Lots and lots of old musical instruments, with good English descriptions. Learned a lot. There were a few replicas for hands on trying too.

Nice to walk around and see old instruments from days past. Just unfortunate that some rooms were closed due to maintenance.

Beautiful architecture flanked by other buildings of similar style. Most people wouldn't go in, as I noticed that most tourists would simply take a picture here and leave.

Amazing collection of old instruments dating back hundreds of years... with your ticket you can visit other parts of the Weltmuseum ("world museum") in Vienna's center too!

The Museum of Old Musical Instruments in the Hofburg Palace has a rich collection of stringed and keyboard instruments. Its entrance is at the western end of the palace. It works from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but for different seasons this working time may be different. Day off is Wednesday. I visited on a Sunday around 3pm and it wasn't very busy. If you browse quickly it will take you about 40 minutes, but if you are a hobbyist and browse thoroughly about an hour and a half. Of course, you can spend much more time if you have it.

An impressive collection of old musical instruments throughout their development till 20th century. Here you can experience a music time travel: see well preserved wind instruments from their early wooden (and not only) stage, gradually becoming flutes, oboes, trumpets, trombones etc as we know and play them nowadays. In parallel, follow the evolution of string instruments to the present shapes, with an -non surprisingly - emphasis on orchestra strings family: from violas and violins to the cellos and double basses. Last but not least, the Keyboard collection is a must seen! Well preserved clavichords and spinets, as well as the early stage pianofortes to a very interesting collection of pianos of different sizes and shapes. A specially modified keyboard can be played so as to give you an idea of old sounding keyboards. Of course, expect to see some not so well known variations of common instruments, as well as some nearly bizarre ideas that came at some point to really manufactured instruments that produced sound. In the same exhibition, yet obviously on different rooms, you can be triggered to get yourself into an also -depending on your kind of relation to history - more or less impressive collection of past centuries armoury, that presents items from early medieval times till centuries that followed. Knights, kings and soldiers old stories... -You can treat yourself with coffee and or all other necessary eatable treats at the entrance and/or exit of the exhibition rooms, at ground floor.

Absolutely adore it!! . This museum must be visited by each musician at least once in a lifetime! To say more, it impressed me even better, than Wiener Staatsoper did! (That opera by the way was as charming and captivating as I had never seen before in my life.) . The collection is just huge!! I wish I spent there the whole day, because it brings so much information you can't place in your head at once even being a professional ☺️ It embraces not just old epochs, but as well pretty modern time. You gonna be surprised beholding pianos of Brahms, Liszt, Mozart, Schumann, Clara Wieck, Mahler... . I've almost forgotten to say that the museum is interesting not just for musicians. Everyone can spectate unusual instruments of extraordinary shapes and sizes 😂 For example cellos with heads of African women, zebra violins, also some masterpieces of art on the harpsichord decks and just splendid organs 😇

Great museum, the ethnological collection is amazing, only not lit well enough and sometimes it's difficult to see the little details. Also only part of the labels of the items are translated into English so we couldnt understand what are we watching.

The collection houses hundreds of old instruments, and you are even given the chance to play on Clavichords and see how they sound! It was quite awesome!
