A great example of the architecture that ultimately led to brutalism. A piece of anti fascist history as well. I've never seen a building quite like it.

I stumbled across this thing on my way to the Beethoven museum in Heiligenstadt and read that it was one of the longest building blocks... There is nothing special to see here, it's literally just a veeery long building block, no explanation not even of the name and hardly any architectural value in the whole thing, maybe just that people were fine living in something like it ...

An important architectural and historical landmark. Shallow sightseeing which is enough for most may take a very short time.

I pass very often nearby and I really do not understand what is historical in a building raised after WWII and having an ideologists' name. Not much to see, maybe only to grasp the size of the longest appartment building in Vienna.

(Translated by Google) The Karl-Marx-Hof stands on an area that until the 12th century was completely submerged by the waters of the Danube. Only in the eighteenth century the area was affected by major reclamation works by the will of Joseph II and gardens were installed. At the beginning of the 1920s the area was chosen by the Vienna City Council (at that time autonomously governed by the Social Democratic Party of Austria), to host the construction of a large public housing building. The Karl-Marx-Hof was built within the so-called period of red Vienna, between 1926 and 1930, on a project by the urban planner Karl Ehn, a pupil of Otto Wagner.

This historically significant public housing development is a representation of the social housing experiment in Vienna during the late 1920’s. It’s an imposing structure with a quiet charm. With an interest in history, and a little background reading, this is a worthwhile landmark and I’m glad I visited.

(Translated by Google) After the fall of the Autro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the Great War, a series of social democratic juntas followed one another in Vienna from 1919 to 1934. They gave way to a series of measures that led to identify the period as "red Vienna". In particular, a massive social housing plan developed, within which the Karl Marx Hof was the largest and most impressive complex. It was designed by the architect Karl Ehn (Vienna, 1884 - 1959) who from 1909 was employed in the administration of the city of Vienna, where in 1924 he became director of urban development. Built between 1926 and 1930, the Karl Marx Hof houses 1382 apartments, with an area of 30–60 m² each. It was decided to build only 18.5% of the area of 156,000 square meters, occupying the perimeter of the available lot, leaving the central space free and turning it into a large green area. Designed for a population of approximately 5,000 people, the complex included several collective facilities, including laundromats, a kindergarten, medical and dental offices, a library, a post office and commercial offices. Since 2012, an interesting museum dedicated to the "Red Vienna" has been created inside the “Waschsalon”. Well maintained and cared for, it can be easily reached from the center of Vienna by public transport.

(Translated by Google) The classic community building - spacious courtyard, one notices the former intention, the working class to offer a much better living. Of course, the claims are sometimes different today - but you do not feel that the people who live there are doing badly.

(Translated by Google) Karl Mark-Hof, one of the symbols of social architecture, was built between 1917 and 1930 and is 1.1 km long and has inhabited about 5,000 people. Socialists were built to symbolize the 'royal palace' for the middle class. The importance of Karl Mark-Hof is for the middle class, but architectural innovations, including the kitchen, have begun. Austria's first female architect, Margarete Schuette Lihotzky, created a kitchen system that we are generally using. At the time, the sanitation was poor due to tuberculosis, and the innovative design of dividing the house structure into corridors, toilets, rooms, and kitchens was called the Frankfurt Kitchen (Frankfurt's kitchen design). The innovation of the kitchen structure also solved the problem of hygiene, increased opportunities for women's social participation (labour), and increased opportunities for men to raise children. So, in front of the building, a memorial statue was put up which means enlightenment, physical culture, childcare, and liberty / freedom.

The building, even with great extension, seeks to break the homogeneity with varied architectural features and elements. The equality preached by ideology does not mean monotony. But symbolic resources are dated and highlight allegories of power and submission of the masses.
