One of the interesting attractions to visit at the Red Square is the small and quaint Kazan Cathedral, situated in the northeast corner of the square near the Resurrection Gate. Opening Hours are 8am to 8pm daily. This is a reconstruction of an earlier cathedral that was consecrated in 1637 and then demolished in 1936. The cathedral was rebuilt between 1990-1993 based on historical records. The design resembles other historical Russian Orthodox churches in colour and design scheme with a single dome above the main church and a single tower building. Inside, you will find a small but highly decorative interior with iconic images and other items associated with the Russian Orthodox faith. Worth finding is the replica of the Icon of the Kazan Virgin, the original having long been relocated to St. Petersburg. In the end, the Kazan Cathedral is an attractive and interesting cathedral to see during time at the Red Square. You can comfortably visit in 10-15 minutes before making way to other intended sightseeing endeavours.

(Translated by Google) Entering GUM it is difficult not to notice him! In winter, it is beautifully decorated with various garlands, which only emphasizes its already beautiful architecture. Unfortunately, I couldn't get inside. But they say that it is even more beautiful there than outside!

Church of the Icon of Mother of God of Kazan at the Red Square. Church was founded in 1612 by the Commander of Second Militia of Russian Land Duke Dmitry Pozharsky (1577-1642) who defeated Polish-Lithuanian Army near Moscow and liberated Moscow Kremlin from Polish-Lithuanian invaders. Church was accomplished in 1625. Communists destroyed church in 1936 during so-called reconstruction of the Red Square. Church was rebuild according to old photos and documents in 1990-1993. (Translated by Google) The first wooden cathedral was built on the money of Dmitry Pozharsky. The Kazan icon of the Mother of God was placed in the cathedral - the main military shrine of the Second People's Militia. Then the cathedral was rebuilt many times. Was blown up in 1936, so as not to interfere with the passage of equipment on parades. Now restored in the forms of the middle of the XVII century. There are services, everything is quite sincere ...

This small church is tucked away in the corner of Red Square between the State Historical Museum and GUM. It was founded in 1636, but the original was demolished during the Soviet era. Today’s church was built in 1993. The cathedral may be small, but that just lends more to the atmospheric peace and stillness. It’s free to visit.

Every time I visit Moscow I try to visit this place for a bit, if possible. I'm a Baptist, but I do know how to appreciate some good Orthodox culture. The small church, the peaceful atmosphere and the amazing choir stand in defiant contrast with the institutionalized, soviet relics outside combined with the industrialized & commercial GUM.

The cathedral has a very fascinating and unusual facade. Previously known as the "Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan". A Russian Orthodox church. The present building is rebuilt as the original church was destroyed instructed by Joseph Stalin in 1936.

(Translated by Google) Kazan Cathedral on Red Square - this magnificent temple - was built in the 1620s with funds from the Russian army leading the militia against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders, Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky and former militias in memory of the victory over the Poles in the Moscow battle in 1612. The temple was named Kazan in honor of the miraculous Kazan Icon of the Mother of God - the main military shrine of the Second People's Militia, which was personally brought to the cathedral by Prince Pozharsky from the Vvedenskaya Church on Lubyanka. The Time of Troubles of the 20th century did not spare the Kazan Cathedral. In 1929, the new government decided to demolish the temple, as it interfered with the holding of mass events on Red Square. The Kazan Cathedral was closed. At first there was a dining room, then a warehouse, and in the summer of 1936 the cathedral building was demolished. In 1990-1993, at the initiative of the Moscow city branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, the temple was restored to its original forms. The author of the project was the architect Oleg Zhurin, one of the students of Pyotr Baranovsky. The main funds for the construction (in addition to people's donations) were provided by the Moscow government. On November 4, 1990, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II laid the foundation stone of the cathedral, and exactly three years later he consecrated the newly erected temple. The main altar of the cathedral is consecrated in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The service in the cathedral is performed daily in the morning and in the evening. Particularly pleasing is the bell ringing during the service, which announces the entire Red Square.

(Translated by Google) Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God (Kazan Cathedral) is an Orthodox church in front of the mint on the corner of Red Square and Nikolskaya Street in Moscow. It was founded in 1625. Demolished in 1936 during the Stalinist reconstruction of the Manezhnaya Square area. Restored in 1990-1993 according to the project of architects Oleg Zhurin and Gennady Mokeev. The Kazan Cathedral is a typical for the first half of the 17th century, a type of square, pillarless, one-domed temple with a hill of kokoshniks, dating back to the old cathedral of the Donskoy Monastery. Among the buildings of the Moscow settlement, this type included the Church of St. Nicholas the Yavlenniy on the Arbat. The cathedral is surrounded on three sides by open galleries that lead to the hipped bell tower at the north-western corner and to the northeastern side-chapel of Averky of Hierapolis. Rows of vigorously profiled keeled kokoshniks, deep panels on the shoulder blades of a quadrangle, triangular platbands, with all their simplicity, create an exceptional plastic effect. Well-found proportions of the drum of the head, skilful arrangement of kokoshniks "running across" contribute to the composure and integrity of the multi-volume architectural composition [9]. According to Pavel Rappoport, in the arrangement and combination of large kokoshniks with small ones, the desire of Russian architects to enrich the bright, major composition with more fractional details was manifested - a harbinger of the "pattern" era (Original)

(Translated by Google) The Kazan Cathedral (Kazan Cathedral - Kazansky tailor). This church is an exact replica of the original building demolished in 1936. Architect Professor Pyotr Baranovsky preserved the detailed plans and photographs that allowed the cathedral to be rebuilt between 1990 and 1993. The original building was erected in 1637 in honor of the icon of Our Lady of Kazan. The famous icon depicting Mary with her child was kept in this church, an image that has always been highly revered, as 25 years before the consecration of the first church, the Russian Church said Our Lady of Kazan helped Prince Dmitry Pozharsky's army to victory against the Poles. The new church was consecrated in 1993 by II. Patriarch Alexei in the presence of Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The icon of Mary in the church is a copy of the original St. Petersburg from the 19th century. s. at the beginning. (Original) A Kazanyi Székesegyház (Казанский собор - Kazánszkij szabór).
