Papyrus Collection and Papyrus Museum Vienna

Museum

👍👍 One of the greatest museums I've been in. Located in the city center (obviously 😅) and near some big parks. You can enjoy and earn some knowledge by reading, hearing explanation and even solve some puzzles:) People often mention museum, ancient, papyrus, Egypt, exhibition, worth, collection, small, interesting,

When I think about papyrus I think about Ancient Civilization, especially egyptian one. This museum is a collection of papyruses from all over the world, with just a small part of Egypt. There are some fragments from the “Book of death”. The most interesting part is the end pf the tour. There is a wall with relief drawings where you can put a sheet of paper on top use a pencil and take your own piece of Egypt at home.

Visited in late February 2023. With the Vienna City Card, I paid a reduced price for a ticket. Good exhibition. There is an audio guide and most displays have multilingual descriptions. Visitors learn about the history of papyrus as a material, basic hieroglyphics, use of papyrus in documenting life in ancient Egypt, how papyrus is restored and preserved and how the Austrian National Library became the holder of this papyrus collection. Definitely worth visiting for anyone interested in archives, special collections and ancient Egypt.

PAPYRUS MUSEUM A GIFT FROM THE NILE The power of water in ancient Egypt A very fine little exhibition about water and there are really surprising examples. I was also amazed at how much history and stories can be gleaned from a small piece of written paper. Very nice to see how rich the National Library is in these small valuable artifacts. They fit together wonderfully and, with a little imagination, create a beautiful picture of everyday life in ancient Egypt. An enriching exhibition for people who enjoy reading and are interested in history. But see for yourself...

Would not recommend. Seemingly unpopular museum. To get visitors the staff lures you in as being the main entrance to the national library even though you might look for the state hall. In the end, you have to pay double for the entrance as neither they nor the state hall staff acknowledges that

This museum is a tiny room in the library. If you have a Vienna pass then it might be worth checking out if you're interested in papyrus but I wouldn't go out of my way and pay to see it.

An unmissable museum. The room is small but with a lot of historical content. You will be able to learn how papyri were made, the materials, natural pigments and gums, it has. A room to give workshops to children on a guided tour. It has an elevator and ramps. Bathrooms and lockers They preserve the pieces very well.

An interesting place, a lot of collections of various engravings and writings. There is a small entry fee, but unfortunately many of the exhibits are described only in German.

A little gem among the museums. Small museum located in the National library building near Hofburg (Museum district) Well worth the visit - you can enjoy the exhibit in maybe 30 mins. Entry for 5 eur. Thursdays in the summer open until 9pm which is great! Helpful staff. It shows some nicely explained papyri (the relevance in their time, stories behind them, context). You can watch several nice informative videos on how the collection came about or the papyri restoration process. There are some cool exhibits and hands-on pieces for the school groups. Most of the papyri is from the late Egyptian times (Coptic, Greek, even Arabic) which is logical if you think about the origins of the collection but they are complemented by a a couple of beautiful older scrolls and later Roman map or temporary topical exhibits. All in all very interesting for all linguists and nerds :)

I visited the Papyrus Museum with my little daughter during fall break. We thought it was great that there was something for children as my daughter is very interested in ancient Egypt. I can only recommend! Thanks for the lovely afternoon!

That was one power struggling power abusive bald man who did not give me a good welcome greeting. Quite the opposite.Provides no service, just arrogance and dismissive behaviour.

Nice museum! But, I want to make a remark. We were there on 24th. A terrible woman at the entrance desk. No service at all, on the question if the Vienna pass was good to go in she acted if it was a stupid question and made a quick remark to her collegae. That is not the way to go, she has to think about getting a job with more sattisfaction.

As someone who likes languages, this was an AWESOME little place. Not a huge museum by any means, but definitely enough to occupy me for a little while, and for only €5 with two other museum admissions, it was a bargain. All signs were in German and more than half in English as well. They had Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Egyptian papyruses, and it was organized nicely to teach you all the ways they were used in ancient times. I even got a little square of papyrus when I entered to keep as a souvineer!

Small museum but with fairly extensive collection of papyri. The documents are very interesting and show all different aspects of life in ancient antiquity. Worth a visit.

I was disappointed that almost the most important papyrus in the museum, that is, the Book of the Dead, has no English panel text explanation, while most of others have. However, i was amused by one papyrus on property sale agreement in which it ends with "may the consequences mentioned in the Apocalypse befall on the one who dissolves this agreement". 😊

Not worth visiting unless you get access to it via a museum pass as its artefacts are limited. It does hold a vast piece of papyrus but this piece could have easily be a part of a larger museum.

Very good display and worth the €5 entry. A lot of interesting things on show and for once the interactive displays are incredibly informative.

Small but fascinating museum. Cheap to enter, information is all in multiple languages and lots of little ways to make it interactive and the staff is very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

It's a little bit stifling inside. You can’t understand this exhibition without any guide)

Nice little exhibition in the Hofburg, don’t miss it after you have been in the Nationalbibliothek (it’s included in the ticket). Lots of info to read, but it will you only take one hour to go through.

It holds the world's largest exhibition of documents. From 3000 years of Egyptian history. 400 original objects

Really interesting collection, but the museum attendant made us feel very uncomfortable while we were there. He kept pacing and standing close to wherever we were in the museum, tapping his foot. It was really conspicuous, distracting and took our focus away from enjoying the exhibition.
