Flak towers (German: Flaktürme) is a concrete bunker that is placed in a city that were large anti-aircraft gun blockhouses used by the Luftwaffe to prevent overflights of key areas in certain cities in World War II. They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of people and to coordinate air defense. This paticular Flakturm is of the second generation and is curenly used as an art storage so you will not be able to get in. This bunker provided space in the largest tower itself for 20,000 people so they could shelter during bombings and there was space for storage of goods. The bunker was equipped with Flak anti aircraft guns These large towers were built during the Second World War in the cities Berlin (Germany), Hamburg (Germany) and Vienna (Austria). Each Flak tower complex consisted of a G-Tower (Gefechts-Turm) and L-Tower (Leit-Turm). The complexes consisting of 3 generations: this Tower is a Generation 2-G Generation 1: G-Tower - 70.5 x 70.5 x 39 meters - with eight 128 mm guns and several 20, 30 and 37 mm guns. L-Tower - 50 x 23 x 39 meters - usually equipped with sixteen 20 mm guns. Generation 2: G-Tower - 57 x 57 x 41.6 meters - equipped with eight 128 mm guns and sixteen 20 mm guns. L-Tower - 50 x 23 x 44 meters - equipped with forty 20 mm guns

(Translated by Google) The battle tower is the largest of all Viennese flak towers. Its walls are generally two meters thick, but about seven meters on the top three floors. Outside there is a corridor around the ground floor, which means that the total area is 57.0 m × 57.0 m, while the actual side length of the tower is 10 m shorter. The surrounding walls of the gun turrets are four meters thick. The protective cover over the eighth floor is between 3.80 m and 4 m thick. Originally there were 8.8 cm twin guns on the turret, then 10.5 cm guns, which were later replaced by the 12.8 cm guns. Up to the third floor the flak tower was used as a bunker for civilians, on the fourth floor there was a hospital, on the fifth there was a heating and ventilation system and on the sixth part of the Ostmark aircraft engine plant. Only the seventh and eighth floors were used by the military, and the seventh floor also housed the Gau Propaganda Directorate, the district administration, the Vienna radio station and Siemens & Halske. It was originally planned that the Reich Defense Commissioner and his task force would move in here, but the Gauleitung insisted on a bunker outside the city.

Interesting tower. Originally used as anti aircraft defense. Interior housed up to 20,000 people. The contrast of the purely concrete structures surrounded by ornate facades of times past, gives them a forebodence. Feels like a Pink Floyd movie.

Grim reminders of a dark period in history, more effort could be made at explaining them in situ. It's not surprising there is hardly any mention of them in tourist info, hidden away and wished away, these behemoths overshadow the parks they are in. A pity that more positive uses haven't been found, to reappropriate the history of these relics; the only exception being Haus des Meeres in the other end of town.

Wish there was more about the history on site. Only three of these were built. Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna. No idea what was vital in this area. Nice park for relaxing.

A hidden gem. Take a detour off the main street and find a pair of ww2 flak towers still standing. Worth seeing and reading about as you do so.

(Translated by Google) The building is super interesting, but it can't be visited. They are ashamed of that part of their history and that is a mistake, the new generations have to know what happened in the II GM (Original) El edificio es súper interesante, pero no se puede visitar.
