Wow. I have never been to a museum that provides such a detailed, rich and comprehensive reproduction of the history of its city/country. We love history, and we LOVED this museum. It was fantastic. The museum has 4 different routes. Route 1 is by far the longest, and provides a history of the foundation of Vilnius/Lithuania and how it's intertwined with neighbouring countries. It also shows a reconstruction of the architecture of the palace and building around it. This route can take between 2-3 hours, depending on how much you read. The other three routes are a lot shorter: Route 2 shows reconstructions of historical rooms within the palace, Route 3 shows what everyday life was like in the palace and Route 4 shows temporary exhibitions. Which route to take is personal preference. You can do all 4 in an afternoon, but if you're interested in the history of Lithuania then Route 1 is more than enough. It is possible to get separate tickets for the individual routes. We went as a couple, but we saw families with kids as well.

This is maybe one of the largest museums and attractions in Lithuania. There are 4 routes to enjoy, each with different specific exhibits and attractions. The ticket is not expensive compared to other museums which offer much less. We took full tour, enjoyed most the first and third routes of the tour. Needs 2 hours.

The museum was exciting to visit and to know about the Lithuanian history and culture. They offer free entrance for Ukrainians. Thank you so much!!!

Cannot possibly fathom how this place could have a 4.7-star avg out of nearly 6k ratings. It's one of the stalest, least inspired and most outdated museum exhibitions I've ever had the misfortune to visit and very much skippable for every foreign visitor. The given history of Lithuania and total demolition of the palace was tragic, but the curation team's decision to address this fact only through documentation of the excavation/construction itself, and proceeding to pretend it's kind of real for the remaining 90% of floor space is badly misguided. The second equally grave sin is the 30-40 years outdated presentation style of "let's chuck piles of old stuff into vitrines and install about 200 2-meter tall information plaques". It feels like no members of the design team had ever stepped foot in any museum since their high school years, which must have been in the '70s at the latest. It's a real shame to see a major (and surely generously EU-funded) opportunity go to waste like this when the Museum of Occupations shows with no sweat how 21st-century museum practice is really done.

3 different tours to choose from although cheaper to buy all 3. Vilnius history in tour one with archaeology finds of the older Palace that one stood and fascinating textile articles uncovered such as leather boots and purses still in good condition considering their age. Some amazing heating stoves with pretty ceramic tiles.

Fantastic building. One of a series next to the cathedral and the bell tower in the great square of Vilnius. Quite spectacular! Went into the museum the following day. World class set up, highly organised and laid out. It’s very modern and it’s the first time I have had to scan my ticket to go into the toilet anywhere in the world! €9.50 entry for the full tour (there are four tour routes). Allow at least a complete morning or afternoon for your visit. Very very impressive displays and signage in English.

Came here and paid a relatively small ticket price for the amount of museum and exhibits that this place holds. We spent 2 hrs here and still only saw half of it. The audio guide is done well and the exhibits and information are presented in a great way. English language is included on the displays. Definitely recommend for those that enjoy history and a great panoramic view of the city.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is a renaissance style palace in Vilnius. It was originally constructed in the 15th century for the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the future Kings of Poland (the future state of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). Nowadays, it’s one of the best museums in the country, where you can learn all about the development of Lithuania as a nation an the country, marvel at the most interesting objects that tell Lithuania’s story. Highly recommend visiting it on any day, but especially a rainy one! You won’t regret, no matter if you’re Lithuanian or a curious foreigner.

The re-created second floor is awesome. It is so sad that everything had to be redone after centuries of destruction by the Russians, but the rooms are very impressive and demonstrate the splendor that once was.

The palace of the Grand Dukes is a very beautiful reconstructed palace. Highly recommended to spend the whole afternoon (at least 4 hours) to enjoy the exhibition. Please do rent the 1€ audio guide, they explain the architecture, history, how people live in the past and even some related background stories, totally worth every penny! The employees were all friendly. It was an very awesome experience.

It was a really great experience to learn not only about Lithuania’s history but also European history! A must visit location when visiting Vilnius! My recommendation is to get the audio guide as the amount of stuff to read is high and it does help having it.

Part of the fairly large Cathedral Square “complex”. It’s an interesting building, with loads of people milling about (saw lots of kids skateboarding, as it was a clear & sunny day). Like many of the “historical” places in Vilnius, it looks like it’s fairly recently (& heavily) remodeled/ renovated, so it’s more representative than authentic, fair warning. Still impressive & cool to visit/ photograph. Especially as night falls…

Amazing archeology from the 13th century. Well presented history of the royalty of Lithuania with lots to read and take in. A decent collection of weaponry and reconstructed rooms of the old Palace. 11€ gets you a ticket for all of the exhibits and an audio guide. I spent 4 hours here.

This museum is great value for money. For €10.50 (adult) you get access to 3 different tour routes (exhibitions) all of which have their own merit. This museum gives great insight into the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian and it's rulers and how the politics was played out within the wider Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and one particular lady guided us to the observation tower, something we could have very easily overlooked.

This is a great museum where you can travel back in time to the era when the city of Vilnius was established. The building was rebuilt from the ground, and it contains treasures of architecture, art and craftsmanship. You should take audio guide and try 3D virtual reality session too. The place is interesting even for small children - there is places where they can sit and draw, also there is interactive consoles where you can play puzzle games with pictures from historical moments. The staff is very polite and helpful. If you have baby stroller they offer lifts and guide you to the easiest paths. All in all, its the place worth visiting.

Great museum. The entire history of Lithuania is explained in one of the 4 exhibitions. Doing all 4 exhibitions is a bit to much for one go. The foundations of the old palace are still visible.

Must see in Vilnius, the Museum has a very detailed history of Lithuania from prehistoric times to today, restored historical halls of the Vilnius princes' castle, a lot of art from that period, and finally an observation tower with a nice view of the city

Excellent experience visiting the Palace. Lithuania has a fascinating history that needs to be shared and known. The Palace or the Grand Dukes is at the center of this cultural heritage and a must see when coming through Vilnius. I definitely recommend the guided visit with Laura (in English). She was very patient and answered all our questions. Many thanks!

Quite informative, the people are very friendly and helpful. And some of the exhibits are quite impressive. What I liked the most was some parts where big posters where giving extra context about history and many times even further analysis and pictures.

The history here is absolutely wonderful and extensive. We hired an English speaking tour guide and she was one of the curators of the exhibits and gave us such a wonderful explanation of the different exhibits. Lots of information that wasn't on the placards as well as some fun trivia about Vilnius and Lithuanian history. Very wheelchair friendly as well.

Huge attraction. The expeditions 1 and 2 are bigger and more interesting that that expeditions 3-4 and you need much more time to see them (we recommend to get the audio guide for 1 euro as the sound is very clean). You can pass through expeditions 3 and 4 faster if you are already exhausted from the first two. Have in mind that you can get a ticket for specific expeditions if you don't want to pay for all of them.

It‘s quite big. The palace is divided in 4 sections. You can buy a ticket separately for each section or a combined ticket for all 4. The exhibitions are very informative. They have very long texts and most visitors won‘t bother reading them all.

Breathtaking beauty, interesting exhibits, interesting (no joke) and nice staff. Divided into 3 parts - interior and architecture, ruins, everyday life and weapons. to go to all expositions, about 10€ per person. We were lucky to see the tapestry exhibition - we will never forget it. definitely recommend, this will not be the classic boring museum!

  • 4/5 Kim S. 8 months ago on Google
The museum is very enjoyable. The first tour is definitely the most interesting, especially if you get yourself an audioguide. I didn't know that the palace has only been build recently (on top of the scarce remains of the original castle), so the rooms that you see during the second tour are not all that interesting, since they're not historical really. The weapon exposition (tour 3) is short, albeit nice. I wish the staff was nicer though - were staring VERY hard. All in all I recommend visiting the palace, if you're short on time, tour 1 is by far the most interesting.

Interesting to learn all about the history of Lithuania and the grand dukes. And for a Swede to see the Lithuanian perspective of some of Sweden's historic greatness. Very big museum, though and text heavy. A bit much if you're not really dedicated.

Big museum with a lot of history and things to see, and free entrance on Sundays. I like that you can walk through the archaeological excavations and the palace itself. Wish that there was some more interactive or visual information though, it's a lot of text.

We spent 3.5 hours here! This museum is excellent and a really helpful orientation on the history of Lithuania between the 1250’s and the 1800’s. It does involve plenty of reading, but it’s worth every word.

Here we're talking about a museum of World class! I had to go back the next day because of all the information on Lithuanian history. Definitely worth a visit or two for history buffs. The whole palace is built from scratch since the old was destroyed a long time ago, but the replica building is a marvelous sight, they have furnished the rooms with furniture and stuff so we can see how it could have been. The cellar is filled with ruins old old structures. The excavation of the site is very well documented.

(Translated by Google) I visited this wonderful museum. The first thing I want to say is that the quarantine is now, and there were almost no people, so the atmosphere was indescribable. Now about the museum itself. Here you can fully learn about all the rulers in the smallest detail. About the palace itself: how it was built and how it improved over time. There are also a lot of exhibits and everything that you can look at with pleasure. Tickets are relatively inexpensive - 6 euros for an adult and 3 for a student. If you only understand Russian, there is an audio guide that will be with you all the way. In general, if you like museums and the history of Lithuania is interesting, then I highly recommend it.

Interesting Museum that tells the story of the Lithuanian rulers and their Vilnius castle. Museum has 4 tours, we went on 1 and 2 that show the rulers private rooms and the archaeology/history of the castle. Tours are very reasonably priced and the exhibition descriptions are also in English. There is a AR glasses exhibit on tour 1 that shows the history of the castle, costs €1 but well worth it. Good place to go on a rainy day.

The museum provides 4 tours, including the history of Lithuania from 1009AD to now, the environment in which Grand Duke lived, the armour and weaponry of medieval era as well as a special exhibition demonstrating the appearance of the deserted churches in Ukraine, Beralus and Lithuania. Because of the abundance of the history, one can easily spend the whole day or two here if he or she wants to read everything. Very impressive. Also from the observation tower in your two, you can see the Geronimo tower and the city. Perhaps way to spend the day if you are interested in history and architecture.

Very nice museum. I'd recommend visiting it in 2 days. It has a very detailed history section (the first one), which is very interesting, but long. It took us nearly 5 hours with just the 2 first sections, and we didn't have any energy left for the 2 last ones. The view from the tower is very nice, and you can really see all the churches in Vilnius. The placement of the paintings and their order is nicely chosen, and it makes for a nice afternoon
