We visited York for the day and tried to find somewhere for some dinner that didn't seem exotic (I don't wanna eat fancy food) and somewhere that wasn't gonna cost a fortune. We seen this pub and thought this is it.. we spent about £35 on 2 meals, a side and 2 drinks. I had loaded nachos and my fiancee had loaded chips. They were absolutely amazing. Staff were so nice. Little intimate areas you can sit and an amazing sized beer garden which is a sun trap.

What a place. Definitely will be staying here again. The room was very suitable. The food is next level. Had the beef brisket and it’s literally that good I’d travel 50 miles again just for dinner. If you’re in the area this place is definitely worth a visit..

I visited the Red Lion yesterday evening. This pub is by far the worst I’ve ever been in. Im local to York and there are so many better pubs and bars to visit. There was live entertainment on last night and the DJ was absolutely shocking, He was miserable, rude and swearing at customers that dare ask for a request. He was over weight , bald and couldn’t dance with a miserable face. He was swearing at women and doing hand gestures from his forehead behind their backs for asking for a song to be played. I will not ever be returning to this pub after witnessing such vile behaviour

My wife and myself went in for a meal. We had fish, chips & mushy peas and scampy, chips & peas. The food was over cooked The service was slow and nobody asked if every thing was all right. The place looked as though it could do with a good clean up. I would not recommend it for a meal.

Lovely quaint bar, friendly staff and a great outdoor seating area for having a few beers in the sun. Didn't try the food but plenty of people ordering while we were there.

Was really busy so we were forced to stand in the small room which has access to the mens toilet.... this was fine until someone opened the door. The smell of urine was so strong i nearly started to wretch. So we chose to go outside in the cold instead.

A fantastic local pub with friendly regulars who accommodated my wife in crutches and welcomed us right away. Dave was to blame for the kind introductions. Thank You! We will definitely be going back especially to sit near the fire place side.

Generally a lovely place, but they really do need to do something about the smell coming from the gents. In the meantime, as long as you avoid that part of the pub you can enjoy lovely service, drinks and ambience at reasonable prices

Red very old coach house/Pub small well kept architectural rooms surround the bar. The pub contains an old Priest hole in the chimney area. Good food and selection of beers. Large beer garden at the side.

Bit of an expensive meal for a small frozen pie, home made chips were nice though. Not sure if coors larger always tastes watery as I've not had it before.. two blokes were very loud and swearing every second word, staff should be aware that this will end up getting bad reviews.. they should tell then to lower their voices or stop swearing.. very unpleasant for me and my wife

We were attracted to this place because of its age and history. It is lovely and quaint inside with charming old features. We thought we would eat there, it was very busy and the only seat available looked great in front of a real fire, but there was an overwhelming urine smell, presumably coming from the ajoining men's toilets, we had to leave unfortunately.

Good old fashioned pub. Came in after a long trek with my 5 year old to find something that was a) open b) did kids food and c) didn't require a second mortgage. Was greeted by a very welcoming bar server and provided the menu. The food unlike most of York isn't full of gimmicks, it's good solid pub food. I ordered the blue cheese burger and my daughter the kids burger . Service was extremely friendly without being intrusive. Both came very quickly despite it being a lunchtime in the school holidays and the portions were fantastic. The food was well cooked and the chips are proper homemade cut from actual potatoes. Really recommend this place if you are like me and hate the pretentiousness of modern eateries.

Great place, very friendly and popular with locals. Love the open fires. Well worth a visit for the atmosphere 💙

Really impressed. It felt we were outside of the immediate touristy area, in a normal pub. Good beer, great service and excellent food and the two veggies with us liked the food too. Definitely worth a look.

One of yorks historic pubs which must be visited, large portions of food, great selection of ales, is one of yorks haunted pubs, great atmosphere.

Lovely old pub. Friendly, served food and not expensive. If you enjoy looking at history, I would highly recommend this pub. I'll go back.

Good ales but the worst food I have ever had in my life. I can still feel it scraping my gut. mushroom pie As hard as a brick. Mashed potato flat rubber. Veg wet sloppy and tasteless. Salad old and disgusting.

Poor atmosphere, fish was good from fish and chips, however paying 31.95 for a pukka pie a dozen chips and cold peas left a bad taste in my mouth. Much room for improvement

Nice place for a quick drink. Very friendly staff. The pub itself is full of history.

Plenty of seating outside. Inside is like stepping back in time...if the walls could talk I'm sure there would be some interesting tales of old

Lovely pub 👌 both inside and outside. Good beer, lager and wine at decent price. Cheers

Firstly I would like to tell you about the landlord: he's a very cool dude (80s Fila and all dat lol!) and supports the 'right' team from Manchester! Moreover, he is approachable and keen to be of assistance with his knowledge of York and what to give a swerve to. The beer is good and so is his knowledge of the Manchester 70/80/90s music scene; I am referring to the Haccy. And so is the chap's nous on the England football team when they weren't such a bad bunch of mardy-arsed poseurs that wear the shirt today. The few customers who were at the bar were a bit the same, helping and pleasant. As I have said before, people make pubs and this is why it's one of the best in York. 12/10 💪

Me and my wife popped in here on Tuesday morning, the burger and chips was amazing, the drinks thirst quenching and icy cold, the 2 ladies serving were so nice and couldn't do enough to make us welcome, next time we go to York, this will be our first stop for food and drink, thank you so much

Lovely meal and very friendly staff. Best fish and chips I've had in ages and very quick. Great selection of drinks and a roaring fire for those cold nights.

The red lion well that place will and always will remain old inside and outside I do love the Fireplace and any old dark wood on the walls. It is just a shame the same cannot be said with the carpet I could not really say I love the carpet it just a new old inside and outside type of place.

We usually come here to eat every time we visit York as it is a nice little old fashioned bar with an open fire, good beers and some delicious food that isn't massively overpriced and underwhelming. Never disappoints. Good service and friendly atmosphere.

Amazing pub with some lovely old traditional features in the City Centre. Quite surprised it was a 'spoons but personally don't have a problem with them, in fact that's why we went. Not that we're tight Yorkshiremen. We visited during the Rugby League World Cup 21 watching the Women at LNER Stadium and a bonus was that the lovely lass who served us(sorry didn't catch her name) was a Wakefield Trinity supporter!!!

Great pub, very friendly staff who were lovely to my children too, food looks lovely although I haven’t tried it. Gets busy at the weekends obviously but the heated huts are good addition, great pub garden and lovely roaring fire in the bar. Looking forward to going again tonight before we go home tomorrow
