This is a great place to visit. Plenty to see inside the house and really interesting. There is also the fantastic gardens to explore anytime of the year. There is are several suggested walks along the canal and the family church is open some of the time. As you would expect with National Trust, there is a car park, toilets and cafe.

Rufford Old Hall is a beautiful place for all the family to visit. The Hall is full of historic artifacts throughout with guides to give you information about each room and area. There is a tearooms with outdoor seating area and toilets. You also have plenty of seating through out the lovely gardens and grounds. You can take a circular walk along the canal up to Mary's Marina where you can sit and look at the Narrow Boats Moor up. A visit to St Mary's the Virgin Church is well worth a look as it beautiful inside and as lots of old grave, we found one dated 1703. Enjoy if you decide to go 😊😊

Visited 25/10/2022, limited parking spaces, very friendly staff from initial point within coach house to those who guided us around the hall, including a fab lady who entertained with the old world toys on display. The tour of the house at moment due to renovation work a lot of items are either covered up or located elsewhere we were advised to some point next year. Family friendly location and way to move a buggy around if required. Would recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great

Beautiful house. Staff are very pleasant. Easy to find. There are a couple of things which I’d say which prevent me from giving a higher score. Firstly, the cost - £10 for an adult to walk around a house - and realistically the only interesting part is the great hall. The house itself is more interesting from the outside than from the inside. The gardens are nice for a walk but not in the same league as many National Trust properties so it seems excessive to charge a family almost £50 for a couple of hours max. Secondly, the restrictions on dogs. We took our dog because the site said there were plenty of places to walk, but the dog walks are all covered in sharp pebbles. These are unsuitable for smaller dogs. The ‘formal garden’ areas are not as formal as many National Trust properties and there was no reason we couldn’t take our dog in there. He is better behaved than many of the children in the courtyard cafe who insisted on riding their bikes and scooters around the tables. Parking was full - had to go round twice. Other than these two issues, the property was pleasant for a visit and I’m sure others might say that the house and its history makes up for its shortcomings but frankly they don’t. Thank you to the shop staff who were very pleasant and kind and loved our dog.

Nice half-day walk at Rufford Old Hall. Luckily, the house is open during the winter. The staff were very welcoming, especially David, he was professional, and a good storyteller and other staff were very knowledgeable! Quite a lot of parking space and highly recommend the NT member, and you can get free entry!

Historic home of the Hesketh family. Wonderful original old hall and more recent (but still old) additions. Not all of the interior is accessible to the public and photography is limited to the old hall only which is a shame. March too early to see the gardens and walks at their best so will revisit later in the year.

From a foreign perspective, this place is absolutely gorgeous, we visited yesterday and payed 10£ each to visit the house and it was totally worth it, the history behind those walls, the artefacts they have, the antiques, and how people look after it, it's a unique experience. The gardens are beautiful and the atmosphere is friendly, familiar, it's a beautiful place to visit on a sunny day, they have a tea room, cakes, cookies. We be back later in spring so we can enjoy better the nature.

This was quite the site to visit. The best part for me was the carved wooden screen. Speaking to staff there it is their most treasured possession and I can see why. There are many interesting stories surrounding this place and there were ample staff on hand to share some of them. The cafe serves good food and the grounds are lovely. There was a trail for the kids too which they enjoyed. Would definitely visit again.

Great place to visit, one of the smaller National Trust properties but full of fascinating items and history, so I would recommend taking your time and using the copious info in each room and using the knowledgeable guides to talk you through items. Not the best for dogs but there are areas to give them a decent pee stop, but not allowed in house or gardens which when we visited weren't looking as good as previous visits.

One of the smaller NT locations but fascinating history. Staff are friendly and informative. Small car park gets full quickly even when not particularly busy. Small cafe provides just drinks and cakes.

A lovely NT property with stunning tudor features. The volunteers are so informative and ready to help and give fascinating historical insites into the property. The Great Hall is worth going to Rufford just to see as it is breathtaking, the bog wood screen is fabulous. We had a delicious lunch in the atmospheric kitchen cafe. The homemade soup was so good. The staff in the shop were friendly and chatty and helped me collect from my car some second hand books I was donating to the book shop.

First time here. Lovely place. Full of history. Didn't get a chance to walk around the grounds as it was raining heavily. Next time. The cafe was great too. Lovely home cooked food. Staff were really friendly and informative.

Had a wonderful visit to this property. The gardens were lovely and the volunteers answered our questions or sought them out! Nice tea room, too! Fun squirrel hedge, too.

Nice compact trust property. Did a nice tour of the house which was really interesting with staff to talk you through the history in every room. Sadly there was much renovation and building works going on so less to see than usual. This also spoiled the gardens - that said, there isn't that much to see there. Definitely worth a visit but probably more in the high season.

Very interesting and lots to look at. They've got people in each room to tell you all about it and ask questions. Friendly indoors as well as out. We went in last week the gardens are in bloom and so beautiful! Plenty of parking, good toilet facilities and a pleasant cafe.

Pleasant NT place with small gardens and a large collection of arts “ collected” from other places. Good tea room. Worth a half day visit

A lovely place to visit with a beautiful old elizabethan hall and buildings. A nice on-site cafe as well for a break in our journey and the place was not too busy when we were there. We had a leisurely walk around the house looking in the rooms and enjoying the various items on display.

Very friendly staff and volunteers who seemed to really enjoy sharing fun facts and history with us! Historic house, beautiful gardens and a lovely suggested route for a walk along the canal where we got to greet some friendly cows as well (a nice surprise!). There is a courtyard and tea room on site to enjoy beverages, food, ice cream - we had a cream tea outside as it was perfect weather. The secondhand bookshop was also a delight.

Pretty gardens and House is open. There is a small tea room that provides the necessities and a small shop.

  • 5/5 Janet P. 10 months ago on Google
An interesting house from tudor times and more recent additions. The volunteers in each room were happy to answer questions and share information. The great hall is worth the visit alone.

Thoroughly enjoyed visit. Very fortunate to get a parking space quickly. Others arriving had to wait for a while for one. Grounds were excellent with house, hall being well presented by informed staff who held a wealth of expertise. Café is good but had a little wait to get served.

Very pleasant walk. Beautifully preserved house. There is a nice little cafe, lots of seating, restrooms and a cute little shop.

  • 4/5 Robert J. 8 months ago on Google
On arrival parking is laid out well, and a volunteer at the entrance to assist. An interesting property and all the volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. The cafe is good, but can be a bit small for the 'British Summer', there's outside seating for sunny times. Nice walks around the gardens too. You can also get second hand books in the shop.

Beautiful well maintained Tudor/Victoria property, excellent facilities, good grounds, reasonably priced tearooms with both internal and external seating. Very helpful & informative guides/volunteers. Watched & chatted with two lovely volunteers cleaning armour. Very enjoyable visit.

An enjoyable hour in the house and gardens. We walked down to the church and along the towpath. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. £10 seems a reasonable price, but other than the great hall there isn't a great amount to see in the house. The gardens are pleasant, but were not a major attraction. I can understand some of the reasoning, but not being able to take photographs inside the house is a pity.

Great afternoon. Gardens are lovely and peaceful. We had a picnic by the canal which was bliss. The hall was good but not very big in comparison to other places we've visited.

A superb national trust property in the North West of England, near Southport. The property has some amazing volunteers, amongst the Ray, who we spent about 15 minutes talking too and has inspired us to look into volunteering too for NT. the property isn’t just the house but some amazing grounds which take about 30 minutes to walk and entirely flat, but there is around an hours circular walk to the marina too.

Stunning timber frame and stone building, possibly 16th century, quick visit on way to lake District, good stop off point, great volunteer knowledge and descriptions in each room, no photography inside but well worth viewing aspects of furniture, paintings and textiles, photos of hall allowed and external features.

Beautiful. We did a quick house tour, seeing the great hall & the 'squint' hole. A walk around the grounds before running out of time. We'll be going back to see more 😁😁.

Great history and lots to look at with suits of armour and paintings and food served in restaurant, the gardens are lovely, well worth a visit

Lovely place to visit. The house wasn't fully open as the upper floor was closed due to cleaning and restoration. The garden is beautiful, well cared for and is a great place for children.

  • 4/5 Maria W. 2 years ago on Google
I've given it three star's because eventhough it's a nice place to visit, after you've been around the house there's not much more to do. Don't get me wrong the house is great inside, plenty of things to see and the staff are friendly and helpful. But the café and shop let the experience down. We visited today and went to the café thinking we'd have something to eat then go around, what we ended up with was first waiting twenty minutes for our food arrive and the only things we could get were a sausage roll and a pastie. But on the plus side the house is worth a look and they have lovely grounds

Lovely day out. Relatively smaller property but definitely worth a visit. Really friendly and welcoming volunteers/staff who were very knowledgeable about the place. The gardens were beautiful and great for a little walk. Also, great cafe with fresh scones etc.

Had a really nice day out with my friend here today- the grounds were beautiful and autumnal. The grounds are beautifully maintained- had a lovely conversation with the groundsmen of how they upkeep the hall grounds. On this note, all staff were very friendly and informative within the hall- beautifully preserved and interesting to walk around, regardless that there was some work being done currently. There was a donation box for apples grown on the grounds- this was a lovely touch and a nice way to raise funds for the preservation of the building. I also noticed bike hire for children and treasure trail kits that look awesome for the young ones. I'd not brought my dogs today, but I feel though there are nice areas to walk them, alot would be missed on a day out here as alot of places are restricted to dogs. Lovely day

The house is quite good, the shop is not very good not much stock and they can't order anymore the staff said, the cafe vert poor just after 12 noon no sandwich's only sausage rolls and pasties and running out of choice fast, the only thing they had choice of was cake's

A lovely Trust property with informative guides. A visit to the lovely Church through the gardens is worthwhile too.

Good circular walk starting from the Hall. North along the canal tow path to Sollum returning by the River Douglas embankment to Rufford. Then to Mere Sands Wood return by the New Hall, 12 miles. NT tea to finish the day

Brilliant day out. Well kept gardens, lovely church nearby, and lovely circular walk by marina and canal. Well worth a visit.

  • 5/5 Paul A. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyed our visit here today, all the staff were really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The lady at the entrance explained where we should walk towards the marina and back along the canal. Dorothy who took a group on the guided tour was very engaging and knew all about the hall and the family and made it a fun and engaging experience. I would definitely recommend a visit, the cafe looks great but we visited after eating a carvery lunch so was too stuffed to try anything, but definitely would do.

This place is amazing, such history and a wonderful story behind it. Some really informative guides and the time they took to talk passionately about palace they obviously love. Take the walk out into St Mary's church and along the Leeds Liverpool canal. Have a cream tea sit in the courtyard. A must see jewel in the National trust crown
