Originally known as the Ruin of Carthage, the Roman Ruin is a set of follies that was designed by the architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and erected as an entirely new architectural feature in 1778. Fully integrated into its parkland surroundings, this architectural ensemble should be understood as a picturesque horticultural feature and not simply as a ruin, which due to lack of maintenance it had increasingly grown to resemble prior to its recent restoration. The fashion for picturesque ruins that became widespread with the rise of the Romantic movement soon after the middle of the 18th century symbolized both the decline of once great powers and the preservation of the remains of a heroic past. Erected at the same time not far from the Roman Ruin, the Obelisk Fountain was intended to complete the iconographic program of the park at Schönbrunn as a symbol of stability and permanence. The Roman Ruin consists of a rectangular pool enclosed by a massive arch with lateral walls, evoking the impression of an ancient edifice slowly crumbling into the ground. In the pool in front of the ruin is a seemingly haphazard arrangement of stone fragments supporting a figural group which symbolizes the rivers Vltava and Elbe.

The Roman Ruin is a set of follies built in 1778. They are not really ancient but the fashion of the time for picturesque ruins that became widespread with the rise of the Romantic movement symbolized both the decline of once great powers and the preservation of the remains of a heroic past.

The Roman Ruin in Schönbrunn Palace Gardens is a fascinating architectural feature designed to resemble the ruins of ancient Rome. It adds a unique and historical element to the palace grounds. This structure provides a sense of grandeur and history and is a must-see when visiting Schönbrunn Palace. It's a captivating piece of architectural history that enriches the overall experience of exploring the palace and its surroundings.

Such a gorgeous piece of art! Even if you're not big on history (how can you in such a city?) - please read the sign to the right of this beautiful spot to gain true understanding of why each and every single element here were designed the way they are. It's such an enriching experience and I've learned so much during my stroll through these gardens.

I'm always surprised at what the rich will create for their own amusements. This is a must see if you're visiting the palace complex (which you should). It's very well done and seems so out of place while also fitting in.

An incredibly beautiful and unique piece of art at Schönbrunn Palace. Sidenote, if you are interested in authentic Roman ruins in Vienna, you may want to visit the Military History Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) or the Römersteinbruch (Roman Quarry), which both feature Roman artifacts and exhibits about the Roman presence in Vienna.

The Roman ruins in the Schonbrunn Vienna complex were built in 1778. Therefore they are of course not real Roman ruins, but strongly resemble them. They were built rather to decorate the park. They are located to the east of the other frequented fountain of Neptune along the avenue about 200 meters from it. The opening hours are from 6.30am to 9pm, but I doubt the closing time is that much because the gardens close earlier. GPS- 48.18100,16.31340

A good sight to see as you are making your way down the gardens. We went in winter and they had let the pond overgrow with weds which ruined the view a bit.

The fact that it is artificial is just HILARIOUS. How wealthy do you have to be to provide yourself with a Roman ruin?

I had actually owned more then a world, whilst others had still be quarrelling about room pricing in Schoenbrunn as apparently revenues from Design Hotels had been declining once it had become known globally what her BND had been often compelled or enabled to do - and I do not mind if others had been charging but is this allowed? I don't think so, but I have a few and in China and even in Lebanon I am hospitably received wherever I live, and they even know my name - two basic functions of the United Nations that before my grandfather had been interested in and then that happened. I am not saying the world is in ruins but from her perspective almost - but that is that I had to say about this, as I don't care that much and I am not intending to bring us back to say Baroque as I had invested into education even in Austria for very long and then I had been ready long ago, and the Annan family also, and then the Kennedy family, and then even Boustany and Arnaud, and that is all that happened whilst everyone else had been fighting. I appreciate that they had been able to tell me what I have and that then is not only in ruins, but that still does not answer if I want that, or simply have it - or even give it to the Annan family backup (Ismail's uncle) but he wants to move to Manchester. I did not say I had given it away, so I believe I have that, but that did not get me that much further.

Interesting artificial Roman ruin in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. It's a pity that you're not allowed to enter it, but I guess that is owed to preserving it as much as possible. So it is a look, don't touch site.

(Translated by Google) During the walk we got there by accident. At the end of the alley on the left, facing the Glirietta. In all these beautiful sculptures it is an ancient ruin off the beaten track. Next to the fountain. Visible from the left wing of the palace. (Original) Podczas spaceru trafiliśmy tam przypadkiem. (Translated by Google) I like the fact that the high lattice is placed only in the back of the Roman ruin, and in the front part a beautiful iron railing prevents the progression to the rock and rock formation. The pond is clean and well maintained. The group of figures in the middle protrudes impressively from the whole in the front part. The rear part with the large bow is an important conclusion of this backdrop.
