Stunning beautiful old bar, great to relax and enjoy a pint in. We were in a group of 7 and got a seat in nice area, although the entire place is a nice area! The bar has lots of character and charm, with some little rooms to sit it or stand by the bar. Wide selection of ales and beers on tap too. Good selection of pub style food available and at a reasonable price. There are not many places left like this. A truly unique venue. Make sure to visit!

It was all going so well. My party were enjoying the surrounds and decor and drinks. The staff and customers were all friendly and welcoming. Then we went to view the grade 1 listed men's toilet, but unfortunately, despite staff checking it was empty, there was a man in cubicle, so we all rushed out. I moved across by bar to let rest of ladies out of corridor and a sign that wasn't secured fell on me and causing a head injury. When it moved I tried to stop it falling, but stopped by the middle and the surrounding heavy frame fell on me. Photo of the offending sign is below. I nearly passed out with the shock and it was very painful. In fact it is still painful 4 hours later. The staff rallied round and gave me ice pack and did all the accident reporting procedures. But said there were ties on sign to secure it previously, but they had disappeared. This is an accident that should not have happened in the first place and did spoil my group's afternoon.

Has hardly changed since our student days in the late 70's. A magnificent building which screams history. There are some great beers and the food is very good backed up by super service. Well worth a visit with, of course, the world famous male toilets!!!

Absolutely Classic Pub that is a must place to see for anyone visiting Liverpool. Very grand and beautiful interior with dark woods and high ornate ceilings. Drink selection is exceptional from beers to gins with plenty of choices to choose from. Service was friendly and fast . Great place to find a cozy corner and relax in the ambiance and take it all in . Definitely worth checking out all the rooms before you leave and that includes the men’s restrooms that they are also well known for.

Beautiful looking pub with the dining rooms upstairs. Service was fast and friendly. Food was superb. I started with duck croquettes. Main was a huge beef pie with mash and gravy. Very tasty, very filling. Very handy location for the Phil, just over the road.

Beautiful pub with amazing interior design. Eye candy if you like old and beautiful pubs. Sadly the young staff was very poor and showed zero interest in being service minded.

An amazing experience - we'd been on the tour of the cathedral which was awesome We popped here for a drink as suggested by our tour guide. Wow what a pub...Toilets are actually listed...the internals of the pub are truly breathtaking... An absolute must if your in Liverpool

This place is not only historical, it’s hysterical! Starting with the men’s bathroom. I cannot tell you how many women found their way to the men’s room! Probably beause the men’s room is pretty dang cool. The food was terrific and the lunch crowd on a weekday wasn’t bad at all. Very convenient as several major tourist sites are within blocks of the establishment. Beautiful, elegant but not Posh-ish at all! Affordable too!

Absolutely amazing...I recommend you visit. A gentleman's club of a time gone, but the building remains available for all to enjoy. We certainly did. Went midweek so quieter than it would be at a weekend. Regrettably we did not take our dogs but they are certainly very welcome along with their own bar with water and treats. We ate and the food was very good. Would certainly revisit. 5+ from me.

Amazing place! Best food I got on Liverpool, definitely the best vegan apple pie I had in my life. If I ever pop in Liverpool again I’m totally coming back to check again on their top quality red wine selection and real, tradicional, well served British food. Delicious vegan versions, delighted myself on the most delicious lentil pie with lots of tasty gravy. Salad is a special mention cos I’m not a fan of carrots and yet I loved it with leek. Prices were down to earth and place was beautiful. Fans of The Beatles, Paul McCartney specially will be thrilled. For me, dreamer and architecture student, I got mesmerized by the trip into Victorian times. It’s a big place, with lots of more private area where larger groups can meet and gather together in a different vibe from the rest of the consumers - that’s because their menu has from coffee to drinks. You can order from table with your phone or at the desk. My only complaints are about the dismissing attendants, they were not very welcoming, and the next day leftover champagne they serve as a free treat for the tourists of the sightseeing bus could be a little bit less obvious but it won’t kill you and it’s free.99

Popped in for a quick lunch before the theatre. Quick service and good portion sizes, food was good quality and all of us enjoyed our meals. 2 main meals (both pies), a childrens meal, a pint of beer and 2 soft drinks for £45 Only slight negative was the table and chairs looked a little tired and need a little bit of tlc Stunning building to look at inside

We came here due to the odd recommendation that the Philharmonic Dining Rooms had the coolest toilets ever seen. So it was I bit of a let-down that several of the women’s toilets where clogged both upstairs and downstairs. The gents rooms were better in that regard. The food was good and what you would expect at this type of pub. Nice with multiple vegetarian options. Nice staff as well.

Part of the world famous Pirate Map Pub Crawl! Excellent pint and atmosphere. The victorian toilets are the best in the world and are a MUST to see (believe me) however not the best to smell on a warm day! Good seating outside which gets the sun 🌞 Also ice cold water dispenser and glasses at the bar so you don't get dehydrated. Game changer on the pub crawl!

If you want to have traditional British food in a beauty location, this is the place to go. Wonderful interior and tasty food. We had the steak pie, goat cheese pie and fish and chips and all were very tasty.

We had an excellent server called Sergio who was very attentive and friendly with our two kids. We were in Liverpool on a weekend away and he made us feel very welcome. Our kids loved him! The pub itself is spectacular and somewhere we’ve wanted to visit for a long time. The place had a real buzz.

Historical bar and restaurant with good beer and G&T's. We stopped for drinks and had a nice time. The men's loo is apparently legendary, but also generally smelly...

Grand pub with loads of history, even got to have a look in the famous mens toilets. Food lovely but disappointed they ran out of the pie I had gone for. Had a lovely lad serving us who even tho it was extremely busy made sure we were looked after.

Visited this grand old girl many times. Being grade 1 listed no expense spared originally. Therefore no tasteless renovation allowed. If you enjoy old world grandeur and craftsmanship in a genteel setting, this is the place for you. A slight disappointment with the staff who appeared to be at pains to take an order and preferred to want to discuss upcoming shift patterns rather than answer my question about Paul McCartneys impromptu performance 7 years ago. Lots of tourists bedazzled by this unique jewel in Liverpool which was nice to see.

Such a nice pub. Lots of great beers on offer and the staff are so nice. It's famous for the toilets, but it's such a beautiful building and a great way to spend some time with a good quality beer. We had the large fish and chips, buttered chicken burger with fries, and the fish and scampi. All three meals were great and definitely filled us up.

Fantastic, historical, listed pub - like walking back into 1880 British Empire, full of original fixtures and fittings, not least the mens toilet - pics below - with original tiles and fittings. Pub has a great menu too with range of traditional dishes to choose from, plus very good range of beers.

Very impressive building with some unique heritage if you check out the men's loos. Went for a pint and they had a good selection of draft ales however lacking in variety. Didn't eat but food looked lovely would definitely recommend a visit

A very interesting pub to visit, as very elegant inside and it boasts very posh toilets for the men! It's on the sightseeing bus tour, so a good stop off. We had drinks and a club sandwich which were reasonably priced and tasty.

Just nipped in here to use the loo but what an amazing pub! The architecture in here is amazing. Worth a trip to the loo just to see the architecture of the pub. I know the outside sign says to see the loos but I thought the interior of the pub was amazing! Never seen anything like it.

The place is certainly beautiful, amazing details of a very preserved space. Proper time capsule. Staff is all extremely young, clearly not trained AT ALL to serve (and with no life experience in how to do it), though not rude. The Sunday roast was by far and large the worst of my life: small dry beef (1/3 of which were nerves and fat), overcooked veggies, dry over burnt (?re-heated for the 10th time) Yorkshire pudding, thin tasteless gravy. Sticky toffee pudding custard tasted like corn. Real disappointment in spite of the gorgeous premises. Would never return.

Beautiful building and a stunning interior. Built over 120 years ago opposite the Philarmonic Hall. Every room, including the gents loo is impressive. Good range of cask ales as well. Apparently both Paul McCartney and Buddy Holly performed here.

This place wax steeped in history. I loved that it used to be a gentleman's club back in the day & that it still had many many original features. The mosaic floor & bar were beautiful. Stained glass windows & original woodwork. I really enjoyed my visit. We called in after my sons graduation by chance. Again, what a find. I seem to be very lucky at finding interesting or great places.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, located in Liverpool, is an iconic Victorian pub with a rich history and distinctive architecture. Designed by renowned architect Walter W. Thomas, this Grade II listed building, commonly known as "The Phil," has been a cherished establishment since its opening in 1898. Stepping into The Philharmonic Dining Rooms is like entering a time capsule of opulence and elegance. The ornate interiors boast intricate woodwork, stained glass windows, and mosaic tile floors that transport visitors to a bygone era. The pub's name is derived from its close proximity to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, emphasizing its connection to the city's cultural heritage. Beyond its architectural allure, The Phil is celebrated for its extensive selection of ales, ciders, and spirits, providing patrons with a diverse and refined drinking experience. The pub's commitment to quality extends to its dining offerings, with a menu featuring classic pub fare prepared with a touch of sophistication. Whether it's savoring a pint in the grandeur of the Victorian-era surroundings or relishing a well-prepared meal, The Philharmonic Dining Rooms invites guests to immerse themselves in the unique ambiance of Liverpool's social and architectural history.

Had a fantastic meal here with my husband before heading on to the philharmonic hall. I would definitely recommend the fish cakes they were cooked to perfection. Martha and Ryan’s customer service was second to none! They are a credit to the team! Can’t wait to stop by again for a pint of Timmy Taylor

Incredible decor - like stepping back in time. Everywhere you look there are beautiful carvings, decorative Victorian mirrors and antique tiles… Wonderful staff, nothing was too much trouble and their great service was all done with a lovely friendly sense of humour. Food was fantastic too!

Food was delicious 😋. Surroundings superb. Did want to have a decaf expresso martini but apparently that can't be done, but they do sell decaf coffee 🤔 😕 other than that, nice place to eat if nothing else.

It's the perfect place to visit!! Wonderful atmosphere and interior design! The menu is very comprehensive, it was hard to decide! We had the fish and chips that was excellent! With a pint of ale. For dessert, apple pie and the brownie. Wow. Fantastic! Service is wonderful. A great visit for visiting from the USA.

Nice restaurant and pub. The meat pies are outstanding. The history of the restaurant with ties to John Lennon and Paul McCartney make it a must stop.

A beautiful place steeped in history. Our waitress Laura was very friendly and helpful. The food was just ok. One out and of four toilets upstairs in the restaurant had toilet paper. This place could so easily have earned five stars. Maybe Covid hasn’t helped.

Incredible character pub. Very efficient and friendly meal service in the first-floor restaurant, ideal for pre-show dinners. Fantastic ground floor pub with unique architectural features and cozy sitting rooms. Well worth a visit for the decor alone. A little away from the centre of things but worth the detour.

Natalie is amazing. My husband and I travelled all the way from Texas to eat here and it surpassed expectations. Most of that is down to the amazing Natalie, who helped him choose beers and had the best personality on the planet. Come here! You won’t be disappointed.

I visited with friends Saturday afternoon, what an excellent experience we had in this Victorian grade one building the rooms are amazing with the leather sofas chandeliers stain glass windows and the most famous toilets in town.. The food was great we had a shared platter and served with a smile. Definitely with another visit, can't wait till the cole fires are roaring to add to the atmosphere. Looking forward to returning over Christmas.

Popped in to The Philharmonic Dining Room mainly to see the marble gents toilets that it's renowned for! So much so that the staff made sure it was empty so that women could have a look! The rest of the decor is lovely too - very traditional dark wood. There a few separate areas as well as the main bar. Service was good.

  • 4/5 Philip D. 1 year ago on Google
Okay - it's a pub. Not more and not less. Good food, great service in the Restaurant and nice places to sit downstairs. And yes - the gents toilets are worth seeing. 1 star deducted for the smell in the toilets (sorry to all fainthearted) and for having to explain to the man behind the bar what a cider is.

This is such a beautiful building to dine in. Lots of space, and some small cosy nooks too. There was a great variety of food and drink which was served in a very timely manner. We will definitely be visiting again. We did go in the afternoon so it was fairly quiet. I imagine it is a vibrant place to attend before a show at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

  • 4/5 Steve C. 1 year ago on Google
Large pub with extensive pie menu but sadly the choice was limited on the day we visited. Nonetheless, both the fish pie and the steak and ale pie were decent enough. Ideal place to eat before a visit to the Philharmonic Hall.

Loved it! Well kept beer & hearty sandwiches, an ideal stop for refreshments during the day. Bypassing this pub will be your loss.
