We had a great time looking at the Art in the Galleries upstairs in the National Museum. It was free to enter but donations are welcome! There were many great masters including my favourite artist Monet and each painting was clearly labelled with an explanation of the work. I will return next on a weekend when the Oriel restaurant is open and spend a longer time in this fantastic venue. I will be able to spend time visiting the Museum too. There is a coffee shop serving snacks and beverages in the foyer with a nice gift shop too.

Really nice museum, suitable for visiting with children if they are bored or you are bored of them. .. We enjoyed to see the prehistoric world's exhibition with dinosaurs and other extinct creatures. The entrance is free, and I recommend!

While entry to the museum is free, due to Covid restrictions, tickets for your visit must be booked in advance. This did mean we initially had to come back another day; however, the online booking process was very simple and there was plenty of availability. We enjoyed our visit, particularly the natural history and modern art exhibitions, but we were disappointed by the large number of exhibits that are currently closed. Sections of the natural history exhibit were also closed. For free, it was definitely worth a visit, but we didn't stay longer than an hour.

Great museum!! Many things for you to see and learn. I liked the planet part which I found it very informative. Some parts in the museum are closed due to Covid restrictions. You have to book in advance, and it’s free. I highly recommend the National Museum Cardiff to anyone looking for interesting things!

Check the website before you go for tickets (free) and see what's on. I didn't but as it was midweek it wasn't a problem. I enjoyed the commentary on the Rules of Art after I had seen the exhibition - it added understanding for me! The Natural History Halls are a separate entity packed full of facts and and interesting displays for younger folk. The crystal display is wonderful - nature is amazing. Pictures don't show the beauty of the formations.

A very nice museum. The bottom part is all natural history and exhibitions (you need to pay to enter the exhibitions), the upper part is all art like Botticelli, Monet, Van Gough, etc and some pottery. The museum is very clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. Lovely selection of gifts at the gift shop!

Visited during Easter holidays with my dinosaur mad 9 year old. Free to enter. Excellent museum with lots to see. Particularly enjoyed the natural world and the history of Wales. Two places to eat (one in foyer and one in basement) but places to sit and each a packed lunch. Metered on-street parking easily available behind the museum. We spent 3 happy hours wandering around but there was still lots we didn't see (out of choice). Highly recommend.

A great place for kids, both old and young. Whether you want a quick visit, or spend hours here, there is a lot to see and is well worth a visit.

For me this improptu visit was a wonderful trip down memory lane as part of a great weekend break in Cardiff . As an art student in the early 70s here I was selected to help the curators of a Welsh Summer Exhibition so it was nice to return to those memories. The museum is part of a grand civic complex which offers tranquility in the heart of the busy metropolis that Cardiff still is and a short stroll from the nearby Cardiff Hilton where we were staying. Covid restrictions mean entrance to the museum is currently by booking online beforehand and is free with an invitation to donate (which I would urge you to accept as it is a wonderful experience for anyone with a creative soul or a curious mind). I messed up my booking but the staff who were relaxed and friendly kindly 'sorted me out' at the front entrance. I went to see the paintings (up close to a Rembrandt and a Francis Bacon!) which were fantastic but I was also surprised and astonished by a natural history exhibition of Wales' origins which was wonderful for young families. However, my personal favourite was a wonderful show about the late great Richard Burton containing many items of personal memorabilia which allowed fascinating insights into his life (and the bilingual descriptions offered a chance for me to further my Welsh). Capped by a nice cup of tea and a Welsh cake afterwards - a perfect Sunday morning. We'll worth a visit.

I loved the whole experience although it felt a little rushed, as people were coming in all directions so couldn't stand and look at all the exhibitions for too long. Probably best to avoid on school holidays. Other than that brilliant day out and very educational

The museum itself and its content are great to view but staff, especially front of house need better training. There is now an Eventbrite booking system due to COVID, which is totally fine until you're told they can't find your ticket - because they weren't paying attention. Though tickets were booked in advance, the place was pretty much crowded. The one-way system is neither efficient because it is not signposted to direct you where you are and where next. No adequate signage for toilets nor lifts. Some of the staff were absolutely professional chatting with the younger ones, but others could not event bother giving the direction to the toilet, except by pointing towards it and still looking on whilst a kid was crouching in desperation. I had to ask them to assist. We didn't feel welcomed, as this security agent was literally on the neck of the group when moving through a number of rooms.

In a world of busyness, noise & unceasing activity, ‘National Museum Cardiff’ is a beacon of peace in an increasingly hectic world. The building itself stands juxtaposed to everything modern; with grandiose architecture designed to be enjoyed, not too serve any practical purpose. The content of the museum is similarly curated to impress a sense of awe and thoughtfulness. Whether your a group of tired friends looking to relax and goof around with modern art as a backdrop, a thoughtful individual looking reflect on life and renaissance art, or a young child looking to see some cool dinosaurs, Cardiff museum has it all. There’s a reason this is one of my favourite places in Cardiff, never mind the fact it’s free. In fact, I might head down now…

Cardiff museum is one of the best in the United Kingdom in my opinion. It's a great free, fun and interesting option to have, and good for all weathers. The classical art section here is excellent with many masters on display such as Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Turner and more. The display is well laid out and comes with information about each painting or sculpture. There is a prehistoric section with information about dinosaurs, mammoths, fossils and so on. And the museum has rotating special exhibitions which change every few months The building is also gorgeous, a fine example of Victorian era architecture

I had a phenomenal time here when I went on a trip to Cardiff with my school! The exhibitions were completely outstanding, I've never seen anything like it! The facts on the boards surrounding the artifacts and the dinosaurs were very interesting and I found my trip here very educational! I highly recommend going here and as someone from Pembrokeshire who was visiting this was completely marvellous! It also had a really nice gift shop! Didn't have the time to buy anything though it was severely tempting! If you're looking for an educational visit with little ones or even a fun day out with your family this is definitely the place for you! (The felt animals are extraordinarily detailed too which adds an extra layer of magic to the museum!)

Firstly, the building itself is beautiful inside and out. The museum is well set out, informative, and lots to see. The ground floor focuses on the natural history of Wales, the first floor on the history of art. A casual look would probably take around an hour and a half, but it's easy to spend much longer. There is no charge to visit, but donations are welcome. Recommended.

Wow, what a fabulous museum! Absolutely huge with everything you could think of and it was all for free! Lots to discover about dinosaurs and local fossils found, nature and a journey through time from when the universe began, to the present day. Upstairs was a few rooms of art and statues. It is basically a mini National history museum in London. Highly recommend!

Wonderful museum. Free entrance. Ideal for all ages. Best section is clearly about biology and paleontology where you will find lots of animals including high quality fossils. The building itself is huge and has lots of art. There are other sections on the museum worth to visit. Toilets are downstairs. If you visit Cardiff go there.

Fabulous art collection a lot bequeathed by the Davies sisters. Some great Impressionism works including Monet. Less interested in natural history section. Quite a few galleries closed unfortunately. Why it’s being rehung now when they could have done it months ago when closed is a mystery. Free.

A rich collection of art and artifacts which would thrill the minds of history, politics and pop culture nerds in equal measure. The self guided tours can have you basking in the aura of the heydays for hours at end. Staring into the faces of the timepieces I had only seen illustrated in my History books was a one of a kind experience after all.

Amazing and interesting place. I would advice to book at least two hours of you want to see everything. We only read few plaques and in 1:45 h we couldn't see everything and had to rush to exit while we were upstairs as they were closing museum at 4:45pm.

Very friendly staff, we didn't realise we needed to book a ticket (obviously we should have really but hey 🤦‍♀️). The gentleman on the door booked us in there and then no issues. The lady at the start was very friendly and interacted with my son looking at the stars etc. My son loved the dinosaurs (but what else did we expect). Very clean throughout. A brilliant free day out. Shop is a tad expensive but considering it's free to go to the museum, it's to be expected as that's their income.

Despite Covid restrictions limiting access to many exhibits I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The art gallery deserves special mention for having works by several world class artists (Rodin's 'Kiss', works by Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gough and more). It was nice to see photography included with a great photography exhibition: 'David Hurn: Swaps'.

Enjoyed the French Impressionism paintings in the top floor of the museum; it hit my trip to Cardiff. The admission is free and the staffs are very friendly and helpful. Lots amazing collections in the museum and worth to spend a day reading and appreciating all the artwork and the historical background and creation ideas about them.

Absolutely amazing place and all free. Entry was totally free just had to pay for for parking which was around £3-4 for couple of hours. We went with family and everyone enjoyed the visit. There is plenty to explore in there, even my little one of 3 years enjoyed. You can easily spend 3-4 hours in there. There is cafeteria on the ground floor for tea coffee breakfast and reasonable seating available. Staff was very polite and friendly. Totally worth a visit. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are into art, animal and history.

Fantastic, educational day out in Cardiff. I learnt so much today during my visit, I loved the way the exhibition was curated, it was captivating and engaging. I couldn't take my eyes from the minerals and crystals and enjoyed learning about the history of our Earth, I found the timeline fascinating and really put things into perspective for me. The art gallery holds a great selection of works, covering a vast time period. I really enjoyed the modern art they had there. The perfect place for a rainy day or study trip.

The entry to the museum is free by a grant from the Weish Government. It's built since 1907, about 116 years ago! Such a long history! You can see a lot of paints and arts in the museum.

This is a fantastic museum with a lot of variety. The ground floor includes massive natural history displays that document the geological creation of Wales. They have plenty of areas for all age groups, and the walking path that follows the chronological evolution from protozoa to the dinosaurs to the Wolly Mammoths and the rise of human agriculture is amazingly well done. The first floor has a massive variety of artwork, from classics like Monet and Van Gough to modern day artists. A free museum that offers this much is rare to common across and well worth the visit.

Fantastic exhibits, free fun for the whole family! We were here for hours wandering around the various exhibits. Some exhibits are displayed in cases but many are more interactive so really capture young imaginations and prompt questions and learning. The art gallery has some interesting paintings and sculptures.

Plenty of exhibits in this charming building. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. I have been here many times through the years. Never been disappointed. It's clear that those who arrange the exhibits love their job and take great pleasure in sharing them with the public. If you are going alone, avoid school holidays. Entry is free, but I suggest making a donation as you leave. You could stay here for hours. It's a wonderful place.

Really nice museum. You'll learn a lot about evolution, see replicas of some extinct animals and trees, learn about the changes to planet earth over about 3,000 million years. Also got some really beautiful paintings and sculptures and carvings. Awesome place to take every member of the family to.

Upon entrance, it is easy to assume not much is going on, but like another Cardiff Icon, this is much bigger than it seems. Whilst I popped along to see Dippy on his UK tour, there were other fascinating exhibits from the birth of Wales to modern day to keep entertained for hours. Add to that an art gallery and it is like visiting the Natural History Museum, V&A, science and national art gallery all in one go. And it is free.

I didn't know what to expect when I walked in and nor where to start. That is because it is not well signposted. I could find the cafe but didn't know behind that the stairs take you to the art galleries. With the scaffolding up, I also didn't know it was open. They need to help visitors to come in and to get to the galleries that will interest them.

My children love going here! Dinosaurs, art, sculptures, natural history and performances and workshops if you go on the right day. Free entry, sometimes a specialist exhibition is on site and has a separate entry fee in another part of the museum. Cafe and gift shop in the entry hallway, restaurant downstairs. Museum prices so be wary if you're planning on having a cup of tea or something. Tubs are set around the place to make a donation if you wish. Lockers which need £1 or a trolley coin. Lift, although it's a bit awkward to keep going back a forth when you want to go to a different floor. A great place to go and there is parking all around the grounds.

Even in post virus lockdown there are still amazing exhibits and collections to see.and experience. To keep a one way system going exhibitions are narrowed in scale and some definitely not on show but there are still plenty. A good eclectic collection. Children will live the natural history on the ground floor. The arts and ceramics are on the second floor with major works also included. The parking is easy, but so is access by bus and train. Cafe good, gift shop great quality and unique, toilets readily available. And it's free. What more could you want. Highly recommend visit!!

Really lovely museum with lots of fun information to take in. Particularly loved the whole area on the process of the world beginning and evolution, it was great to be able to walk through and see it all one stage at a time. There was a ‘100 years of the BBC’ exhibit going on during our visit, which was also really great to go and see, and I’d recommend going in to see this if you haven’t!

Good quality Museum and learning experience. Had a good time organised display of the history of the earth and lots of items to look at. Art gallery was decent too. Prices for entry are free :) but the cafe is very expensive, as is the gift shop... But all around the amounts expected for this form of place.

Popped in here for a few others and we enjoyed it. We were a family of four with 2 kids ages 6 and 1, whilst the 1 year old was too young to enjoy it our 6 year really enjoyed it. Unfortunately the top 2 levels weren't open during our visit but we still enjoyed the rest of it.
