The Schwarzenbergplatz is one of the most important squares in central Vienna. One prominent feature of the square is the Hochstrahlbrunnen, a large fountain that looks like a geyser with pseudo-natural rocks in a circular pool. Sandwiched between the Palais Schwarzenberg and the Hochstrahlbrunnen, you find the Soviet memorial "Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee" - its shape and array corresponds with both, Palais and fountain. However, the Hochstrahlbrunnen is much older. It was built to celebrate the construction of the first water pipeline from the Styrian alps to Vienna in 1873. In the decades before, the water supplies from various springs in the Vienna Woods and through the Wien River had proved to be insufficient for the ever-increasing population of Vienna.

Lovely fountain with plenty of space around to sit and relax. Hochstrahlbrunnen (high-jet fountain) stands there to commemorate Vienna's first spring water pipeline in 1873. A special feature of the Hochstrahlbrunnen is that at night it is lit by 365 multicolored lights - representing each day of the year - not to be missed at night!

The fountain is really nice to look at. When I visited in the morning, there was a rainbow above it. It was such a cool sight to see.

Recommended by our hotel and well worth the wander out. Crowded with local Viennese and full of life, so a good place to have a relax after a day's sightseeing.

Beautiful and majestic place. This is a monument to the soldiers who died during the liberation of Austria from the Nazis. The monument was built in 1945, and still retains its beauty.

Great fountain and square. Nice to sit there and chill. Soviet monument and probably Stalin's quote is pretty killing the vibe. Ukraine's colors behind it are nice though. Slava Ukraine!

(Translated by Google) The Hochstral fountain, located on the Schwarzenbergplatz square of the Austrian capital, was built on the occasion of the opening of the 1st Vienna water pipeline, which took place after four months of construction on October 24, 1873 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Anton Gabrielli, the construction contractor for the water pipeline, donated 200,000 kroons for the construction of the fountain, which was built by contractor Gustav Brook at the request of the City of Vienna. In 1886/87, extensive discussions took place over the tidying up of the Schwarzenbergplatz, which resulted in the renovation of the fountain. Hochstralbrunnen's sketches by the notable sculptors Viktor Tilgner (1844-1896) and Rudolf Weir (1847-1914) were presented to the public at the Vienna House of Artists (German: Wiener Künstlerhaus) at the end of January 1887, but no decision was made in their favor. Hochstralbrunnen was later transformed into a light fountain and opened on 23 June 1906. At night, it glows in red, pink, yellow, purple, blue and green. On the edge of the pool, there are 365 small fountains symbolizing the days of the year. The six fountains between the edge of the pool and the inner islet, as well as the islet itself, correspond to seven days of the week. Twelve high rays symbolize months, 24 low - hours of the day, 30 rays in the islet located in the middle - days of the month. In a green space in the direction of Prinz-Eugen-Straße, there is a monument created by Franz Seifert to the geologist and paleontologist Eduard Suess, who in 1836 as an advisor municipalities called for the construction of the Vienna drinking water pipeline. To the south of the Hochstral fountain there is a monument to the Red Army, erected in 1945.

Nice relaxing place to take a small break when walking from Belvedere into town. Kids will enjoy running around in the spray if it is a windy day (my daughter did!) there is also a drinking water fountain at the edge of the square to refill your water bottle with refreshing mountain water.

(Translated by Google) A beautifully and exquisitely crafted fountain, which in the period from early spring to late autumn impresses with its beauty the inhabitants of Vienna and numerous tourists. The only thing that is disfiguring is the beauty, it is the Soviet monument and Stalin's quote carved in the marble nearby. (Original) Pięknie i kunsztownie wykonana fontanna, ktora w okresie od wczesnej wiosny do późnej jesieni zachwyca swym pięknem mieszkańców Wiednia i licznych turystów. An amazing find. Walking down Rennweg, past the Belvedere palaces, we stumbled upon this amazing military monument. Stunning, and cooling, as it was a very hot day and the spray from the fountain gave us some sweet relief. A great place to kick off an informal walking walking tour of Vienna.

Hochstrahlbrunnen is a fairly large circular fountain, but with a rather simple design. I cam out here to Schwarzenbergplatz to see the Soviet War memorial and saw the fountain as well. I wasn't all that impressed. I was told that there's a light show at sunset, but I didn't see that either and the sun had definitely set.
