Foltermuseum Wien

Tourist attraction • Museum • Historical landmark

😐 They call it the biggest torture museum in Europe, but honestly this can’t be true. The entrance is barely noticeable. But what’s cool about the entrance, once you go down, it’s getting cold and kind of creepy. So you’re getting into the mood of entering a torture. Useful. The price is bit overprice...

They call it the biggest torture museum in Europe, but honestly this can’t be true. The entrance is barely noticeable. But what’s cool about the entrance, once you go down, it’s getting cold and kind of creepy. So you’re getting into the mood of entering a torture. Useful. The price is bit overpriced for the size. They have a handful of torture devices there but all the information is in german. So I would not recommend going there if you aren’t speaking German.

I liked the museum, for the fact that it raises awareness of general public on torture, which, sadly, is still practiced nowadays. The museum has only a few rooms though, and the explanations printed next to the items presented are only in German. You can get a guide in English, but it is more like a general presentation of torture over times. You can buy that guide at the end for 2 EUR, in case you want to keep it. At the entrance they have a few souvenirs, if you like, for example, ashtrays or cups or small shot glasses with skuls. If it would be just a bit bigger, this museum could become a trully great atraction. When we visited the museum, in the first room there was an exposition then in last room some videos, both the exposition and videos from Amnesty International, made to raise awarenes, once more, on torture still being practiced nowadays, and on death penalty still existing in some countries.

Fun but very reading-heavy, especially as an English tourist. We were given booklets with the translations (around 10/11 pages) so most of the time was spent just reading

Great place, great info. It just looked a bit "unattended". Just a few of the information boards were in English so you would have to know German to read about the different torture methods.

Cool exhibitions that are showing vividly the horrifying historic of torments in vienna and Europe between the 15-18 centuries.

(Translated by Google) Lives on its uniqueness. Not very big and not so much to see but if you are already in Vienna, worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) The museum is located in a former air raid shelter. The area is quite manageable, but the price is okay. As the name suggests, there are (medieval) torture instruments, mostly the plot is reproduced with figures. However, many torture instruments are only replicas and not originals. You shouldn't touch / try them out. If you have some time left, you can stop by, but the museum is not worth an extra detour. Anfassen/Ausprobieren darf man keine.

(Translated by Google) Very disappointing. € 12 entry, no discounts for students, hardly any texts in English. It was very small and little new or special was exhibited. Everyone knows the rack. We also lacked interesting information about the torture methods. For example, their applications and what happens to the bodies of the tortured. I do not recommend it due to the very poor price / performance ratio.

(Translated by Google) Mediocre experience. I was allowed to look at many of the old instruments and let them stimulate me easily, but when I wanted to clamp my mastiff Rexi in the rack for illustration, I was stopped by a wildly waving, completely over-the-top employee. It went so far that he threatened to call the police out of nowhere, should I not return my own "blade" in my pocket and leave the premises.

(Translated by Google) No interesting attractions. Admission 6 € which I think is really an exaggeration, because you can spend 5 minutes in the museum (Original) Żadnych ciekawych atrakcji.

It was very informative and interesting to see and read how people in the middle ages were tortured. It was also very cold there, being in a "Luftschutzkeller" (Bunker underground from WW2)

Called to ask if they take card or cash. The lady on the phone got mad at me for asking this and hung up on me mid call. She said „is this what you’re calling me for ?“ in an aggressive manner. Never ever visiting this museum. Not worth It.

Not really interesting for me to see the old means of torture in kinda wax figures. Didn't like it, was not as expected at all, and price is quite high for the content of the exhibition.

The museum view is quite nice and you can have a look but you don't have to go again. (Original) Kleines, nettes Museum direkt beim Haus des Meeres. (Translated by Google) Very informative museum with a serious topic that inspires you to think after your visit. Specifically the section on Guantanamo and the 15th century comparison. 21st century leaves one thinking. The location in an original WWII bunker adds to the creepy atmosphere. Super nice staff that instructs you. The bottom line: highly recommended. Vs. 21. Jh. lässt einen Nachdenken. Die Location in einem Original-Bunker des 2. Weltkriegs tut sein ßbriges zur gruseligen Stimmung. Super nettes Personal dass eine einweist. Unterm Strich: sehr empfehlenswert.

(Translated by Google) Nice little but very interested museum. It is located right next to the Haus des Meeres and is in a former air-raid shelter. The various torture methods and techniques are presented well and clearly, but without it becoming "gruesome". You go from one niche to another and are designed as a tour. Something different and worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) A must see in Vienna. Just think it's a shame that people steal items and because of the lack of surveillance they also get away without problems. (Original) Ein must see in Wien.

(Translated by Google) For 4.50, - € admission with Vienna Card a top thing. The ambience in an old air-raid shelter naturally frames the topic again. There is an audio guide that accompanies you through the exhibition and is very informative. I can recommend it to anyone who wants to deal with the topic and is interested in history. Super friendly girl at the cash desk, who also told a little something about the history of the bunker. Here you get more performance for your money than in the Tourist Nap SCHÖNBRUNN ...
