Awful gym - here's why- loads of broken machines, missing needles for the weight machines- floor staff laugh when you ask for them saying, 'oh yeah they're always getting robbed'. On my recent visit there was not 1 needle in the upper gym Foaming hydropool which burns your eyes and consistently left me with a rash, cloudy/dirty main pool that has limited access as its used for swimming lessons after 3pm and all weekend....Same situation in the family pool which is taken up by swimming lessons from 3-8 and all weekend the swim lessons for kids are their priority- not their members. They don't care about the paying members! No lane swimming rules- people walk up and down the middle speed lane- chatting when there are clearly 4-5 people in there trying to swim. Slow front crawlers in the fast lane and people walking sideways up and down the slow lane. Water quality is poor and always left me with skin problems...Unlike with my new pool. The upper gym smells like mould. The women's section is massively neglected, the renovation is very cheap- which is why we held onto our memberships for longer- to see if there would be an improvement. There wasn't. You pay for a pool you can hardly access, machines that don't work or have missing parts....What's the point? They charge the highest rates at this gym for the Peninsular outside of Thornton hotel and spa....Not worth it and I massively regret holding onto my membership for so long.

love this gym! The staff are all amazing and the other gym users are all really lovely too. Its got a great mix of young and old all using the facilities which I think is a massive positive as it produces a very welcome and inclusive gym atmosphere Like Answer

We cancelled our membership in July. On joining the gym it was great but after a few months we regretted it. Partner using the women’s area found a couple of men using that area on more than one occasion. Gym equipment was broken and no date of getting fixed. Hydro pool was out of action for a while. Certain reception staff need to learn to smile, they are first point of contract for any business. Instead one regular receptionist is rude, ignores you when you ask for help the list can go on. The equipment was in dire need of updating, but the most annoying this was people not putting the equipment away after using it.

I have a family pass which I believe I was miss sold. We pay £121 per month, what do I get in return? I don't know. When the member of staff sold us this, he told us there are multiple things for my kids to do, various gym classes for my kids, swimming and much more.i was excited to start going there. On my first entry as a member they decided to tell me my kids aren't allowed to use anything upstairs, there's no classes at all since Covid and they have no plans to bring any back, my kids can't use the treadmill or anything. The only thing we're allowed to do is use the swimming pool and have access to a "family area" with all broken equipment and a ping pong table. Absolutely shocking

Cut the class i loved due to covid and now things are getting back to normal they have cut that class in half and its no longer the same. The classes are too crowded i sometimes have to walk out of them. The gym is far too warm to be a gym. Its warm because there is a cafe downstairs but i was told when i joined that it would be cool. Its just not. The air con most of the time is not switched on. The ladies gym is awful for weights. There is a sign to not take weights out of the gym but noone takes notice of that. People use the weights and leave them outside the ladies so theres just no weights left for anyone to use. Theres only space for 2 women to use the weights in ladies gym because of how the mirrors are placed and the shape of the room. They have shut the cold plunge pool since covid and they dont intend to reopen it, so it looks a mess. You can use all total fitness gyms but avoid this gym if you want to go to classes to various total fitness gyms as they have made it so you can only book at one gym on the app. You used to be able to book years ago on the app to go to classes at different gyms but i think they have stopped this now to stop you from using the other gyms as they dont make it easy for you on purpose. . In some ways the council gyms are better and more on the ball.

Great gym, I’m there most days. There is hardly ever a queue for any of the equipment, it’s always a clean environment and the music is good. It’s nice to see recently there has been loads of renovations and new equipment being installed which makes the place look even better however I wish a bit of money would be invested into the air conditioning. Most other gyms on the Wirral are pretty cold and this makes you want to work out more and get a sweat on. You don’t have to even exercise to get a sweat on at Total Fitness and this makes it really uncomfortable to exercise in. The summer months are absolutely hell. Please can this be looked into

If you want to use the actual gym and leave aside things like sauna, hot tube, etc is by far far the worst gyms I have ever visited. - Place is a mess every time. Plates, dumbels, cable machine attachments, benches, etc all over the place. - Many of the machines have been upgraded and are ok (they used to be old and rusty) but dumbells are all teared and never ever ordered. - A stupidly massive amount of 25kg plates everywhere but none of the other ones. -There are no attachments for the machines or important parts of the machines are just missing. Going the whole 2 floor gym many times looking for a rope attachment, pin or carabiners. - 5 benches in the whole gym... But 300 cardio machines. If you just want to work out go to some more cheaper gym.

This chain of hospitality is awful. Our circumstances changed with vet bills each month due to a diabetic dog and someone close passing away, a lot each Month down at the moment, but they would not cancel our membership, we did not have proof of finances as it is on our bank statements and this was not acceptable to them, they refused to take our circumstances into consideration and still take our membership out every month on different days to catch you off guard!. Short of changing banks and we’ve not even used our membership since signing up last December they refuse to do anything. I’ve worked in hospitality at a few different companies and never came across such an awkward uncaring company before, they just want your money and don’t care about anything else I would not recommend them to anyone, save your money and go elsewhere where if your circumstances change it will be easier to cancel your membership. Please no reply about contact the company, I have twice and you’re still taking payments! My rent money this morning. So people need to know what you’re like do thanks for nothing Total fitness, total something alright but it’s not fitness!!

It’s an amazing gym with all the machines, lessons (Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, speed indoors..) and trainers (personal trainers available at an extra cost). Got saunas, steam Room, cool pool, two swimming pools and a massive jacuzzi ! All included in a reasonable membership price! Swimstars do swimming lessons for kids there, no need to be a member to use them.

    1. Prior to covid, the gym used to have various classes in the evening. Now there are none after 18.30. Hard luck if you work late. 2. The gym operates a booking system for classes. Unfortunately, the system is a farce. Many times, classes are shown to be full, but there are often spare places because people cannnot be bothered cancelling their bookings. No action is ever taken against these selfish people. On some other classes, they can have far more people than the booking system allows. No one ever checks the names to find out who hasn’t booked. Management needs to be more proactive in sorting these problems out. 3. Staff in general are sociable and helpful. Just wish they and management would take the time to tell members to replace weights and equipment that have been used.

Showing signs of its age needs a refurb, old machines, damaged equiptment unacceptable for the price they charge. Hope they are using the lockdown to fix and upgrade rather than just bank the money. Update Well just reopened after months of lockdown and not a single tin of paint has been opened. Nothing fixed no new equiptment. Think prison gym but then they have better equiptment. Total RipOff more like it.

The majority of the machine are always broken or getting fixed, the staff are very unprofessional and only want money out of you. The lack of communication is appalling, the staff refuse to speak if you call them out on something and also refuse to let you read the small print when signing up. Would not recommend at all, please go elsewhere.

The clubs saving grace is the space and relative amount of equipment. The biggest disappointment was that over the lock-down, nothing was fixed or restored or even cleaned properly. On return, there where carabiner clips missing from the cable machines, ripped leather on benches etc, dust on the clocks and sills.. Weight plates not organised onto the racks - now I understand this is as much members responsibility as staff but over the lock-down it would have been easy to achieve. The air conditioning keeps breaking and the humidity from the pools on top of more humid days we've had recently have made the gym quite stagnant and hot while training, can be unpleasant. The staff turnover in the past has been a lot, the current staff are a real 50/50 bunch. They could remember that this is a client-facing role and it is not difficult to smile and interact every so often. Even tidying weights away and making sure areas are safe, only seems to be a job responsibility for new staff until they are comfortable enough to sit behind the front desk, restock the fridge or wander. Honestly, it could be a fantastic facility, deep clean - including sills, clocks, roof beams, repair and lubricate the broken equipment and fix the air con. I'd suggest the staff could also do from better management, but without knowing the inner workings this is just an assumption - they fix these the price is justified if not more. Incredible, the inconsistency between Total Fitness' in my experience, Wilmslow is fantastic, Prenton Acceptable, Chester questionable.

Friendly and professional staff. Never have to queue for weights or equipment. Really nice pool and spa set up. Let down big time by the showers which can be like pouring lava down your back depending how many people are using them and they need more regular cleaning. Overall it’s still a top gym.

It's a good well equipped gym, training pool, heated kids pool (which usually is split in half for the private swimming lessons), hydro pool and sauna. Bit more of a posers gym than the usual ones. Very expensive as well but more amenities than usual.

I only use the pool facilities so I can’t comment on the gym itself. The changing rooms are always clean, they’re very spacious and modern and have plenty of lockers. The main swimming pool is a great size and I love that it’s organised by speed so I don’t feel like I’m in anyone’s way when swimming slower

The range of equipment is great and the support from from the fitness manager is amazing. The pool area is well appointed, however the cleanliness can be poor. For example dirty poolside channels and tile areas, obvious plunge pool scum on surface at times and spa windows are dirty. The hydro pool is a good size, however it is often not warm and the features can be unreliable. The facilities are good, however lack of maintenance remains an issue.

Whatever your fitness requirements are this place will cater for them. The well maintained pool is a massive plus and the accompanying hydrotherapy pool, small pool, sauna and steam room complete the aquatic experience.

Me and my friend got a free guest pass on Saturday the 7th of December, we was looking forward to experiencing total fitness gym but to be massively let down. On arrival we was told to sign in which we did and a member of staff was telling us things about the gym how good it was etc etc, and also said it’s the best gym on the Wirral and it’s defiantly not to say the least!!! We used the weights area and cable machines which where absolutely terrible!! The cable machines where all rusty and had seen better days, on one of the cable machines you can’t take the pin in and out without feeling the weights are going to break.. and you have to force it in!! Some of the benches where ripped and falling apart it was really embarrassing to say the least! The machines are scatted all over the show!! The music and atmosphere in there was awful and the showers where non adjustable! I think the treadmills and swimming pool is good but besides that I would be spending my £45 a month somewhere else! Definitely the most over priced gym on the Wirral ??

Go twice a week. Staff are ok, quite surly and non communicative though. Cafe not bad apart from staff who almost always make a flat white so hot it scolds your tongue. Gym and changing area are much improved since the Barclay's take over. Before that they were abysmal.

5 years ago I had to move to Australia(one year for work, I contact the gym to cancel my contract early. Was told that I have to make a payment of 100£ and send them prof of relocation. I did it and 5 years after I am chase by a debt collector threatening me of paying the full balance + their fees just because sending them my visa wasn't enough for them. They send me letters to my previous address but guess what, (I wasn't there) so they sold the debt to an agency now asking for more money!!!

  • 3/5 Ken J. 4 years ago on Google
The facilities are good, never had to queue up for equipment. Changing rooms are good & there are a good variety of classes available however classes are now far too big eg Pilates has gone from 25 to 30 & now 40 which is too many & as a result class members sometimes collide.

Potential to be a really good gym, cv equipment (bikes and cross trainers) really poor quality made by pulse fitness. Rowing machines need changing for new. Staff are quite powerless to get things done as repair work is controlled from head office. Swimming pool loses two lanes for swimming lessons at peak times, bit annoying. Good range of weights machines/frames.

Beautiful place, amazing sized studios, amazing equipment, amazing gym space but unfortunately I can’t say that about the staff. Reception staff mess around in the reception area, A man who works at the Dolce cafe began to shout at an innocent 12 year old boy because he didn’t have enough money and when he was getting a sandwich he was rudely persuading him to heat it up and when the boy refused he was going to do it anyway! Itwas the same in the pool. Very rude lifeguard who obviously can’t stand kids and the boy accidentally threw his ball over the barrier and one of the swimming teachers, an old woman, began to scream at him! I don’t think it’s fair that staff treat children this way. Not all children are rude, they need to understand it

Terrible gym. If you’re bringing your younger ones (13-14) do not. Choose another gym. They don’t tell you what you can’t go use with them until you’re a few sessions in and find yourself being told they can’t use the hydra pool... and then even worse a few days later they can’t use the treadmill. If that would of been said then they wouldn’t of joined in the first place. Staff also don’t reply to emails.

Really enjoyed going to the gym prior to reopening from lockdown 1.0, we didn't find that there were strong measures in place/enough cleaning facilities. I found out I was pregnant during this time and did not feel safe attending the Gym. Our contract was due to end in January however they are now saying we cannot cancel as it is 12 payments not 12 months, even though this is what we signed up to and refused to show us the paper work stating this. It is not our fault that the gym has had to shut and we are now stuck paying for a gym membership that I will not be able to use when lockdown ends due to it not feeling like a safe environment or being early postpartum (which ever comes first). The staff have not been helpful and have been very dismissive, happy to take your money but not help you when you need it which is disgusting considering the price you pay to be a member.

Jacuzzi wasn’t very warm compared to normal, some children were playing on the equipment and were not checked by parents or staff - could be Covid risk! Showers and changing room very cold. Not up to normal standards- hope it was just a hiccup and going to be sorted soon.

As someone who is very experienced in swimming it's nice to finally have a pool that doesnt get to busy and doesnt have time slots on when you can use it. Which is a much improvement over the places that have casual swimmers packed into a 1 hour time slot where you cant get a fast front crawl going due to other swimmers. But in total fitness I've noticed that people are very kind and are willing to let you pass without making a fuss about it. 😁

I dig it, this place has transformed my perception of how a gym should be, and has helped me massively in creating the habit and routine of exercise in my daily life. Been my local gym for about 5 years now great gym, lots of facilities to use. Kept very clean. Only thing is some gym goers have poor gym etiquette i.e not putting free weights away. This is nothing on the gym staff itself who put the weights away when they do their rounds. But why should they when a sign tells you to other that this highly recommend the gym

It’s a fairly decent gym, however not 100% sure it justified the price tag The main thing that attracted me to the gym was the indoor running track. Main issue for me is there is constantly people crossing the track, or doing weight training on there. Pretty dangerous in my mind, as the track is already limited in space due to cross trainers being put onto one of the lanes

It used to be very good. Unfortunately when they become very family friendly the pool became another jacuzzi. Two lanes are occupied by kids, another two by fast swimmers but they often mixed up with someone who came first time or believes he is a fast swimmer. The third part of the pool and the last two lanes are dedicated to middle speed swimmers but it is all mixed up with people who can't swim, have walk difficulties or just walk in water and chat in pairs. Unfortunately, when kids finish (20:00 at Thursday) and release the first two lines dedicated to slow swimmers nobody goes there because the entry ladder is at the end of the pool. So people who cant swim do not bother, people who cant walk will not go that far and people who are not familiar with the pool do not read the signs and have no clue what FAST, MIDDLE and SLOW lane is. I am a bit disappointed looking for a pool where I can actually swim.

My favourite place to train has everything you need in one place. Its massive so even when its peak times you can always find something to use. Nice pool and spa facilities and the staff are nice.

Good gym with swimming pool, sauna, steam room, hydro pool and undergoing some much needed renovations of the gym area. Hopefully they get to the spa area next. Changing areas are of grave concern as there is very limited space for children to change and adults and children are forced to change in the same open areas, this makes me very uncomfortable and I would never have joined had I known this.

Booked swim in small pool with toddler grandbaby. Had to wait as was full. Pool manager really couldnt care less. Had to wait till someone got out. Why hav a booking system when other people just go without booking

I use this gym for the squash courts only. There are two courts but can be busy, so sometimes difficult to book. The courts are rarely cleaned, which is a problem.

A well equipped and presented gym with running track and 2 pools. Lots of different classes mainly during work hours. Nice staff and clients

Was great until they removed the child friendly (younger than 11) space on the ground floor. But the gym is laid back and friendly and is pleasant enough for new or experienced gym users.

#totalfitness maybe work on maintaining the building as well…another morning of no access due to a maintenance issue…if it’s not electrical problems or a leak, or staff not turning up. You don’t open that early in comparison and yet that’s the fifth/sixth time in a matter of months of turning up for the opening and not getting in. 20/30 people turned away this morning and no warning…you have an app/everyone’s details…surely a message could be sent out?! Costs up on a regular basis but service levels down…as previously mentioned in reviews it’s top of the prices around yet open less and falling apart!

The air con is so terrible that it feels like there is none that they even supply. And the cafe is so stupid because they close at 3pm for food but finish everything else at 10 past 3 so if you need food after your class and it ends after 3 pm you cannot get any because off the really stupid times

Great gym for the money when you consider the pool/ sauna/ steam/ hydro included. Just wish the opening hours were longer…
