The Gates of Dawn was built between 1503 and 1522 as part of Vilnius' defensive fortifications. The classical style gate continues to stand at the entrance to the Old Town, guarding the precious painting of the Virgin Mary.

A wonderful and remarkable symbol of Vilnius) Must visit 💯 The Gates of Dawn were first mentioned in 1514 and have since become one of the most important place in Vilnius. Various tours start here. When you enter the chapel, you feel an amazing atmosphere of tranquility, and see the miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy. It is also called the Madonna of the Gates of Dawn or the Madonna of Vilnius. This painting was painted specifically for this chapel in the 17th century. It is known worldwide as one of the most famous Renaissance paintings in Lithuania. The painting is worshiped and regarded as magical by Catholics, Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox.

A second-level church which has an archway underneath that you can walk through. At night, the arch is covered in lights, and felt quite safe. The church was lovely, and serene. There were signs saying “no photographs” hence this post not featuring any indoor pictures of the church itself.

One of the most popular attractions in Vilnius, and you can see it in the number of visitors. We didn't go inside to see. I recommend visiting early in the morning, when you can photograph the area in peace!:) However, the gate is great and worth visiting, and it's easy on the way from e.g. the train station to the old town.

Sacred place in Vilnius, the entrance to the old city. People say, if you stay under this gate and pray, your dreams will come true.

Beautiful and inspiring. Great bustle and atmosphere when the sun's out, the Angles truly were looking down. Agreed this is a great place to start your walk up to three crosses.

Truly a breathtaking sight to behold. It feels like a magical place. The fact it's the only remaining one of the gates to the old city is awestriking. You could feel the energy it radiates. You can not miss this sight when you visit Vilnius. Pictures can not transmit the true energy of this spiritual gate.

Me and my wife went to great city Vilnius in the middle of this month and saw this magnificent, mega-historical old place. It was so cool to learn about its history and how many churches were around it and how many people loved it. The Gate of Dawn (Lithuanian: Aušros vartai) is a UNESCO heritage spot. It was built between 1503 and 1522 to protect the city from bad guys. It has a painting of Mary that is very special and people say it can do miracles. The painting was made around 1630 and crowned by the Pope in 1927. The gate is the only one left from the old city wall that was destroyed by the Russians in 1799. In 1702, the gate was attacked by the Swedish army, but, according to the legend, St. Mary helped the defenders to win. We liked it a lot and I recommend you to see it too.

Church is stunning.how ever Who shift was last night to close church gates at the back(particular man) was not nice to all my family I took my kids and husband to show this beautiful church and I'm ashamed of church workers behaviour as hi was keep calling my husband "Ur buddy" even when I said it's my husband and my kids, and we all Catholics his said I'm not sure u can take Ur buddy and if his Catholic and Ur kids too u can have a very quick look, and his added if u would be a Catholic Ur friend should take off his hat,we were in a hallway not in the church yet,it's 30+C outside we hat hads on, I would never argue in the church is not what Catholism about, while we walk forward man was getting angrier and mumbling that i don't see u as a Catholic. Giving second look to my 10months old and my 7year daughter and said are you sure you Catholics... And you all christened too ?for sure is it?I said yes it's my family Alright so then take your pal then so I've said this is my husband. Ye ofcourse his said I never meet much people in the church like this. What ever workers you will meet up just remember God loves all there is just people who will try their best to put you down. My family will always believe in God and people like this won't put me off or open hate in me. I just thought if you ever treated with anger or someone will be conserned about your believes just ignore them you always welcome there, would you be christening or about to do christing for yourself and accept it. I wish to this man more compation and more prayers for appropriate behaviour to strangers and other families. we wanted to come in put a candle in for lowed ones and give donations but when you treated like this in the church u feel discomfort and just want to leave it or questions yorself or there is a right people serving God words.

One of the top tourist sites. Well restored and interesting combination of religion and city defence that I have not seen in an other part of Europe. If you walk on a few blocks you can see interesting street art at Pylimo Galerija.

Gates of Down, are always for me gates to the old part of Vilnius. From one side - street with cars and public transport, from another - calm street with amber, cheese and linen shops, churches and cafés. Just stay here for a moment, and enjoy the beauty of these gates...

Best time to visit, is really early in the morning, before 8.30. At 9 it starts the mass but from 8.30 pilgrims are present and pray. If you arrive at 8 you will have 30 minutes to silently view the place. Photos not allowed.

Its enjoys plenty of good write ups , but I found this literal gate a little underwhelming. By all means enjoy the legends that some over enthusiastic guides will relate but its significance may escape many visitors. The area is packed with religious buildings which hold more interest so don't waste any time by hanging around fearing you have missed something.

This gate is beautiful, and the oldest and only surviving city gate from the medieval wall of the 1500s. It is definitely worth a visit, as well as a quick trip inside to see the church contained there. The offerings on the wall in the shape of hearts are particularly stunning.

Very beautiful place of devotion with a sacred photo of the Holy Mother and Child on the external wall. Didn't get inside as it was closed but all evening it was very moving to see people, going and old, coming to pray to the image in the street, as it is said that She will grant your prayers.

Built in the 16th century (between years 1503 and 1522), as part of defensive city wall, the Gates of Dawn is the only gate of otherwise 10 city gates, which is still remains intact till present time, while others was destroyed somewhere in 18th century. As a part of a habit at that time, every city gates has different, very often religious items, with believe they will offer protection to the defenders and blessing to the travellers - at Gates if Dawn the painting of The Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy, soon becomes very popular, and through years legendary with believe to have a miraculous power. It is said that painting many times offers protection to the citizens and believers, and punish attackers and those who despise her, and because of fear or respect, the Gates of Dawn is the only one of the 10 city Gates still standing. Many believers and pilgrims therefore through centuries and even nowdays time, still come to pray in the front of the painting or the Gate, and many of them are asking her for a miracle ... The Gates of Dawn are otherwise available for visit in all day 24-hour time, while to see the painting, you have to check about operation, opening time - the object is located in old city center area, so if you are there, you can not miss it.

The old town of Vilnius is listed as a world cultural heritage site of the United Nations. There are 9 gates in the old city. Because of the war, the most complete gate of dawn is left. It is the landmark of the city. The "little chapel of the Virgin Mary" above the gate of dawn, where the black and gold Virgin Mary is enshrined, is one of the most sacred images of Polish Catholicism.

(Translated by Google) When the window of the city gate rises above the street during the day, you have a great view of the Madonna from below and you don't have to go up through the chapel. You can also observe how passers-by pause briefly, look up, make the cross and only then go on. (Original) Wenn tagsüber das Fenster des Stadttor über der Straße aufsteht, hat man von unten einen prima Blick auf die Madonna und muss nicht durch die Kapelle aufsteigen.
