Loved this little priory, very helpful knowledgeable volunteers to tell you all about the history. Steep climb up the tower of st. Mary's but worth the view. Parking on the street, toilets . There is no charge for admission they rely on donations. And not far from there is Port Sunlight so two places of interest to visit in one

A piece of local history the priory is the oldest building in Merseyside. A local gem which is always worth a visit. there are remains of the priory, remains of a church with a tower and a chapter house to see during your visit. Going up the tower you can get some great views of the Liverpool waterfront and surrounding area. There site is dog friendly and there are toilet facilities as well.

Visited almost by accident and as we looked a little bemused the most friendly volunteer (Angela) took us under her wing. She gave us a quick but very thorough history lesson and gave us a tour of the grounds. Arts and crafts activities were available above the museum so great for families as well. The view from St Mary's Tower is stunning! We will definitely be returning the next time we're over this side of the water 😊

I went to Birkenhead Priory for the first time today and I wouldn't have known it was there if it wasn't for "The World Reimagined" globe trail. I was very impressed, it's really peaceful and plenty to see. There are 101 steps up to the tower but if you are able, it's well worth the effort - the views are amazing! There was also a lovely lady in the chapel telling us about it and I got chatting to her afterwards.

Had a wonderful day at Birkenhead Priory. We just went to have a look and were surprised to be met by a personal tour guide! A lovely lady showed us around the whole place and was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Already recommended to lots of people that have lived on the Wirral all their lives and never been. It's certainly one to visit. Very interesting and great views from the top of St Mary's Tower

A must to visit if youre going to Birkenhead or Liverpool. Get off the ferry at Woodside or the bus /train at Hamilton Square - just a fifteen minute stroll. Look at their website for opening times. The oldest building in Birkenheaf

Such an interesting history with all sorts of off shoots. The displays are fascinating and not too detailed. It's worth going just for the view from the top of the tower.

Cant believe we haven't been here before - had no idea it existed until a couple of weeks ago. Touched lucky as we were the only visitors so we got to have the lovely tour guide all to ourselves. Was far too cold to spend as long as we wanted there but will be back for a second look soon. If you are visiting check the times of the tours. Oh and its all free and dog friendly.

Historical site of a Benedictine monastery from the 1150s(!), one of oldest standing buildings in Merseyside. In the 1800s and 1900s it served as St. Mary’s parish church of Birkenhead. Today, only its tower and west wall survive. Explanatory panels in the small museum space. Good views from the top of the tower. Donation box at the entrance.

One of the most historical buildings and locations on the Wirral, tucked away in a run down corner of industrial Birkenhead. Really helpful and friendly staff, and a much improved experience in recent years due to some well spent investment in the site. From the little chapel to the museum all is well presented and informative. Well worth a visit, and an hour or so of wandering around.

Entrancing building, butted tightly against the warships and mechanical giants of Cammell Laird. Colour and structure are tempting enough, visitor centre and deeply uncanny models of people make it a wonderful find. Take a lunch or go check out a sandwich place in town.

What an interesting place to visit. History on our doorstep. Have known about the priory forever but never been to see it. Fascinating tour by Samantha who was really knowledgeable and friendly and happy to share some of the stories relating to this little gem of a place. We were lucky enough to watch a ship being towed into dry dock as we watched from the top of St Mary’s Tower. Highly recommend a visit here.

A Benedictine wonder and the first inhabitants to move here from Chester possibly 1150AD and called "The little headland of the birches - hence it's name Birch head. Which relates: BIRKENHEAD.

Live in Birkenhead but had not been to the Priory for 10 years. Amazing how it has come on with the help of the volunteers. Went on a Wednesday when Tony Hughes was clearing up leaves on the grounds. He asked if we (my son) wanted him to show us around. A lovely man and so much knowledge of the Priory and St Mary's Tower. We were probably with him for about 90 minutes because he was so enjoyable. The chapel was beautiful. Then we went up the Tower.

Almost 900 years old and still working (not the shipyard.!). We have so much history on our doorstep that it's easy to not see some of it. Thank you to Samantha for our detailed tour of the Priory.
