The "beach" has a beautiful view of the harbour of Valparaiso. There's a "podium" where the sea lions rest all day long. The waves can be strong sometimes, so it's not allowed to swim.

Amazing place along the coast to enjoy some of the specialties of Valparaiso. Walk along the beach to see massive sea lions circling the port waiting for food from the fishermen who dump out carcasses along the pier. I've included a video of the feeding frenzy that followed if you're curious. The fish market also has a lot of beautiful and fresh seafood although it has the standard fish market smell.

Playa Caleta Portales, located in Valparaíso, Chile, is a picturesque beach known for its scenic beauty and vibrant atmosphere. It's a popular destination for both locals and tourists looking to relax and enjoy the coastal charm. If you go to Valparaiso, if you like you can stop by Caleta Potales to see some sea lions 🦭 . They look pretty big as compared to those that I have seen at other places. This place is close to a fish market but just a note that the fish market closes certain day of the week. I would recommend to go to the fish market and see these awesome creatures.

A nice adventure you could have in this beach is that sometimes you can find a group of seals feeding themselves or resting on the sand. You'll find restaurants and many options on the menus.

If you head to Valparaiso, take your take to go to this place by train. The beach is ok for a walk, but the amazing part are the seagulls, the pelicans and the hughe Sea Lions chillin under the piers. You can observe them from very close, in the water while hunting fish or taking a sunbath in the sand. And believe me, they are veery big!

SEA LIONS!!! Go early afternoon when the fisherman are cleaning their catches and they will go nuts. The $1.50 ceviche by the beach is to die for. Tons of gulls and also a very pretty beach. The piers are nice. Maybe 100 commercial fishing boats used from here, and we found it very interesting to watch the fisherman launch and retrieve them using the crane at the end of the pier. The restaurants are good, parking is easy, and it's like 5 minutes from valparaiiso. We went twice.

Arrived near evening, it was a good sunny day and not on high tide. Saw the sea lions chilling and sunbathing at the beach, enjoyed the sealion watching! I thought i had to pay to enter the port, and only saw the the sealions were further right nearer to the fishing boats. Head there for up close viewing, i didnt hve to pay. The market could have been closed already by then, i dont think the fishy smell will bother you if you enjoyed sealion watching.😅

We went to Coleta Portales in the morning to see the fisherman bring in and clean their catch. The sea lions and seagulls were the lucky recipients of all the scraps. It was a feeding frenzy! A great place to just soak in all the maritime activity and culture.

Nice beach with some restaurants. But the highlight are the sealiones which can be feeded when you pay one of the fisherman. The will throw some fish parts and the sealiones will get active.

Love this place: hasn't changed much in decades and remains colloquial and friendly. Be prepared: it does smell a bit because of the fishy goings-on, but you get used to it.

Una linda playa al costado de la Caleta... pero a la vez es un lugar saturado con el estacionamiento, la estación de ferrocarril, el ajetreo del mundo universitario, los restaurantes y pescadores.

I think, of all the beaches in Valpo, this one is my favorite. You can't swim in it, but it's open all night and the sunset gives you an absolutely stunning view of Valparaiso's lights. There's also a crazy amount of seagulls, and a fish market in the morning. The sand is coarse and warm during the day, and it's a pet friendly beach!
