Flakturm VII G-Turm Augarten

Historical landmark

👍👍 Remnants of air defense during WWII. Only a handful of towers of this size were built during WWII and placed in large/strategic cities in Germany/Austria. This tower (the larger of the two in Augarten) is the G-tower which would have housed the anti-aircraft artillery. Empty today, and not open to... A grim reminder of a darker past. Across Vienna are the remains of flak towers. These were gigantic constructions of steel and concrete, built to house anti-aircraft guns to shoot down Allied aircraft in World War II. They were built like fortresses, and were almost impregnable. After the war, these hulking monstrosities were too difficult to safely demolish and so many of them have been left standing. A number of them still stand in Vienna, with the tower in Augarten being one of the best preserved. You cannot enter this one, however, it still stands as a memory of darker times that should never be repeated.

This tower (the larger of the two in Augarten) is the G-tower which would have housed the anti-aircraft artillery. Empty today, and not open to the public, it is a visually impressive reminder of the past. It contrasts with the peaceful park where many people exercise, picnic, or just sit and relax.

Very interesting site, the flak tower from WW2 is still in great shape. There are actually 2 in the park. These are the few remaining such towers in Europe. Closed to the public, you can only see from the park. Recommend visiting.

An absolutely shocking sight in Vienna, this massive concrete tower stands above Augarten park, visible from.everywhere in the area. This one used to house the air defense positions. There is also a second tower at the other side of the park, responsible for radar and fire control. Both towers are closed, but can be inspected from the outside from all angles. (The only tower that you can currently (2019) visit from the inside is in Esterházypark.) If you can spare the time, and are interested in history or architecture, this is definitely a place to visit.

Historical landmark gun tower remain from the WWII era, located in the heart of a very large leafy park. If you visit here make sure to visit its twin tower on the north side of the park too (as well as the other two Flak tower pairs across the city).

This monument is proof of power of Nazi German how prepared they were to defend their empire just in case, this tower was a battle station just in case of air invasion, they were able to fire 14km range and those guns were huge,,today it is just a memory and you can't go upstairs :(

(Translated by Google) A treat for lovers of the Second World War. There are only a few such buildings left. It is a unique defensive structure that saved a lot of lives. There is a large park around, the facility is closed and invisible from a distance because it is densely built-up. I was very impressed. It is worth taking a walk here. 10 min. from the nearest metro station.

Fascinating remainder of WW2 infrastructure. The photos on here simply do not do this site justice - it is imposing and gargantuan. There are three pairs of flak towers in the city. This one is not open to the public, but its location allows you to really get a feeling of it in the landscape and sense how it would have been in the 1940s.

Decent spot. You have to climb the wall to get out though. Go with comfortable clothes I guess(?)

I recommend this park, its clean and very well maintained, a nice place for relaxation. The two towers are awe-inspiring structures of brutal engineering. Standing next to them and looking straight up makes them feel even more imposing.

Impressive monument of a terrible part of austrian history. There are two more in Arenbergpark in the 3rd district and a repurposed in Esterhazypark in the 6th district.

If you are tired of looking at the gorgeous buildings and museums, you can take a walk and see the anti-aircraft gun towers left after World War II.

An impressive old tower that was used in the times of WW2. Seems like it should have been used for defense, but it is empty now and closed for visits.

If it hadn't been for Wolf Haas, Brenner would have almost fallen down there. And now everything is bricked up... and you can't see a helicopter anymore.

A monolithic relic of WW2. Anti-aircraft tower built by Germany and operated by the Luftwaffe. The Austrians considered demolishing them but it was more trouble than they were worth, a testament to how well they were constructed. I do believe the locals hate them but they still stand to this day.

Great place for a walk if you're interested in 20th century history. Park in the middle of the beautiful city of Vienna, with two enormous concrete towers built during WWII.

There are actually 2 towers in the park. Go find the other one and play football next to it.

An amazing piece of history. Could use more details about how the place was built and some responsibility taking for the suffering by the Austrian people.
