Following the enlargement of Vienna after the demolition of the city walls in the 1860s, the Hofburg had its last great expansion. An Imperial Forum (Kaiserforum) was planned, in which a two-winged structure reaching beyond the Ring Road, with the twin museums (Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum) as flanks and terminating at the old Imperial Mews (the Hofstallungen, not to be confused with the much older Stallburg) of Fischer von Erlach. The project was led by Gottfried Semper and later by Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer. The museums were completed in 1891, but construction of the rest of the forum dragged on slowly and conflicted since because of rising costs and no real function could be found for the enormous construction project. In 1913, the south-west wing, the New Castle (Neue Burg), was completed. However, the Imperial Forum was never completed and remains a torso. The New Castle wing today houses a number of museums (the Ephesos Museum, the Collection of Arms and Armour, the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments, and the Museum of Ethnology) as well as some reading rooms of the national library. The Hofburg Congress Centre is also located here.

During a great guided tour I learned that Emperor Franz Joseph built this building as a guest house. Tip: Have a cup of coffee in the amazingly beautiful entrance area before or water you experience the objects of the Welt museum. Try also the interactive wall where you can share your thoughts with others.

Was a great museum to visit. Loved seeing the imperial armoury and all the old weapons and armour on display. There were a couple of other exhibitions which were interesting explaining Austrian history around the world. Strongly recommend visiting this museum and enjoying all it has to offer. Reasonable price for everything there is inside of it as well.

It's a great attraction but really isn't worth the 7 euros to enter. You can walk around it in 2 minutes. They do have some beautiful butterflies and the entire place very well maintained.

We didn't have time to go in but it was one of the more interesting buildings in the area. I first noticed it when we were in the Burggarten and then saw the better side from the Heldenplatz. The curvature of the building was quite interesting and it would have been nice to take a look inside.

Day or night, the architecture of this building will make you dream about the ages it was built, and it will take you back in time for a few seconds. "Neue Burg" is the newest wing of Hofburg Palace, and part of the monumental Kaiserforum; it was designed in 1869 by Gottfried Semper & Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer the emperor Franz Joseph. The Neue Burg is home to the three Neue Burg Museums. The Sammlung Alter Musik Instrumente (Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments) contains a wonderfully diverse array of instruments. The Ephesos Museum features artefacts unearthed during Austrian archaeologists' excavations at Ephesus in Turkey between 1895 to 1906. The Hofjägd und Rüstkammer (Arms and Armour) museum contains ancient armour dating mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The architecture is just stunning on this building. Take a moment to wander around and take it all in. It's very much a part of Vienna's historic past.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record reviewing all the museums I visited while in Vienna. This one is just as beautiful as the others. The building itself is breathtaking! Inside takes you back 100 years.

The armor presentation and the music instruments were really impressive. The palace itself is even more.

The building has superb architecture! I have visited the Ephessos exhibit which was quite nice and the Austrian history from 1918 onwards exhibit ( I didn’t find this very immersive or well presented and I got bored quickly and moved on)

We had booked our tickets ahead of time, but still encountered huge crowds. The hallways were narrow and dark, and filled with tour groups who completely blocked access to see anything good. Go to The Belvedere Palace instead, as it is a much better option.

The building is more interesting than the museums inside, except the medieval armour collection.

Typical example of the glorious Viennese imperial architecture. Beautiful marble staircases, lavish ceilings, luxurious spaces. Definitely worth a visit, but nothing exceptional. Exhibits vary, and are often culturally relevant.
