One of two monuments that can be viewed at Judenplatz is the statue of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, the 18th-century German poet and dramatist whose essays and plays preached tolerance and acceptance and would have been seen as sensitive to the Jewish people of that time. Interestingly, this particular statue is the second dedicated to Lessing and was the work of Siegfried Charoux and was unveiled at Ruprechtskirche in 1968, being moved to this location in 1981. Sadly, it seems the original Lessing monument was removed in 1939 by the National Socialists, melted down and reused to make weaponry. In addition to spending a few minutes to view the Lessing statue, it is worth time viewing and reading about the Holocaust Memorial here a Judenplatz as well. You may also want to visit the Judensplatz Museum while spending time in this area of Vienna.

Why is Lessing facing the memorial to the murdered Austrian Jews and the Jewish museum? Well, it's not just because he was there before, but he was a friend of philosopher Mendelssohn and defended the rights of the Jews and religious tolerance. This got him some of his works banned, reason for which he wrote the play Nathan the Wise.

Just two blocks south from the steps of Am Gestade is the quiet square of Judenplatz. Judenplatz is a significant site in Jewish heritage as there are significant memorials located on this square. The square itself is the center of the Jewish community in the Inner Stadt during the Middle Ages. Today this square contains the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial, as well as the Juselplatz Museum which contains the content of a excavation of an old medieval synagogue that was discovered during the construction of the memorial! Pretty neat!

This is my absolutely favorite square in Vienna because itā€™s very hidden, surrounded by old but beautiful buildings, almost like time travels. Thereā€™s a beer bar at a corner, where you can order a drink and sit all day
