Wonderful, comprehensive museum of typical Lithuanian life in times gone by. Great care was taken to depict everyday life in times gone by and show the care and decoration of the everyday objects in the unique Lithuanian handcraft style. A must on your places to visit in Vilinus!

I had much higher expectations from this one, the only thing I remember after just a few days since I visited is the reconstruction of the Grunwald Battle. Most of the curation was done decades ago and not much has been done in terms of updating the info although there are enough descriptions in English for the history buffs

It was just a quick visit up the funicular railway to the tower to look down on most of Vilnius. Just €1 to take the railway but then €4 to go up the tower. Great view and probably lots of interesting things in the museum, just didn't have the time. Very worth a visit even if just for the view.

Love this museum. Nice collection. It’s not so big but got plenty of stuff. Tickets about €3 for adult and kids free. They have got musical instruments, maps of old Lithuania, clothes used to wear and different areas of Lithuania and much more. Must visit if you like history.

Quite nice museum, 4 euros entrance fee. To be fair I wanted to see the sarcophagus which was not there when I visited. For this kind of museum maybe I expected more miniature reproduction, more visitor-friendly rather than simply showing the different items.

I really enjoyed this museum. Don't miss the kiosk on the 2nd floor with the mini videos on .....the cultures of Vilnius, Napolean's 19 days, the 1863 uprising etc. English captions. Most exhibits had English text available. Some interesting items from burial grounds. Traditional regional Lithuanian dress exhibit was interesting, as was the exhibit on Lithuanian attitude towards crosses.

It'ts obligatory to visit this museum if you want to find out about the history of the county. But to get the whole and complete picture you should also visit other museums ( Bastion, Old Arsenal, Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, Gediminas' Tower, etc.) The National Museum is small, it has only two floors. Some of the items are highly interesting, others are not. The admission fee is 2 euros.

The museum presents the diverse history of the Lithuanian region starting from the late Neolithic period (around 10,000 BC). The museum has a very impressive collection of traditional Lithuanian wooden crosses, the craft of which is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Christianity also came with the cross as a symbol, which for centuries Lithuanian peasants have carved on important places in village communities or, for example, on the sides of roads to protect passers-by. The museum also has interesting traditional rooms of Lithuanian rural dwellings. The joint history of Lithuania and Sweden can also be seen in the museum. The Swedish prince John III went to get a wealthy wife, the Polish princess Katariina Jagiellonica, from Vilnius in 1562. The couple lived in the Turku castle before John became king of Sweden after he deposed his brother Erik XIV. John and Katarina's son Sigismund I (in Polish-Lithuanian Sigismund III) was for a while the king of both Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian personal union, until John's brother Charles IX deposed him from the Swedish throne. However, Sigismund III and through him the Vaasa family continued to rule Poland-Lithuania. The museum operates in an old arsenal, which is in need of renovation in many places.

I paid 5e to see a museum that is in total removal, with big empty rooms, stickers marks on walls and stains on the carpet. The few things I saw was all about the 19th century with soviet paintings. While the history of this country is very different from its Baltic neighbours, this museum has recently decided it would be more profitable to exploit the way too much exploited modern history It's a shame to completely erase from this museum the whole history of this country and it's a shame to make people pay 5e for a dirty and empty museum that you can visit in 15 min

(Translated by Google) A wonderful diverse collection of curiosities and monuments of the 12th-20th centuries (I will write about it below), but a shocking discovery about Lithuania's attitude to Ukraine for all those who studied history at school after the 1990s. It makes you sober and instructive to see how reciprocal the love of Hrushevsky and other historians for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) was, how much they overestimated his supposedly relatively positive role in the history of Ukraine. I spent 4 hours in the museum and saw only three mentions of Ukraine (or Belarus, with which Lithuania has always had a much closer connection, but being from Ukraine, I pay attention to us of course). One of these mentions is a portrait of a Uniate figure. In general, the impression that the fact that the Ukrainian and Belarusian lands became part of the GDL, the Lithuanians themselves are trying to hide and erase, everywhere it is about their great love and close relations with Poland. The Union of Lublin and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for Lithuanians is the most wonderful event and prosperity of Lithuanian statehood (while for Ukraine it is clear that this is the beginning of long violent Polonization and planting of Catholicism by Poland, which later threw Khmelnytsky into a bear). and the Christian faith from the Polish Jesuits (numerous portraits of them) and Catholicism. It is very hastily mentioned that the pagan Lithuanians did not have their own script, so they borrowed it from the conquered tribes of Kievan Rus, that for a long time they had a clerical language of official papers, based on this borrowing. , the medieval language of business papers "Chancellery Slavonic" was hastily mentioned in the magistrate's records at a temporary exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery of Lithuania, not in this museum). In the exposition of the Battle of Grunwald, after a list of cities of modern Belarus and Ukraine that fought under Vytautas, all soldiers from these cities are called in English "Russians" - not some historical term like Ruthenians, Rus, but simply actually referred to "friendly" Lithuanians ancestors of modern inhabitants. Belarus and Ukraine to modern Russia. And this is a state historical museum, no words! (Another update: on the official tourist website of Vilnius, where we are talking about the ethnically diverse population of the Middle Ages, English lists both Tatars and the same Russians, but no Belarusians and Ukrainians. Such (((( In all other respects, the museum's collection is incredibly diverse and interesting (given that Russia twice removed valuable exhibits from the museum as punishment for anti-Russian sentiment, so some exported items are lithographs): ancient maps of 16th century Europe, numerous portraits of aristocrats, kings, princes , Jesuits, Catholic figures, anti-Russian insurgents of the 19th century (including photo portraits!). The uprising of the 19th century was brutally suppressed, after which the inhabitants of the city had to obtain a police permit to walk around the city with a stick (which is not a weapon hidden there) and mourning (which is not for the rebels). A large and interesting collection of artifacts associated with this uprising, which took place simultaneously with the Polish and the Poles helped, including military specialists. You will also learn about the qualification and educational requirements for the profession of "executioner" in the Middle Ages and where you could get such an education (audio guide), the superstitions of medieval executioners; the hook with which the bodies of those who died of the plague were dragged; a wooden violin made by hand by a 19th-century anti-Russian insurgent exiled to Russia; a piece of transatlantic telegraph cable of the 19th or early 20th century; incredibly beautiful carved crosses and sculptures (many of them, a whole room); folk wooden toys and the interior of various rooms of a typical hut of the Lithuanian peasant economy; traditional clothing (probably during one of the divisions of the Commonwealth Prussia seized some land inhabited by Lithuanians, one of the costumes hints at this). Many other attractions, a ticket to the museum costs only 3 euros, audio guide -1 euro (informative last 4-5-6 points out of 10, depending on the hall, could tell more, because there is something to tell!). In general, for lovers of history and art - a must !!!!!

Interesting museum, which you can speed through. There isn’t a huge amount of material to explore and some of it is tenuous. A result of the USSR (good ol’ Soviets) occupation and destruction of local cultural identity. It’s quite cheap to enter, the staff are very welcoming and there is enough to see to make it worthwhile.

An incredibly detailed "replica" palace. While there isn't that many actual artifact objects, the information presented on the history, and heritage, of Vilnius's origin, and rise/fall of power, is detailed and of high quality.. Yet perhaps the more important message is in the medium... Maybe it's the fact of Lithuania having invested so much into this project (16 years construction, costing ~€100 million), having taken so much care in trying to reproduce this period replica, that's the real story, of a nation painfully trying to regain and rebuilt a history that was purposefully and methodically dismantled in its recent past.

A trip to the history of Lithuania) It is the main and biggest history museum in the country. You need several hours to explore the exhibitions because there are many interesting exhibits, installations and paintings. There is a large collection of portraits. Some exhibitions look too simple and boring, especially when you're exploring the halls devoted to the old times and traditional Lithuanian culture. I would like to see more interaction here. However, the main thing is that there's a nice collection of national costumes and everyday items of the 20th century, including WW2. The museum has good prices and inadequate opening hours. It would be better to close the museum in the late evening. But still, it is worth a visit.

Good museum about Lithuanian recent history. There is also a very interesting temporary exhibition to unbox the collection of Henry Gaidis donated to the museum, and a large number of coins and bank notes used in Lithuania before the Euro. Wifi/Shop/Coffee.

I think this museum has the best value for money in Vilnius if you are thinking in terms of artifacts. There's a broad range of artifacts here that tell a story of the history of Lithuania up until the early 1900s which is particularly interesting. It was only £5 per adult to enter and I believe it's free with the Vilnius card.

In this place stood a Gothic brick building, the outer wall of which was also the defensive wall of the castle. 1545 In Franco Hogenberg's plan for Vilnius, we see a long, one-story brick building on the eastern end, complete with a tall tower - a "lighthouse", which was supposed to light the barges floating on the Neris. The purpose of the building itself is not specified. In the later one - 1737. The Fiurstenhof plan at this location depicts a building interconnected by a transverse building with two other buildings standing in parallel. All this complex ensemble comprised the servants' houses and outbuildings of the Grand Duke's estate. It is believed that this building from 1648 to 1794. was located the Castle jurisdiction court and administration. 18th century In the second half of the 18th century, the building was reconstructed into barracks and named the New Arsenal by the decree of Mykolas Kazimieras Oginskis, the great Hetman of the GDL. After the reconstruction, the changed appearance of the building has survived to the present day. 19th century At the beginning of the 19th century, a massive column portico was introduced in the center of the facade. 1960-1965 the building was substantially renovated in 1968. adapted to the expositions of the Lithuanian National Museum. The National Museum of Lithuania, which today preserves more than one million exhibits, has its predecessors - 1855. May 11 founded the Antiquities Museum and in 1952. heir of the collections of the formed Museum of History - Ethnography and their successor. 1990 In 1992, after the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania, the Museum of History and Ethnography as the custodian of the main collections of Lithuanian archeology, history and ethnic culture. named after the Lithuanian National Museum. The new arsenal (Arsenalo St. 1) - one of the oldest buildings of the Vilnius castle complex - features an exposition of the history of Ancient Lithuania, reflecting the changing times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since the formation of the state in the 13th century. until the loss of statehood in 1795. 19th century Lithuanian History Exposition - Lithuania in Tsarist Government Exposition of Ethnic Culture - 18th c. - 20th century Life of Lithuanian peasants in the first half, folk art, cross-crafting. The museum is organized in specialized sections of Lithuanian collections: Archeology, Medieval and Modern Archeology, Ethnic Culture, History, Modern History, Iconography and Numismatics. Specialized conferences, cultural history evenings and educational programs are held. (Original) Naujasis arsenalas – vienas seniausių Vilniaus pilių komplekso statinių. Archeologiniai tyrinėjimai liudija, kad XIV a. šioje vietoje stovėjo gotikinis mūrinis pastatas, kurio išorinė siena buvo kartu ir pilies gynybinė siena. 1545 m. Franco Hogenbergo Vilniaus plane dabartinio pastato vietoje matome ilgą vieno aukšto mūrinį pastatą, rytiniame gale užbaigtą aukštu bokštu – „švyturiu“, turėjusiu šviesti Nerimi plaukiančioms baržoms. Paties pastato paskirtis nenurodyta. XIX a. pradžioje fasado centre pristatytas masyvių kolonų portikas. 1960–1965 m. pastatas iš esmės suremontuotas, 1968 m. pritaikytas Lietuvos nacionalinio muziejaus ekspozicijoms. Lietuvos nacionalinis muziejus, šiandien saugantis daugiau nei milijoną eksponatų, yra savo pirmtakų – 1855 m. gegužės 11 d. įkurto Senienų muziejaus ir 1952 m. suformuoto Istorijos – etnografijos muziejaus rinkinių paveldėtojas bei jų veiklos tęsėjas. 1990 m. atkūrus nepriklausomą Lietuvos valstybę, Istorijos ir etnografijos muziejus kaip pagrindinių Lietuvos archeologijos, istorijos ir etninės kultūros kolekcijų saugotojas 1992 m. pavadintas Lietuvos nacionaliniu muziejumi. Naujajame arsenale (Arsenalo g. 1) – viename seniausių Vilniaus pilių komplekso statinių, įrengta Senosios Lietuvos istorijos ekspozicija atspindinti permainingus Lietuvos Didžiosios kunigaikštystės klestėjimo ir nuosmukio laikus nuo valstybės susidarymo XIII a. iki valstybingumo praradimo 1795 m. XIX a. Lietuvos istorijos ekspozicija – „Lietuva carų valdžioje“ Etninės kultūros ekspozicija – XVIII a. – XX a. I pusės Lietuvos valstiečių buitis, liaudies menas, kryždirbystė. Muziejaus darbas organizuojamas specializuotuose lituanistinių rinkinių skyriuose: Archeologijos, Viduramžių ir Naujųjų laikų archeologijos, Etninės kultūros, Istorijos, Naujausių laikų istorijos, Ikonografijos ir Numizmatikos. Rengiamos specializuotos konferencijos, kultūros istorijos vakarai, edukacinės programos.

(Translated by Google) The museum is large, interesting, it tells a lot about the history of Poland and Lithuania. There are old coins, mock-ups and lots of other interesting stuff. The place will also be interesting for children aged 7+ who know a bit about the Battle of Grunwald and Władysław Jagiełło. I recommend it to small and large. Z.S😉 (Original) Muzeum jest duże, ciekawe, opowiada dużo o historii Polski i Litwy. Są stare monety, makiety i mnóstwo innych ciekawych rzeczy. (Original) Šis muziejus jau prieš 10 metų buvo morališkai pasenęs. Venkite ir užsieniečiams draugams nerodykite. Geriau į valdovų rūmus nueiti..

(Translated by Google) There are many artifacts in the museum that tell about the history of Lithuania. The Lithuanian national costume is well represented. You will find out what clothes were worn by young girls, and what kind of married women, how the clothes of those living on the Baltic coast differ from those who lived in Eastern Lithuania. A nice museum, a little bit with exhibitions a little too outdated. Employees do not know English, and sometimes they are screaming if you fit too hard on thick glass windows.
