Entrance fee is 4000 COP. Museum is about cultural history of Colombia. 2-3 hours is enough to visit the museum.

Interesting enough for a few hours! Nice staff, lack of any non Spanish signage or any other information though. The 4,000 peso or $1 entry fee is very cheap but so is everything in Bogota. Not the most interesting of exhibits but good enough for a two hour visit. Nice shop, toilets and cafe on site.

Great museum. If you don't have time to visit all the other amazing museums in Bogota, the National Museum is a good choice as it contains various themes from the Museum of Gold, Emerald Museum, Botero, Military Museum, etc. If purchasing your tickets day off, bring cash. The ticket booth does not accept cards.

Came to learn more about Colombian history and art. With 90% of the information written in Spanish, we didn't get the context to learn and enjoy it. The few translations were verbose and pretentious. I expected more from a national museum. The art exhibition and the presentation was excellent. I enjoyed seeing so many original artworks, especially Botero. In addition, the museum building itself has a fascinating history, which they easily could have elaborated on.

A very good museum that explains the history of Colombia and doesn't shy away from the more brutal times or paintings. Extremely affordable and even had an exhibit of the Santo and Kaliman comic books, which was quite interesting to see.

Interactive displays made it nice for children and adults. There were a few pieces of pottery you could touch to get a sense of form and material. We had limited time so we visited the National museum because they had some gold, some emeralds, and some Bolteros. A little bit of everything and more. Only $10 entry for travelers.

So, as a foreigner, the experience is a bit limiting because only a small portion of the signs are translated into English, and I couldn't find any audio guides or anything like that. But with Google Translate and a basic knowledge of Spanish, you can make the best of it. The museum covers Colombian history and heritage. There is nice art dispersed among the historical artifacts, and the third level has some nice art, including works by Botero. It currently costs about 10 USD for foreigners.

Beautiful building with incredible history itself (former prison), and a tremendous volume of artifacts. Unfortunately there's only about 10 percent of the signage and plaques in English, and the entire museum lacks narrative - the rooms are just full of things from wildly different era's with no attempt at an educational narrative tract. Still worth the visit, very affordable entry price.

(Translated by Google) Simply worth seeing 😳 if you visit Colombia or rather Bogotá you should definitely go there 😍 For 3 people (including 1 student) we don't even add up the equivalent of 2 € and spent a good 2 hours in the museum. The former prison has been converted into a beautiful museum here. You can still see the past of this building on the walls and on various bars inside. As soon as you enter, you will receive a friendly greeting and a 5-minute introduction with an explanation of the individual areas. From then on you get the history and culture of this country mixed on 3 levels 😍 best just experience it yourself 😏 don't want to spoil too much and you have to experience it yourself anyway (Original) Einfach sehenswert 😳 wenn man Kolumbien oder besser gesagt Bogotá besucht sollte man dort unbedingt hingehen 😍 Wir zählen für 3 Personen (davon 1 Student) umgerechnet nicht mal 2€ zusammen und verbrachten gute 2 Stunden in dem Museum.

Great place to learn about the country's past and present. Weekend is more crowded but line up goes by quickly. The visit took me about 2hrs if you skim thru and just focus on few things of your interest.

Beautiful museum. Takes a lot of time to see everything (3 floors), so be ready to be there for hours. Open your eyes very well because every inch is full of history. Definitely, I'll be back. A good thing is that in the backyard there's a coffee place, so you can take a break and continue. Wednesdays from 3-5pm is free.

Worth visiting. A large museum housed on a former prison cell. Has an excellent collection. Very informative. Gives you an insight to the rich culture and history of Colombia. The exhibits are very straight forward. Has bits of everything. An hour or two is not enough to explore the exhibits. The ticket is a bit expensive for tourists but is worth the experience. Has a souvenir shop and a coffeeshop at the exit.

This museum was free. I'm not sure if this is always free or if it was that I arrived 45 minutes before closing. It was interesting to see architecture both outside and in. It was originally a prison.

We had the privilege of visiting the Museo Nacional de Colombia earlier today, and what a gorgeous museum it was! The building the museum is housed in is historical, and the exhibits are well laid out with plenty of interesting information. While not all the descriptions are available in English, many were bilingual. Make sure to give yourself ample time, as the museum is three floors. With regular entry fees hovering around $1.00USD, it's a great - and budget-friendly - way to spend an afternoon (and a refuge from the hustle and bustle of downtown Bogota).

Nice museum, which is mainly focused for art exhibitions and history of Colombia. To see everything will take you around 2 hours cause they don't have open all the rooms. Entrance is cheap and building has very interesting history. Recommended to go there!

If you’re not very knowledgeable about history or a history student/professor then it might be a little overwhelming for the average person. Especially if you know next to nothing about Colombian history. It’s a great museum and there are many beautiful artifacts here and exhibits to explore.

I came on Wednesday and I'm relieve I didn't pay. The Museum is free every Wednesday from 3-5pm and every last Sunday of each month. If you are not a Colombian citizen you have to pay in US Dollars a different price and cash, saying this if you need to use the restrooms there's not toilet paper, you have to BUY it, I mean, how come one of the MUST visit places in Bogota, which explain about it's History and Culture has not toilet paper for their customer? ... Setting this aside the Museum didn't fulfill my expectations; the structure of the Museum is beautiful and has a very interesting history but the expositions weren't that organized. I got overwhelmed.

(Translated by Google) Founded by law of the first Congress of the Republic on July 28, 1823, the National Museum of Colombia is the oldest of the country's museums and one of the oldest in America. For almost two centuries, it has been devoted to the conservation and dissemination of representative testimonies of the cultural values of the Nation. It opened its doors to the public on July 4, 1824, the date that the vice president, General Francisco de Paula Santander officially declared it created. The National Museum was initially installed in the Botanical House, which housed the natural history collection put together by José Celestino Mutis and cared for by his disciples; over time these pieces were joined by others of an archaeological, historical and artistic nature. Its heritage is divided into four collections: art, history, archeology and ethnography. His collection of Colombian, Latin American and European art includes paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, installations and decorative arts from the colonial period to the present day. His property was originally the panoptico penitentiary, its architect being the Danish Thomas Reed, a construction that was ordered by Eustorgio Salgar during his mandate as President of the United States of Colombia. In front of the museum is the TransMilenio underground station that bears the same name "National Museum". The National Museum of Colombia was born on the initiative of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander, at a time when several battles were being fought to achieve independence. Throughout its history, the National Museum of Colombia has occupied various venues. From its foundation until 1842, it occupied the old Botanical House - now disappeared; from 1845 to 1913, the building of the Classrooms -Museum of Colonial Art of Bogotá-; from 1913 to 1922, the Rufino Cuervo Passage - now disappeared; from 1922 to 1944, the Pedro A. López building - today the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development -; and from 1948 to date, the facilities of the old Cundinamarca Central Penitentiary, known as "Panóptico". The aforementioned penitentiary, designed by Thomas Reed in the 1850s and built from October 1, 1874, was the largest prison in the country for almost 72 years. However, in 1946 the inmates were transferred to the new La Picota prison and the Government assigned the building to house the National Museum. The Panopticon, after being restored and adapted under the direction of the architects Manuel de Vengoechea and Hernando Vargas Rubiano, was inaugurated as the headquarters of the National Museum of Colombia on May 2, 1948. Since the building meets architectural values, the government declared a National Monument on August 11, 1975. Between 1989 and 2001, the Comprehensive Restoration Project for the Building was carried out, which culminated in the first half of 2001 and was officially inaugurated on July 28, with the opening of all the Museum's exhibition rooms. Currently, the Special Administrative Units, National Museum of Colombia and Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (Icanh), both dependent on the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, are in charge of the administration, conservation and dissemination of the collections that make up the Museum.

Great museum with, both historic and artistic contributions. The building, itself, has a unique coexistence to the experience as it was a former prison. Must visit!

Loved it. Very great for Colombians, and educational for intelligent tourists. It's a bit esoteric, so be ready to be bored if you don't like history.

The exhibits have a stronger emphasis on the contemporary history of colombia and the lifestyles of Spanish settlers. On the top floor, there are oil paintings by various Colombian artists.

Nice week-end activity. On Sundays entrance is free. Nearby Ibis hotel has a public parking. Next to the museum calle 30 is very colorful and full of eating options.

Well worth visiting. A great collection of Columbian archeology, culture, and art. Takes from 2 to 4 hours. No English tours. Limited English audio and plaques.

The National Museum is deserving of its name given that it’s exhibits focus almost entirely on the history and art of Colombia 🇨🇴, and given the diversity of material on display. For me, it is a handsome venue which I enjoyed waking through, and an interesting re-purposing of a prison. However, I feel that it is a museum that tries to do too much, leaving the visitor overwhelmed with somewhat of a collage of both meaningful artifacts and less important ephemera beginning with prehistoric antiquities and continuing to the present day. For serious students of Colombia history, however, it contains a lot of material thought and research. Well worth visiting but perhaps best appreciated after a course in Colombian history. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed my visit.

  • 5/5 Evelyn L. 1 year ago on Google
It's been one of the best museums I've visited ever. Free entrance on Sundays, interactive exposition. It's mostly about Colombia, but it tells about history, lately conflicts, geography, and botanic. I was there the entire afternoon and I needed to rush to finish.

Huge museum set in an old prison. The staggering number of artefacts are tastefully presented in an easy to navigate layout. Of special note are countless ancient gold and emerald treasures, along with Colonial pieces, and Simon Bolivar's personal regalia. Very much worth the meagre cost of administration. Expect to spend 1-2 hours at a modest pace.

Great museum in a converted prison with lots of exhibits on Colombian history, art, and culture with lots of gold artifacts and Boteto works. It may be a little bit more challenging to understand everything if you don't speak Spanish as many of the exhibits aren't signed in English.

  • 3/5 Alper E. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting to see, but not very appealing if you can't read in Spanish. Very few bi-lingual texts. The building of the museum itself worth seeing.

  • 5/5 Travelling Z. 1 year ago on Google
Sso worth it! It's got prehispanic and colonial history. There are many different interactive activities for all ages. The patio is gorgeous. The audio links are not good so don't rely on that and all explanations are written in Spanish. Wednesdays is free admission whether you're a local or foreigner and regularly the price is 3,000 Colombian pesos (0.62USD) not even a dollar!! Once you manage to get here, connect to wifi for free inside the museum. There is a wheelchair accessible entrance and there is an elevator as well (not sure if it works though). You can go to many places starting here. If you're a history buff... 2 hours will do fine.

It’s certainly a good place to visit as a local as it holds and unlocks a lot of political and religious history of Colombia. I understand that what is now the museum building was historically a prison. There’s a lot to see certainly and there’s a tour guide. If you’re a tourist and don’t speak Spanish like me, then the guide’s narration might not be helpful except if you have your own translator as an additional guide. The museum could generally be better organized and put together.

  • 5/5 Gabo R. 1 year ago on Google
Unfortunately I was not able to see all the 3 floors, just the first one. They have an special exhibition about hip hop and how affected the Colombian culture. Will be open until April. You would need the hole day to visit it all.

Famous museum in Bogota. Tickets are quite expensive for foreigners. Room with paintings is spectacular.

  • 4/5 Barnaby K. 1 year ago on Google
There is a lot to see and some interesting displays. I loved the old strong boxes and Pieces of Eight. I imagined them carrying gold and emeralds back to Europe. There is not much written in English, and what is written is complete gobbledegook; utter pap that brings no nourishment to the mind!

  • 3/5 Kačka F. 6 months ago on Google
I know 41,000 pesos is not too crazy for a museum entrance, but if you are charging foreigners (that include non-Spanish speakers) seven-fold of what you are charging Colombian nationals, you should have more English texts, for sure. I still learned a lot, though, and the building was very nice!

Very nice museum, with some interesting work from different artists and lots on Colombian heritage. It is also a beautiful historical building.

Admission is about $10 USD for foreigners and $1 for locals. The building has an elevator and wheelchair ramps. However, the elevator was not functional on my most recent visit. I would guess it is simply turned off and not broken. There is a large picture showing male frontal nudity on the 2nd floor. There are also paintings with nudity. Some paintings depict violence, murder, and death. The 2nd floor has a gay pride section. The 3rd floor is my favorite. It has many beautiful paintings.
