Monument of prince Eugen, one of the greatest generals in Austrian and European history. Habsburgs owe much to this prince from Savoy. Monument of this famous Austrian Frenchman was unveiled in 1865 by Franz Joseph. Eugen offered his service to emperor Leopold I and entered Austrian military when he was refused service in the French military.

This monument stands in tribute to Prince Eugene of Savoy, a member of the House of Savoy and one of the most successful military commanders in the service of Habsburgs. Prince Eugene served three Holy Roman Emperors, Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI, and experience great success in multiple wars against the Ottoman Turks, the French forces of Louis XIV and the War of the Spanish Succession. The monument is an equestrian statue and sits prominently on Heldenplatz in front of Hofburg Palace. The sculpture depicts the Prince on horseback wearing his Field Marshals uniform. THis has both hands on the reins of the horse, which is rearing up on its hind legs. Underneath the horse is a pile of weaponry from the defeated Ottomans. A monumental sculpture. Worth a look if in the area.

The Prinz Eugen Reiter Monument is one of two large scale equestrian statues that face each other in the large and open public square called Heldenplatz (Hero's Square) near the Hapsburg Palace in the city of Vienna. This is a large, bronze sculpture created by German-Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn between 1862-65 of Prinz Eugen Reiter, who was considered one of the finest military generals in the history of the Hapsburg Empire. Here you see Prinz Eugen riding a horse which is rearing upwards. The General is dressed for battle, calm and peering into the distance. The horse stands upon a decorative bronze base, atop a large rectangular-shaped pedestal with bronze inscriptions and the coat of arms of the Savoy at back. The monument stands in front of the Hapsburg Palace facing fellow Equestrian monument to Erzherzog Karl (Archduke Karl) and Volksgarten in the distance.

On the plaza, there are two equestrian statues designed by Anton Dominik Fernkorn with socles by Eduard van der Nüll. The statue of Archduke Charles of Austria, modelled on a popular painting by Johann Peter Krafft, was inaugurated already in 1860. It was meant to glorify the Habsburg dynasty as great Austrian military leaders and underline the leadership of Austria within the German Confederation, though they just had suffered a crushing defeat at the bloody Battle of Solferino. The second statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy was inaugurated in 1865, one year before the Austrian defeat in the Battle of Königgrätz. The Outer Castle Gate on the southside remained standing when the fortification walls were dismantled. Erected in 1824 by Pietro Nobile according to plans designed by Luigi Cagnola, and inaugurated by Emperor Francis I of Austria in the honour of the veterans of the Napoleonic Wars, it was rebuilt as a war memorial in 1933/34 and houses a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Let me tell you the story of this statue which shows one of the greatest generals of his time. Eugène de Savoie was born in Savoie (France) in1663. when he was a teenager he wanted to become a general, but his family wasn't very popular in the court of Versailles, so he was told by the king Louis XIV that he would be a monk. Furious Eugène offered his service to the Austria-Hungarian king, who at this time was struggling fighting against the ottoman empire. The Turks had already conquested Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Bosnia, Albania, Macedonia, Greece and Hungary Thanks to his incredible tactical skills, Eugene de Savoie managed to break the siege of Vienna and kick them out from Hungary and Serbia. He literally changed the history of central Europe, that would have been completely different with the ottoman empire. To thank him for his glorious victories the Austria-Hungarian king gave him a lot of money and a land in Vienna, where Eugène built what is known as the Belvedere and is one of the most visited museums in Vienna. Eugène is the pride of my region of Savoie and I'm furious to see that this statue is not well maintained. Austrians, Hungarians and Europe own him a lot.

He took part in successful wars against the Ottomans. That's not just her life story. The statue of the horse in the garden of the Hofburg Palace represents the crowning of the horse. The only thing that bothers me is that there are a lot of cars parked there and in my opinion somehow destroy the atmosphere. The equestrian statue of Prince Eugen stands in front of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. He is also known as Eugene of Savoy. A nobleman and a soldier. He rose in the military hierarchy to the highest rank of field marshal, although he was not Austrian and held high government posts. He commanded the imperial troops in Hungary during the successful battles with the retreating Turkish armies. He participated in numerous military battles with other opponents of Austria.

Prince Eugene of Savoy was Born in Paris and had close ties to the court of King Louis XIV of France. Even though you couldn’t tell from this statue Eugene had poor physique and comportment, and a clerical career seems likely. However, before his death in 1736 he was one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history, rising to the highest offices in Vienna. ⠀

(Translated by Google) Heldenplatz is a square in the Austrian capital Vienna. There have been many important events here-most notably the German-Austrian merger announced by Hitler in 1938. The Heroes' Square is the outer square of the Hofburg Palace. It was built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It is part of the so-called "Imperial Square" (Kaiserforum), which was not completely completed. To the northeast is the Leopoldinian Tract of the Hofburg Palace, to the southeast is the new Hofburg, and to the southwest, the inner ring road separates it from Äußeres Burgtor. There are no buildings in the northwest, and you can have a good view of the inner ring road, the Capitol, the town hall, and the castle theater. There are two equestrian statues of military leaders on the square: Prince Eugen and Archduke Carl. François-Eugène, Prince of Savoy-Carignan, Italian: Principe Eugenio di Savoia, German: Prinz Eugen von Savoyen, October 18, 1663 -April 24, 1736), one of the great generals of the Habsburgs, Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire. He was tied with John Churchill of the United Kingdom and Marshal Villar of France as the most talented general in the early 18th century in Europe.
