pretty interesting place to see. I was the only tourist in the entire museum. Just imagine walking through all the historical facts, documentation and memorabilia related to crime in Vienna and Europe all your own.

This museum is mostly for German speaking people, especially all the history related stuff makes more sense if you were born in Austria. Besides that the museum is rather big, especially with many of the cellars. Sadly most of that space is used to overfill the museum with all sorts of information, it gets overwhelming quickly, especially if you have used the audio guide. I did enjoy the variation of crimes and atrocities displayed but I often felt as if some crimes weren't explained as entertaining as they could have been. If one were to improve this museum, then theyd probably try to simplify it, leaving only the most interesting bits instead of just trying to tell us EVERYTHING that has ever happened in Vienna/Austria. I felt very relieved once I left the museum, as it was very disturbing to take in (not the fault of the museum though). There are some seating spaces throughout the museum, but if more than 4-5 people are in a room, then it gets full fast and you can't enjoy the experience anymore. Anyways the money is definitely worth it if you want endless amounts of information about the historical crimes that have happened in the city, but if you want something quick and entertaining, then you're definitely wrong here since it just exhausts you after 40 minutes.

Not a lot of objects, mostly boards of stories, which are all in German. For this reason staff recommend an audio guide, which (at least in English) was so monotonous it made me sleepy, and made the visit much longer. The numbers on the walls corresponding to the recording were hard to find, and sometimes it was hard to tell what the story was referring to. Overall a pretty boring experience given all the crimes it was referring to. And they don’t let you take photos.

Hidden gem. It is not among the mainstream museum like Schonbrün, but it reveals a lot about the history of the city. There is a surprisingly large amount of information, so I would recommend at least 3-4 hours, especially if you are doing the audio guide and want to hear about everything. The service was also very nice. The young lady at the front desk was very helpful and gave us a good description for what to expect.

It was ok, a bit too expensive in my opinion. For those who likes crimes stories I recommend if you have nothing else to do in Vienna

One of the best museum I have ever been in. You can see expositions which are dedicated to different historical time, original evidences of crimes and moreover body’s of murdered (bones).

Big museum with only small entry fee. You can learn a lot about the history of big Austrian murder cases. The exhibition is very explicit, some other visitors we're a bit overwhelmed.

(Translated by Google) Wiener Kriminalmuseum - A foray through history In times of file number XY unsolved and crime scene, the crime lurks around every corner. Has it always been like this? Who knows ... or does it ?! ;-) Here in the museum you can read, guess and literally "understand" at selected exhibits what the work of the criminal police must have been like 100 or more years ago. The focus is always on documentation and objectivity. It also becomes apparent that 150 years ago the "sensationalism" of the press already existed. All in all: very successful! Alles in allem: Sehr gelungen!

Interesting retrospect on the human beast-like cruelty amongst the Vienese beauty throughtout past few centuries. Great museum, but is slightly inconvenient for the non-German speakers. A couple more of key descriptions in English would give a boost amongst foreign visitors) Otherwise, a masterfully crafted collection and awesome friendly stuff make this place a non-traditional must-see.

It is basically photos of crime scenes and newspaper articles in frames. Some skeletons and torture devices. 9 euro to get in but if you do not know german you need ab audio guide which adds another 2 euro. Really not worth it in my opinion.

My son and I visited the Vienna Crime Museum with low expectations based on the reviews. We were very happily surprised and delighted by how interesting and extensive the museum was. We thought 1 hour would cover it, but it took us four hours to get through, and we had to rush through the last couple of exhibits as they were closing. Definitely get the 2 euro audio guides in English. This is Austria, and while a lot was in English, there was even more in German, but the audio filled in the gaps. As others have said, the delightful woman from Linz that works the desk is an Austrian National Treasure. She was the perfect combination of polite, enthusiastic, warm and welcoming. Truly a beautiful soul. She was worth the price of admission just by herself. She also turned us on to The Narrenturm, which houses the pathological anatomy museum. We spent a day checking that out as well. Thanks beautiful woman from Linz!

I love how interactive this museum is. It’s probably one of the most fascinating museums I’ve ever visited. The audio guide was so descriptive and brutally accurate. I could only stay here for a couple hours but I could have easily spent the entire day here!!

Interesting museum, with a blend of Vienna history and criminal cases that happened in this city (or by its citizens). Definitely recommend the audio guide, as many of the objects in the exhibition are only described in German.

Amazing. We went there, half expecting a tourist trap. We spent over an hour there and learnt a lot about the history of criminology. The audio-guide is a great idea for those who don't speak German (it costed us only 2€ per person). All in all, the museum is pretty macabre, but not in a sensationalized, tasteless way.

(Translated by Google) What an interesting museum! I absolutely recommend the audio guide, because it made the interesting stories, the recorded sounds and the music a special experience. The exhibits are arranged in time so that you get a historical overview of the crime. You are informed about various known criminal cases in Austria and get an overview of the (historical) development of jurisdiction and police work (e.g. what options were available at the time at the time of the investigation). The exhibits are very interesting. There are not only paintings and prints of various texts (newspaper articles, judgments, etc.), but also murder weapons in the original, skeletons and photos of perpetrators and victims. This may take some getting used to and I agree with the previous reviews, not necessarily for the faint of heart. But you don't need to be afraid either, because you can go past it if necessary. We found the exhibition great and the audio guide succeeded! For a visit with an audio guide, I recommend planning at least two and a half hours to listen to all the stations. In summer, a thin jacket may be advisable, as it is a little fresh, especially in the ice cellar. Very clear recommendation! Must see.

Okay, I would give it 5 stars, but I only speak English, so I found the museum a bit lacking. There are some translations, but maybe only 15 percent of what is there. It was actually very interesting, and I enjoyed it a lot, but they should charge less for none-German speakers. Also, the lighting was not always very good, so some displays and signs were not as accessible as they should be. And I swear some of the artifacts are rusting under the plexiglass. Still liked it though.

  • 4/5 Julien a. 4 years ago on Google
Really enjoyed this museum, the only reason why I haven't given 5star is because there could be more English informations as we feel we've missed on some good stories ! 9€ per person, which made us think this would be a short one, and we've actually spent more than an hour touring it if there were more English translations, we would have easily spent 2 hours. You have the possibility to leave your jacket and bags at the entrance, with no cloakroom fee, we've left a huge bag of sweets we bought as gifts for our return, and not a bite was taken! Would not recommend for Children who would be old enough to understand what's going on (could result in nightmares), or for people of a delicate disposition, in other word this can very gruesome and graphic. But other than that we thoroughly enjoyed it, would have been a bummer to miss it as we almost didn't go, very glad we did!

Those who do not understand German are given a pantry which briefly introduces each single room without providing any translation of the thousand captions present. A miserable and frustrating experience both for those interested in understanding the evolution of the relationship between justice and criminals and for those who want to see just a few rough images. This place may not look like much on the outside but inside it is brimming with interesting information and intriguing displays. They have everything from skeletons, to heads, to real weapons and each carries with is an in depth explanation! I will say this too- the museum is bigger than it looks on the outside! I thought 2 hours was enough to see everything but I was wrong! There is so much in there! If you like true crime as much as I do, plan for some extra time. I am also an english teacher in Hungary and the kind man who worked here was able to provide some interesting reading material about the museum. My students are very excited about it and some want to visit the museum when they are in Vienna! Thank you so much for everything! Note: cash ONLY

(Translated by Google) The Criminal Museum deals with the history of law enforcement from the Middle Ages to the present day. Some interesting cases are dealt with. The exhibition includes murder weapons, crime scene pictures and some newspaper articles and court judgments. But it is only for people who are really interested in it. My tip: take an audio guide with you.
