One of the best ethnological museums I have ever visited! Amazing and correct presentation of the objects. Information in German and in English. The permanent exhibition on the 1st floor is a masterpiece. A great, mystical journey through all civilizations of the planet given in a very compact and descriptive way which contrasts with the architecture of the building. On the 2nd floor there is the armory collection alongside with the collection of musical instruments. Very clean and very friendly stuff. The cafe also is beautiful. The museum is located in one of the former imperial castles. A must see when in Vienna, highly recommended.

Amazing museum with interesting and diverse exhibitions, all in a very nice building. Perfect for anyone who likes anthropology, history, medieval armour and weaponry, and unique musical instruments. You can even play some rare musical instruments on the top floor too!

Excellent museum with the famous headdress allegedly belonging to Aztec emperor Moctezuma and other precious objects from diverse civilizations around the world. The ticket includes access to a superb collection of renaissance and baroque musical instruments. Highly recommended!

I was hesitant at first to go because there was no clear direction to go to this museum above others. However it turned out to have one of the most incredible contemporary art exhibits on Nepalese and Tibetan culture. Very moving and beautiful. The rest of the museum was overall informational and good but not as exciting.

I wanted to give it 5 stars but couldn’t. It’s a great museum especially if you love Anthropology and Military History. The Armoury is a sight to behold. I’ve never seen such an extensive collection of weapons and armour. Some very unique pieces displayed: children armour, armour with bullet marks, helmets with masks incorporated in the design and a few others. However, except for 2 pieces of description in English, everything was in German. A bit of a shame, as I would have loved to read the details. Lights were off on one display and the level of light in general was bit low. Anthropology section had plenty of English descriptions.

The science fiction exhibit was good. The main exhibit was lacking in context for most of the artifacts and if there was context it was not very easy to find. It also felt like the museum was trying to acknowledge the fact that most of its artifacts were not sourced ethically while taking no responsibility for that fact. Everything was in both English and German other than the armoury which was only in German.

Absolutely wonderful! Unfortunately the armory has next to no English subtitles, however the Instrument section and the World Exhibition sections do. The instrument section surprised me the most! I didn’t know the history of music can be such fun. The best part was the hands-on experience one could get with special replicas of a clavichord and other niche instruments replicated for the museum. The armory is splendid! You can see not only different fashions of armor, but also the size of different historical figures! There is also horse armor and child armor - how fascinating! A small section on falconry was also interesting. The museum is great at exhibiting things old and new. There was a temporary exhibition on bees which was very informative. Generally speaking a great museum, a bit underrated compared to Kunsthistorisches and Natural History Museum but it should not be!

The armory and musical instruments (included in the ticket) collections are the most impressive I’ve ever visited, anywhere. Skip the Weltmuseum if you’re just visiting Vienna and focus on these two. In the armory (Hofjagd) you can find splendid armors and weapons owned by some of the greatest characters in European history. Just one fabulous example (among hundreds) is the helmet of Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero who defended his country against the ottomans in the 15th century. In the musical collection you can find some of the oldest and most splendid instruments on display anywhere in the world. The Renaissance section is simply astonishing. THE FREE AUDIO GUIDE APP CALLED WELTMUSEUM WIEN (in German, English and Italian) IS A MUST!! With it you can truly understand the exceptional quality of the exhibitions. Should really be better advertised as it is by far the most underrated attraction in Vienna.

The Weltmuseum is a triumph in every regard: the building itself is a work of art with the most perfect atrium I’ve ever seen: Golden Proportions of polished white marble point to allegorical frescos around the skylight. Brilliantly curated, bringing together the very best of many different genres, the collection grabs you and will most likely make you miss your next appointment. I can’t wait to visit again. And again!

My experience at Weltmuseum Wien The biggest museum in whole Vienna. With sections starting from old music instruments to military suits from the empires of the 16th century. This museum has a café bar aswell and of course clean bathrooms. I really liked the Skanderberg helmet and sword. The program with the qr codes was nice too. Don’t worry, you’re allowed to make photos. Let’s talk about the service. Personally I think the service is just straight up rude. One lady was friendly, but the rest was a catastrophic. The lady in the lobby started being moody after I just asked herto repeat herself and the guards weren’t any better. Now let’s move on to the financial part. In terms of all they got to offer Weltmuseum Wien offers reasonable prices. For children the entry fee is free, for adults about 18€ and seniors about 16€. Overall my experience here was quite pleasant. I’m quite satisfied.Highly recommended.

This museum is just amazing and is an absolutely stunning building. When visiting here allow a full day at least as there is so much to see. The Armoury is vast, with many full suits of armour. They have models of horses with riders on their backs all in full armour. There is a section just for music. There are so many variations on instruments, with full pianos etc.. They have a science fiction section, a section on Japanese calligraphy and general history. The cafe on the lower level is set in the hall of columns which is breathtaking to see. The ladies who served us spoke perfect English and were very polite and attentive. This place is a must see when in Vienna

Our eyes are always familiar with the historical, traditional and etymological objects in Europe and the Middle East. In this museum, there are objects from parts of the world that we do not know much about. For example, they included very interesting and unfamiliar objects belonging to Eskimos, Aztecs, Aborigines, African and North American Indians. Those, like me, whose travel experience is limited to Europe and the Middle-Near East should definitely visit this museum. This place creates a desire to go to new places.

It’s easy to see why the Museum of Ethnology was voted Vienna’s best museum, recently. It houses a truly fantastic collection of artefacts from around the world, from art, textiles, weaponry and much more. Unlike other museums which skirt around the fact of colonialism (and indeed the great thefts of both culture, people and treasures) the MoE goes into great effort to explain the artefacts’ country of origin’s link to colonialism and the effect of it. It’s truly a fascinating insight into not just global history and the history of these invaded countries, but our own shameful social and military history.

Collection of art and craft from all over the world. The building is amazing itself. Old imperial palace. Made me reflect about the precious this tribal treasures are for their original Homeland, and how they look today all together and piled up. Specially the original crown of Moctezuma. I saw the replica in Mexico and the original in Vienna.

Would be more accurate to call it the world armory museum as half of the museum houses knight armors from times gone past, but still a very interesting place to go. Also, random old music instruments. Interesting bunch of stuff 🙂

The building itself is an attraction, but for my first visit, I went to the special exhibit on Steppe and Silk Road and found many interesting items and pieces of history. There is also a special exhibit called (Un)learning Racism for which we had an excellent guide. So much to learn and unlearn about racism so that we can make our world more kind and caring. I hope to visit again for the permanent exhibits.

Now, if you have ever asked me whether I would enjoy a certain museum in Vienna (the capital of museums), where half of the enormous space is occupied by middle centuries knights’ armour, and the other half - ancient musical instruments - I would probably have diverted my steps to some of the other more famous museums such as Albertina or Belvedere. And this, I would have missed one of the most fascinating and extraordinary rare exhibitions! I am so glad a friend of our recommended the Weltmuseum! It is very close to the Vienna opera, and yet - not as popular, strangely enough. Everything about this museum is extraordinary: starting with the building, the decorum, the luxury, the curating of the art, the space, the plentiful information, the fascinating exhibits! The armour part of the museum shows armour from different military groups, from different centuries. Most interesting are the full body armours - the variety of design, the skilful handwork and the quality of art even in what was then a soldier uniform is marvellous. Even more fascinating g were the 10-15rooms of musical instrument starting from the very first rough wooden bows and pipes and going through all the innovations of the 15-19 century of all music groups instruments - from keyboards to strings to woodwinds. One can even play on a few of the well-preserved keyboard instruments. One can see what the piano looks and sounded like in Bach’s, Hayden’s, Beethoven’s and Chopin’s times. There is so much information about the variety of constructions, systems, manufacturers, composers and performers, one feels better educated at the museum then attending a one year course on the subject. Highly recommended!!

An enriching and thought-provoking experience through a vast variety of cultures from around the world 🌍 There was an especially large amount of artifacts from the native American culture 🪓 I was shocked to find out about Hawaiian and other cultures that I never knew about or saw their tools or ways of clothing. Highly recommended ✨

An interesting museum with some exhibits that vary greatly in their directions. We visited mainly in order to attend the science fiction exhibition that is currently on and found the pieces to be fascinating and insightful. Guides spoke decent English and were helpful, as well as all other staff. Entrance fees and shop prices are high, which is the only downside.

It’s a beautiful museum, visiting during afternoon ~2-3 hours before closing makes the experience more enjoyable, there are less people around. The entrance is not free for Mexicans since the beginning of 2023, the personal didn’t mention if it’s going to be again in the future.

Incredible collection!!! My favorite museum in Vienna so far. I was so exhausted by the end of the first floor I did just a walk through of the hall of armor and instrument collection upstairs. The artwork of Nepalese migrant workers killed while abroad was incredible, terrible and jarring. I was also very moved by the doll left by the people of Tierra del Fuego, who were exterminated by means of colonial invasion and genocide, with the last of their people dying in the ‘70s.

Beautiful inner architecture. A wide variety of cultural artifacts from all across the world. Specially recommend the Mayan section and the Japanese one. So,first the positive : -I love the building and the architecture. -You can enter for free with the annual ticket from the KHM. -A great selection of artifacts chosen in a diverse way - friendly and helpful staff - a nice café and bistro - free foldable chairs to take with you However it was quite confusing for me to find the exhibition I was interested in. Also, it was a little noisy. Not a recommendation from me, but surely a nice option for rainy days

We had a couple hours left in Vienna and wandered into this museum almost at random. Most of the displays seem to be from long ago, focusing on ancient ancestors that migrated from other parts of the world. They do have almost an entire floor dedicated to suits of armor, swords, etc. that I enjoyed.

(Translated by Google) The enforced sound through extremely loud club music in the front at the corner of the Burgtor until the evening hours (Helden Bar), where you play the whole place at such a level that your ears fall off, is a huge impertinence and a joke for this public location. Every time I pass there I ask myself whether there is a permit for this at all? You screw up everyone - except for the apparently already deaf guests - the ambience! (Translated by Google) There is not much left to say. It is a very large museum. If you actually take the time, you will surely find a lot of knowledge and can spend at least 3 hours in the museum. Unfortunately the first floor was closed and will only open again from August 1st, 2020. Nevertheless, we spent a total of 3 hours on the ground floor and mezzanine. Of course there was a short break with a game of chess - which, incidentally, can be found in the section of Arab culture. The staff were very nice and the ticket is not too expensive with a price of 12 € (reduced 9 € / free for students). Apart from the sometimes very creaky floors, I am very impressed and look forward to the next visit :) 4/5 stars (Original) Bleibt nicht viel zu sagen.

It's fine. But a bit haotic. Dont have understandable flow throught compositions and description of the time & stories about items. One of the museums where are placed bunch stuff together and dont have information of what are you looking at, why it's here and why it's special. Like - 10 random carpets/wooden heads/arrows...cool. Why? Who? What is the difference? Material? Time? Usage? What type of people had access of such? They group similar items together, but dont provide information about item, usage, why it's meaningful. About the country and time in general. ☹️ Audio guide is total waste of money. Very hard to use, and dont have "see something you like enter number and listen about it". It's rather 'guide to get to highlight' and if want to know more - have 5 clicks to scroll and listen to 1 minute video or audio file what dont give any inside. Or just text to read - i want to listen and look at the item, not to read short text from device. Come on. Also have to go specific route..skipping all other things. Very very bad for good museum experience. They have interactive multimedia screens through exhibition...but again, have to click around to get some information. Maybe kids would happy, but... I really wish they would place 'audio numbers' next to items. And provide easy access and interesting background and item information. I would prefer less things placed together, but some more details, stories, information of artist, the item, the leader of country/time, history... Dissapointing. Saw something but not sure what. :(

Excellent guided, personalized tour that was designed as conversations around various objects we wanted to learn more about. In one of the museum rooms there was even a wall where people could leave thoughts. The amazingly beautiful entrance area includes a cafe that makes great home-baked bread.

I found the Aztec exhibition particularly interesting, which provided a good insight into this fascinating culture. A must for anyone who wants to broaden their horizons. I went here for one reason, the Scanderbeg helmet and sword but there are a bunch other cool items to view too. It would really help if they had an English translation for the labels because bot everyone has time to take the audio tour. The staff are super friendly though, and I would always go back.

Austria’s largest anthropological museum located on Ringstrasse near Hofburg Palace. Here you can find objects and art from allover the world giving you an idea of how people used to live, work, and how they used to dress. The museum also houses the Imperial armory and an extensive collection of historical musical instruments. Would recommend 2-3 hours to visit.

  • 5/5 Alek K. 1 year ago on Google
We had a short excursion in the museum. The building as it is looks great. Collection of objects from all over the world looks amazing. Special note - there’s no colonial acquisitions, everything was bought in different countries. You can find domestic and ceremonial items of different cultures, present now and vanished.

  • 5/5 Gina G. 1 year ago on Google
It's a huge museum with a vast collection of artifacts, armour stuff and musical instruments wing. The 3.5 hour we spent there was definitely not enough for that :D

  • 5/5 Taras H. 7 months ago on Google
The museum houses an extensive collection of exhibits from various cultures, including knight's armor and musical instruments. Some of the exhibits even offer interactive opportunities for visitors to play with

  • 4/5 Brian P. 8 months ago on Google
I only visited the armory and musical instrument museum, but that was fantastic. The armory contained countless early modern suits of armor, including several belonging to the Hapsburg holy Roman emperors. Skanderberg’s (famous Albanian general/hero) helmet is also here. The musical instrument museum was also incredible. Seeing a Stainer string quartet and an Amati violin is amazing, as were the early fortepianos from the 18th century. My only criticism is that the museum was very hot! Austria needs to invest in installing air conditioning in its museums. Summer happens here too!

The current Sci-Fi exhibition is very interesting. You could really spend all day here, especially if you're interested in history and diverse cultures.

  • 5/5 Yin Shan H. 5 months ago on Google
Absolutely world class. They took the palace of the Habsburgs and turned it into a museum with something everyone would enjoy. Adjacent to a collection of musical instruments including a piano that the Schumanns and Brahms owned is one of the world's largest collections of armour, including jousting knights. Downstairs is a special exhibition featuring Black Panther, Princess Leia, and other stalwarts of modern culture... You can easily spend a day here. Shell out for the audio guide and you'll hear explanations of the exhibits alongside details of the rooms of the palace during the Habsburgs' reigns. Well worth the extra eddies.

Great museum with a lovely collection. I specially enjoyed the temporary Sci-Fi exhibition. I took a long time to see everything and at some point it got tiring for me, but I definitely don’t regret going!
