Really not your everyday classic history museum. Very interactive and visual, with a lot of food for thought and good bilingual captions. Note the audio guide (free service) is only available in German, yet the captions and text available are more than enough. I am not sure it would be interesting for young kids and toddlers, but they offer a quizz and a rally for the older ones. The current temporary exhibition is thrilling and the adjacent Ephos Museum is fascinating. Totally recommend.

The best historical museum I’ve ever been to. Loved how different academic debates (ie. about the 1934-1938 dictatorship and it’s naming, about whether Austria was a victim or a co-perpetrator of Nazi crimes, etc) are reflected and how actively the visitor is invited to participate and think for themselves. Loved how up to date it was and how it covered the most recent events in Austrian history. Loved to see how items of daily use or simple pictures are used to tell the story of Austria’s society. Shortly - a must-visit spot.

Amazing interactive museum with a lot of information about contemporary Austrian history. 95% of signs and materials have English translation. There is a good balance between political, ecomic, social, and cultural history. You can listen to music of different periods, watch short video reels, immerse into the texts, photos and maps of various historical periods.

I spent four hours here yesterday and learnt a lot about Austria, a country I knew very, very little about. The museum has a lot to offer and the price is fair. Plus, it is housed in a stunningly beautiful building. I'm not usually much of a museum person (I rarely visit them while travelling), but I'm glad I did this one.

It is not a museum, more an exhibition, interesting to witness Austria’s history

A bit disappointed. Most parts of the museum were closed. Only Ancient Greece and ancient Roman part was open, as well as Second World War related interactive “exhibitions” that constituted in using half broken headphones to listen to recorded personal accounts of people who lived through the war. Some stairs led to dead ends.

Good information about the history of Austria after the fall of the monarchy. A bilingual explanation (German and English) for most of the exhibit is of great help. The signage for the previous name of the town 'Fugging' is displayed here. Conchita Wurst (who won the Eurovision contest) / gown is there too.

The ongoing exhibition 'End of Testimony' portrays a superb perspective on the complex relationship between holocaust survivors and their interviewers while trying to answer the question: How do societies make use of this legacy in the future? Very informative array of artefacts and very friendly staff.

The Haus der Geschichte Österreich (abbreviated HdGÖ, proper spelling: hdgö) is an Austrian contemporary history museum in the Neue Burg (Hofburg) in Vienna. Its founding director is historian Monika Sommer-Sieghart. It opened on 10 November 2018 around the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Austria.

We came here as the entry was free admission on national Austrian day, we waited in line about 40min. The museum or at least the areas we were able to see weren't interesting.. They only had some Roman statues and stones which coming from Italy, we see every day and every museum so they didn't have much. Some things about the world war and some papyrus from Arab countries which again if Arab you see them every day in Arab countries. Beside the war they don't actually have any culture as their culture is based on the Romans and Greek.

Simply one of the most detailed, researched and thought provoking museums I have been to. A great history for people interested to learn about Austria in the 20th century. The critical analysis to how the nation has identified with this period is thoughtful and engaging. Best museum I saw in my visit to Vienna. Only go if you're interested in this period however, less flashy than the other Imperial ones.

If you have much time and would like to get lots of information about Austrian history, you will need to visit this museum. I agree with other comments that it’s a little bit chaotic.

  • 1/5 Marije H. 2 years ago on Google
Very chaotic and confusing. Chronological order (or any other logical order) is hard to find. It seemed like a incoherent collection of stories and pictures that together barely make up a story. It's only about the last 100 years, but this chaotic collection of information in two rooms didn't feel like it even covered that. I felt overwhelmed by the lack of structure, but completely underwhelmed by how the horrors of everything around WWII and the role of Austrian people in this were told. Not worth €8.

Great double language exhibition about the history of Austria.

Unfortunately negative. One of the worst museums ever. It only starts before the First World War and for the last twenty years there is -two bunks- a costume by Conchitta Wurst as an event. Simply embarrassing. We have achieved a lot in research, Nobel Prize winners etc.

Small, but has everything that a museum could offer. They shown and explained things about Austria in about ~100 years ago. Guided tours were also available there.

This is a review about the service, not about the facility l and it's content. As we wanted to enter a security guard told us the national library is next door, on remark we w as by to visit Haus der Geschichte Österreichs he pointed out the cashier's office is unstaffed. I pointed out there's web ticket console next to the cashier's office. Anyway, we needed to leave entrance since he explained he's just the security guard and we have to come later. We waited 20min but nobody staffed the office and we left. My complain is due to the bad service and an empty box office even after 20min waiting. No complain about the security guard, he did his job and was respectful.

easily one of the nicest museums/exhibitions I've ever been to! Modern, highly informative, interactive, bittersweet. Only 3 halls, but SO much data in form of videos, audio recordings, photos from private collections etc. One can immediately see that immense amount of time and energy was invested into the planning and creation of this space. I really enjoyed spending there my Sunday morning :)

Having gone to the Sisi Museum in the morning in this one in the afternoon I much preferred this one. It’s a shame it wasn’t more popular as it does have an interesting perspective on Austrian history. I found the exhibitions informative although I would’ve liked a bit more on the years between 1945 and 1955. The Second museum which you get access to has a great collection of Greek and Roman art although it’s a bit strange that the two are juxtaposed together. Absolutely fantastic building as well.

Really interesting museum, everything is translated in english Complete history of this young country, from its creation in 1918 to nowadays

  • 5/5 H d. 1 year ago on Google
What more could you want? The building is unreal, the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures and artifacts are beautiful and the exhibition focusing on Austria from 1918 is brilliant, very informative and educational. It would be a pleasure to walk around in there even if it didn't have anything on display, it's so beautiful. It's also great to have something to do on Sundays when most things are shut.

Stunning experience to learn Austrian modern history. I got to listen to the music for a new era. Amazing classical and modern musics that you cannot easily get a chance to listen. (:

Great museum covering contemporary History of Austria, since 1918. Really interesting content displayed in a nice and understandable way. You also get access to Ephesos exhibition and temporary exhibitions located in amazing Palace Halls. I would recommend not to miss the QR scan at the ticket office for free audio guides: these are very well designed and guide you through the expositionto the most important points for 45-50min visits. You can choose between 3 pathways depending on your interest: politics and democracy, individuals and biographies, or Environment.

Amazing and very detailed museum related to Austrian modern history. I would suggest first visiting the "Heeresgeschichtliches Museum" (Arsenal museum) and then this one.

Becoming a constitutional democracy is an important part of Austrian history but unfortunately this museum is quite small and low on details and exhibitions. I expected more
