The gym has recently been fitted out with all new equipment, the pool, spa and sauna facilities are absolutely lovely and the staff are always friendly, so you might wonder why I've only given 3 stars. Cleanliness and hygiene is really important to me and this is where the Club and Spa really falls down. While the Men's changing rooms are decent and usually clean, the Men's toilet on the swimming pool level has seen better days, the toilet doesn't flush properly and the floor is always manky. There is a plunge pool, but it's been closed for over a year. Many of the people using the sauna use the main pool as a plunge pool instead, without bothering to shower first. It's absolutely gross when they just jump straight in, covered in sweat from the sauna. Several other members and I have pointed it out repeatedly to the staff, but nothing is done about it. Really off putting and it's mostly in the evening, the same members all the time. Some clearer signs about having to shower before going in the pool would help. Management could easily sort these issues out and make it a 5 star facility. I hope they do. Update: 1 tiny new sign went up, but 6 months later and zero effort to address this issue by management. Very disappointing. They have found time to increase fees by £5 per month though. Now stands at £63 a month and I'd expect better hygiene for this.

Not been here for a while but liked the nice shower room and fact can go to the bar after for a tea/coffee. However, my experience overall at the gym was very poor despite some staff being friendly. I once had a PT session there and the guy told me, he would decide what I would do as that is how it would work. There are more professional gyms, which is a shame, as associated with the Hilton brand but this place did not inspire or encourage me to be fitter. It put me off. I tried re-joining a few months ago, but nobody went above and beyond. One of the trainers was chatting with his back towards the door - this isn't a place that makes newbies welcomed in my view. It should change if it is to really help people on their fitness journey. Unfortunately, after being made to pay membership when I left and had not been in ages, I would not join again. You try, then you try again, and if you still get that vibe which feels unwelcoming, you don't try a third time.

An excellent pool region with two pools, one leads outside and is warmed and the other one is predominantly for swimming. Close to the pools there are additionally a couple of saunas which are exceptionally unwinding. I would suggest giving it a shot in case you are remaining at the inn.

The classes in the club are exceptional and the PT’s are amazing. I have no complaint or whatsoever of the treatment and kindness of the personal working in the gym or in the spa reception. Is not the same opinion I have from management, I am absolutely disappointed and dissatisfied. I talked with a manager that promise will found out and give me a date as to when the roof top from the hydro pool area was going to be fixed. ITS BEEN MORE THAN A MONTH SINCE THE ROOF TOP FROM THE HYDROPOOL STOP WORKING AND HASNT BEEN FIXED. Is shocking that a hotel this category hasn’t done anything about. A little note: Nobody enjoys having rain in their heads or cold air while trying to relax.

Booked on 31st Dec, emailed a few days ago to say they were closing outdoor pool for 1 week, I explained it’s one of my reasons for booking and it’s a big part of the day, so after lots of complaining and calls they offered a free guest pass to revisit. Showed up and is not just the outdoor pool that was closed but the jacuzzi, bubble pit, pretty much everything bar their tiny swimming pool that was freezing! The saunas are not well mainted, dirty and the aroma one is hideous. Told them I was upset (this was a £300 luxury day) all they said was ‘we’ve said sorry’ to be fair, the treatments were amazing and the hot stone in particular phenomenal, but spa manager, one of the massage girls and quite a few of the bar staff are rude, unhelpful and let the place down. This place was once a 5 star luxury retreat, but it’s crown has not only slipped, it’s smashed to pieces on the floor. Disappointed doesn’t describe it, and a true waste of very hard earned money!

The men's changing rooms were pretty filthy, with slippy pools of water being left for ages on the floor. There were cleaners around but they seemed oblivious. The facilities look nice, but maintenance is obviously poor. The pool was closed the first day we stayed and we were told it had been for over a week. In hindsight this was for the best. When we went in, the swimming pool water had a greasy film floating on it at one end which was absolutely vile. Not surprising, given so many people came straight out of the sauna, dripping in sweat and straight into the pool. Staff and management obviously tolerate this as some of them were locals. Cleaning staff and other gym staff also walked alongside the pool in their dirty footwear, meaning any dirt or dogsh*t on their shoes could easily contaminate the pool water. We got out after 15 minutes, having never seen anything like it. Absolutely disgusting place.

Having not been to a Hilton Spa before I was expecting more. The "before" area was nice although not very accessible. A customer had to ask someone to get them a glass and some water as they couldn't reach. I wasn't keen on sharing a space with two others for my pedicure and felt it was a bit weird that they had sat me inbetween the two? Relaxation/quiet room was lovely. Except for staff walking around outside with heavy feet (and the same two girls nattering and checking their phones)

One of the best and cleanest Gym / Spas in the area. Highly recommend for an overnight stay, only issue I have now to not give it 5stars is that the hotel size has out grown the gym and pool area size. It can now get extremely busy Friday to the point I’ll just turn around and leave as there is no room.... but but the positives out weigh the negatives and the discount in the spa and both restaurants is a great selling point. 20>25% off including alcoholic drinks! One of the best treatments I’ve had worldwide was in this place, just a shame you can’t get a 4hand massage anymore. Nothing better stress release than lazing around or in the extra large outdoor jacuzzi.

Really nice swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms. Also excellent gym classes and friendly staff. Very relaxing atmosphere and hardly ever gets crowded.

A very good pool area with two pools, one leads outside and is heated and the other one is mainly for swimming. Next to the pools there are also a few saunas which are very relaxing. I would definitely recommend trying it out if you are staying at the hotel.

We loved our spa day, it was truly amazing and we'd definitely go back. There were a couple of complaints though: 1) We turned up for the 1 course dinner and nobody was around, so we assumed we just had to take care of ourselves so we grabbed a plate of food and sat down somewhere. Someone came over looking at us confused 10 mins later asking about what we were doing. We explained that we had a 1 course meal and grabbed some food. They told us that we were actually meant to get a completely tailored experience in another part of the food hall. Anyway we were already done with our food so that was a bit of a waste. The staff were kind though. 2) Please... enforce the no photographs rule in the pool. It always felt like we were being recorded or photographed because everyone was taking pictures in and around the pool. We couldn't relax at all. I don't even know why people come here to relax then go on their phone in the pool? Bizarre!

I love the Club and Spa at Chester, I've visited twice recently but a couple of things leave me unable to write a 5* review. The first time was for a "Twilight Retreat" spa package. We got a massage and use of the facilities for the evening at a really reasonable price, the room we went to before the massage had fruit and a selection of drinks to enjoy while we sat on the sofas and relaxed. My friend was taken away for her massage by a female member of staff, and then a male member of staff came for myself. I don't have a preference really whether my masseuse is male or female but i was surprised I wasn't notified first, as I know many other women wouldn't feel particularly comfortable, so I would have preferred to have been aware of this. Massage was wonderful, and the room for afterwards was lovely as well, with water provided. The second issue with this visit was that the outdoor jacuzzi pool was out of use, so we were slightly disappointed. On leaving the spa however we were given vouchers to return and use the facilities for free another time, which hugely made up for the lack of jacuzzi. Which brings me to our return trip. Our second trip we were made to feel quite uncomfortable by some other guests in the spa. They were a group of (about 30 years old?) men who were sat on the loungers on their phones. They came into the outdoor jacuzzi pool after us and were still on their phones, very obviously using the cameras to take selfies and photos, and they weren't being "rowdy" as such but we felt too uncomfortable to stay in there with them swimming about and being loud and especially using cameras!! So we went into a steam room instead, another two men followed us into there, and one of them hacked up a load of phlegm and spat it onto the floor in front of us. Safe to say we weren't impressed and unfortunately this second visit to the spa wasn't as relaxing as the first! I think it would be a different story if they had a member of staff on duty in the spa, as people may be more considerate of what's appropriate spa etiquette. Other than these hiccups, the spa is quite small but hasn't been at all busy on either of our visits, which is wonderful. There's a great selection of steam rooms and saunas, and the outside pool is fab. Will definitely be returning, but hoping for more pleasant fellow spa guests next time!

Cancelled my birthday spa evening with less than 48 hours notice due to 'maintenance issues'. Refund offered but no good will gesture or any proper apology. Won't book again
