Mogalarajpuram caves are right in the middle of the city of Vijaywada and are said to be excavated around 5th century CE. We could visit at least 4 groups of caves and it made me wonder how about 1500 years back they could chisel so wonderful caves and engrave sculptures out of solid rocks. It is said that initially these caves were done by the Buddhists and later on Hindus took over these and carved Gods and Goddesses. The idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka and Ardhnareswara were carved in these caves but now these have been taken to various museums. Going around these caves and looking at these ancient caves gives an idea of the times when these were made and used. Good place to visit if one loves history of people of the region.

This cave no.3 of Moghalrajapuram caves is identified by archeologists as the oldest cave temple of goddess Durga in Vijayawada. It is located few yards from the Siddardha arts & science college. Goddess in the form of 'Mahishasura mardini' can be seen on the posterior wall of garbha griha of this cave. Sculptures of Trinity (Brahama, Vishnu and Maheswara) can be seen in a niche before entering the cave.

(Visited in January 2021) - A series of small caves with lost carvings & engravings that are being hopelessly encroached upon and completely ignored by all, dated variously to Vishnukundin/Pallava times. There is no proper access and they are maintained in a horrible way. It pains to look at Ardhanadeeswara Carving, which was supposedly one of the first in South India, getting completely withered away. Nothing to see. Please ignore even if you are a hardcore history buff

A sincere request to the govt.as well as the mayor or municipality corp. Please take care of these ancient caves. I understand people in the town don't take much interest in these caves and a lot of houses, shops, and traffic have sprouted up near to these caves. However, these caves must be protected and its conservation must be regulated properly. I went to visit last month but was utterly disappointed as they were closed, no gaurds were appointed i suppose, and fews kids were jumping through the iron fences. All I could manage to see was through the gate. And the one which is near to the siddharth college was far from being recognizable. Kindly take appropriate measures to ensure the proper maintenance of these areas.

Like this place very much, it's one of the ancient heritage sites of the Telugu land. Spirituality is the main concern for the original of these caves. Vijayawada is also a place for ancient monuments of Caves that were spread in three places within its vicinity. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) under takes the spaces in its control. A case study is needed and a must be done on the caves and publish for the posterity of Telugu culture. The ASI metal information boards or plaques are mostly invited in this place for the sake of information to the general civic. It's a most restricted place and no photography is allowed inside the caves.

The Mogalrajapuram Caves are five rock-cut cave temple groups located in different parts of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Dedicated to Shiva, they were excavated during the Eastern Chalukya reign or the Vishnukundins reign. They are generally dated to about the 7th-century, after the Akkanna Madanna Caves. They are simple and small, yet the artwork and iconography is more sophisticated than Akkanna Madanna Caves.

These caves are said to be excavated in the 5th century A.D. They are reputed to be the first of their kind in South India. The idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka and Arthanareeswara are carved here, but none of the statues are available here.

The gate is kept locked. If you are planning to visit this place, expect to see it from outside the gate for a few minutes.
