Piyaa’s
Kitchen-
The
Bengali
Gastronomist’s
Shangri-la
in
Nagpur
For
a
Nagpur
Bengali
‘prabashi’
(away-from-home
dweller)
longing
for
home-delivered
food,
there
couldn’t
be
a
better
door
to
knock
at
than
Piyaa’s
kitchen.
As
one
with
a
strong
penchant
for
a
Bengali
diet
with
a
palate
honed
since
early
childhood,
with
no
pretensions
of
being
a
food
connoisseur,
and
as
one
who
has
tried
the
extensive
medley
of
dishes
Papia
has
been
ladling
out-
from
the
lip-smacking
‘tamasik’
chingdi
in
its
different
avatars,
a
variety
of
veg
and
non-veg
cutlets
and
chops,
chicken,
fish
and
mutton
dishes
that
can
match
the
culinary
finesse
of
any
better
known
Kolkata
restaurant,
to
the
’satwik’
daily
fare
that
graces
the
table
of
any
Bhadralok
family,
like
shukto,
mooger
daal
vegetarian
or
with
fish
head
(muro),
begoon
bhaja,
jhinge-posto
and
the
ubiquitous
chaanar
(paneer)
dalna-
I
can
vouchsafe
that
everything
that
she
conjures
with
the
loving
touch
of
her
hands
with
the
just
right
amount
of
marination,
oil
and
spices,
is
an
epicurean’s
dream.
The
taste,
like
one’s
favourite
tunes,
tends
to
linger
in
the
mind’s
palate,
waiting
to
be
rekindled
with
an
encore.
No
Bengali
meal
is
complete
without
mishti.
Piyaa’s
Kitchen
would
rather
not
leave
anything
to
chances
as
she
conjures
up
a
veritable
smorgasbord
of
Bengali
desserts
like
rossogolla,
chumchum,
kamalabhog,
payesh,
patisapta,
pantua,
and
what
else
have
you!
What
gives
Piyaa’s
a
distinction
among
other
caterers
of
this
genre?
If
you
ask
me,
I’ll
say
with
impunity-
it
is
the
combination
of
impeccable
taste
and
authenticity,
the
standard
of
quick
delivery
she
maintains,
and
very
reasonable
prices,
the
last
factor
is
in
no
small
measure
being
dear
to
the
thrifty
Bengali’s
psyche!
So,
if
you
suffer,
like
me,
from
the
visceral
compulsions
of
a
Bengali
foodie’s
urges,
and
no
matter
whether
your
growling
stomach
epitomises
your
home-sickness,
or
whether
you’re
missing
your
mother’s
cooking,
or
whether
you
simply
wish
to
set
a
gold
standard
for
your
wife’s
culinary
capabilities,
Piyaa’s
kitchen
is
there
to
bail
you
out.
